The inauthentic self is “inconstant” because its experience is a collection of fragmented moments. Because we like to believe that there is something uniting these moments, we often speak of the self as if it were a substance underlying the “predicates” of experience. Heidegger, of course, rejects this substantial view of the self. He explains that we usually experience ourselves in a fragmented way because our temporal openness reveals things primarily as objects. If I understand Being to mean “objectivity,” it is hard for me to avoid thinking of myself as an object, too: an ego. Objects are things to be manipulated for the benefit of the ego. This narrow, selfish way of understanding things results from my everyday experience of time as an endless stream of “now-moments.”
