Heidegger recibió y reconfiguró la idea husserliana de que es necesario apresar el problema situados junto al aparecerse de aquello que aparece y junto a la estructura de aquel ente al que se le muestra el ente que aparece. Sin embargo, entendió este ente al que se le aparecen los fenómenos, el ente humano, como un ente de una contextura completamente peculiar. Este ente se diferencia de todos los demás por el hecho de que comprende el ser; y lo hace relacionándose con el ser, comportándose respecto de él (de tal modo que es esta relación). Sólo de esta manera consigue él estar «abierto» al ente (al que pertenece el ser). Esto no significa que, de algún modo, vaya a reproducir en imagen el ente o que vaya a reflejarlo; antes bien, significa que el «rendimiento» de su comprensión del ser es que el ente se le muestra como lo que es. El hombre en su esencia es esta «apertura» y nada más.

La apertura indica la posibilidad del hombre (posibilidad fundamental) de que el ente se le muestre él mismo desde sí mismo (tanto el tipo de ente que él no es como el que sí, esto es, el ente abierto); es decir: que se le muestre sin la mediación de algo distinto. (Esto no significa que no exista una mostración mediata. Sin embargo, toda mostración [25] remisora de este último tipo presupone una mostración primaria, y es mostración dirigida hacia ella y en ella. Por ejemplo, el habla muestra a otro lo que a nosotros mismos se nos muestra). Es una peculiaridad esencial del hombre que el ente se le pueda mostrar, esto es: que pueda convertirse en fenómeno para él, que el ente se le pueda mostrar en el hecho de que es y en cómo es. El hombre, pues, no es el lugar donde se conforma el ente para que pueda mostrarse en su original ni tampoco el «espíritu» humano es una cosa en la que se reflejen los fenómenos como efectos del «mundo exterior». El hombre le ofrece al ente la ocasión de mostrarse como tal, como algo que es, por cuanto sólo en su «ser ahí» está presente la comprensión de lo que significa ser. Se trata de una posibilidad que las mismas cosas no tienen por sí mismas, y que para ellas no tiene sentido, a saber: llegar a su propio ser, es decir, volverse fenómeno, mostrarse.

Este concepto de fenómeno (fenómeno profundo como comprensión del ser) impide tomar lo que se aparece como cosas subjetivas; con ello queda por principio superada la metafísica de las modernas ciencias naturales (mecanicistas pero no sólo mecanicistas). Pero con ello, al mismo tiempo, se hace imposible todo idealismo en el sentido de una «subjetivación de lo dado». Lo mismo ocurre con los intentos positivistas de un «monismo neutral», que dependen por completo de un concepto falso de fenómeno — como si el mundo fuera un agregado de cosas y relaciones cósicas que están, sin más, aquí; como si la mostración se prestara a ser explicada a partir de las relaciones y proporciones de este ente, y como si el problema de la donación originaria, de la presencia del ente, pudiera resolverse en virtud del hecho de que el ente esté sin más aquí—. No obstante, lo mismo vale para el mundo cualitativo de Bergson: éste ciertamente rechaza quedar disgregado en argumentos de funciones pero no llega a aprehender realmente la mostración. Pero ni siquiera el mismo Husserl —aquel hombre que por primera vez apuntó a que la cosa misma como tal, con su significado y todos sus caracteres de ser y de donación, se despliega en fenómeno— logró hacerle plenamente justicia al fenómeno. Ciertamente, Husserl vio que las cosas se muestran ellas mismas. Igualmente, observó que con esta mostración está también el «modo de donación» y la estructura del ser de las cosas. No obstante, todo esto lo explicó de una manera aún «mentalista»: como «vivificación» de unas «intenciones» dadas de manera ingrediente, a las que da sentido. Ciertamente, esto le permite conservar la posibilidad de emplear para el «análisis noético» los conceptos psicológicos tradicionales de representación, pensamiento, fantasía, etc., junto a los conceptos tomados de la intuición originaria de la apertura del ser ahí en el mundo; sin embargo, también lo deja ciego para la cuestión del ser y su relación con el aparecer.

No podemos ofrecer aquí siquiera unos trazos fundamentales de la «apertura». Refirámonos, cuando menos, al hecho de que a la estructura de la apertura le [26] corresponde un concepto doble de fenómeno, lo cual tiene una significación fundamental. La apertura del ser-en-el-mundo humano (su estar en él) deja, ante todo, que el ente se muestre, que aparezca, que se haga fenómeno. Por otro lado, sin embargo, si el ente en cuanto tal —esto es, en su ser— ha de mostrarse, entonces debe ser posible que este mismo ser se muestre y se haga fenómeno. No obstante, el ser está originariamente, y la mayor parte de las veces, «aquí», de tal manera que, ante el ente cuyo aparecer hizo posible, ha dado un paso atrás y se ha hundido en la oscuridad; de tal manera que, en cierto modo, se ha ocultado en el ente. El ocultamiento, en la variedad de sus formas —como encubrimiento, ausencia, desfiguración o simulación—, pertenece esencialmente al fenómeno. Es necesario comprender todo fenómeno como un destellar , como un salir del ocultamiento, y jamás de otro modo. El ocultamiento penetra el fenómeno; pero hay más: el ocultamiento es el que, desde sí mismo, deja libre el ente que se aparece.

Si privamos a la «esfera noemática» husserliana del significado de trascendencia inmanente (si dejamos a un lado la orientación unilateral hacia el objeto), entonces alcanzamos precisamente aquello que Heidegger llama el ámbito abierto. Esta esfera es la que presenta, en una cierta «época», las posibilidades de fenomenización de aquello que es desocultado. El ámbito abierto no es idéntico al universo de lo que es, sino que se trata de aquello que, en una cierta época, es posible desvelar como siendo. Esto significa que se trata del mundo de un periodo determinado, si se entiende «mundo» como estructura de aquello como lo cual se puede mostrar el ente al hombre en una determinada época.

Como hemos dicho, este «como lo cual» queda primero oculto en el ente que se muestra. Esto que se aparece como tal, el ente en la forma de su contenido de aparición —el color como color, el tono como tono—, es el fenómeno óntico. Nunca se da un fenómeno sin estructura, sin aquello como lo cual se aparece. Con todo, el que algo óntico se muestre significa siempre lo siguiente: el fenómeno que se muestra a sí mismo, que se impone, obtiene su naturaleza de fenómeno de algo oculto, del fenómeno ontológico. El fenómeno ontológico sólo se muestra en determinadas circunstancias especiales (a quienes filosofan), pero entonces se muestra desde sí mismo (y no sólo se oculta en el fenómeno óntico).

El fenómeno, el aparecer y el ocultar están, por tanto, vinculados muy estrechamente. No existe aparecer sin ocultamiento. El ocultarse es primario en el sentido de que todo aparecer sólo admite ser concebido como des-velamiento

El aparecer, en el sentido primario de fenómeno óntico, es siempre un aparecerse del ente. No existe una representación primaria del ente a través de algo «mental». La representación, el recuerdo, la fantasía, el sueño, etc., son etiquetas psicológicas, [27] concebidas desde el punto de vista de una concepción realista de lo psíquico y es necesario repensarlas desde la perspectiva de la apertura. En ella, a cada momento, algo que es ha entrado de una cierta manera en la esfera de lo abierto. Lo ha hecho siempre como fenómeno con su trasfondo de ocultamiento, como «entrada» en un cierto horizonte (del ocultamiento desocultado). Ha entrado como «caída» o como una «fascinación» y un «quedar cautivado» por cierto horizonte, el cual, o bien se oculta por completo o bien es desvelado como tal.

Existe, con todo, también una fenomenicidad derivada. No consiste en que algo se esté dando a sí mismo, sino en apuntar a algo que se muestra a sí mismo. Es la fenomenicidad que muestra el mostrarse y que, en él, muestra de modo secundario aquello que se muestra primariamente. Este tipo de fenomenicidad derivada la tenemos ante nosotros en el habla, en particular en los enunciados. Los enunciados no encierran en sí mismos un sentido ya contenido en ellos, sino que apuntan a algo que se muestra inmediatamente. Sin embargo, en tanto tal fenomenicidad derivada, el habla puede convertirse en una reserva de aquello que se muestra y servir a la transmisión de lo que fue objeto de intuición. Con ello, puede entonces convertirse en fundamento de un comportamiento que significa una ampliación de la apertura y ponerse al servicio de dicha ampliación.

No obstante, el comportamiento del hombre que apunta al desarrollo de la apertura y de su radio de acción —y, llegado el caso, de su transmisión— no está contenido solamente en el habla, en los enunciados y sus configuraciones. Existen tipos de desarrollo y transmisión de la apertura en la religión, el mito, el arte y el sacrificio. No podemos aquí exponerlos en profundidad. Cada una de estas actividades, cada uno de estos comportamientos, contiene un modo particular de desvelamiento del ente y, en su caso, del ser. En el culto y en el mito, las cosas quedan privadas de su significatividad cotidiana —en contextos de servicio a la vida— y toman el carácter de entes libres y originarios. En las artes plásticas, la «materia» como tal únicamente se muestra en aquello que es; queda desgajada del contexto de aquello para lo que ella es adecuada en contextos reales [reálních], y asume el papel de aquello que deja que el mundo destelle como mundo. El abrirse del mundo, en todas sus figuras, es, sin embargo, siempre histórico; queda remitido al mostrarse de los fenómenos y a la actividad de las personas que conservan y transmiten. La apertura se desarrolla como acontecimiento de la vida de los individuos, pero concierne a todos por medio de la tradición.

Heidegger reprend et restructure l’idée husserlienne de la nécessité d’aborder le problème à partir de l’apparition de ce qui apparaît et de la structure de l’étant auquel l’étant apparaissant se manifeste. Il comprend cependant celui à qui les phénomènes se manifestent, l’étant humain, comme ayant une structure tout à fait particulière, comme différent de tout le reste en tant qu’il comprend l’être, qu’il se rapporte à l’être, qu’il se comporte à son égard (qu’il est ce rapport). Ce n’est que de cette manière qu’il peut être « ouvert » à l’étant (auquel l’être appartient). Cela ne signifie ni qu’il reproduise ni qu’il reflète l’étant de quelque façon que ce soit, mais l’« accomplissement » de sa compréhension de l’être est que l’étant se montre à lui, de lui-même, comme étant. L’homme dans son essence est cette « ouverture » et rien au-delà.

L’ouverture désigne la possibilité fondamentale de l’homme : la possibilité que l’étant (l’étant qui est de la même manière que lui - l’étant ouvert —, aussi bien que celui auquel ce trait fait défaut) se montre à lui de lui-même, c’est-à-dire sans la médiation d’un autre étant. (Ce n’est pas dire qu’il n’y ait pas de monstration médiate, mais tout renvoi, toute remonstration présuppose une monstration primaire à laquelle et à l’intérieur de laquelle elle renvoie : le langage, par exemple, montre à l’autre ce qui se montre à nous-mêmes.) Ce fait que l’étant peut se montrer à lui, qu’il peut devenir pour lui phénomène, c’est-à-dire se manifester en ce qu’il est et tel qu’il est, est la spécificité d’essence de l’homme. L’homme n’est pas un lieu où l’étant se constitue afin de pouvoir se manifester en original, pas plus que l’« esprit » humain n’est une chose à l’intérieur de laquelle les phénomènes se reflètent comme autant d’effets du « monde extérieur ». [25] L’homme fournit à l’étant l’occasion de se montrer tel qu’il est, car c’est uniquement dans son être-là qu’est présente la compréhension de ce qu être signifie, une possibilité donc que les choses n’ont pas par elles-mêmes et qui n’a pas de sens pour elles - la possibilité d’accéder à leur être, c’est-à-dire de devenir phénomènes, de se manifester.

En tant que ce concept de phénomène (le phénomène profond comme compréhension de l’être) empêche de prendre ce qui apparaît pour des choses subjectives, il surmonte la métaphysique moderne des sciences (mécaniques, mais non seulement mécaniques) de la nature. Mais il rend également impossible tout idéalisme au sens d’une « subjectivation du donné ». Impossibles tous les essais positivistes en vue d’un « monisme neutre », tributaires d’un faux concept de phénomène d’après lequel le monde serait un assemblage de choses et de relations objectives qui seraient simplement là et dont la manifestation pourrait être expliquée à partir des rapports de cet étant — comme si le problème de la donation originaire, de la présence de l’étant pouvait être résolu par le simple fait que l’étant soit là. Le monde qualitatif de Bergson sera également à rejeter, ce monde qui, s’il se refuse à être morcelé en arguments de fonctions, n’en demeure pas moins impuissant à saisir effectivement l’apparaître. Husserl lui-même, le premier penseur à signaler que la chose comme telle, avec sa signification et tous ses caractères d’essence et de donation, se déploie en phénomène, ne fait pas pleinement droit à l’apparition. Il voit bien que les choses se montrent elles-mêmes, que cette monstration implique un « mode de donation » et une structure d’être de la chose, mais il persiste à tout expliquer de façon « mentaliste » comme la « vivification » du réellement donné par une « intention » donatrice de sens — ce qui lui laisse la possibilité d’employer pour l’« analyse noétique » les concepts psychologiques traditionnels de représentation, pensée, imagination, etc., à côté de concepts puisés dans l’intuition originaire de l’ouverture de l’être-au-monde, mais le rend aveugle à la question de l’être et à sa connexion avec l’apparaître.

[26] Il nous est impossible dans ce cadre de présenter l’« ouverture » ne serait-ce que dans ses grandes lignes. Signalons au moins un aspect d’une importance fondamentale : la structure d’ouverture implique un double concept de phénomène. L’ouverture du Dasein humain, de l’être-au-monde, laisse avant tout l’étant se montrer, apparaître, devenir phénomène. D’autre part cependant, pour que l’étant se montre en tant que tel, c’est-à-dire dans son être, il doit être possible que l’être aussi se montre et devienne phénomène. Or, l’être est à l’origine et le plus souvent « là » de telle manière que, devant l’étant dont il rend possible l’apparition, il se retire dans l’obscurité, il se dissimule pour ainsi dire dans l’étant. Le retrait dans ses différentes guises - le recouvrement, l’absence, la falsification, l’occultation - appartient essentiellement au phénomène. Tout phénomène est à comprendre, toujours, comme une transparence, une sortie hors du retrait. Le retrait pénètre le phénomène, mais, qui plus est : c’est le retrait qui dé-cèle l’étant apparaissant.

En ôtant à ce que Husserl appelle la « sphère noématique » sa signification de transcendance immanente, l’on obtiendra approximativement (laissant de côté l’orientation unilatérale sur les objets) le domaine que Heidegger nomme l’ouvert. C’est cette sphère qui représente, à une « époque » donnée, la possibilité de phénoménalisation de ce qui est mis à découvert. L’ouvert n’est pas identique à l’univers de l’étant; il est ce qui, à telle ou telle époque, peut être mis à découvert en tant qu’étant. C’est dire : il est le monde d’une période déterminée, si l’on conçoit le monde comme la structure de ce en tant que quoi l’étant peut se manifester à l’homme de telle époque.

Nous l’avons déjà dit, l’« en tant que » se dissimule tout d’abord dans l’étant qui se montre. Cet apparaissant comme tel, l’étant sous les espèces de son contenu phénoménal - la couleur en tant que couleur, le son en tant que son -, c’est le phénomène ontique. Le phénomène n’est jamais sans structure, il n’y a pas de manifestation sans cet en tant que. Toutefois, le fait même que quelque chose d’ontique se montre [27] signifie toujours que le phénomène ontique qui s’impose reçoit son caractère de phénomène de quelque chose qui demeure en retrait, du phénomène ontologique qui ne se montre que dans des circonstances particulières, mais qui se montre alors lui aussi de lui-même (et ne se retire pas seulement dans le phénomène ontique).

Le phénomène, l’apparition et le retrait sont ainsi liés entre eux de la manière la plus étroite. Il n’y a pas d’apparaître sans retrait. Le retrait est primaire en ce sens que tout apparaître est à concevoir uniquement en tant que dé-voilement.

L’apparition au sens primaire du phénomène ontique est toujours apparition de l’étant. Il n’y a pas de représentation primaire de l’étant par quelque chose de « mental ». La représentation, le souvenir, l’imagination, le rêve, etc. sont des catégories psychologiques forgées dans l’optique d’une conception réaliste du psychique et qu’il faut repenser du point de vue de l’ouverture. En elles, c’est chaque fois quelque chose d’étant qui entre, d’une manière ou d’une autre, dans la sphère de l’ouvert : en tant que phénomène sur fond de retrait, « entrée » dans un horizon déterminé (de retrait mis à découvert), « chute » dans, « emprise » ou « fascination » par un horizon qui ou bien demeure entièrement dans le retrait ou bien est dévoilé en tant que tel.

Il y a cependant aussi une phénoménalité dérivée. Elle ne consiste pas en ce que quelque chose se donne soi-même, mais en un renvoi vers ce qui se montre soi-même ; une phénoménalité qui montre la monstration et, en elle, secondairement, ce qui se montre de manière primaire. Le langage, notamment les énoncés nous mettent en présence d’une telle phénoménalité dérivée. Les énoncés ne renferment pas en eux-mêmes un sens qui y serait contenu d’avance, mais ils renvoient à quelque chose qui se montre de manière immédiate. Cela dit, ils peuvent, en tant que renvois, devenir un réservoir de ce qui se montre et servir ainsi à la transmission des intuitions passées, devenir le fondement d’un comportement qui signifie un élargissement de l’ouverture et y concourt.

[28] Le comportement humain qui vise le développement de l’ouverture et de son district, éventuellement leur transmission, n’est pas contenu uniquement dans le langage, les énoncés et leurs ensembles. Il y a des modalités de développement et de transmission d’ouverture dans la religion, le mythe, l’art et le sacrifice. C’est un sujet sur lequel nous ne pouvons pas ici nous étendre. Chacune de ces activités, chacun de ces comportements contient un mode particulier de dévoilement de l’étant ou, le cas échéant, de l’être. Dans le culte et le mythe, les choses sont dépouillées de leur signifiance quotidienne au service de la vie, dotées du caractère d’étants libres et autonomes, originaires. Dans les arts plastiques, la « matière » en tant que telle se montre en ce quelle est; arrachée au contexte de sa destination au sein du réel singulier, elle assume le rôle de ce qui peut faire venir au paraître le monde en tant que monde. Or, l’ouverture au monde sous toutes ses figures est toujours historique, renvoyée à la manifestation des phénomènes et à l’activité des hommes qui conservent et transmettent. L’ouverture, qui se déroule comme un événement de la vie des individus, concerne tous par l’intermédiaire de la tradition.

Heidegger took over and recast the Husserlian idea of the need to pose the problem as one of the manifestations of that which manifests itself and of the structure of that being to which it manifests itself. At the same time, he understood the being to whom phenomena manifest themselves, the human being, as a wholly distinctive structure that distinguishes itself from all others in that it understands being, in the sense that it relates to being, comports itself with reference to it (that it is this relation). That way alone can it be “open” to what there is (to which being belongs). That does not mean that it somehow reproduces or reflects what there is, but rather that the “achievement” of this being’s understanding of being is the self-presentation to this being of what there is by itself as it itself is. Humans in their inmost being are nothing other than this “openness.”

[6] Openness designates the possibility (basic possibility) of being human: the possibility that what there is (both of the kind humans are not and of the kind humans are—being in openness) can manifest itself to them of itself, without any mediation by something other. (That does not mean that there can be no mediate presentation; but any such presentation, such indication, presupposes a primary appearance to which and in which it refers: language, for example, makes apparent something that appears to us by itself.) It is an essential trait of being human that what-there-is can appear to humans, become a phenomenon for them—that is, show both that it is and how it is. Thus humans are neither the locus where what there is arises in order to be able to manifest itself (themselves) in the original, nor are human “souls” some entities in which phenomena would be reflected as the effects of an “external world.” Humans offer existents the occasion for manifesting themselves as they are because it is only in their being-here that an understanding of what it means to be is present—: and so a possibility which things of themselves lack and which has no meaning for them—the possibility of coming to their own being, that is, of becoming phenomena, of manifesting themselves.

This concept of the phenomenon (as a deep phenomenon, i.e., understanding Being)((“Deep phenomenon”: What Patocka has in mind is that the relation to being, to the being of beings, is not only something basic, presupposed in every human action, but is also nothing that can be immediately conceptualized, or brought to the surface: it is something hidden. Heidegger makes this point in Being and Time by distinguishing between “phenomenon” as “that which shows itself’ and “appearance” or “semblance” which is a “privative” modification of phenomenon. Thus the meaning of phenomenon is not equivalent to appearance·, “showing itself’ does not mean “being obvious.” Thus: “. . . because the phenomena are proximally and for the most part not given, there is need for phenomenology.” See Being and Time, trans. John Macquarrie and Edward Robinson (New York: Harper and Rowe, 1962), pp. 50 and 60. [Ed.))] prevents us from taking what appears as subjective things, thereby in principle overcoming the metaphysics of modern (mechanistic, though not that only) natural science. At the same time, all idealism in the sense of a “subjectification of the given” becomes impossible. The same holds for positivistic attempts at a “neutral monism” which depend throughout on a false conception of the phenomenon, as if the world were an aggregate of entities and entitative relations which are simply there, and as if their manifestation could be explained by the interrelations of such beings. As if the problem of originary givenness, of the presence of being, could be resolved by what there is simply being there. The same, though, holds for Bergson’s qualitative world which resists fragmentation into functional argumentation but which [7] cannot really comprehend manifestation. Not even Husserl himself, the philosopher who first pointed out that a thing itself as such, together with its meaning and all its contingent and essential characteristics, develops into a phenomenon, could fully do justice to the phenomenon. He did see that things present themselves and he also noted that this implies a “mode of givenness” and a structure of the being of the thing, but he still conceived of it “mentalistically” as the “animation” of the reell-ly given by a meaning-bestowing intention. This, to be sure, allowed him to go on using, for “noetic analysis,” the traditional psychological terminology of presentification, thought, imagination, etc. alongside concepts derived from the originary perception of the openness of being-human (Dasein) in the world [v. noesis] but it blinded him to the question of Being and of its continuity with manifestation.

Here we cannot offer even a basic sketch of “openness.” Let us, though, at least note an aspect of fundamental importance: the structure of openness entails a double conception of the phenomenon. The openness of human being-in-the-world, first of all, lets what-is appear, manifest itself, become a phenomenon.

Secondly, though, if what-is is to show itself forth as such, that is, in its being, it must be possible for being, too, to present itself and become a phenomenon. Being, however, is originally and for the most part “there” in such a way that it retreats into obscurity before the existent whose manifestation it made possible, that is, so to speak, Being conceals itself in what there is. Concealment in its various forms—hiddenness, absence, distortion, dissimulation—is an essential aspect of a phenomenon. Every phenomenon must be understood as a lighting, a coming forth from concealment, and never otherwise. Concealment penetrates the phenomenon and more: it is what first releases from itself the being which manifests itself.

If we strip Husserl’s “noematic sphere”((“Noematic sphere” refers to the totality of content, which in turn is in strict correlation to the totality of experience as experience, or the “noetic sphere.” The noematic sphere can be described as “immanently transcendent” insofar as we can both claim that the content of experience is both present “in” experience, thus is “in a sense” reell, yet is not a genuine (reell) component “of” that experience. It is thus “reell-ly transcendent,” not “reell-ly immanent.” For a helpful discussion of the debate that Husserl’s concept of noema has inspired in the Anglo-American literature, see Robert Solomon, “Husserl’s Concept of the Noema,” in Husserl: Expositions and Appraisals, ed. Frederick Elliston and Peter McCormick (Notre Dame: University of Notre Dame Press, 1977), pp. 168-81. [Ed.))] of the sense of the immanent transcendence we come close to what Heidegger calls the open region (overlooking Husserl’s one-sided preoccupation with objects). It is this sphere which represents, in a [8] particular “epoch,” the possibilities of the phenomenalization of what is uncovered. The region of openness is not identical with the universe of what-is, but is, rather, that which can be uncovered as existent in a particular epoch. This “as what” the existent can appear is at first concealed, as we said, in the existents that manifest themselves. The manifestation as such, the what-is in its phenomenal content—color as color, tone as tone—is an ontic phenomenon. The phenomenon is never without a structure, without the as what it appears. However, that something ontic manifests itself always means that the ontic phenomenon which imposes itself receives its phenomenal character from something concealed, from the ontological phenomenon which manifests itself only under certain special circumstances, and then, to be sure, it also manifests itself of itself (and does not only conceal itself in the ontic phenomenon).

The phenomenon, manifestation, and concealment are thus very tightly linked. There is no manifestation without concealment. Concealment is primary in the sense that every manifestation can be understood only as an un-concealment.

Appearance in the primary sense of the ontic phenomenon is always an appearance of what there is. There is no primary representation of existents by something “mental.” Presentification, remembering, fantasy, dreaming, etc. are psychological labels formulated from the viewpoint of a realistic conception of the psychic and need to be rethought from the viewpoint of openness. In them, something that is always enters the sphere of openness in a particular way; always as a phenomenon against the background of its concealment, as an “entering into” a particular horizon (unconcealed concealment), as a “fall” or a “fascination” and “captivation” by a certain horizon which either wholly conceals itself or is uncovered as such.

However, there is also a derivative phenomenality. It does not consist in the self-givenness of something that is, but rather [9] in a showing forth of something that manifests itself of itself; a phenomenality which manifests manifestation and therein secondarily something that manifests itself primarily. We have such a derivative phenomenality in language, especially in statements or propositions. Propositions do not bear within themselves a meaning which could be said to be contained in them but, rather, point to something that manifests itself directly. As such, they can become a reservoir of what manifests itself and so can serve to pass on what has been seen, becoming the foundation of a comportment which represents a widening of openness and which serves it.

Human comportment aimed at the development of openness and its realm, perhaps its tradition, is not, however, contained solely in language, in propositions and their formations. There are modes of development and transmission of openness in religion, myth, art, and sacrifice. We cannot elaborate upon that here. Each of these activities, each such comportment, contains a special mode of unconcealment of what there is or perhaps of being. In cult and myth things are stripped of their everyday significance as tools of living and take on the role of free, originary existents. In the creative arts, the “material” as such stands forth as what it is only once it has broken out of the context of its daily roles and takes on the role of what lets the world stand out as world. The opening of the world, however, is ever historical in all its forms, contingent on the self-manifestations of phenomena and on the doings of humans who preserve and transmit. Openness is ever an event in the life of individuals, yet through tradition it concerns and relates to all.
