Que implica o facto de o ser-aí humano se ter proporcionado um relógio com anterioridade a todos os relógios de bolso e de sol? Será que eu tenho à minha disposição o ser do tempo e que, no agora, me viso conjuntamente a mim? Serei eu mesmo o agora e o meu ser-aí o tempo? Ou será que, afinal, é o tempo, ele mesmo, que proporciona, em nós, o relógio? Santo Agostinho, no livro XI das Confissões, levou a questão até ao ponto de (perguntar) se o espírito não será ele mesmo o tempo. E aí parada deixou Santo Agostinho a questão. “In te, anime meus, Tempora metior; noli mihi obstrepere: quod est; noli tibi obstrepere turbis affectionum tuarum. In te, inquam, tempora metior; affectionem quam res praetereuntes in te faciunt, et cum illae praeterierint manet, ipsam metior praesentem, non eas quae praeterierunt ut fieret: ipsam metior, cum tempora metior.” Parafraseando: “Em ti, espírito meu, meço ο tempo; a ti meço, ao medir o tempo. Não me venhas com a pergunta: como é isso? Não me leves a desviar-me de ti com uma falsa questão. Não te interponhas no meu caminho até ti, enredando o que pode dizer-te respeito. Em ti, sempre o repito, meço o tempo; as coisas que, passageiramente, vêm ao (teu) encontro afectam-te de maneira permanente, enquanto elas desaparecem. É a afectividade que eu meço no ser-aí actual, e não as coisas, que sendo passageiras, lhe deram origem. O que meço – repito -, ao medir o tempo, é o meu mesmo sentir-me afectado.” (p. 31,33)

¿Qué hay (welche Bewandtnis hat es) con que la existencia humana se haya procurado un reloj ya antes de todos los relojes de bolsillo y de sol? ¿Dispongo del ser del tiempo y me refiero también a mí mismo en el ahora? ¿Soy yo mismo el ahora y mi existencia el tiempo? ¿O es, por fin, el tiempo mismo el que en nosotros se procura el reloj6? En el Libro XI de sus Confesiones, Agustín llevó la cuestión hasta el punto de si el espíritu mismo es el tiempo. Y Agustín dejó detenida la cuestión en este punto. "In te, anime meus, tempora metior; noli mihi obstrepere: quod est; noli tibi obstrepere turbis affectionum tuarum. In te, inquam, tempora metior; affectionem quam res praeteruntes in te faciunt, et cum illae praeterierint manet, ipsam metior praesentem, non ea quae praeteriunt ut fieret: ipsam metior, cum tempora metior." Parafraseando: "En ti, mi espíritu, mido los tiempos; te mido a ti, al medir el tiempo. No te me atravieses con la pregunta: ¿cómo es eso? No me desvíes a mirar lejos de ti por una falsa pregunta. No te salgas tú mismo al camino con la confusión de qué pueda concernirte a ti mismo. En ti, vuelvo a decir una y otra vez, mido el tiempo; las cosas pasajeras que salen al encuentro te traen a un hallarte-dispuesto (Befindlichketi) que permanece, mientras aquellas desaparecen. La disposición la mido en la existencia presente, no las cosas que pasan. Mi propio encontrarme-a-mí-mismo, repito, lo mido cuando mido el tiempo." (p. 8)

What is involved in the fact that human existence has already procured a clock prior to all pocket-watches and sundials? Do I dispose over the Being of time, and do I also mean myself in the now? Am I myself the now and my existence time? Or is it ultimately time itself that procures for itself the clock in us? Augustine, in the Eleventh Book of his Confessions, pursued the question so far as to ask whether spirit itself is time. And Augustine left the question standing at this point. 'In te, anime meus, tempora metior; noli mihi obstrepere: quod est; noli tibi obstrepere turbis affectionum tuarum. In te, inquam, tempora metior; affectionem quam res praetereuntes in te faciunt, et cum illae praeterierint manet, ipsam metior praesentem, non ea quae praeterierunt ut fieret: ipsam metior, cum tempora metior.' To paraphrase: 'In you, my spirit, I measure times; you I measure, as I measure time. Do Not cross my path with the question: How is that? Do not mislead me into looking away from you through a false question. Do not obstruct your own path with the confusion of what may concern you yourself. In you, I say repeatedly, I measure time; the transitory things encountered bring you into a disposition which remains, while those things disappear. The disposition I measure in present existence, not the things that pass by in order that this disposition first arise. My very finding myself disposed, I repeat, is what I measure when I measure time.' (p. 5E, 6E)

Welche Bewandtnis hat es damit, daß menschliches Dasein sich eine Uhr angeschafft hat schon vor allen Taschen- und Sonnenuhren? Verfüge Ich über das Sein der Zeit und meine ich im Jetzt mich mit? Bin ich Selbst das Jetzt und mein Dasein die Zeit? Oder ist es am Ende die Zeit selbst, die sich in uns die Uhr anschafft? Augustinus hat im XI. Buch seiner »Confessiones« die Frage bis hierher getrieben, ob der Geist selbst die Zeit sei. Komme mir Nicht mit der Frage in die Quere: Wie denn das? Verleite mich nicht dazu, von dir wegzusehen durch eine Falsche Frage. Komme dir selbst nicht in den Weg durch die Verwirrung dessen, Was dich selbst angehen mag. In dir, Sage ich immer wieder, messe ich die Zeit; die vorübergehend begegnenden Dinge bringen dich in eine Befindlichkeit, die bleibt, während jene verschwinden. Die Befindlichkeit messe ich in dem Gegenwärtigen Dasein, nicht die Dinge, welche vorübergehen, daß sie erst entstünde. Mein Mich-befinden selbst, ich wiederhole es, messe ich, wenn ich die Zeit messe.« (p. 111)
