Erwartung, attente, aguardo, espera

Expecting is an attitude directed at possible future events, in which one regards them as probable or likely to occur. Heidegger says, “as care, Dasein is essentially ahead of itself’ (SZ   337). Obviously, expecting is one way of being ahead of oneself. However, as Being and Time §68 (“The Temporality of Disclosedness in General,” SZ 335-46) explains, expecting and awaiting (Gewärtigen) are not the same. Awaiting is the ground of expectation; expectation arises from the existentiell understanding of the future in terms of specific possibilities. Heidegger says, ‘‘only because factical Dasein is thus awaiting its ability-to-be, and is awaiting this ability in terms of that with which it concerns itself, can it expect [erwarten] anything and wait for it” (SZ 337). Thus, in expecting Dasein is ahead of itself inauthentically: “inauthentic understanding projects itself upon that with which one can concern oneself, or upon what is feasible, urgent, or indispensable in our everyday business” (SZ 337).
