Citemos mais um fenômeno corporal (Leibphänomen) pelo seguinte exemplo: se eu vejo o batente da janela e pego na “mão” o copo que está na minha frente sobre a mesa, então o batente da janela está no meu olho, assim como o copo está na minha mão? Certamente não. Mas onde está a diferença que verificamos facilmente, porém sem poder determiná-la de imediato? Pois a mão é um órgão do nosso corpo (Leib) tanto quanto o olho. Perguntamos, pois: qual é a diferença entre estes dois órgãos, uma vez que ambos pertencem ao corpo? Pode-se dizer que também a imagem do batente da janela na retina está no meu olho. Mas não posso ver a imagem da retina. A imagem da retina não é o batente da janela, e a pergunta é se este batente da janela que eu vejo – e não se a imagem da retina – está em meu olho, assim como o copo em minha mão. Há, pois, evidentemente uma diferença entre o modo como eu vejo “com” o meu olho e como pego “com” a minha mão. O que o corpo tem a ver com isso? Quando eu pego o copo, eu não apenas pego o copo, também posso ver simultaneamente minha mão e o copo. Mas não posso ver o meu olho e o meu ver e muito menos, pegá-los. No ver e ouvir dirigidos diretamente para o “mundo”, o olho e o ouvido desaparecem de forma estranha. Se uma outra pessoa quiser verificar como, de que forma o olho atua no processo da visão, como ele é formado anatomicamente, então ele tem que ver meu olho, assim como eu vejo o batente da janela.

O olho é chamado de órgão do sentido. E a mão? Dificilmente podemos defini-la como órgão do sentido. Mas faz parte dela o sentido do tato. Entretanto, a mão é diferente de um conjunto móvel de campos móveis do tato – talvez um órgão preênsil? Então, o que é o ver em comparação ao pegar? Por um lado, no ver, o próprio olho não é visto, mas a mão não só é vista ao pegar, como eu até posso pegá-la com a outra mão. Quando pego o copo eu sinto o copo e a minha mão. Esta é a chamada sensação dupla, isto é, o sentir do que é tocado e o sentir de minha mão. Ao ver não sinto o meu olho desta maneira. O olho não toca. Por outro lado, há sensações de pressão no olho se alguém me bate no olho. Mas isto é um fenômeno completamente diferente. Mas não sentimos também o movimento do olho, por exemplo, quando olhamos para o lado? Entretanto, o que é sentido desta forma não pode ser classificado como “sensação dupla”, pois não sinto a janela que eu vejo quando lhe dirijo o olhar. A diferença entre o ver o batente da janela e ver minha mão está, entre outras coisas, em que a mão é minha e o batente da janela é da janela que está ali. Percebe-se a mão, porque é minha mão em sua posição também a partir “de dentro”. Seria, por isto, o corpo algo interno? A que está ligado o fato de que ao pegar eu vejo a mão, e ao ver não vejo o olho?

Ao segurar, a mão está em contato direto com o segurado. Meu olho não está neste contato direto com o que é visto. O que é visto está em meu campo de visão, isto é, está em frente dos meus olhos. Sempre só posso olhar para frente. Mas o copo que peguei também está diante de mim. Entretanto só posso pegar o copo – estando sentado à mesa – se ele estiver restrito ao meu alcance. Pegar só é possível se algo está ao alcance da mão. Por isso chama-se o tato de sentido-perto. Ver, o sentido-longe.

Pode o físico dizer algo sobre o fenômeno do ver? Ele pode estabelecer que ver implica fontes de luz, mas quando se vê o batente da janela nada disto está aí.

O olho, diz-se, é “superior” ao pegar. Pode-se controlar o ato de pegar com o ato de ver, porque o olhar é essencialmente dirigido ao longe assim como o ouvir. Mas num quarto escuro também posso “controlar” o ver pelo pegar. Se o ver alcança mais longe do que o pegar, evidentemente o pegar e o ver estão ligados à relação de espaço. [GA89:110-111]

Mencionemos otro fenómeno corporal mediante el siguiente ejemplo: si aprehendo «visualmente» el crucero de la ventana que está allá y tomo «con la mano» el vaso que está frente a mí sobre la mesa, ¿entonces está el crucero de la ventana en mi ojo como está el vaso en mi mano? Ciertamente no. Pero, ¿dónde se halla la diferencia, que verificamos fácilmente, sin poder determinarla de inmediato? La mano es un órgano de nuestro cuerpo (Leib) tanto como el ojo. Por eso preguntamos: ¿en qué se diferencian ambos órganos, ya que ambos pertenecen al cuerpo (Leib)? Se puede decir que la imagen retiniana del crucero de la ventana se halla en mi ojo. Pero yo no puedo ver la imagen retiniana. Sin embargo, la imagen retiniana no es el crucero de la ventana y la pregunta es si este crucero de la ventana que veo -y no la imagen retiniana- está en mi ojo así como está el vaso en mi mano. Evidentemente, hay, pues, una diferencia entre el modo como veo «con» mi ojo y como agarro «con» mi mano. ¿Qué tiene que ver el cuerpo (Leib) con esto? Cuando agarro el vaso, agarro no solamente el vaso; al mismo tiempo puedo ver mi mano y el vaso. Pero no puedo ver ni mi ojo ni mi ver, ni mucho menos agarrarlos. En el ver y oír dirigidos directamente al «mundo», el ojo y el oído desaparecen en forma extraña. Si otra persona quisiera constatar cómo actúa el ojo en el proceso de la visión, cómo está formado anatómicamente, entonces debe ver mi ojo, así como yo veo el crucero de la ventana.

El ojo es llamado órgano de los sentidos. ¿Y la mano? Difícilmente podemos caracterizarla como un órgano de los sentidos. Pero a ella pertenece el sentido del tacto. Entretanto, la mano es diferente a un conjunto móvil de campos movibles del tacto -¿quizás un órgano de sujeción?-. ¿Qué es, pues, el ver a diferencia del agarrar? Por un lado, en el ver el propio ojo no es visto; por el contrario, uno no sólo ve la mano al agarrar, sino que incluso puede agarrarla con la otra mano. Cuando agarro el vaso siento el vaso y mi mano. Esta es la llamada sensación doble, esto es, el sentir de lo tocado y el sentir de mi mano. En el ver no siento mi ojo en esta forma. El ojo no toca. Por otro lado, hay sensaciones de presión en el ojo si alguien me golpea el ojo. Pero ése es un fenómeno completamente diferente. Pero, ¿acaso no sentimos también el movimiento del ojo cuando, por ejemplo, miramos hacia un lado? Sólo que lo sentido de esta forma no puede ser clasificado como una «sensación doble», ya que no siento la ventana vista cuando dirijo el ojo hacia ella con una mirada de soslayo. La diferencia entre el ver el crucero de la ventana y el ver mi mano se halla, entre otras cosas, en el hecho de que la mano es mi mano, pero el crucero de la ventana está allá. Percibo la mano, porque es mi mano, en su posición también desde «adentro». ¿Es por eso el cuerpo (Leib) algo interno? ¿De qué depende el hecho de que al agarrar veo la mano y al ver algo no veo el ojo?

Al agarrar, la mano está en contacto directo con lo agarrado. Mi ojo no está en este contacto directo con lo visto. Lo visto está en mi campo de visión, es decir, está frente a mis ojos. Yo siempre sólo puedo ver hacia el frente. Pero el vaso agarrado también está frente a mí. Solamente que yo puedo agarrar el vaso -estando sentado a la mesa-, si éste se halla en un alcance limitado. Agarrar sólo es posible cuando algo se halla al alcance de la mano. Por eso, uno llama al tacto un sentido de la proximidad (Nah-Sinn). El ver es un sentido de la lejanía (Fern-Sinn).

¿Puede decir algo el físico sobre el fenómeno del ver? El puede constatar que en el ver entran en juego fuentes de luz, pero cuando alguien ve el crucero de la ventana, nada de eso está ahí.

Se dice que el ojo es «superior» al agarrar. Uno puede controlar el agarrar con el ver, ya que el ver esencialmente está dirigido a la lejanía, como el escuchar. Pero en un cuarto oscuro yo también puedo «controlar» al ver mediante el agarrar. Si el ver alcanza más lejanía que el agarrar, evidentemente el agarrar y el ver tienen que ver con la relación espacial. [GA89AXY:141-143]

A further phenomenon of the body may be mentioned in the following example. If I look at the crossbar over there and pick up the glass in front of me, is the crossbar then “in my eye” in the same way as the glass is “in my Hand”? Certainly Not. But where lies the difference (between these phenomena of distance) we can easily identify without being able to determine it at the same time? Obviously, the hand is an organ of our body and so is the eye. Therefore, we ask the question: How are these organs distinct from each other despite their belonging to the same body? Of course, one could say that the picture of the crossbar is in the retina of my eye. Nevertheless, I cannot see the picture in the retina. The picture in the retina is surely not the crossbar. After all, the question is whether this crossbar is seen through my eye, and not whether the retina’s picture is in my eye as the glass is in my hand. Obviously, there is a difference p. 108 between the way I see “with” my eye and how I grasp “with” my hand. How does the body come into play here? When I grasp the glass, I not only grasp the glass, but can also simultaneously see my hand and the glass. But I cannot see my eye and my seeing, and by no means am I able to grasp them. For in the immediacy of seeing and hearing turned toward the “world,” the eye and ear disappear in a peculiar manner. If someone else wants to ascertain how the eye is functioning when seeing, and how it is anatomically constituted, he must see my eye as I see the crossbar.

(83) We call the eye a sensory organ. And what about the hand? We can hardly call it a sensory organ. But the sense of touch belongs to it. Yet is the hand something more than a moving collection of movable, tactile surfaces — perhaps an organ of grasping? Then, what is seeing in contrast to grasping? For one thing, in seeing, the eye itself is not seen, whereas the hand, when grasping, cannot only be seen, but I can grasp it with my other hand. When I grasp the glass, then I feel the glass and my hand. That is the so-called double sensation (Doppelempfindung), namely, the sensation of what is touched and the sensation of my hand. In the act of seeing, I do not sense my eye in this manner. The eye does not touch. On the other hand, there are sensations of pressure in my eye when someone hits it. Yet that is an entirely different phenomenon. But do we not also feel the motion of the eye when, for instance, we look askance? Nevertheless, what is felt cannot be classified as “double sensation” because I do not feel the window I see when I look askance at it. The difference between the seeing of the crossbar and that of my hand consists, among other things, of the fact that the hand is my hand, whereas the crossbar is over there. I perceive the hand in its position, so to speak, “from the inside” as well because it is my hand. Is the body, therefore, something interior? What is the reason I see my hand in grasping and yet that I do not see my eye in seeing?

In grasping, the hand is in immediate contact with what is grasped. My eye is not in immediate contact with what is seen. What is seen is in my horizon, that is, it is in front of my eyes. I can only see forward, but the glass I grasped is in front of me too. However, sitting at the table, I can grasp the glass only when it is within a definite reach in front of me. Grasping is only possible when something is nearby to be grasped. Therefore, touch is called the sense of proximity. Seeing is a sense of distance.

Is the physicist able to say anything about the phenomenon of seeing? He can state that sources of light come into play, but when one sees the crossbar, nothing concerning these sources is involved.

One says that seeing is “superior” to grasping. One can control grasping through seeing because sight, like hearing, is essentially oriented to distance. Yet in a dark room, I can “control” seeing too, through touching. If seeing has a Wider range than grasping, then grasping and seeing obviously have something to do with our relationship to space. Ein weiteres Leibphänomen sei durch folgendes Beispiel genannt: Wenn Ich das Fensterkreuz dort drüben »ins Auge« fasse und das Glas vor mir auf dem Tisch »in die Hand« nehme, ist dann das Fensterkreuz so in meinem Auge Wie das Glas in meiner Hand? Gewiß Nicht. Aber wo liegt der Unterschied, den Wir mühelos feststellen, ohne ihn doch sogleich bestimmen zu können? Die Hand ist doch ein Organ unseres Leibes und das Auge ist es nicht minder. Wir fragen daher: Wodurch unterscheiden sich diese beiden Organe, die doch beide zum Leib gehören? Zwar läßt sich sagen, auch das Netzhautbild des Fensterkreuzes ist in meinem Auge. Aber ich kann das Netzhautbild doch nicht sehen. Das Netzhautbild ist doch nicht das Fensterkreuz, und die Frage ist doch, ob dieses von mir ins Auge gefaßte Fensterkreuz und nicht ob das Netzhautbild in meinem Auge sei wie das Glas in meiner Hand. Es besteht also Offenbar ein Unterschied zwischen der Weise, wie ich »mit« meinem Auge sehe und wie ich »mit« meiner Hand greife. Wie spielt da der Leib mit? Wenn ich das Glas greife, greife ich nicht nur das Glas, ich kann auch gleichzeitig meine Hand und das Glas sehen. Aber mein Auge und mein Sehen kann ich nicht sehen und schon gar nicht greifen. Beim unmittelbaren der »Welt« zugewendeten Sehen und Hören verschwinden das Auge und das Ohr in eigentümlicher Weise. Wenn ein anderer feststellen will, wie das Auge beim Sehvorgang fungiert, wie es anatomisch beschaffen ist, so muß er mein Auge sehen, wie ich das Fensterkreuz sehe.

Das Auge nennt Man Sinnesorgan. Und die Hand? Wir Werden sie schwerlich als ein Sinnesorgan bezeichnen können. Aber zu ihr gehört der Tastsinn. Indes ist die Hand doch anders als eine bewegliche Ansammlung bewegbarer Tastfelder — vielleicht ein Greiforgan? Was also ist das Sehen im Unterschied zum Greifen? Einmal wird beim Sehen das Auge Selbst nicht gesehen, die Hand dagegen sieht man beim Greifen nicht nur, ich kann sie sogar mit meiner ändern Hand greifen. Wenn ich das Glas greife, so spüre ich das Glas und meine Hand. Das ist die sogenannte Doppelempfindung, nämlich das Empfinden des Getasteten und das Spüren meiner Hand. Beim Sehen spüre ich nicht mein Auge in dieser Weise. Das Auge tastet nicht. Andererseits gibt es Druckempfindungen im Auge, wenn mir einer auf das Auge schlägt. Das ist aber ein ganz anderes Phänomen. Aber spüren wir nicht auch die Bewegung des Auges, wenn wir zum Beispiel nach der Seite blicken? Allein, das so Gespürte kann nicht einer »Doppelempfindung« zugeordnet werden, denn ich spüre das gesehene Fenster nicht, wenn ich das Auge ihm mit einem Seitenblick zuwende. Der Unterschied zwischen dem Sehen des Fensterkreuzes und dem Sehen meiner Hand liegt unter anderem darin, daß die Hand meine Hand ist, das Fensterkreuz aber dort drüben steht. Die Hand vernimmt man, weil es meine Hand ist, in ihrer Lage auch »von innen« her. Ist der Leib nun deswegen etwas Inneres? Womit hängt das zusammen, daß ich beim Greifen die Hand sehe und beim Sehen von etwas das Auge nicht sehe? Beim Greifen ist die Hand in unmittelbarem Kontakt mit dem Ergriffenen. Mein Auge ist nicht in diesem unmittelbaren Kontakt mit dem Gesehenen. Das Gesehene ist in meinem Gesichtskreis, das heißt, es ist vor meinen Augen. Ich kann immer nur nach vorne sehen. Aber das ergriffene Glas steht doch auch vor mir. Allein, greifen kann ich - am Tisch sitzend - das Glas nur, wenn es in einer begrenzten Reich(greif)Weite vor mir steht. Das Greifen ist nur möglich, wenn etwas in Griffnähe ist. Das Tasten nennt man deshalb einen Nah-Sinn. Das Sehen einen Fern-Sinn.

Kann der Physiker etwas sagen über das Phänomen des Sehens? Er kann feststellen, daß dabei Lichtquellen im Spiel sind, aber wenn man das Fensterkreuz sieht, ist von alledem Nichts da.

Das Auge, wird gesagt, sei dem Greifen »übergeordnet«. Man kann das Greifen mit dem Sehen kontrollieren, weil der Blick dem Wesen nach in die Feme gerichtet ist, wie das Hören. Aber ich kann in einem dunklen Zimmer auch das Sehen durch das Greifen »kontrollieren«. Wenn das Sehen weiter reicht als das Greifen, hängen Greifen und Sehen offensichtlich mit dem Raumbezug zusammen. [GA89:107-109]
