Ο antropomorfismo é a convicção expressa ou inexpressa, assumida ou inconscientemente acolhida de que o ente na totalidade é o que ele é e como ele é por força e de acordo com a representação que transcorre no homem, isto é, no animal dotado de razão, como um transcurso vital entre outros. O ente, e aquilo que assim se denomina e conhece, é algo feito pelo homem. O antropomorfismo se pretende menos como uma doutrina acabada que careceria de uma apresentação fundamentada. Ele assegura muito mais para si imediatamente a concordância como uma “crença” elucidativa antes de todo elemento doutrinário, uma “crença” que é incessantemente suportada e fortalecida pela opinião de que aquilo que o homem seria em essência não poderia se tomar de maneira alguma objeto de uma questão. O antropomorfismo pode se reportar a qualquer momento e para qualquer um ao seu princípio primeiro e último, ao fato de que tudo aquilo que é representado, dito e questionado seria “humano”. E, não obstante, a antropomorfização do ente não é o seu elemento essencial, mas a resistência que se revela nas figuras as mais diversas a toda e qualquer possibilidade de uma transformação essencial do homem. Por isto, ele também gosta de assumir o papel de uma evasiva em relação a toda exigência de um questionamento decisivo.

Anthropomorphism is an explicit or implicit, acknowledged or unknowingly adopted conviction that ‘beings in the whole’ are what they are and how they are by virtue of, and in accordance with, the representation that, among other processes of life, proceeds in Man, the animal endowed with reason. (Thus) what is named and known as a being is a human contrivance. Anthropomorphism pretends to be less than a well-rounded doctrine that requires a grounded presentation. Anthropomorphism promptly assures itself approval as a “belief” which prior to everything teachable is evidently intelligible – a belief which is ceaselessly sustained and strengthened by the opinion that what man is in his ownmost can by no means become the object of a question. At any time and in a manner evident to everyone, anthropomorphism can retreat to its first and Last proposition, according to which everything represented, stated and inquired is indeed merely “human”. And yet, what is essential to anthropomorphism is Not the ‘dis-humanization’ of beings, but rather a variously announced and shaped resistance to any possibility of a fundamental transformation of man. That is why anthropomorphism eagerly assumes the role of a subterfuge vis-à-vis any demand for a deciding questioning.

Der Anthropomorphismus ist die ausgesprochene oder unausgesprochene, die zugestandene oder unerkannt angenommene Überzeugung, daß das Seiende im Ganzen ist, Was es ist und Wie es ist, Kraft und gemäß des Vorstellens, das im Menschen, d. h. im vernunftbegabten Tier, als ein Lebensvorgang unter Anderen abläuft. Das Seiende, und was man so nennt und kennt, ist ein menschliches Gemachte. Der Anthropomorphismus gibt sich weniger als eine fertige Lehre, die einer begründeten Darstellung bedarf. Er sichert sich sogleich die Zustimmung als ein vor Allem Lehrhaften einleuchtender »Glaube«, der unausgesetzt durch die Meinung getragen und bekräftigt wird, daß, was der Mensch im Wesen sei, überhaupt Nicht Gegenstand einer Frage Werden könne. Der Anthropomorphismus kann sich jederzeit und für Jedermann einleuchtend auf seinen ersten und letzten Satz zurückziehen, daß eben doch alles Vorgestellte, Gesagte und Erfragte »menschlich« sei. Und dennoch ist nicht die Vermenschlichung des Seienden Sein Wesentliches, sondern der in den verschiedensten Gestalten sich meldende Widerstand gegen jede Möglichkeit eines Wesenswandels des Menschen. Deshalb übernimmt er auch gern die Rolle einer Ausflucht vor jeder Forderung eines entscheidenden Fragens.
