Como mencionado anteriormente, OOO começou a partir de uma interpretação de Heidegger, a quem ainda considero o principal filósofo do século XX: “ocorreu-me em um certo ponto, bastante cedo [em 1991 ou 1992], que Heidegger se resume a… apenas uma oposição fundamental que se mantém recorrente, se ele está falando sobre ser ou ferramentas ou Dasein [humano] ou qualquer outra coisa: uma inversão constante e monótona entre a ocultação das coisas e sua visível subsistência ”(369). A análise da ferramenta ocupa um lugar inegavelmente importante na filosofia de Heidegger, compreendendo a primeira discussão concreta em seu grande livro Being and Time, e também constituindo a peça central de seu primeiro curso de palestras na universidade, oito anos antes: Towards the Definition of Philosophy. Enquanto a fenomenologia de Edmund Husserl pede que nos concentremos apenas em como tudo nos aparece, o jovem rebelde Heidegger ressalta que a aparição é um caso bastante raro na experiência humana. Na maioria das vezes, simplesmente confiamos em entidades ou as tomamos como garantidas, geralmente percebendo-as apenas quando elas quebram ou dão errado. É por isso que Heidegger nos apresenta sua diferença básica entre equipamentos utilizáveis (Zuhandenheit) e subsistentes (Vorhandeheit). A distinção é bem conhecida até mesmo para iniciantes nos estudos de Heidegger, e estudiosos especializados da área sempre se sentem confiantes de que compreendem completamente essa oposição. No entanto, OOO sustenta que a análise de ferramentas de Heidegger quase sempre foi mal interpretada, talvez até pelo próprio Heidegger. Acima de tudo, a análise de ferramentas geralmente é usada para significar que toda teoria e percepção são fundamentadas em um fundo de comportamento prático anteriormente despercebido: antes de percebermos qualquer coisa individual, já estamos envolvidos em um sistema total de propósitos práticos de maneira amplamente inconsciente. OOO considera tudo isso como uma série de lemas pragmatistas banais que não conseguem compreender a profundidade real do que Heidegger mostrou. Como disse na palestra de 27 de abril: “também me ocorreu que a práxis não atinge a realidade do objeto mais do que a teoria - esse foi o próximo passo. Sim, olhando para esta cadeira, não esgoto seu ser, mas, sentado nela, também não o esgoto. Há tantas camadas profundas na realidade dessa cadeira que o ato humano de sentar nunca se esgotará ”(371). Em outras palavras, teoria e práxis vivem do mesmo lado da cerca: o lado da superfície das coisas, que não faz justiça à profundidade de sua realidade. Contra a teoria e a prática, estão os próprios objetos.

Isso nos leva a uma segunda leitura generalizada que o OOO deseja corrigir, uma que infelizmente é produzida pela leitura incorreta de Heidegger de seu grande experimento mental. Mencionamos a diferença entre entes-utilizáveis e entes-subsistentes, e mesmo para a Heidegger, uma entidade pode mudar seu status de um para o outro. Em um momento, inconscientemente, usamos o martelo enquanto absorvidos com a finalidade de construir um novo café; no momento seguinte, o martelo quebrou em nossas mãos, tornando-se o objeto explícito de nossa atenção e aborrecimento. Por enquanto, tudo bem. Mas Heidegger também afirma que equipamentos utilizáveis, como o martelo funcional, pertencem a um sistema total de relações, enquanto subsistentes, como um martelo quebrado, se isolaram e se separaram de seu ser relacional anterior. Além disso, Heidegger agrega uma ordem de classificação em sua distinção, na qual a realidade relacional é primária, enquanto a realidade não relacional é derivada ou secundária. Existem dois problemas sérios nessa maneira de encarar. Primeiro, não há nada menos relacional nos entes subsistentes, uma vez que eles existem apenas em relação ao Dasein (ser humano) para quem são visíveis. Não existe um martelo quebrado surpreendente isolado, porque é sempre surpreendente para mim ou para outra pessoa. Por esse motivo, a suposta brecha entre utilizável e subsistente não é muito ampla: ambas existem apenas em relação aos seres humanos. E já vimos que a verdadeira lição da análise de ferramentas é a existência de objetos mais profundos que a teoria ou a práxis, mais profundos do que o entendimento usual de Zuhandenheit e Vorhandenheit. Mas isso significa que os objetos são mais profundos do que qualquer das relações que eles têm com os seres humanos. Heidegger deveria saber disso, pois, apesar de afirmar que as ferramentas sempre existem apenas em relação a um sistema total de outras ferramentas, ele também chama nossa atenção para o fato de que as ferramentas podem quebrar. E uma ferramenta não poderia quebrar se não passasse de suas relações funcionais com todos os outros seres. Para que algo se quebre, ele deve conter um excedente teimoso sob seus efeitos e impactos atuais, um excedente que um dia irrompe como um sintoma e exige que o levemos a sério.

Até esse momento, a leitura OOO de Heidegger já estabeleceu dois pontos contra-intuitivos. Primeiro, teoria e prática não são dois termos de uma grande oposição filosófica, mas são dois modos de lidar com coisas que ficam aquém revelá-las; olhar para uma árvore, desenvolver teorias sobre ela e usá-la como sombra ou madeira são todas traduções da árvore que nunca implantam toda a sua realidade. Segundo, o par “utilizável” e “subsistente” não é equivalente ao par “realidade relacional” e “realidade não relacional”. Ambos os famosos modos de ser intra-mundano de Heidegger (Zuhandeheit, Vorhandenheit) existem puramente em relação aos seres humanos e, apesar da celebração de Heidegger do ser relacional ser mais primária do que o tipo não relacional, as ferramentas podem se relacionar apenas porque anteriormente tinham um ser não relacional. O martelo não quebra porque é em relação a todo o canteiro de obras, mas porque possui uma fraqueza ou fratura interna que o canteiro nunca levou em consideração. Mas OOO acrescenta mais uma reviravolta na imagem, uma que nos leva inteiramente fora da estrutura da filosofia pós-kantiana. Para Kant, a cognição humana é assombrada pela coisa em si mesma que está além de todo acesso humano possível. No entanto, para a versão OOO de Heidegger, tanto a teoria quanto a práxis apenas traduzem um ser mais profundo de coisas que nunca podem ser totalmente implantadas em suas relações conosco. Em outras palavras, a coisa em si mesma nos escapa não porque somos humanos que pensam, mas porque somos entidades que se relacionam, assim como o fogo relacionado ao algodão ou às gotas de chuva no telhado de zinco. Por essa mesma razão, o argumento de Kant sobre a finitude da percepção e cognição humanas deveria ter sido ampliado para um ponto sobre a finitude do fogo quando queima uma bola de algodão sem interagir com todas as propriedades do algodão ou a finitude da chuva quando bate na lata sem se relacionar com as características reais da lata que são irrelevantes para a chuva. Em resumo, a distinção principal na filosofia moderna entre pensamento e mundo deve ser substituída por uma entre objetos e relações. É esse toque distintamente não moderno no OOO que leva muitos observadores modernistas (e pós-modernistas) a ter uma aversão visceral pelo que eles consideram erroneamente como sua personificação bizarra de matéria inanimada.

Agora temos o modelo OOO básico do cosmos: ele está cheio de objetos que se afastam, incapazes de contato direto. Aqui encontramos outro aspecto dessa filosofia que muitos críticos acham difícil de engolir. Pois não é óbvio que os objetos se influenciam o tempo todo? A ciência não calcula essas interações com uma precisão extraordinária, usando os resultados para criar dispositivos médicos extremamente necessários e lançar sondas profundamente no sistema solar? OOO está ciente disso, é claro. Seu argumento não é que os objetos não façam contato, mas que não podem fazê-lo diretamente. Em um caso de aparência óbvia, como duas bolas de bilhar colidindo sobre uma mesa, a colisão obviamente ocorre; nós não contestamos esse ponto. Mas, como visto na leitura de OOO da análise de ferramentas de Heidegger, a colisão dessas bolas é realmente uma questão de as duas interagirem apenas com as características mais superficiais uma da outra. Quando a bola vermelha bate na bola azul, ela não está atingindo a bola azul em si, mas apenas uma bola azul traduzida acessível ao mundo bastante empobrecido da bola vermelha. Por meio desses empobrecidos recursos de bola azul, a bola vermelha faz contato indireto com a própria bola azul, que também faz contato com seus próprios recursos de bola azul, embora de maneira diferente. É uma questão de causalidade indireta ou, como OOO chama, causação vicária. Já na especulação islâmica inicial, a escola asarita de Basra sustentava que Deus não era apenas o único Criador no universo, mas também o único agente causal. Como eu disse na Goldsmiths: “[para tais pensadores], Deus está lá para explicar todas as ações, recriando tudo constantemente. E embora a teologia nos pareça um pouco ultrajante agora, é uma ideia metafísica muito profunda, a ideia de que as coisas não podem se relacionar, inerentemente, de que as coisas em si mesmas são totalmente isoladas umas das outras ”(374). Após séculos de atraso, essa ideia finalmente entrou na filosofia europeia como o que chamamos de ocasionalismo. Para Descartes, Deus deve ser invocado para explicar as interações desconcertantes da mente e da matéria. Nas obras de seu admirador e sucessor Nicolas Malebranche (1638-1715), não são apenas as interações mente-corpo, mas também interações corpo-corpo (como nos primeiros ocasionalistas do Iraque) que precisam da intervenção de Deus para ocorrer. Deus também desempenha um papel causal exclusivo em filósofos modernos cruciais como Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677), para quem toda a natureza é uma única substância divina; G. W. von Leibniz (1646-1716), que sustentou que as substâncias ou mônadas finais "não têm janelas", mas são pré-coordenadas por Deus para parecer que interagem; e Berkeley, para quem existem apenas imagens e não coisas independentes, com as imagens sendo coordenadas por Deus para nos dar a impressão de leis naturais confiáveis, temperadas de tempos em tempos por milagres incríveis para deslumbrar os fiéis e converter o cético.

Embora isso possa parecer nada mais do que um capítulo pitoresco da história dos primórdios da filosofia, uma variante desse ocasionalismo é encontrada em filosofias modernas de aparência mais contemporânea, como as de Hume e Kant. Embora nenhum desses pensadores afirme que a causa é uma questão de intervenção divina, ambos enraízam toda a causa em uma entidade privilegiada diferente: a experiência humana. No caso de Hume, o que chamamos de causa e efeito é meramente nossa experiência de uma "conjunção habitual" de comida que entra em nossa boca e diminui nossa fome ou de colocar nossas mãos perto de uma chama e sentir calor extremo. No caso de Kant, a causa é transformada ainda mais explicitamente em uma categoria da compreensão humana, em vez de uma característica do mundo fora da mente. Como eu disse na Goldsmiths: “para os ocasionalistas:‘ Ninguém mais pode [criar relações entre as coisas]? Ó, Deus pode fazer isso. 'Para Hume [e Kant], minha mente faz isso, minha mente cria objetos (' feixes ') através de conjunções habituais, cria vínculos ”(375). No entanto, parece totalmente arbitrário escolher uma superentidade mágica - seja Deus ou a mente humana - capaz de criar elos causais quando nenhum outro objeto é capaz de fazê-lo. Isso leva o OOO a procurar um tipo diferente de solução.

Essa solução, curiosamente, vem da fenomenologia do professor de Heidegger, Husserl. Embora Husserl ainda tenha numerosos aliados que afirmam que ele já sabia o que Heidegger nos ensina sobre a retirada de coisas da presença imediata, essa afirmação é insustentável. Para Husserl, seria absurdo considerar que poderia existir algo que não é, em princípio, o objeto de alguma mente consciente; em outras palavras, a coisa em si de Kant é uma noção contraditória. Isso o coloca do mesmo lado que os idealistas alemães na disputa com Kant. Quanto a Heidegger, embora ele certamente não seja um realista consistente, e enquanto perpetuamente exagera o papel do Dasein humano em sua filosofia, ele também é quem escreveu como segue em seu famoso livro sobre Kant: “Qual é o significado da luta iniciada no idealismo alemão contra a "coisa em si mesma", exceto um esquecimento crescente do que Kant ganhou, a saber, o conhecimento de que a possibilidade intrínseca e a necessidade da metafísica ... são, no fundo, sustentadas e mantidas pelo estudo original de desenvolvimento e pesquisa do problema da finitude? ” Nesse aspecto, Heidegger permanece muito mais próximo do realismo de OOO em relação às coisas em si do que Husserl. No entanto, Husserl também adiciona algumas peças ao quebra-cabeça que são simplesmente invisíveis para Heidegger, e essas peças não devem ser perdidas em meio ao triunfalismo geral sobre o avanço de Heidegger além de seu professor.

As mentioned earlier, OOO began from an interpretation of Heidegger, whom I still regard as the leading philosopher of the twentieth century: “it occurred to me at a certain point fairly early [in 1991 or 1992] that all of Heidegger boils down to … just one fundamental opposition that keeps recurring, whether he’s talking about being or tools or [human] Dasein or anything else: a constant, monotonous reversal between the hiddenness of things and their visible presence-at-hand” (369). The tool-analysis occupies an undeniably important place in Heidegger’s philosophy, comprising the first concrete discussion in his major book Being and Time, and also making up the centerpiece of his first university lecture course eight years earlier: Towards the Definition of Philosophy. Whereas Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology asks us to focus solely on how everything appears to us, the rebellious young Heidegger points out that appearance is a fairly rare case in human experience. For the most part, we simply rely on entities or take them for granted, usually noticing them only when they break or otherwise go wrong. This is why Heidegger presents us with his basic difference between ready-to-hand equipment (Zuhandenheit) and present-at-hand entities (Vorhandeheit). The distinction is well known even to beginners in Heidegger studies, and specialist scholars in the field always feel confident that they understand this opposition fully. Nonetheless, OOO holds that Heidegger’s tool-analysis has almost always been badly misread, perhaps even by Heidegger himself.7 Above all, the tool-analysis is usually taken to mean that all theory and perception are grounded in a previously unnoticed background of practical behavior: before we notice any individual things, we are already enmeshed in a total system of practical purposes in largely unconscious fashion. OOO regards all of this as a series of trite pragmatist mottoes that fail to grasp the real depth of what Heidegger has shown. As I put it in the April 27 talk: “it also occurred to me that praxis does not get at the reality of the object any more than theory does – that was the next step. Yes, by staring at this chair I don’t exhaust its being, but by sitting in it I also don’t exhaust it. There are so many deep layers to the reality of that chair that the human act of sitting is never going to exhaust” (371). In other words, theory and praxis both live on the same side of the fence: the side of the surface of things, which doesn’t do justice to the depth of their reality. Over against theory and practice stand the objects themselves.

This brings us to a second widespread misreading that OOO wishes to correct, one that is unfortunately produced by Heidegger’s misreading of his own great thought experiment. We mentioned the difference between ready-to-hand equipment and present-at-hand entities, and even for Heidegger an entity can shift its status from one to the other. At one moment we unconsciously use the hammer while absorbed in the purpose of building a new café; in the next moment the hammer has shattered in our hands, becoming the explicit object of our attention and annoyance. So far, so good. But Heidegger also claims that ready-to-hand equipment such as the functional hammer belongs to a total system of relations, while present-at-hand entities such as a broken hammer have become isolated and broken off from their previous relational being. On top of this, Heidegger pastes a rank-order onto his distinction, one in which relational reality is primary while non-relational reality is derivative or secondary. There are two serious problems with this way of looking at it. First, there is nothing the least bit non-relational about present-at-hand entities, since they exist only in relation to the Dasein (human being) for whom they are visible. There is no such thing as a surprising broken hammer in isolation, because it is always surprising for me or for someone else. For this reason, the supposed rift between ready-to-hand and present-at-hand is not very wide at all: both exist only in relation to human beings. And we have already seen that the real lesson of the tool-analysis is the existence of objects deeper than theory or praxis, deeper than the usual understanding of both Zuhandenheit and Vorhandenheit. But this means that objects are deeper than any of the relations they have to human beings. Heidegger should have known this, since, despite his claim that tools always exist only in relation to a total system of other tools, he also calls our attention to the fact that tools can break. And a tool could not break if it were nothing more than its functional relations to all other beings. In order for something to break, it must contain a stubborn surplus beneath its current effects and impacts, a surplus that one day erupts like a symptom and demands that we take it seriously.

Up to this point, the OOO reading of Heidegger has already established two counterintuitive points. First, theory and practice are not two terms of a grand philosophical opposition but are both ways of dealing with things that come up short of exhausting them; looking at a tree, developing theories about it, and using it for shade or lumber are all translations of the tree that never deploy its full reality. Second, the pair “ready-to-hand” and “present-at-hand” is not equivalent to the pair “relational reality” and “non-relational reality.” Both of Heidegger’s famous modes of intraworldly being (Zuhandeheit, Vorhandenheit) exist purely in relation to human beings, and, despite Heidegger’s celebration of relational being as more primary than the non-relational sort, tools can relate only because they previously have a non-relational being. The hammer does not break because it is in relation to the entire construction site, but because it has an internal weakness or fracture that the construction site never took into account. But OOO adds yet another twist to the picture, one that takes us entirely outside the framework of post-Kantian philosophy. For Kant, human cognition is haunted by the thing-in-itself that lies beyond all possible human access. Yet for the OOO version of Heidegger, both theory and praxis only translate a deeper being of things that can never fully be deployed in its relations with us. In other words, the thing-in-itself escapes us not because we are humans who think, but because we are entities that relate, just like fire relating to cotton or raindrops to a tin roof. For this very reason, Kant’s point about the finitude of human perception and cognition ought to have been broadened into a point about the finitude of fire when it burns a cotton ball without interacting with all of the cotton’s properties, or the finitude of rain when it strikes the tin without relating to real features of the tin that happen to be irrelevant to rain. In short, the lead distinction in modern philosophy between thought and world must be replaced with one between objects and relations. It is this distinctly non-modern touch in OOO that leads many modernist (and “post”-modernist) observers to have a visceral dislike for what they wrongly regard as its bizarre personification of inanimate matter.

We now have the basic OOO model of the cosmos: it is packed full of objects that withdraw from each other, incapable of direct contact. Here we encounter another aspect of this philosophy that many critics find hard to swallow. For is it not obviously the case that objects influence each other all the time? Does science not calculate these interactions with extraordinary precision, using the results to make badly needed medical devices and launch probes deep into the solar system? OOO is aware of this, of course. Its point is not that objects do not make contact, but that they cannot do so directly. In an obvious-looking case such as two billiard balls colliding on a table, the collision obviously occurs; we do not dispute this point. But as seen from the OOO reading of Heidegger’s tool-analysis, the collision of these balls is really a question of both balls interacting only with the most superficial features of each other. When the red ball strikes the blue ball, it is not striking the blue ball itself, but only a translated blue ball accessible to the red ball’s fairly impoverished world. By way of these impoverished blue-ball-features, the red ball makes indirect contact with the blue ball itself, which also makes contact with its own blue-ball-features, though in a different way. It is a question of indirect causation or, as OOO calls it, vicarious causation.8 Already in early Islamic speculation, the Ash‘arite school of Basra held that God was not just the only Creator in the universe but also the only causal agent. As I put it at Goldsmiths: “[for such thinkers,] God is there to explain all actions, recreating everything constantly. And although the theology seems a bit outrageous to us now, it’s a very profound metaphysical idea, the idea that things cannot relate, inherently, that things-in-themselves are totally sealed off from each other” (374). After centuries of delay, this idea finally entered European philosophy as what we call occasionalism. For Descartes, God must be invoked to explain the otherwise baffling interactions of mind and matter. In the works of his admirer and successor Nicolas Malebranche (1638–1715), it is not just mind–body interactions but also body–body interactions (as with the earlier occasionalists of Iraq) that need God’s intervention to occur. God also plays an exclusive causal role in such pivotal modern philosophers as Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677), for whom the whole of nature is a single divine substance; G. W. von Leibniz (1646–1716), who held that the ultimate substances or monads “have no windows” but are pre-coordinated by God to seem like they interact; and Berkeley, for whom there are only images rather than independent things, with the images being coordinated by God to give us the impression of reliable natural laws, spiced up from time to time by amazing miracles to dazzle the faithful and convert the skeptic.

While this might seem like nothing more than a quaint closed chapter from the history of early modern philosophy, a variant of such occasionalism is found in more contemporary-looking modern philosophies such as those of Hume and Kant. While neither of these thinkers claims that causation is a matter of divine intervention, both root all causation in a different privileged entity: human experience. In Hume’s case, what we call cause and effect is merely our experience of a “customary conjunction” of food entering our mouths and abating our hunger or of placing our hands near a flame and feeling extreme heat. In Kant’s case, causation is turned even more explicitly into a category of the human understanding rather than a feature of the world outside the mind. As I said at Goldsmiths: “for the occasionalists: ‘No one else can [create relations between things]? Oh, God can do it.’ For Hume [and Kant], my mind does it, my mind creates objects (‘bundles’) through customary conjunctions, creates links” (375). Yet it seems utterly arbitrary to choose one magical super-entity – whether it be God or the human mind – able to create causal links when no other object is able to do so. This leads OOO in search of a different kind of solution.

That solution, oddly enough, comes from the phenomenology of Heidegger’s teacher Husserl. Although Husserl still has numerous allies who claim that he already knew what Heidegger teaches us about the withdrawal of things from immediate presence, this claim is untenable. For Husserl, it would be absurd to consider that something might exist that is not in principle the object of some conscious mind; in other words, Kant’s thing-in-itself is a contradictory notion. This puts him on the same side as the German Idealists in their dispute with Kant. As for Heidegger, though he is certainly not a consistent realist, and while he perpetually overstates the role of human Dasein in his philosophy, he is also the one who wrote as follows in his famous book on Kant: “What is the significance of the struggle initiated in German Idealism against the ‘thing in itself’ except a growing forgetfulness of what Kant had won, namely, the knowledge that the intrinsic possibility and necessity of metaphysics … are, at bottom, sustained and maintained by the original development and searching study of the problem of finitude?”9 In this respect, Heidegger remains much closer to OOO’s realism of the things-in-themselves than Husserl. Yet Husserl also adds some pieces to the puzzle that are simply invisible to Heidegger, and these pieces must not be lost amidst the general triumphalism over Heidegger’s advance beyond his teacher.
