Somente esse pensar do seer é verdadeiramente in-condicionado, isto é, somente ele não é condicionado e determinado por algo condicionado fora de si e pelo que precisa ser pensado por ele, mas unicamente determinado por aquilo que precisa ser pensado nele, por meio do seer mesmo, que, contudo, não é “o absoluto”. Na medida em que o pensar (no sentido do re-pensar), porém, conserva a essência a partir do seer; na medida em que até mesmo o ser-aí, cujo re-pensar precisa ser uma insistência, só é apropriado em meio ao acontecimento pelo ser, o pensar, isto é, a filosofia, tem sua origem mais própria e mais elevada a partir dela mesma, a partir daquilo que precisa ser pensado nela. Somente agora é que ela se mostra de maneira pura e simplesmente inatacável frente a avaliações e valorações, que calculam tudo de acordo com metas e utilidades, isto é, que abusam correspondentemente tanto da filosofia quanto da arte como uma realização cultural ou mesmo por fim apenas ainda como expressão cultural, colocando-as sob o domínio das suposições, que, ao que parece, dominam a (445) filosofia, mas que, com efeito, permanecem muito abaixo dela, desfigurando a sua essência em meio ao compreensível e impelindo em tal desfiguração para o interior daquilo que ainda é precisamente tolerado e ridicularizado.

Visto a partir de tal rebaixamento, que arrogância não parece estar presente na afirmação da origem incondicionada da filosofia. Todavia, mesmo a partir de um plano mais elevado de avaliação, sim, mesmo a partir de toda e qualquer avaliação experimentada, nós não atingimos nenhuma visão essencial da filosofia, que não precise olhar ao mesmo tempo para o elemento “titânico”. Na metafísica e através de sua história, isso permanece velado e é atenuado por fim, transformando-se em uma mera transgressão de limites epistemologicamente grave. Se, contudo, na transição a partir da metafísica, o pensar precisa se decidir a repensar o seer, então se eleva o perigo da desmedida incontornável em meio ao essencial. O saber em relação a esse perigo também se transforma naturalmente, na medida em que, quase não denominando tal perigo, silencia quanto ao risco essencial. A indicação pertence à ambiguidade da transição, na qual a meditação precisa sempre tocar tangencialmente aquilo que, na execução da transição, se transpõe cada vez mais para o interior do simples fazer. Esse elemento ambíguo retém na filosofia uma tenacidade particular porque a filosofia precisa, enquanto questionar pensante, voltar a si mesma necessariamente para o seu saber; e isso precisamente na medida em que ela possui uma origem incondicionada e quanto mais originariamente ele a possui.

Only this thinking of beyng is truly un-conditioned, i.e., Not conditioned and determined by something conditioned which lies outside of it and outside of what is to be thought by it, but instead determined uniquely by what in it is to be thought, by beyng itself, which, however, is not “the absolute.” Nevertheless, when thinking (in the sense of inventive thinking) receives its essence from beyng, and when even Da-sein (whose one steadfastness must lie in inventive thinking) is appropriated first and only by being, then the thinking, i.e., philosophy, attains its most proper and highest origin from itself, from what in it is to be thought. Only now is such thinking utterly invulnerable to appreciations and valuations which measure according to goals and uses, i.e., which mistreat philosophy (just like art) as a cultural accomplishment or in the end as a mere cultural expression and which place upon it demands that seem to exceed philosophy but in truth remain profoundly beneath it. These demands drag the essence of philosophy down into comprehensibility and thereby displace philosophy into the domain of things merely tolerated and made light of.

Seen from such low ground, how arrogant must it be to claim an unconditioned origin for philosophy. Yet even seen from a higher level of assessment, indeed from any level ever sought, we attain no view of the essence of philosophy which would not by necessity also concomitantly have in view the “titanic.” In metaphysics, and throughout its history, the titanic remains veiled and is ultimately diminished to a mere epistemologically suspect overstepping of limits. Nonetheless, if thinking in the transition from metaphysics must decide in favor of the inventive thinking of beyng, then the danger of the unavoidable presumptuousness is raised to what is essential. To be sure, the knowledge of this danger also changes, in the sense that the essential endangerment goes into hiding as soon as it is named. This reference pertains to the ambiguity of the transition, wherein meditation must ever and again touch on that which, in the carrying out of the transition, at once and increasingly transposes itself into simple action. This ambiguity maintains an especially tenacious grip in philosophy because philosophy, as thoughtful questioning and precisely insofar as it is of an unconditioned origin, and indeed the more originally it is so, must by necessity take itself into its own knowledge.

Erst dieses denken des Seyns ist wahrhaft un-bedingt, d. h. Nicht bedingt und bestimmt durch ein Bedingtes außerhalb seiner und des von ihm zu Denkenden, sondern einzig bestimmt durch das in ihm zu Denkende, durch das Seyn Selbst, das gleichwohl nicht »das Absolute« ist. Aber indem das Denken (im Sinne des Er-denkens) aus dem Seyn das Wesen erhält, indem sogar das Da-Sein, dessen eine Inständigkeit das erdenken sein muß, erst und nur durch das Sein er-eignet wird, hat das Denken, d. h. die Philosophie, ihren eigensten und höchsten Ursprung aus ihr selbst, aus dem in ihr zu Denkenden erreicht. Erst Jetzt ist sie schlechthin unangreifbar durch Schätzungen und Wertungen, die nach Zielen und Nutzen rechnen, d. h. die Philosophie entsprechend Wie die Kunst als eine Kulturleistung oder schließlich nur noch als Kulturausdruck mißhandeln und unter Zumutungen stellen, die dem Schein nach die Philosophie überragen, in Wahrheit aber tief unter ihr bleiben, ihr Wesen ins Verständliche hinabzerren und in solcher Verzerrung in das gerade noch Geduldete und Belächelte verschieben.

Welche Anmaßung muß es, aus solcher Niederung gesehen, bleiben, der Philosophie ihren unbedingten Ursprung zu behaupten. Doch selbst aus einer höheren Ebene der Schätzung, ja aus jeder nur irgend versuchten erreichen Wir keinen Anderen Wesensblick in die Philosophie, der nicht das »Titanische« mit erblicken müßte. In der Metaphysik und durch ihre Geschichte hindurch bleibt es verschleiert und schließlich zu einer bloßen erkenntnistheoretisch bedenklichen Grenzüberschreitung abgeschwächt. Wenn jedoch im Übergang aus der Metaphysik das Denken zum Erdenken des Seyns sich entscheiden muß, dann steigert sich die Gefahr der unumgänglichen Vermessenheit ins Wesentliche. Das Wissen von dieser Gefahr (463) wandelt sich freilich auch, indem es, kaum jene nennend, die wesentliche Gefährdung verschweigt. Der Hinweis gehört in die Zweideutigkeit des Überganges, in dem die Besinnung immer noch das streifen muß, Was im Vollzug des Überganges sich alsbald mehr und mehr in das einfache Tun verlegt. Dieses Zweideutige behält in der Philosophie eine besondere Hartnäckigkeit, weil sie als denkendes Fragen sich selbst notwendig, gerade sofern sie imbedingten Ursprungs ist und je ursprünglicher sie das ist, in ihr Wissen rücken muß.
