Essa distinção entre pensar e julgar só veio a merecer destaque com a filosofia política de Kant — o que não é de se estranhar, já que Kant foi o primeiro e permaneceu sendo o último dos grandes filósofos a lidar com o juízo como uma das atividades espirituais básicas. Pois o que importa é que nos vários tratados e ensaios que Kant escreveu tardiamente, o ponto de vista do espectador não é determinado pelos imperativos categóricos da razão prática, isto é, pela resposta da razão à pergunta “O que devo fazer?”. Essa resposta é moral e diz respeito ao indivíduo como indivíduo, em plena independência autônoma da razão. Como tal, ele jamais pode, de um modo moral-prático, reclamar para si o direito de rebelar-se. Ainda assim, o mesmo indivíduo — não quando age, mas quando é um mero espectador — tem o direito de julgar e de emitir o veredito final sobre a Revolução Francesa unicamente com base em sua “ansiosa participação, beirando o entusiasmo”, em seu desejo de compartilhar da “exaltação do público não envolvido”, baseando-se, em outras palavras, no juízo dos espectadores, seus semelhantes, que também não tinham “a menor intenção de participar” dos eventos. E foi o veredito deles, em última análise, e não o desempenho dos atores, que persuadiu Kant a chamar a Revolução Francesa de “um fenômeno na história humana [que] não deve ser esquecido.” Nesse choque entre a ação participante e conjunta — sem a qual, afinal, os eventos a serem julgados jamais teriam chegado a existir — e o juízo observador e reflexivo, Kant não tem dúvidas sobre qual deles deve ter a última palavra. Supondo que a história seja apenas a história miserável dos eternos altos e baixos da humanidade, o espetáculo de som e fúria “poderá, talvez, ser comovente por algum tempo; mas a cortina eventualmente deve cair. Pois ao cabo de certo tempo, o espetáculo torna-se uma farsa. E mesmo que os atores não se cansem dele — pois eles são tolos —, o espectador se cansará, pois um único ato será para ele suficiente se puder dele concluir que a peça interminavelmente encenada será eternamente a mesma.” (grifos nossos)

Esta é, de fato, uma passagem reveladora. Se a ela acrescentamos a convicção kantiana de que os assuntos humanos são guiados pelo “ardil da natureza”, que conduz a espécie humana por trás dos homens de ação — em um perpétuo progresso, assim como a “astúcia da razão” de Hegel leva os homens à revelação do Espírito Absoluto —, poderemos encontrar justificativa para a questão; ou nem todos os atores são tolos, ou o espetáculo, ao revelar-se somente ao espectador, não poderia também estar a serviço dos tolos. Com qualificações mais ou menos sofisticadas, essa sempre foi a suposição secreta dos filósofos da história, isto é, daqueles pensadores da era moderna que, pela primeira vez, decidiram levar a sério o bastante a esfera dos assuntos humanos — os ta ton anthropon pragmata de Platão — para chegar a refletir sobre ela. E não estariam certos? Não é verdade que “das ações dos homens resulta algo diferente do que eles tencionavam e do que chegam a realizar, algo diferente do que conhecem ou do que querem?” “Para fazer uma analogia, um homem pode incendiar a casa de outro por vingança... A ação imediata é a de aproximar uma pequena chama de uma pequena parte de uma viga de madeira... [O que se segue é] uma vasta conflagração ... Esse resultado não foi parte do ato primeiro nem a intenção daquele que o iniciou ... Esse exemplo apenas mostra que na ação imediata pode estar envolvido algo diferente daquilo que é conscientemente desejado pelo ator.” (Estas são palavras de Hegel, mas poderiam ter sido escritas por Kant.) Em ambos os casos, não é por meio da ação, mas da contemplação, que o “algo diferente”, a saber, o significado do todo, é revelado. O espectador, e não o ator, tem a chave do significado dos negócios humanos — apenas, e isto é decisivo, os espectadores de Kant existem no plural, e é esta a razão pela qual ele pôde chegar a uma filosofia política. O espectador de Hegel existe estritamente no singular: o filósofo torna-se o órgão do Espírito Absoluto e o filósofo é o próprio Hegel. Mas mesmo Kant, mais consciente da pluralidade humana do que qualquer outro filósofo, pôde esquecer, convenientemente, que se o espetáculo fosse sempre o mesmo, e, portanto, fosse cansativo, as audiências mudariam de geração para geração; e que seria pouco provável que uma nova audiência chegasse às mesmas conclusões legadas pela tradição sobre o que teria a dizer uma peça imutável.

This distinction between thinking and judging only came to the fore with Kant’s political philosophy—not surprisingly, since Kant was the first, and has remained the last, of the great philosophers to deal with judgment as one of the basic mental activities. For the point of the matter is that in the various treatises and essays, all written late in Kant’s life, the spectator’s viewpoint is not determined by the categorical imperatives of practical reason, that is, reason’s answer to the question What ought I to do? That answer is moral and concerns the individual qua individual, in the full autonomous independence of reason. As such, in a moral-practical way, he can never claim the right to rebel. And yet, the same individual, when he happens not to act but to be a mere spectator, will have the right to judge and to render the final verdict on the French Revolution on- no other grounds than his “wishful participation bordering on enthusiasm,” his sharing in the “exaltation of the uninvolved public,” his basing himself, in other words, on the judgment of his fellow-spectators, who also had not “the least intention of assisting” in the events. And it was their verdict, in the last analysis, and not the deeds of the actors, that persuaded Kant to call the French Revolution “a phenomenon in human history [which] is not to be forgotten.”((“Der Streit der Fakultäten,” pt. II, 6 and 7, Werke, vol. VI, pp. 357–362.)) In this clash between joint, participating action, without which, after all, the events to be judged would never have come into being, and reflecting, observing judgment, there is no doubt for Kant as to which should have the last word. Assuming that history is nothing but the miserable story of mankind’s eternal ups and downs, the spectacle of sound and fury “may perhaps be moving for a while; but the curtain must eventually descend. For in the long run, it becomes a farce. And even if the actors do not tire of it—for they are fools—the spectator does, for any single act will be enough for him if he can reasonably conclude from it that the never-ending play will be of eternal sameness” (italics added).((“Ueber den Gemeinspruch,” Werke, vol. VI, pp. 166-167))

This is a telling passage indeed. And if we add to it Kant’s conviction that human affairs are guided by the “ruse of nature,” which leads the human species, behind the backs of acting men, into a perpetual progress, just as Hegel’s “ruse of reason” leads them to the revelation of the Absolute Spirit, we may well be justified in asking if all actors are not fools, or if the spectacle, revealing itself only to the spectator, would not just as well be served by the acts of fools. With more or less sophisticated qualifications, this has always been the secret assumption of the philosophers of history, that is, of those thinkers of the modern age who, for the first time, decided to take the realm of human affairs—Plato’s ta tōn anthrōpōn pragmata—seriously enough to reflect upon it. And are they right? Is it not true that “something else results from the actions of men than what they intend and achieve, something else than they know or want”? “To give an analogy, a man may set fire to the house of another out of revenge.... The immediate action is to hold a small flame to a small part of a beam.... [What follows is] a vast conflagration.... This result was neither part of the primary deed nor the intention of him who commenced it.... This example merely shows that in the immediate action something else may be involved than is consciously willed by the actor.”((Hegel, Philosophie der Weltgeschichte, Introduction.)) (These are Hegel’s words, but they could have been written by Kant.) In either case it is not through acting but through contemplating that the “something else,” namely, the meaning of the whole, is revealed. The spectator, not the actor, holds the clue to the meaning of human affairs—only, and this is decisive, Kant’s spectators exist in the plural, and this is why he could arrive at a political philosophy. Hegel’s spectator exists strictly in the singular: the philosopher becomes the organ of the Absolute Spirit, and the philosopher is Hegel himself. But even Kant, more aware than any other philosopher of human plurality, could conveniently forget that even if the spectacle were always the same and therefore tiresome, the audiences would change from generation to generation; nor would a fresh audience be likely to arrive at the conclusions handed down by tradition as to what an unchanging play has to tell it.
