1. However strange this situation remains, and however peculiar these people, in this situation too man already has τὸ ἀληθές, the unhidden. Plato does not say an unhidden but the unhidden. This means that man, from childhood on and already in his nature, is set before the unhidden. What this is in each case, what in particular cases presents itself as unhidden, is another question. Even in this strange situation in the cave, the human being is not sealed off from everything else as a simple I, but is πρὸς τὸ πρóσθεν, directed to what is before him: τὸ ἀληθές. It belongs to being human – this is already indicated at the beginning of the allegory – to stand in the unhidden, or as we say, in the true, in the truth. Unverborgenheit (unconcealment, Heidegger’s basic translation of αλήθεια, “truth”) — The move back from the truth of judgment (as conformity) to the truth of simple apprehension (as intelligibility and meaning) is already under way in the habilitation of 1915. The hyphenated Greek term makes a fleeting appearance in KNS 1919 (GA56-57) (Zur Bestimmung der Philosophie 49). The stand-in for “truth” in WS 1921-22 (GA61) is Erhellung (illumination). But truth as “unconcealment” is first thematized only in Oct. 1922 in the translation of the Greek texts of Nicomachean Ethics 6. The translation is contained in the Greek-German dictionaries of the nineteenth century. Assim, seguiu-se o critério de manter o princípio global de verter o núcleo de sentido de bergen — raiz que perdura na nossa língua no verbo “albergar” e nos substantivos “albergue” e “albergaria” — por “pôr a coberto”, que significa “pôr a salvo”, “dar cobertura”, abrigar, e portanto, indirecta e secundariamente, ocultar, esconder. Estas duas últimas acepções vêm, em alemão, a expressar-se na forma verbal derivada verbergen, que traduzimos, por coerência etimológica e precisão conceptual, por “encobrir”, cujas conotações são notáveis, sobretudo no uso, em português, do particípio. “Encoberto”, verborgen, designa o que dissimula a sua presença mediante disfarce, o que, não estando ausente, guarda oculta, enevoada, a verdade do seu ser, salvaguardando a sua identidade. A verdade ontológica enquanto Unverborgenheit — termo com que Heidegger traduz a aletheia grega — designa, pois, o “não-estar-encoberto” do ser, o seu aparecer à luz enquanto “desencobrimento”, Entbergung, do que está-a-coberto no ente: o ser no seu estar-a-ser essenciante. A palavra Unverborgenheit é aquela com que Heidegger traduz ἀλήθεια e Wahrheit (“verdade”). Designa, antes de mais, o próprio facto de os entes, por estarem presentes, não estarem escondidos (mas sim apresentados, mostrados, revelados – pelo menos ao homem, ou melhor, pelo menos nesse domínio a que Heidegger chama das Dasein im Menschen, o ser-o-aí no homem). Por isso, “não-escondimento” seria uma boa tradução de Unverborgenheit. No entanto, a tradução adoptada em todo este volume é “não-estar-encoberto”. (Borges-Duarte GA5)
