Minha preocupação com as atividades espirituais tem origem em duas fontes bastante distintas. O impulso imediato derivou do fato de eu ter assistido ao julgamento de Eichmann em Jerusalém. Em meu relato ((Hermman Diels e Walther Kranz, Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker, Berlim, 1960, vol. I, frag. B4.)), mencionei a “banalidade do mal”. Por trás desta expressão não procurei sustentar nenhuma tese ou doutrina, muito embora estivesse vagamente consciente de que ela se opunha à nossa tradição de pensamento — literário, teológico ou filosófico — sobre o fenômeno do mal. Aprendemos que o mal é algo demoníaco; sua encarnação é Satã, “um raio caído do céu” (Lucas 10:18), ou Lúcifer, o anjo decaído (“O demônio também é um anjo”, Unamuno), cujo pecado é o orgulho (“orgulhoso como Lúcifer”), isto é, aquela superbia de que só os melhores são capazes: eles não querem servir a Deus, mas ser como Ele. Diz-se que os homens maus agem por inveja; e ela pode ser tanto ressentimento pelo insucesso, mesmo que não se tenha cometido nenhuma falta (Ricardo III), quanto propriamente a inveja de Caim, que matou Abel porque “o Senhor teve estima por Abel e por sua oferenda, mas por Caim e sua oferenda ele não teve nenhuma estima”. Ou podem ter sido movidos pela fraqueza (Macbeth). Ou ainda, ao contrário, pelo ódio poderoso que a maldade sente pela pura bondade (“Odeio o Mouro: o que me move é o coração”, de lago; o ódio de Claggart pela “bárbara” inocência de Billy Budd, um ódio que Melville considerou “uma depravação com relação à natureza humana”); ou pela cobiça, “a raiz de todo o mal” (Radix omnium malorum cupiditas). Aquilo com que me defrontei, entretanto, era inteiramente diferente e, no entanto, inegavelmente factual. O que me deixou aturdida foi que a conspicua superficialidade do agente tornava impossível retraçar o mal incontestável de seus atos, em suas raízes ou motivos, em quaisquer níveis mais profundos. Os atos eram monstruosos, mas o agente — ao menos aquele que [6] estava agora em julgamento — era bastante comum, banal, e não demoníaco ou monstruoso. Nele não se encontrava sinal de firmes convicções ideológicas ou de motivações especificamente más, e a única característica notória que se podia perceber tanto em seu comportamento anterior quanto durante o próprio julgamento e o sumário de culpa que o antecedeu era algo de inteiramente negativo: não era estupidez, mas irreflexão. No âmbito dos procedimentos da prisão e da corte israelenses, ele funcionava como havia funcionado sob o regime nazista; mas quando confrontado com situações para as quais não havia procedimentos de rotina, parecia indefeso e seus clichês produziam, na tribuna, como já haviam evidentemente produzido em sua vida funcional, uma espécie de comédia macabra. Clichês, frases feitas, adesão a códigos de expressão e conduta convencionais e padronizados têm a função socialmente reconhecida de nos proteger da realidade, ou seja, da exigência de atenção do pensamento feita por todos os fatos e acontecimentos em virtude de sua mera existência. Se respondêssemos todo o tempo a esta exigência, logo estaríamos exaustos; Eichmann se distinguia do comum dos homens unicamente porque ele, como ficava evidente, nunca havia tomado conhecimento de tal exigência.

Foi essa ausência de pensamento — uma experiência tão comum em nossa vida cotidiana, em que dificilmente temos tempo e muito menos desejo de parar e pensar — que despertou meu interesse. Será o fazer-o-mal (pecados por ação e omissão) possível não apenas na ausência de “motivos torpes” (como a lei os denomina), mas de quaisquer outros motivos, na ausência de qualquer estímulo particular ao interesse ou à volição? Será que a maldade — como quer que se defina este estar “determinado a ser vilão” — não é uma condição necessária para o fazer-o-mal? Será possível que o problema do bem e do mal, o problema de nossa faculdade para distinguir o que é certo do que é errado, esteja conectado com nossa faculdade de pensar? Por certo, não, no sentido de que o pensamento pudesse ser capaz de produzir o bem como resultado, como se a “virtude pudesse ser ensinada” e aprendida — somente os hábitos e costumes podem ser ensinados e nós sabemos muito bem com que alarmante rapidez eles podem ser desaprendidos e esquecidos quando as novas circunstâncias exigem uma mudança nos modos e padrões de comportamento. (O fato de que habitualmente se trata de assuntos ligados ao problema do bem e do mal em cursos de “moral” ou de “ética” pode indicar quão pouco sabemos sobre eles, pois moral deriva de mores e ética de ethos, respectivamente os termos latino e grego para designar os costumes e os hábitos—estando a palavra latina associada a regras de comportamento e a grega sendo derivada de habitação, como a nossa palavra “hábitos”). A ausência de pensamento com que me defrontei não provinha nem do esquecimento de boas maneiras e bons hábitos, nem da estupidez, no sentido de inabilidade para compreender— nem mesmo no sentido de “insanidade moral”, pois ela era igualmente notória nos casos que nada tinham a ver com as assim chamadas decisões éticas ou os assuntos de consciência.

A questão que se impunha era: seria possível que a atividade do pensamento como tal — o hábito de examinar o que quer que aconteça ou chame a atenção independentemente de resultados e conteúdo específico — estivesse dentre as condições que levam os homens a se absterem de fazer o mal, ou mesmo que ela realmente os “condicione” contra ele? (A própria palavra “consciência”, em todo o caso, aponta nesta direção, uma vez que significa “saber comigo e por mim mesmo”, um tipo de conhecimento que é atualizado em todo processo de pensamento). E não estará esta hipótese reforçada por tudo o que sabemos sobre a consciência, isto é, que uma “boa consciência” em geral só é apreciada por pessoas realmente más, criminosas e tais, ao passo que somente “pessoas boas” são capazes de ter uma má-consciência? Dizendo de outra maneira e utilizando uma linguagem kantiana: tendo sido aturdida por um fato que, queira eu ou não, “me pôs na posse de um conceito” (a banalidade do mal), não me era possível deixar de levantar a quaestio juris e me perguntar “com que direito eu o possuía e utilizava”.((Confessions, Livro XI, cap. 13.))

Factually, my preoccupation with mental activities has two rather different origins. The immediate impulse came from my attending the Eichmann trial in Jerusalem. In my report of it ((Hermman Diels e Walther Kranz, Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker, Berlim, 1960, vol. I, frag. B4.)) I spoke of “the banality of evil.” Behind that phrase, I held no thesis or doctrine, although I was dimly aware of the fact that it went counter to our tradition of thought—literary, theological, or philosophic—about the phenomenon of evil. Evil, we have learned, is something demonic; its incarnation is Satan, a “lightning fall from heaven” (Luke 10:18), or Lucifer, the fallen angel (“The devil is an angel too”—Unamuno) whose sin is pride (“proud as Lucifer”), namely, that superbia of which only the best are capable: they don’t want to serve God but to be like Him. Evil men, we are told, act out of envy; this may be resentment at not having turned out well through no fault of their own (Richard III) or the envy of Cain, who slew Abel because “the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard.” Or they may be prompted by weakness (Macbeth). Or, on the contrary, by the powerful hatred wickedness feels for sheer goodness (Iago’s “I hate the Moor: my cause is hearted”; Clag-gart’s hatred for Billy Budd’s “barbarian” innocence, a hatred considered by Melville a “depravity according to nature”), or by covetousness, “the root of all evil” (Radix omnium malorum cupiditas). However, what I was confronted with was utterly different and still undeniably factual. I was struck by a manifest shallowness in the doer that made it impossible to trace the uncontestable evil of his deeds to any deeper level of roots or motives. The deeds were monstrous, but the doer—at least the very effective one now on trial—was quite ordinary, commonplace, and neither demonic nor monstrous. There was no sign in him of firm ideological convictions or of specific evil motives, and the only notable characteristic one could detect in his past behavior as well as in his behavior during the trial and throughout the pre-trial police examination was something entirely negative: it was not stupidity but thoughtlessness. In the setting of Israeli court and prison procedures he functioned as well as he had functioned under the Nazi regime but, when confronted with situations for which such routine procedures did not exist, he was helpless, and his cliché-ridden language produced on the stand, as it had evidently done in his official life, a kind of macabre comedy. Clichés, stock phrases, adherence to conventional, standardized codes of expression and conduct have the socially recognized function of protecting us against reality, that is, against the claim on our thinking attention that all events and facts make by virtue of their existence. If we were responsive to this claim all the time, we would soon be exhausted; Eichmann differed from the rest of us only in that he clearly knew of no such claim at all.

It was this absence of thinking—which is so ordinary an experience in our everyday life, where we have hardly the time, let alone the inclination, to stop and think—that awakened my interest. Is evil-doing (the sins of omission, as well as the sins of commission) possible in default of not just “base motives” (as the law calls them) but of any motives whatever, of any particular prompting of interest or volition? Is wickedness, however we may define it, this being “determined to prove a villain,” not a necessary condition for evil-doing? Might the problem of good and evil, our faculty for telling right from wrong, be connected with our faculty of thought? To be sure, not in the sense that thinking would ever be able to produce the good deed as its result, as though “virtue could be taught” and learned—only habits and customs can be taught, and we know only too well the alarming speed with which they are unlearned and forgotten when new circumstances demand a change in manners and patterns of behavior. (The fact that we usually treat matters of good and evil in courses in “morals” or “ethics” may indicate how little we know about them, for morals comes from mores and ethics from ethos, the Latin and the Greek words for customs and habit, the Latin word being associated with rules of behavior, whereas the Greek is derived from habitat, like our “habits”) The absence of thought I was confronted with sprang neither from forgetfulness of former, presumably good manners and habits nor from stupidity in the sense of inability to comprehend—not even in the sense of “moral insanity,” for it was just as noticeable in instances that had nothing to do with so-called ethical decisions or matters of conscience.

The question that imposed itself was: Could the activity of thinking as such, the habit of examining whatever happens to come to pass or to attract attention, regardless of results and specific content, could this activity be among the conditions that make men abstain from evil-doing or even actually “condition” them against it? (The very word “con-science,” at any rate, points in this direction insofar as it means “to know with and by myself,” a kind of knowledge that is actualized in every thinking process.) And is not this hypothesis enforced by everything we know about conscience, namely, that a “good conscience” is enjoyed as a rule only by really bad people, criminals and such, while only “good people” are capable of having a bad conscience? To put it differently and use Kantian language: after having been struck by a fact that, willy-nilly, “put me in possession of a concept” (the banality of evil), I could not help raising the quaestio juris and asking myself “by what right I possessed and used it.”((Confessions, bk.
