The adjective ‘ständig’, which we have usually translated as ‘constant’ in the sense of ‘permanent’ or ‘continuing’, goes back to the root meaning of ‘standing’, as do the adjectives ‘selbständig’ (‘independent’) and ‘unselbständig’ (‘dependent’).
