Scientist: All the same, it is to me incomprehensible that the essence of the human could ever be found by looking away from the human.

Guide : It is incomprehensible to me as well; and so I seek to attain clarity about the extent to which this is possible or even necessary.

(106) Scientist: To catch sight of the essence of the human without looking at the human?

Guide: Yes. And if thinking is the distinguishing mark of the essence of the human, then what is essential to this essence, namely the essence of thinking, can be first properly caught sight of only insofar as we look away from thinking.

Scholar: Yet thinking, conceived of in the traditional manner as representing, is a willing; even Kant conceives of thinking in this manner when he characterizes it as spontaneity. Thinking is willing, and willing is thinking. (p. 68)

Der Forscher: Gleichviel, mir ist es jedenfalls unerfindlich, daß das Wesen des Menschen je gefunden Werden soll, indem Man vom Menschen wegblickt.

Der Weise: Mir ist das auch unerfindlich; darum suche Ich darüber Klarheit zu erlangen, inwiefern dies möglich oder vielleicht gar nötig ist.

(106) Der Forscher: Das Wesen des Menschen zu erblicken, ohne auf den Menschen hinzusehen?

Der Weise: Ja. Und wenn das denken die Auszeichnung des Wesens des Menschen ist, dann kann das Wesentliche dieses Wesens, eben das Wesen des Denkens, erst recht nur so erblickt werden, daß Wir vom Denken wegsehen.

Der Gelehrte: Das Denken ist jedoch, in der überlieferten Weise als vorstellen begriffen, ein Wollen; auch Kant begreift das Denken so, wenn er es als Spontaneität kennzeichnet. Denken ist Wollen und Wollen ist Denken. (p. 105-106)
