O homem esteve durante muito tempo certo da sua essência: ele era um ser vivo dotado do logos, o animal racional. Pelo preço de um estranho desdobramento, mas tornado «evidente» pela força da banalização, a sua pertença à natureza estava incluída na sua definição. A tradição filosófica esforçou-se por resolver o melhor possível os conflitos entre o corpo e a alma, a sensibilidade e a razão, sem repor em questão a coabitação num só ser substancial destes princípios opostos. Assim, a inversão nietzschiana apenas confirma esta dupla identidade situando o corpo em primeiro plano como a «grande razão», e reduzindo a alma a um nome para uma dimensão do corpo.

Desde Descartes, a metafísica ficou cada vez mais certa igualmente do lugar central do homem como subjectum, base firme e subsistente de toda a verdade. E se para Kant a questão «o que é o homem?» contém as outras três questões fundamentais da filosofia , é porque apenas o homem reúne as determinações fenomenais da natureza e numenais da liberdade. Já a metafísica grega tinha construído uma antropologia, mas referia a essência do homem à constituição do ser do ente na totalidade, segundo uma fórmula enunciada por Aristóteles: he psyche ta onta pos esti panta, «a alma é de algum modo todos os entes». «Qualquer coisa que o próprio homem é, comenta Heidegger, e que não obstante o ultrapassa e se estende para além dele, entra sempre em jogo para determinar o ente como tal no seu conjunto» . A psyche em Platão e Aristóteles, como o logos de Heráclito, pertence à essência «física», que move todas as coisas. A metafísica moderna da subjectividade oferece, pelo contrário, uma estrutura quer antropocêntrica, quer antropomórfica: quer o próprio homem esteja no centro, estabelecendo pelo seu juízo a norma do verdadeiro, do bem, do belo, fazendo comparecer todas as coisas perante o tribunal da sua representação, a fim de examinar e de fundar a legitimidade da sua apresentação, quer a essência do sujeito humano, a vontade, se torne  —  com o triplo desdobramento da vontade de saber, de amar, de poder  —  a essência mais íntima das coisas, o ser do ente.

Mas uma outra tradição, que se apoia na narrativa da Gênese, ensina que o homem foi criado à imagem de Deus. Ele não tem apenas uma natureza, possui também uma relação essencial com a sobrenatureza, com a «transcendência», no sentido teleológico. «Deus disse: façamos o homem à nossa imagem (eikona) e semelhança (homoiosin)». O Homem traz na sua essência como que a marca do artesão na sua obra, a imagem, quer dizer, a analogia proporcional (homoiosis) do Todo-Poderoso e do Invisível. A teologia cristã acrescenta à animalidade racional  —  que retoma da tradição grega sem a repor em questão, pois o homem enquanto ens creatum é um ser natural, substancial  —, «a ideia da transcendência, segundo a qual o homem é além disso um ser dotado de razão». Reforçada com a certeza da revelação, a teologia produz uma nova cisão conflitual na essência humana: por um lado entre a natureza e a graça, entre o corpo e o espírito, ambos cativos do «mundano», e a alma, por outro, chamada à «vida sobrenatural».

Afastando-se desta dupla tradição tão antiga como o Ocidente, mas religando-se a ela pelo método da desconstrução, a analítica do Dasein como «ser-no-mundo» introduz, em primeiro lugar, a possibilidade extraordinariamente inovadora e fecunda de uma essência unitária do homem, desembaraçado dos seus antigos conflitos. Por certo aparece uma nova dualidade, a do autêntico e do inautêntico, do próprio e do não-próprio, de Si mesmo e da gente . Mas ela exclui a mistura da essência humana com o ser natural. Porquanto a questão da pertença do homem à natureza não seja suprimida, ela transforma-se na da «facticidade». Deste modo, a fenomenologia do Dasein só reencontra marginalmente o corpo como um limite do «mundo» ou, paralelamente, como a mão, capaz de manipular os instrumentos «ao-alcance-da-mão» (Zuhandenheit) ou de não intervir, deixando os entes simplesmente subsistir, literalmente «à-mão» (Vorhandenheit). O corpo humano é extirpado de qualquer definição puramente biológica, vital, animal, pois a análise revela-o como já estando sempre inserido e reentrado numa Stimmung, uma tonalidade afectiva que o produz, o transporta para fora de si para uma situação, o penetra de transcendência. Como dirá mais tarde Heidegger: «o corpo do homem é qualquer coisa de essencialmente diferente de um organismo animal». Ao definir o homem como zoon logon echon, a metafísica definiu-o «zoologicamente», de maneira naturalista e coisista, como homo animalis, falhando a verdadeira essência «ex-istente» do homo humanus. Ela esqueceu, por acréscimo, o sentido original da physis, como surgimento luminoso de presença que contém a palavra zoon, e também o sentido primeiro de logos, como tributo de presença, que a sua tradução por ratio ocultará completamente.

Porém, o conceito de Dasein introduz o atractivo de um descentramento da posição do homem, visto que o objectivo da analítica não é constituir uma nova antropologia, mas libertar uma via que permita colocar de novo a questão do ser. Desde a época do Ser e Tempo, a recusa da antropologia, tornada «uma espécie de depósito residual de todos os problemas filosóficos essenciais» , está ligada à recusa de uma tradição esclerosada, enredada em recuperações sucessivas e incapaz de pôr a questão do sentido do ser e do que compõe a natureza humana: a «vida», a «consciência», a «razão». Se Heidegger escolheu o termo de Dasein evitando os de «homem» e de «sujeito», foi antes de mais para não retomar os pressupostos e os preconceitos que estes termos veiculam, pois o Dasein é, com toda a certeza, completamente diferente do homem-sujeito da metafísica moderna. Ele caracteriza-se por uma relação consigo mesmo que é, de imediato, relação com o ser. O Dasein, com efeito, relaciona-se com o seu ser como tendo do ser esse ser. «Para esse ente ele encontra aí no seu ser esse ser». Heidegger chama à relação particular que o Dasein mantém com o seu ser existência (Existenz). Ora esta relação não é fechada sobre si mesma. Ela implica «de um modo cooriginário» a compreensão do «mundo» como conjunto de possibilidades práticas definidas, e a do ser do ente intramundano. O Dasein é «sempre meu», mas esta «mesmidade» é ao mesmo tempo a sua abertura ao mundo. «Compreender o ser» como ser-no-mundo significa simultaneamente compreender o seu ser num «mundo» onde ele encontra entes que têm o seu modo de ser e entes que não têm. É de notar que esta polissemia do ser para o Dasein faz dele «o ente exemplar», a partir do qual a analítica poderá orientar-se para a questão do «ser enquanto tal». Assim, a abertura a si do Dasein não é do tipo da reflexão, porque esta abertura a si passa sempre pelo mundo. De um mesmo golpe, encontra-se minada a evidência tradicional do laço necessário entre o pensamento como representação e a interioridade.

O Da, o «aí» do Dasein é abertura ao ser, a Lichtung: «ele é a clareira.»

Daí a primeira des-construção da definição de homem como zoon logon echon: tomar o homem, na sua essência, primeiro por um «vivente», é tomá-lo por Vorhanden, por um dado aí-à-frente, é tê-lo por um ente subsistente e por um «processo» (Vorkommen) intra-mundano, é esquecer a sua «existência». Em suma, a analítica existencial descentra duplamente o homem, ao mesmo tempo em relação à questão do ser enquanto tal  —  embora apenas a título programático  —  e dá ao mundo a prioridade sobre o ser-que-é-meu. Esta prioridade do mundo, como este «no quê» em que o Dasein já está sempre, como horizonte incontornável das suas actividades possíveis, não será ela contudo de novo reposta em questão quando a análise, na Segunda secção do Ser e Tempo, que procura a condição de possibilidade da autenticidade, desabrocha no tema da temporalidade ex-tática de Si? For a long time Man Was certain of his essence: he was the living being endowed with logos, he was the rational animal. At the expense of a strange doubling, yet one that had become “obvious” on account of its banality, man’s belonging to nature was included in this Definition of him. The philosophical tradition endeavored as best it could to resolve the conflicts between body and soul, sensibility and reason, without stopping to question the fact that these opposing principles dwelt together in a single substantive being. Thus Nietzsche’s inversion merely confirms this double identity by situating the body on the primary level as “grand reason,” and by reducing the soul to a name for a Dimension of the body.

Since Descartes, metaphysics has also been increasingly sure of the central place of man as subjectum, as the firm basis underlying every truth. And if for Kant the question “what is man?” contains the remaining three fundamental questions of philosophy, this is because man alone unites the phenomenal determinations of nature and the noumenal determinations of freedom. Greek metaphysics had already constructed an anthropology, yet it linked the essence of man to the constitution of the being of entities as a whole, in keeping with the Aristotelian formula: he psuche ta onta pos esti panta, “in a certain sense, the soul is all entities.” “Something that man himself is,” Heidegger comments, “and yet which exceeds him and extends beyond him, in each case comes into play for the purposes of determining entities as such as a whole.” Psuche in Plato and Aristotle, like the logos of Heraclitus, belongs to the “phusical” essence that moves all things. The modem metaphysics of subjectivity, on the other Hand, presents a structure that is either anthropocentric or anthropomorphic. Either man himself is at the center, establishing by virtue of his judgment the norms of the true, the good, and the beautiful, and comparing everything before the tribunal of his representation for the purpose of examining and founding the legitimacy of his presentation. Or else the essence of the human subject, the will — via the threefold deployment of the will to knowledge, to love, and to power — becomes the most intimate essence of things, the being of entities.

However another tradition, resting on the account in Genesis, teaches that man was created in the image of God. He has Not only a nature, but an essential relation to something supernatural, namely “transcendence” in the theological sense. “God said: Let us make man in our image (eikona) and likeness (homoiosin).” Man carries in his essence, like the hallmark of the worker on his work, the image or corresponding analogy (homoiosis) of the All Powerful and Invisible. Christian theology adds “the idea of transcendence, according to which man is more than a being endowed with understanding,” to reasonable animality, which it takes over from the Greek tradition without putting it in question, for man as ens creatum is a natural, substantial being. Secure in the certitude of revelation, theology produces a new conflictual scission within the human essence: between the side of nature and grace, body and spirit that are both held captive by the “worldly,” and the side of the soul called to the “supernatural life.”

Distancing itself from this dual tradition as old as the Western world, yet linking itself to it via the method of deconstruction, the analytic of Dasein as “being-in-the-world” initially introduces the extraordinarily novel and rich possibility of a unitary essence of man rid of his former conflicts. A new duality, that of the authentic and the inauthentic, of what is one’s own and not one’s own, of our own selves and the One, indeed appears. But it precludes mixing the human essence with natural being. The question of man’s belonging to nature is not suppressed either: it becomes transformed into that of “facticity.” Thus the phenomenology of Dasein encounters the body only marginally, as a limit of the “world,” or partially, as the hand capable of manipulating tools that are “ready to hand” (zuhanden) or of not intervening, of simply letting entities subsist, literally “at hand” (vorhanden). The human body has been extracted from any purely biological, vital, or animal definition, for the analysis shows it to be already inserted and taken up into an attunement, an affective mood or attunement that opens it and transports it outside itself into a situation, that penetrates it with transcendence. As Heidegger would later put it: “the human body is something essentially other than an anim al organism.” In defining man as zoon logon echon, metaphysics would have defined him “zoologically,” in a naturalistic and reified manner, as homo animalis, lacking the truely “ek-sistent” essence of homo humanus. It would, moreover, have forgotten the original meaning of phusis, namely, the luminous emergence of presence contained in the word zoon, as well as the primary meaning of logos as a gathering of presence, which would be completely concealed by translating it as ratio.

Yet the concept of Dasein also introduces the beginnings of a decentering of man’s position. For the aim of the analytic is not to constitute a new anthropology, but to discern a way that permits the question of being to be posed anew. Since the period of Being and Time, the refusal of anthropology, which has become “a sort of dustbin for central philosophical problems,” has been linked to the refusal of an ossified tradition, caught up in successive concealments and incapable of posing the question of the meaning of the being of what constitutes human nature: “life,” “conscience,” “reason.” If Heidegger chose the term Dasein, avoiding the terms man and subject, this was done primarily so as not to reintroduce the presuppositions and prejudices that these terms carry. For Dasein is certainly quite other than man as the subject of modem metaphysics. Dasein is characterized bv a relation to itself that is simultaneously a relation to being. Dasein indeed relates to its being as having to be this being. “This entity in its being is concerned with this being.” This particular relation that Dasein maintains with its being Heidegger calls existence (Existenz). Yet this relation is not, self-enclosed. It implies “equiprimordially” an understanding of “world” as a totality of practical, defined possibilities and an understanding of the being of intraworldiy entities. Dasein is “in each case mine,” but this “mineness” is simultaneously Dasein’s openness to world. For a being-in-the-world understanding being simultaneously means understanding its being in a “world” where it encounters entities that have and entities that do not have its mode of being. Note that this polysemy of being in the case of Dasein makes it the “exemplary entity” from which the analytic can orient itself towards the question of “being as such.” Thus Dasein’s openness to itself is not that of reflection, for its openness always passes through world. At the same time, the traditional self-evidence of a necessary link between thought as representation and inferiority is unsettled.

The Da, the “there” of Dasein, is its openness to being, the Lichtung: “it is itself the clearing.”

Whence the first de-construction of the definition of man as zoon logon echon: to take man, in his essence, in the first place as something “living” is to take him as vorhanden, as given at hand. It is to take him as an entity present at hand and as an intraworldly “process” (Vorkommen), to forget his “existence.” In sum, the existential analytic undertakes a double decentering of man, both by relating to the question of being as such—though only in the program it announces—and by giving the world priority over being-mine. Yet will not this priority of world (as that “in which” Dasein always already is, as the inevitable horizon of its possible activities) be put into question anew when, in Division Two of Being and Time, in search of the condition of the possibility of authenticity, the analysis will encroach on the theme of the ek-static temporality of the self?

For this work as a whole is marked by an ambiguity in respect of the place of the self (is it truly decentered?), its definition (is it a singular, concrete self or a purely transcendental self?) and its function (is it truly the ultimate source as authentic temporality?). If, thanks to its unitary structure, being-in-the-world indeed exceeds the traditional dualisms of man, it nonetheless maintains — though certainly displacing it — the most important propriety of the subject: its relation to itself, which leaves a doubt hanging over its self-constitution and self-positing. The “openness” of Dasein remains ambiguous because it is both an openness towards being or world, and an openness towards oneself that is constitutive of the self.

It was undoubtedly to escape such ambiguity that the later Heidegger would be impelled to abandon all the elements of reflexivity that Dasein was left with, and even the very word itself, reverting simply to man. But who is this man? The obedient bearer of the word and guardian of being. The place of the clearing. The one who says being when addressed by it. And finally, a “mortal” (xxvii) strangely divested of any ego, who no longer says “I” and no longer “possesses” any of the classical faculties of the subject. Is not this effort to break with the metaphysics of subjectivity that ends up with the tenuous, minimal, and bloodless figure of the “mortal” both excessive and, as Dominique Janicaud rightly says, “reactive”?  How far can the abandonment of inferiority, reflection, and the relation to oneself that constitutes a unique, individual component be pushed? Can man be reduced to an openness that is ultimately anonymous, to a purely “ekstatic” dimension? (p. xxiii-xxvii)

La psyché chez Platon et Aristote, comme le logos d’Héraclite, (10) appartient à l’essence «phusique» qui meut toutes choses. La métaphysique moderne de la subjectivité offre au contraire une structure soit anthropocentrique, soit anthropomorphique. Ou bien l’homme lui-même est au centre, établissant par son jugement la norme du vrai, du bien, du beau, faisant comparaître toute chose devant le tribunal de sa représentation, afin d’examiner et de fonder la légitimité de sa présentation. Il n’a pas seulement une nature, mais une relation Essentielle à la surnature, à la «transcendance», au sens théologique. «Dieu dit : faisons l’homme à notre image (eikona) et ressemblance (homoïôsin)». L’homme porte en son essence, comme la marque de l’ouvrier sur son ouvrage, l’image, c’est-à-dire l’Analogie proportionnelle (homoïôsis) du Tout Puissant et de l’invisible. La théologie chrétienne ajoute à l’animalité raisonnable — qu’elle reprend de la tradition grecque sans la remettre en question, car l’homme en tant qu’ens creatum est un être naturel, substantiel — «l’idée de la transcendance, selon laquelle l’homme est davantage qu’un être doué de raison». Forte de la certitude de la révélation, la théologie produit une nouvelle scission conflictuelle dans l’essence humaine : entre la nature et la grâce, entre le corps et l’esprit d’un côté, tous deux captivés par le «mondain», et l’âme de l’autre appelée à la «vie surnaturelle».

S’écartant de cette double tradition aussi vieille que l’Occident, mais se rattachant à elle par la méthode de la déconstruction, l’analytique du Dasein comme «être-au-monde» introduit d’abord la possibilité extraordinairement novatrice et féconde d’une essence unitaire de l’homme débarrassée de (11) ses anciens conflits. Certes une nouvelle dualité, celle de l’authentique et de Γinauthentique, du propre et du non propre, du Soi-même et du On, apparaît. Mais elle exclut le mélange de l’essence humaine avec l’être naturel. La question de l’appartenance de l’homme à la nature n’est pas supprimée pour autant : elle se transforme en celle de la «facticité». La phénoménologie du Dasein ne rencontre ainsi le corps que marginalement comme une limite du «monde», ou partiellement comme la main, capable de manier les outils «à portée-de-la-main» (Zuhandenheit) ou de ne pas intervenir, laissant les étants simplement subsister, littéralement «devant-la-main» (Vorhandenheit). Le corps humain est arraché à toute définition purement biologique, vitale, animale, car l’Analyse le révèle comme toujours déjà inséré et repris dans une Stimmung, une tonalité affective qui l’ouvre, le transporte hors de lui en une situation, le pénètre de transcendance. Comme le dira plus tard Heidegger : «le corps de l’homme est quelque chose d'essentiellement autre qu’un organisme animal». En définissant l’homme comme zôon logon échôn, la métaphysique l’aurait défini «zoologiquement», de façon naturaliste et chosiste, comme homo animalis, manquant la véritable essence «ek-sistante» de l’homo humanus. Elle aurait de surcroît oublié le sens originel de la phusis, comme surgissement lumineux de présence que contenait le mot zôon, de même que le sens premier de logos comme collecte de présence, que sa traduction par ratio occultera complètement.

Mais le concept de Dasein introduit également l’amorce d’un décentrement de la position de l’homme. Car le but de l’analytique n’est pas de constituer une nouvelle anthropologie, mais de dégager une voie qui permette de poser à nouveau la question de l’être. Dès l’époque d'Etre et temps, le refus de l’anthropologie, devenue «une sorte de dépotoir de tous les problèmes philosophiques essentiels», est lié au (12) refus d’une tradition sclérosée, empêtrée dans les recouvrements successifs et incapable de poser la question du sens d’être de ce qui compose la nature humaine : la «vie», la «conscience», la «raison». Si Heidegger a choisi le terme de Dasein en évitant ceux d’«homme» et de «sujet», c’est d’abord pour ne pas reconduire les présupposés et les préjugés que ces termes véhiculent. Car le Dasein est à coup sûr tout autre que l’homme-sujet de la métaphysique moderne. Il est caractérisé par un rapport à soi qui est d’emblée rapport à l’être. Le Dasein en effet se rapporte à son être comme ayant à être cet être. «Pour cet étant, il y va en son être de cet être». Ce rapport particulier que le Dasein entretient avec son être, Heidegger l’appelle existence (Existenz). Or ce rapport n’est pas fermé sur soi. Il implique «de façon cooriginaire» la compréhension du «monde» comme ensemble de possibilités pratiques définies, et celle de l’être de l’étant intramondain. Le Dasein est «toujours mien», mais cette «mienneté» est en même temps son ouverture au monde. «Comprendre l’être» pour l’être-au-monde signifie simultanément comprendre son être dans un «monde» où il rencontre des étants qui ont, et des étants qui n’ont pas son mode d’être. Notons que cette polysémie de l’être pour le Dasein fait de lui «l’étant exemplaire» à partir duquel l’analytique pourra s’orienter vers la question de «l’être comme tel». Ainsi l’ouverture à soi du Dasein n’est pas du type de la réflexion, parce que cette ouverture à soi passe toujours par le monde. Du même coup l’évidence traditionnelle du lien nécessaire de la pensée comme représentation et de l’intériorité se trouve ébranlée.

Le Da, le «là» du Dasein est l’ouverture à l’être, la Lichtung : «il est lui-même l’éclaircie».

D’où la première dé-construction de la définition de l’homme comme zôon logon échôn : prendre l’homme, en (13) son essence, d’abord pour un «vivant», c’est le prendre pour vorhanden, pour donné là-devant, c’est le tenir pour un étant subsistant et pour un «processus» (Vorkommen) intra-mon-dain, c’est oublier son «existence». En somme, l’analytique existentiale décentre doublement l’homme, à la fois par rapport à la question de l’être comme tel — quoique seulement à titre de programme — et en donnant au monde la priorité sur l’être-mien. Cette priorité du monde, comme ce «dans quoi» le Dasein est toujours déjà, comme horizon incontournable de ses activités possibles, ne sera-t-elle pas cependant à nouveau remise en question lorsque l’analyse, dans la Deuxième Section de Etre et temps, cherchant la condition de possibilité de l’authenticité, débouchera sur le thème de la temporalité ek-statique du Soi ?
