Para a compreensão da doutrina do eterno retorno, tão importante quanto o fato de Nietzsche comunicá-la pela primeira vez na conclusão de A gaia ciência é o modo como ele caracteriza aí, de antemão, o pensamento do eterno retorno. O aforismo em questão traz o título: “O peso mais pesado”. O pensamento como peso! O que nos representamos ao ouvirmos a expressão “peso”? O peso impede o movimento vacilante, traz consigo uma quietude e firmeza, atrai todas as forças para si, as reúne e dá determinação. Um peso puxa ao mesmo tempo para baixo e nos compele, com isso, constantemente para nos mantermos eretos. No entanto, ele também se mostra como o risco de escorregar para baixo e permanecer embaixo. Dessa feita, um peso é também um obstáculo que exige ser constantemente tomado e superado. Todavia, um peso não cria novas forças. Ao contrário, ele transforma a direção de seu movimento e cria, assim, novas leis de movimento para a força disponível.

Ora, mas como é que um pensamento pode ser um peso, isto é, como é que ele pode se mostrar como determinante sob os modos citados da fixação, da reunião, da atração, da obstaculização e da alteração de direção? E o que ele deve determinar? A quem o peso deve ser anexado e em quem ele deve ser inculcado? Quem deve levá-lo para cima consigo, a fim de que não permaneça embaixo? Nietzsche o diz quase no fim do aforismo: o pensamento residiria como a questão “tu queres isso uma vez mais e ainda incontáveis vezes?” por toda parte e o tempo todo sobre o nosso agir. O que se tem em vista com o termo “agir” não é aqui meramente a atividade prática, nem tampouco o agir ético, mas muito mais o todo das relações do homem com o ente e consigo mesmo. O pensamento do eterno retorno deve ser um “peso”, isto é, deve ser determinante para o encontrar-se conjuntamente em meio ao ente na totalidade.

Mas agora podemos perguntar pela primeira vez efetivamente: como um pensamento pode ter uma força determinante? “Pensamentos”! Algo tão fugaz deve ser um peso? Para o homem, o determinante não é inversamente o que está à sua volta, as circunstâncias, sua “alimentação”? Feuerbach não tem razão com a sua famosa frase: o homem é o que “come”? E ao lado da alimentação não se deveria colocar o lugar, ou, de acordo com as doutrinas outrora contemporâneas da sociologia inglesa e francesa, o milieu, a arte e a sociedade? De maneira alguma, porém, pensamentos! Nietzsche retrucaria a isso: justamente os pensamentos, pois estes determinam o homem ainda mais, eles o determinam pela primeira vez para essa alimentação, para esse lugar, para esse ar e essa sociedade; no “pensamento” se decide se o homem justamente assume e mantém essas circunstâncias ou escolhe de outra maneira, se interpreta as circunstâncias escolhidas desse modo ou de outro, se faz frente a elas desse modo ou de outro. O fato de essa decisão ser tomada frequentemente em ausência de pensamento não fala contra o domínio do pensamento, mas a favor dele. O meio por si não esclarece nada; não há um meio em si. Nietzsche diz quanto a isso (A vontade de poder, n. 70, 1885-1886):

“Contra a doutrina da influência do meio e das causas exteriores: a força interna é infinitamente superior.”

A mais intrínseca das “forças internas” são os pensamentos. E se esse pensamento do eterno retorno do mesmo não pensa absolutamente nada arbitrário, não isso ou aquilo, mas muito mais o ente na totalidade tal como ele é; se esse pensamento é realmente pensado, isto é, se ele nos coloca como questão no cerne do ente e com isso, ao mesmo tempo, nos impele para fora; se esse pensamento do eterno retorno é “o pensamento dos pensamentos” (XII, 64), tal como Nietzsche o denominou certa vez, então não deve poder ser apenas um “peso” para todo e qualquer homem, não apenas um peso entre outros, mas “o peso mais pesado"'?

Ora, mas por que isso? O que é o homem? Ele é o ser que precisa de um peso, que sempre anexa e precisa anexar um peso a si? Que perigosa necessidade está aqui em jogo? Um peso também pode puxar para baixo, rebaixar o homem, e, quando ele está embaixo, se tornar supérfluo como peso, de modo que o homem permanece então repentinamente sem peso e não pode mais avaliar o que é seu em cima, (191) não pode mais notar que ele está embaixo, mas, ao invés disso, se toma pelo ponto médio e pela medida, enquanto tudo isso não perfaz senão a sua mediocridade. Aussi important que le fait que Nietzsche communique pour la première fois la doctrine du Retour à la fin du « Gai Savoir », est pour la comprendre, la manière dont il la caractérise ainsi à l’avance en tant que pensée. L’aphorisme en question (n° 341) s’intitule : le poids le plus lourd. La pensée, un poids! Qu’imaginons-nous par le mot poids? Un poids empêche le vacillement, apporte du repos et de la fermeté, tire à soi toutes les forces, les rassemble et leur donne de l’assurance. Un poids tire vers le bas et constitue, de ce fait, la contrainte constante de se maintenir vers le haut, en même temps que le danger de glisser vers le bas et d’y demeurer. Un poids est de la sorte un obstacle qui exige qu’on le saisisse et le franchisse constamment.

Un poids ne procure cependant pas de forces nouvelles alors qu’il change la direction de leur mouvement, donnant ainsi de nouvelles lois au mouvement de la force disponible.

Mais comment une pensée pourrait-elle être un poids, c’est-à-dire exercer les fonctions de la pesanteur, devenir déterminante selon les modes mentionnés de l’affermissement, de la concentration, de l’attraction, de l’obstacle et du changement de direction? Et que devrait-elle déterminer? A qui le poids doit-il être attaché et intégré, et qui doit l’emporter vers la hauteur, afin qu’il ne demeure en bas? Nietzsche le dit vers la fin de l’aphorisme : la pensée sous la forme de la question : Voudrais-tu ceci encore une fois et d’innombrables fois? pèserait, partout et à tout instant, sur notre agir. Par agir, ce n’est pas seulement l’activité pratique qui est ici entendue, non plus que l’action morale, mais bien plutôt l’ensemble des rapports de l’homme à l’étant, et à lui-même. Ce serait donc pour maintenir l’homme au cœur de l’étant que la pensée de l’Éternel Retour, exerçant la pesanteur d’un poids, serait déterminante.

A plus forte raison, demanderons-nous : Comment une pensée peut-elle jamais avoir une force déterminante? Une pensée! quelque chose d’aussi fugitif être un centre de gravité? N’est-ce pas précisément le contraire qui est déterminant pour l’homme, soit ce qui l’entoure, les circonstances, sa « nourriture » selon le mot de Feuerbach : Der Mensch ist Was er « isst »? (L’homme est ce qu’il mange)? Et en plus de la nourriture, n’est-ce pas (217) le lieu, soit, selon la Sociologie anglaise et française, contemporaine de Nietzsche, le « milieu », l’atmosphère et la société? En aucun cas les « pensées »! A quoi Nietzsche objectera : Justement ce sont les « pensées », car celles-là déterminent l’homme davantage, et le déterminent au préalable à telle nourriture, à tel lieu, à telle atmosphère, à telle société. Dans la pensée, en effet, se décide si l’homme assume justement ces circonstances-là et les conserve, ou en choisira d’autres, s’il interprète les circonstances choisies de telle manière ou d’une autre, s’il en vient à bout de telle façon ou d’une autre. Que pareille décision se produise souvent dans l’absence de pensée, n’infirme point le règne de la pensée, mais le confirme. Le milieu en soi n’explique rien; il n’est point de milieu en soi. Nietzsche dit à cet égard :

« Contre la doctrine de l’influence du milieu et des causes extérieures : la force intérieure leur est infiniment supérieure » (La Volonté de puissance, n° 70; 1885-1886.)

Le plus intime de la force intérieure, ce sont les pensées. Et dès lors que cette pensée de l’Éternel Retour du Même ne pense absolument rien de fortuit, ni ceci ni cela, mais bien plutôt l’étant dans sa totalité, tel qu’il est; que cette pensée se pense réellement, c’est-à-dire en tant que question, nous pose au Sein de l’étant et du même coup nous expose au dehors; que cette pensée de l’Éternel Retour est, comme Nietzsche le dit ailleurs, la « pensée des pensées » (XII, 64) – comment ne serait-elle pas alors un poids pour tout homme, comment ne pèserait-elle pas sur chacun de nous, non pas simplement comme un poids parmi d’autres, mais comme le poids le plus lourd?

Mais pourquoi ce poids-là précisément? Qu’est-ce que l’homme? Est-il l’être qui ne pourrait jamais faire autrement que de s’attacher un poids à lui-même? Quelle est donc cette dangereuse nécessité? Un poids peut également tirer vers le bas, peut avilir l’homme, l’abaisser et, une fois l’homme en bas, devenir superflu de telle sorte que l’homme demeure du coup sans poids et ne saurait plus alors estimer ce qui était le « haut » eu égard à lui-même, ni éprouver qu’il est en bas, se tenir, tel quel, pour le milieu et la mesure de toutes choses, alors que tout ceci en constitue que sa propre médiocrité. Two matters are of equal importance for our understanding of this doctrine: first, the fact that Nietzsche first communicates it at the conclusion of The Gay Science; and second, the way in which Nietzsche at the outset characterizes the thought of return. The appropriate passage is number 341, entitled “The greatest burden.” The thought as burden! What do we think of when we say the word “burden” (Schwergewicht)? A burden hinders vacillation, renders calm and steadfast, draws all forces to itself, gathers them and gives them Definition. A burden also exerts a downward pull, compelling us constantly to hold ourselves erect; but it also embodies the danger that we will fall down, and stay down. In this way the burden is an obstacle that demands constant “hurdling,” constant surmounting. However, a burden creates no new forces, while it does alter the direction of their motion, thus creating for whatever force is available new laws of motion.

Yet how can a “thought” be a burden, that is to say, something that becomes determinative as rendering steadfast, gathering, drawing and restraining, or as altering directions? And what is this thought to determine? Who is to be afflicted with this burden, in whom is it to be installed? Who is to bear it to great heights, in order Not to remain below? Nietzsche provides the answer toward the close of the passage. As the question “Do you will this once more and countless times more?” the thought would everywhere and at all times weigh upon our actions. By “actions” Nietzsche does not mean merely practical activities or ethical deeds; rather, he means the totality of Man’s relations to beings and to himself. The thought of eternal return is to be a burden – that is, is to be determinative – for our envelopment within beings as a whole.

Yet now we would really have to insist: How can a thought possess determinative force? “Thoughts”! Such fleeting things are to be a center of gravity? On the contrary, is not what is determinative for man precisely what crowds around him, his circumstances – for instance, his foodstuffs? Recall Feuerbach’s famous dictum, “Man is what he eats.” And, along with nourishment, locale? Recall the teachings of the classical English and French sociologists concerning the milieu – meaning both the general atmosphere and the social order. But by no stretch of the Imagination “thoughts”! To all this Nietzsche would reply that it is precisely a matter of thoughts, since these determine man even more than those other things; they alone determine him with respect to these very foodstuffs, to this locality, to this atmosphere and social order. In “thought” the decision is made as to whether men and women will adopt and maintain precisely these circumstances or whether they will elect others; whether they will interpret the chosen circumstances in this way or that way; whether under this or that set of conditions they can cope with such circumstances. That such (23) decisions often collapse into thoughtlessness does not testify against the dominion of thought but for it. Taken by itself, the milieu explains nothing; there is no milieu in itself. In this regard Nietzsche writes (WM, 70; from the years 1885-86): “Against the doctrine of influence from the milieu and from extrinsic causes: the inner force is infinitely superior.” The most intrinsic of “inner forces” are thoughts. And if the thought of eternal return of the same thinks some by no means fortuitous thought, by no means either this, that, or the other; if it instead thinks being as whole, as it is; and if this thought is actually thought, that is, if as a question it installs us amid beings and thereby places us at a distance from them; if this thought of eternal return is “the thought of thoughts,” as Nietzsche at one point calls it (XII, 64); then should it not be perfectly capable of being a “burden” to every human being, and not simply one burden among others but “the greatest burden’”?

Yet why the burden? What is man? Is he the creature that needs a burden, the creature that always afflicts himself with burdens, and has to do so? What sort of treacherous necessity is here in play? A burden can also drag down, can humiliate a man. And when he is all the way down the burden becomes superfluous, so that now, suddenly bereft of all burdens, he can no longer descry what he once was in his ascendancy, no longer notice that he is now as low as he can go. Instead, he takes himself to be the median and the measure, whereas these are but expressions of his mediocrity. [GA6T1EN:22-23]

Ebenso wichtig Wie die Tatsache, daß Nietzsche die Wiederkunftslehre erstmals am Schluß der »Fröhlichen Wissenschaft« mitteilt, ist für das Verständnis dieser Lehre die Art, wie Nietzsche dabei den Wiederkunftsgedanken im voraus kennzeichnet. Das betreffende Stück (n. 541) ist überschrieben: »Das größte Schwergewicht.« Der Gedanke als Schwergewicht! Was stellen Wir uns bei dem Wort »Schwergewicht« vor? Ein Schwergewicht verhindert das Schwanken, bringt eine Ruhe und Festigkeit, zieht alle Kräfte auf sich zusammen, sammelt sie und gibt ihnen Bestimmtheit. Ein Schwergewicht zieht zugleich nach unten und ist daher der Ständige Zwang, sich oben zu halten, es ist aber auch die Gefahr, nach unten zu gleiten und unten zu bleiben. Ein Schwergewicht ist so ein Hindernis, das verlangt, ständig genommen und übersprungen zu Werden. Ein Schwergewicht schafft jedoch Nicht Neue Kräfte, indes verwandelt es ihre Bewegungs-Richtung und schafft so neue Bewegungsgesetze der verfügbaren Kraft.

Doch wie kann ein »Gedanke« ein Schwergewicht sein, d. h. in den genannten Weisen der Festigung, Sammlung, des Ziehens und Hemmens und der Richtungsänderung bestimmend werden? Und was soll er bestimmen? Wem soll das Schwergewicht angehängt und eingebaut werden, und Wer soll es mit in die Höhe nehmen, damit er nicht untenbleibe? Nietzsche sagt es gegen Schluß des Stückes*, der Gedanke würde als Frage »willst du dies noch einmal und noch unzählige Male?« überall und jederzeit auf unserm Handeln liegen. Mit »Handeln« ist Hier nicht bloß die praktische Tätigkeit und auch nicht das sittliche Handeln gemeint, vielmehr das Ganze der Bezüge des Menschen zum Seienden und zu sich Selbst. Für das Mitteninnestehen im Seienden im Ganzen soll der Gedanke der ewigen Wiederkunft ein »Schwergewicht«, d. h. bestimmend sein.

Aber Jetzt fragen wir erst recht: Wie kann ein Gedanke bestimmende Kraft Haben? »Gedanken«! Dergestalt Flüchtiges soll ein Schwerpunkt sein? Ist für den Menschen nicht umgekehrt gerade das bestimmend, was um ihn herumsteht, die Umstände, seine »Nahrung«, nach jenem Wort Feuerbachs: Der Mensch ist, was er »ißt«? Und neben der Nahrung der Ort, nach den damals zeitgenössischen Lehren der englischen und französischen Soziologie das »Milieu«, die Luft und die Gesellschaft? Keineswegs aber »Gedanken«! Nietzsche würde dem entgegnen: Gerade die »Gedanken«, denn diese bestimmen den Menschen noch mehr, sie bestimmen ihn erst zu dieser Nahrung, zu diesem Ort, zu dieser Luft und Gesellschaft; in dem »Gedanken« fällt die Entscheidung, ob der Mensch gerade diese Umstände übernimmt und beibehält oder Andere wählt, ob er die gewählten Umstände so oder anders deutet, so oder anders mit ihnen fertig wird. Daß diese Entscheidung oft in der Gedankenlosigkeit fällt, spricht nicht gegen die Herrschaft des Gedankens sondern dafür. Das Milieu für sich erklärt Nichts; ein Milieu an sich gibt es nicht. Nietzsche sagt dazu (»Der Wille zur Macht«, n. 70; 1885/86):

»Gegen die Lehre vom Einfluß des Milieu’s und der äußeren Ursachen: die innere Kraft ist unendlich überlegen.« Das Innerste der »Inneren Kraft« sind die Gedanken. Und wenn nun dieser Gedanke der ewigen Wiederkunft des Gleichen vollends nichts Beliebiges, nicht dieses und jenes denkt, vielmehr das Seiende im Ganzen, wie es ist, und wenn dieser Gedanke wirklich gedacht wird, d.h. als Frage uns in das Seiende hinein- und damit hinausstellt, wenn dieser Gedanke der ewigen Wiederkunft »der Gedanke der Gedanken« (XII, 64) ist, wie ihn Nietzsche einmal nennt,  –  soll er dann nicht für jeden Menschen ein »Schwergewicht« sein können, nicht nur ein Schwergewicht unter Anderen, sondern »das größte Schwergewicht«?

Doch Warum dieses? was ist der Mensch? Ist er das Wesen, das ein Schwergewicht braucht, immer ein Schwergewicht sich anhängt und anhängen muß? Welch gefährliche Notwendigkeit ist hier im Spiel? Ein Schwergewicht kann auch herabziehen, den Menschen erniedrigen, und, wenn er unten ist, als Schwergewicht überflüssig werden, so daß der Mensch dann plötzlich ohne Schwergewicht bleibt und nicht mehr abschätzen kann, was sein Oben ist, nicht mehr merken kann, daß er unten ist, statt dessen sich für die Mitte und das Maß hält, während doch alles dieses nur seine Mittelmäßigkeit ausmacht.
