(...) Considerably influenced by Kant’s first Critique, Heidegger asserts in Being and Time that beings can be revealed only within the horizons of human temporality. An individual can be this temporality authentically or inauthentically. If he chooses inauthenticity, his openness is marred by egoism; hence, beings appear to him merely as objects for domination. Because the egoist conceals his mortality and pursues security, his life becomes fragmented into separate episodes. If he chooses authenticity, however, he resolutely affirms his finitude; hence, he becomes open to his own limited possibilities. His life becomes unified because his temporality circles into itself in an intrinsically satisfying way. His (xxiii) future (freedom) is revealed as the unfolding of his past (necessity, fate). I conclude by treating Heidegger’s ultimately unsatisfying attempt to describe the relation between the authentic temporality of an individual and the authentic “historicality” of a people.
