schwer / Schwergewicht

The German word das Schwergewicht nowadays means “heavyweight” and is restricted to athletics. But it carries connotations of chief importance or principal emphasis, and I have chosen the word “burden” in order to capture these connotations. Both Nietzsche   and Heidegger appear to hear in the word the related term der Schwerpunkt, “center of gravity,” and both are aware of the ambiguity attached to matters of “great weight,” which may stabilize us or wear us down, but which will most certainly deflect us from our former trajectory.
