El mero querer ver, la curiosidad desnuda, es el sentido dominante, y precisamente tan sólo cuando la experiencia se ejecuta y consuma con carga emocional: miedo, terror, espanto. Las formas concretas que asume esta actitud concreta en su relación con los objetos son muy diversas (cine).

Hinc etiam, si quid eodem perversae scientiae fine per artes magicas quaeritur  (De aquí depende igualmente el que, so capa de un conocimiento científico, en realidad perverso, se acuda a las artes mágicas). En esta curiosidad (en un determinado alzaprimar una posibilidad de experiencia y en una determinada ejecución de la misma) hunde también sus raíces la caída y la decadencia, así como igualmente la dedicación a la magia, a la mística y a la teosofía. Finis delectationis es perversa scientia , que desde un principio ha apartado de sí cualquier crítica del sentido de su propia realización.

Hinc etiam in ipsa religione Deus tentatur, cum signa et prodigia flagitantur, non ad aliquam salutem, sed ad solam experientiam desiderata  . (Dios tiene que soportar el verse convertido en un factor en el experimentar humano. Debe responder a una curiosidad seudoprofética escrutadora y presuntuosa, esto es, a un curioso mirar en torno centrado en él, un mirar que no se ajusta a su sentido del objeto, que es por tanto mero des-ajuste.)

¿Por qué es comprendida y caracterizada esta concupiscentia como concupiscentia oculorum? Oculi autem sunt ad cognoscendum in sensibus principes, (.. .) Ad oculos enim proprie videre pertinet  . (En la medida en que la sensorialidad tiene el sentido de rendimiento del obtener conocimiento, tiene que serle reconocido al ver, en sus diferentes modos, el primer lugar.) Utimur autem hoc verbo etiam in caeteris sensibus, cum eos ad cognoscendum intendimus  (Pero empleamos también esta palabra para referimos al conocimiento de algo por medio de los demás sentidos), cuando damos a la sensorialidad la plena dirección de sentido y función del conocer, dirección que no sin más y siempre y primariamente tiene ya como tal.

Cum aliquid cognitionis explorant  (Cuando tratan de conocer algo), cuando los sentidos investigan y tienen que hacer accesible algo que como tal corresponde al orden del conocimiento, que es objeto del conocimiento, entonces caracterizan su sentido relacional —y de acuerdo con el sentido pleno— como ver. Porque caeteri sensus (videndi officium) sibi (...) usurpant, in quo (officio vivendi) primatum oculi tenent  . [¡¿Acaso no tienen realmente este sentido de rendimiento?!] (Ver quiere decir poner delante un objeto como objeto.)

Cuando al obtener conocimiento queremos determinar algo, cuando queremos remitir algo como presente —como estando (81) ahí y siendo así— a los ámbitos de lo que resulta accesible por medio de los sentidos en el modo del sentido de su relación (modo que no es el de experiri (experimentar)): Neque enim dicimus, Audi quid rutilet; aut, Olfac quam niteat; aut, Gusta quam splendeat; aut, Palpa quam fulgeat  . (Aquí las determinaciones vienen referidas a la lux, porque lux es lo visto, lo objetual como mera objetualidad.)

Videri enim dicuntur haec omnia  , es decir, que lo que resulta accesible en el ver (no diferenciado de modo explícito y concreto) no es designado nunca en relación con el modo relacional de captación mediante el que se obtiene conocimiento de otro modo que como "ver". los otros sentidos relaciónales no son convertidos en operativos para el rendimiento del acceso, pero, inversamente, el ver sí tiene el sentido del hacer (objetualmente) accesible en el sentido diferenciado del mero obtener conocimiento. Decimos, pues, por el contrario: Vide quid sonet; vide quid oleat; vide quid sapiat; vide quam durum sit  (Mira cómo suena; mira cómo huele; mira cómo sabe; mira lo duro que es). (Estamos aquí ante una variedad de lo no genuinamente visible, es decir, de lo objetual como tal, que sólo pasa a serlo en el mirar; en el "mira" experimenta, en la co-ejecución, la modificación relacional, o sea en el orden del contenido.) De acuerdo con su propio sentido el "mira" es un mero dirigir la vista a, un contemplar, un allegarse, un dato en el orden del conocimiento, un hacer algo expresamente, que algo se convierta, como materia del mero hacerse con conocimiento, en objeto. (Generalis experientia sensuum  (Lo que experimento de modo general a través de los sentidos), el experimentar que toma y da conocimiento en la sensorialidad en general: "ver".)

El "ver" tiene la primacía en el officio videndi (servicio del ver) y, respectivamente, en el officio cognoscendi . Así, pues, cuando el experimentar fáctico concreto lo es de acuerdo con su sentido y tiende a una obtención diferenciada de conocimiento (que puede promover, a su vez, objetivos distintos), la delectatio videndi (el deleite del ver) está viva, una delectatio que puede ser una concupiscentia. ¿En qué medida? El sentido relacional como tal es tenaz, y tenaz y primario es el sentido pleno del videre, determina todas las experiencias fácticas, hasta las más decisivas y últimas. (El tenaz sentido relacional se aparta de la interpretación inmanente egocéntrica de la ejecución de su relevancia existencial. No corta y se desentiende sólo por eso, sino que incluso dirige toda vida. Pero ¿de dónde y hacia dónde la tenacidad en Agustín?

Esta forma tentationis es multiplicius periculosa (forma de tentación peligrosa de múltiples formas). Quando audeo dicere nulla re tali me intentum fieri ad spectandum, et vana cura capiendum? (¿Cuándo podré decir que ninguna de ellas me llama la atención para que me fije en ella y caiga en alguna vana preocupación?) (En la curiosidad, en esta dirección relacional, todo es principalmente accesible; sin inhibiciones.)

Cum enim hujuscemodi rerum conceptaculum fit cor nostrum, et portat copiosae vanitatis catervas  (Cuando mi corazón da cabida a cosas semejantes y lleva en sí tal tropel de frívolas banalidades): cavernas escondidas para recibir y albergar dentro de sí banalidades frívolas ajenas por completo a Dios y alejadas de Él. . En la superbia y en el egoísmo ]

(¡Un camino principal y una oportunidad "existencial” de la dispersión! "En la vida", trato del hombre con Dios: ¡cuánto (no) ocurrirá aquí! - interjecciones de la curiosidad imponen las experiencias ficticias.)

The dominant sense is the mere desire to see, the naked curiosity, in particular if the experience is enacted with emotional emphasis: fear, terror, horror. The expressions of this basic disposition toward the objects are multiple (cinema).

“Hinc etiam, si quid eodem perversae scientiae fine per artes magicas quaeritur” (Hence also, if with the same end of perverted science, the magical arts are used to inquire). In this curiosity (in a certain emphasis upon one possibility of experience, and in a certain enactment of it) lies also the falling into, and the dealing with, magic, mysticism, and theosophy. Finis delectationis (the end of delight) is perversa scientia (a perverse science) which has already, from the beginning, given up any criticism about its own sense of enactment.

“Hinc etiam in ipsa religione Deus tentatur, cum signa et prodigia flagitantur, non ad aliquam salutem, sed ad solam experientiam desiderata” (Hence also in Religion itself God is tempted by demands for signs and wonders, Not desired for any saving end, but only for the sake of experience). (God has to endure becoming a factor in human experiments. He has to respond to an inquisitive, pompous, and pseudo-prophetic curiosity, that is, a curious looking-about-oneself in regard to Him, which does not submit (fügt) to His sense of objecthood, that is, which is non-sense (Un-fug).)

Why is this concupiscentia understood and designated as concupiscentia oculorum? “Oculi autem sunt ad cognoscendum in sensibus principes, (.. . ) Ad oculos enim proprie videre pertinet” (For knowing the eyes are the principal senses,. . . For to see pertains properly to the eyes).” (Insofar as sensuousness involves a cognizing sense of achievement, seeing has to be accorded first place among its different ways.) “Utimur autem hoc verbo etiam in caeteris sensibus, cum eos ad cognoscendum intendimus” (Yet we also apply this word to other senses, when we use them toward knowing), when we give to sensuousness the full sense-direction and sense-function of (168) [GA60:225-226] knowledge, which it does not have without further ado, or always and primarily as such.

“Cum aliquid cognitionis explorant” (When they explore other knowledge), when the senses are supposed to explore and render accessible something on the order of knowledge, an object of knowledge as such, then we call its relational sense—and accordingly the full sense—a seeing. For caeteri sensus (videndi officium) sibi (... ) usurpant (usurp, accord themselves), in quo (officio videndi) primatum oculi tenent ., (To see means to first give an object as object.)

If we want to ascertain something in the manner of cognition, if we want to refer to something as present-at-Hand—as existing and in the manner of its existing—in the regions of what becomes accessible through the senses in their manner of the relational sense (which is no manner of experiri (experiencing)): “Neque enim dicimus, Audi quid rutilet; aut, Olfac quam niteat; aut, Gusta quam splendeat; aut, Palpa quam fulgeat” (For we do not say, hear how red it is; or smell how bright that is; or taste how that shines; or feel how that gleams). (Here the determinations are referred to lux (light), for “lux” is that which is seen, what is objective qua what is merely objective.)

“Videri enim dicuntur haec omnia” (For all these are said to be seen), that is, what becomes accessible in seeing (in a seeing not concretely emphasized), is never, in regard to the cognizing, relational manner of grasping, designated other than as seeing. The other relational senses are not function-alized for the achievement of access, but, inversely, seeing has the meaning of rendering accessible (what is objective), in the emphasized sense of the mere taking-cognizance-of. By contrast, we say: “Vide quid sonet; vide quid oleat; vide quid sapiat; vide quam durum sit” (See what it sounds like, see what it smells like, see what it tastes like, see how hard it is). (Here we are dealing with a manifold of what is not really visible, that is, of what is objective as such (des Gegenstandlichen als solchen), but it becomes objective only in the seeing; it receives its relational or content modification in the “seeing,” in the co-enactment.) According to its meaning, the “seeing” is: only looking at, considering, bringing to one’s cognizing givenness, letting something become an object for oneself as the object of mere taking-cognizance-of. (“Generalis experientia sensuum” (the general experience of the senses), the cognizing experience in sensuousness in general: “seeing.”)

“Seeing” has the primacy in officio videndi or cognoscendi (the faculty of [GA60:226-227] (169) seeing or knowing). Thus, wherever the concrete factical experiencing is according to its sense, and where it intends an emphasized taking-cognizance-of (which in turn has different purposes), the delectatio videndi (delight of seeing), which can be a concupiscentia, is alive. To what extent? The relational sense as such is self-willed, and the full sense of videre is then self-willed and primary; it determines all factical experiences, including the decisive and the final ones. (The self-willed relational sense goes beyond the immanent, selfly enactmental interpretation (selbstliche Vollzugsinterpretation) of its existential relevance. The relational sense does not only not care about it, but itself directs all life.—Now, with Augustine the self-willing toward what and away from what?)

This forma tentationis (form of temptation) contains multiplicius periculosa (multiple dangers). “Quando audeo dicere nulla re tali me intentum fieri ad spectandum, et vana cura capiendum?” (When dare I say that nothing of the sort provokes me to go and look at it, and that I am not caught by a vain concern?) (In curiosity, in this relational direction, everything is in principle accessible, without restraint.)

“Cum enim hujuscemodi rerum conceptaculum fit cor nostrum, et portat copiosae vanitatis catervas” (When our heart becomes the receptacle of such things, and carries a plethora of vanities): caves, hideaways for the reception and carrying-within-oneself of godless vanities. (One principal way, and one “existing” opportunity, of dispersion! “In life,” intercourse of the human being with God: what does (not) happen here!—Interjections of curiosity are interspersed throughout factical experience.)
