| + | For a long time now we Westerners have thought of memory as a kind of typography whereby vestiges of persons, places, and things are incised or “typed” in the wax tablet of the mind. Even after the moment of perception has passed, such characters or types perdure as memory traces. Their very perdurance implies that these traces or images Stand in iconographie relation to “the things themselves.” Typography produces—or at least promises—an iconography. Yet time passes. Persons, places, and things go by. The icons we retain are present to us when we remember, but the things themselves are absent, past, bygone. The only way to restore the presence of what is past is to glean the icons as though they were constitutive of the (past) things themselves, “constitutive” in the way that letters constitute a text. Remembering is a kind of reading, moving through a medium that effaces itself absolutely and lets the (past) things show themselves through its diaphane. Just as you who are reading these lines and letters of mine now glide across them effortlessly in order to see what I mean, so too can the icons of memory, inscribed typographically, | ||
