A imagem de Dilthey ainda hoje muito difundida é a seguinte: um intérprete “sutil” da história do espírito, em particular da história da literatura, que se empenha “também” na delimitação das ciências do espírito em face das ciências da natureza, atribuindo um papel privilegiado à história daquelas ciências do mesmo modo que à “psicologia” e que deixa o todo se diluir numa relativista “filosofia da vida”. Para uma consideração superficial esse “esboço” é correto. A “substância”, porém, lhe escapa, e a encobre mais do que descobre.

O trabalho de pesquisa de Dilthey pode ser esquematicamente dividido em três domínios: estudos sobre a teoria das ciências do espírito e sua delimitação diante das ciências da natureza; pesquisas sobre a história das ciências do homem, da sociedade e do Estado; esforços para conceber uma psicologia na qual se deveria exibir “o fato humano total”. Investigações em que teoria da ciência, história-da-ciência e investigações-hermenêutico-psicológicas (1075) se interpenetram e estão constantemente em interseção. Onde uma perspectiva prevalece, as outras também já entram como motivo ou como meio. O que parece uma discordância ou “prova” incerta e casual é, no entanto, efeito de uma inquietação elementar que tende para um único alvo: alcançar um entendimento filosófico da “vida”, assegurando-lhe um fundamento hermenêutico a partir da “vida ela mesma”. Tudo é centrado na “psicologia”, a qual deve entender a “vida” em seu encadeamento-de-desenvolvimento histórico e em seu encadeamento-de-efeito, como o modo pelo qual o homem é o possível objeto das ciências do espírito e, ao mesmo tempo, a raiz dessas ciências. A hermenêutica é a interpretação-de-si desse entendimento e só de forma derivada ela é metodologia do conhecimento-histórico. (p. 1075, 1077)

L’image de Dilthey répandue Aujourd’hui encore un peu partout est la suivante : il est le « subtil » exégète de l’histoire intellectuelle, en particulier littéraire, qui s’est « également » efforcé de faire le départ entre les sciences de la nature et celles de l’esprit, qui attribue par là un rôle éminent à l’histoire de ces sciences ainsi qu’à la « psychologie » et fait baigner le tout dans une « philosophie de la vie » relativiste. A ne considérer les choses qu’en surface, ce signalement est « correct ». Mais la « substance » lui fait défaut. Il dissimule plus qu’il ne révèle.

Schématiquement, les investigations auxquelles a travaillé Dilthey peuvent se diviser en trois secteurs : des études concernant la théorie des sciences de l’esprit et leur délimitation par rapport aux sciences de la nature ; des investigations sur l’histoire des sciences de l’homme, de la société et de l’État; des efforts en vue d’une psychologie dans laquelle il s’agit d’exposer « l’être humain comme fait total ». Recherches sur la théorie de la science, sur l’histoire de la science et sur la psychologie herméneutique s’interpénétrent et se croisent constamment. Là où une perspective a la prépondérance, les autres entrent aussi en jeu à titre de motif et de moyen. Ce qui paraît être un ferment de trouble et un « tâtonnement » mal assuré, c’est l’inquiétude élémentaire qui s’attache à son unique but : parvenir à une entente philosophique de la « vie » et assurer à cet entendre un soubassement herméneutique dû à la « vie elle-même ». Tout se centre sur la « psychologie » qui doit entendre la « vie » dans l’ensemble historial de son développement et de son action comme la manière en laquelle l’homme est à la fois objet possible des sciences de l’esprit et racine de ces sciences. L’herméneutique, ce sont les lumières que cet entendre se donne à lui-même et d’abord sous la forme dérivée de la méthodologie de la science historique. (p. 463)

The image of Dilthey which is still widely disseminated today is that of the ‘sensitive’ interpreter of the history of the spirit, especially the history of literature, who ‘also’ endeavours to distinguish between the natural and the humane sciences, thereby assigning (zuweist) a distinctive role to the history of the latter group and likewise to ‘psychology’, then allowing the whole to merge together in a relativistic ‘philosophy of life’. Considered superficially, this sketch is ‘correct’. But the ‘substance’ eludes it, and it covers up more than it reveals.

We may divide Dilthey’s researches schematically into three domains: studies on the theory of the humane sciences, and the distinction between these and the natural sciences; researches into the history of the sciences of Man, society, and the state; endeavours towards a psychology in which the ‘whole fact of man’ is to be presented. Investigations in the theory of science, in historical science, and in psychological hermeneutics are constantly permeating and intersecting each other. Where any one point of view predominates, the others are the motives and the means. What looks like disunity and an unsure, ‘haphazard’ way of ‘trying things out’, is an elemental restlessness, the one goal of which is to understand ‘life’ philosophically and to secure for this understanding a hermeneutical foundation in terms of ‘life itself’. Everything centres in psychology, in which ‘life’ is to be understood in the historical context of its development and its effects, and understood as the way in which man, as the possible object of the humane sciences, and especially as the root of these sciences, is. Hermeneutics is the way this understanding enlightens itself; it is also the methodology of historiology, though only in a derivative form. (p. 450)

Das heute vielfach noch verbreitete Bild Diltheys ist folgendes: der »feinsinnige« Ausleger der Geistes-, im besonderen Literaturgeschichte, (398) der sich »auch« um eine Abgrenzung der Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften bemüht, dabei der Geschichte dieser Wissenschaften und ebenso der »Psychologie« eine ausgezeichnete Rolle zuweist und das Ganze in einer relativistischen »Lebensphilosophie« verschwimmen läßt. Für die Oberflächenbetrachtung ist diese Zeichnung »richtig«. Ihr entgeht aber die »Substanz«. Sie verdeckt mehr, als sie enthüllt.

Schematisch läßt sich die Forschungsarbeit Diltheys in drei Bezirke aufteilen: Studien zur Theorie der Geisteswissenschaften und ihrer Abgrenzung von den Naturwissenschaften; Forschungen über die Geschichte der Wissenschaften vom Menschen, der Gesellschaft und dem Staat; Bemühungen um eine Psychologie, in der die »ganze Tatsache Mensch« zur Darstellung gebracht Werden soll. Wissenschaftstheoretische, wissenschaftsgeschichtliche und hermeneutisch-psychologische Untersuchungen durchdringen und überschneiden sich ständig. Wo die eine Blickrichtung vorwiegt, sind die Anderen auch schon Motiv und Mittel. Was sich Wie Zwiespältigkeit und unsicheres, zufälliges »Probieren« ausnimmt, ist die elementare Unruhe zu dem einen Ziel: das »Leben« zum philosophischen Verständnis zu bringen, und diesem Verstehen aus dem »Leben Selbst« ein hermeneutisches Fundament zu sichern. Alles zentriert in der »Psychologie«, die das »Leben« in seinem geschichtlichen Entwicklungs- und Wirkungszusammenhang verstehen soll als die Weise, in der der Mensch ist, als möglichen Gegenstand der Geisteswissenschaften und als Wurzel dieser Wissenschaften zumal. Die Hermeneutik ist die Selbstaufklärung dieses Verstehens und erst in abgeleiteter Form Methodologie der Historie. (p. 398)
