Dizemos platonismo e não Platão porque não pretendemos dar sustentação à concepção de conhecimento aqui em questão a partir de uma análise originária e minuciosa da obra de Platão, mas apenas realçamos de maneira rudimentar um traço determinado por ela. Conhecimento é adequação ao que há para conhecer. O que há para conhecer? O ente mesmo. No que consiste esse ente? Desde onde se determina o seu ser? A partir das ideias e como as ἰδέαι. Elas “são” aquilo que é apreendido quando observamos as coisas em vista do modo como elas mesmas aparecem; em vista disso, como o que elas se dão: em vista de (138) sua quididade (τὸ τί ἐστιν). O que torna uma mesa uma mesa, o ser-mesa, pode ser visualizado; em verdade, não com os olhos sensíveis, mas com os olhos da alma; esse ver confunde-se com a apreensão disso que uma coisa é, de sua ideia. O que é assim visto é algo não sensível. Todavia, na medida em que ele é aquilo sob cuja luz conhecemos pela primeira vez o sensível, esse ente aí como mesa, o não-sensível se acha ao mesmo tempo acima do sensível. Ele é o supra-sensível, a quididade propriamente dita e o ser no ente. Por isso, o conhecer precisa se adequar ao supra-sensível, à ideia, trazer o que não é sensivelmente visível para diante de seus olhos, trazê-lo em geral para diante de si: re-pre-sentá-lo. Conhecer é adequar-se representacionalmente ao supra-sensível. O re-presentar, puro, não sensível que se desdobra em uma ligação mediadora do representado, se chama θεωρία. O conhecer é, em essência, teórico.

Na base dessa concepção do conhecimento como conhecimento “teórico” acha-se uma determinada interpretação do ser: essa concepção de conhecimento só tem sentido e razão de ser sobre o solo da metafísica. Com isso, a pregação de uma “essência eterna imutável intrínseca à ciência” ou bem é um mero modo de falar que não leva a sério o que fala, ou bem permanece, no outro caso, um desconhecimento dos fatos fundamentais da origem do conceito ocidental de saber. O “teórico” não é apenas diferente e diverso do “prático”, mas é fundado em si sobre uma determinada experiência fundamental. O mesmo vale também para o “prático”, que é contrastado a cada vez com o “teórico”. Tanto o “teórico” quanto o “prático”, assim como a cisão entre os dois, só são concebíveis a partir da respectiva essência do ser, isto é, metafisicamente. Nem o prático se altera sempre a cada vez em razão do teórico, nem o teórico em razão da modificação do prático, mas sempre os dois simultaneamente a partir da posição metafísica fundamental.

We say “Platonism,” and Not Plato, because here we are dealing with the conception of knowledge that corresponds to that term, not by way of an original and detailed examination of Plato’s works, but only by setting in rough relief one particular aspect of his work. Knowing is approximation to what is to be known. What is to be known? The being itself. Of what does it consist? Where is its Being determined? On the basis of the Ideas and as the ideai. They “are” what is apprehended when we look at things to see how they look, to see what they give themselves out to be, to see their what-being (to ti estin). What makes a table a table, table-being, can be seen; to be sure, not with the sensory eye of the body, but with the eye of the soul. Such sight is apprehension of what a matter is, its idea. What is so seen is something nonsensuous. But because it is that in the light of which we first come to know what is sensuous – that thing there, as a table – the nonsensuous at the same time stands above the sensuous. It is the supersensuous and the proper what-being and Being of the being. Therefore, knowledge must measure itself against the supersensuous, the Idea; it must somehow bring forward what is not sensuously visible for a face-to-face encounter: it must put forward or present. Knowledge is presentative measurement (152) of self upon the supersensuous. Pure nonsensuous presentation, which unfolds in a mediating relation that derives from what is represented, is called theoria. Knowledge is in essence theoretical.

The conception of knowledge as “theoretical” is undergirded by a particular interpretation of Being; such a conception has meaning and is correct only on the basis of metaphysics. To preach the “eternally immutable essence of science” is therefore either to employ an empty turn of phrase that does not take seriously what it says, or to mistake the basic facts concerning the origin of the concept of Western science. The “theoretical” is not merely something distinguished and differentiated from the “practical,” but is itself grounded in a particular basic experience of Being. The same is true also of the “practical,” which for its part is juxtaposed to the “theoretical.” Both of these, and the difference between them, are to be grasped solely from the essence of Being which is relevant in each case, which is to say, they are to be grasped metaphysically. Neither does the practical change on the basis of the theoretical, nor does the theoretical change on the basis of the practical: both change always simultaneously on the basis of their fundamental metaphysical position.

Erkennen ist Angleichung an das zu Erkennende. Was ist das zu Erkennende? Das Seiende Selbst. worin besteht dieses? Woher bestimmt sich dessen Sein? Aus den Ideen und als die ἰδέαι. Sie »sind« jenes, was vernommen wird, wenn wir die Dinge auf das hin Ansehen, Wie sie selbst Aussehen, als was sie sich geben, auf ihr Was-sein (τὸ τί ἐστιν). Was einen Tisch zum Tisch Macht, das Tisch-sein, läßt sich ersehen, zwar nicht mit dem sinnlichen Auge des Leibes, aber mit dem der Seele; dieses sehen ist das Vernehmen dessen, was eine Sache ist, ihrer Idee. Das so Gesichtete ist ein Nichtsinnliches. Weil es aber jenes ist, in dessen Licht wir erst das Sinnliche, dieses da als Tisch, erkennen, steht das Nichtsinnliche zugleich über dem Sinnlichen. Es ist das Über-sinnliche und das eigentliche Was-sein und Sein am Seienden. Daher muß sich dem Übersinnlichen, der Idee, das Erkennen anmessen, das nicht sinnlich Sichtbare sich zu Gesicht, überhaupt vor sich bringen: vor-stellen. Das Erkennen ist vorstellendes Sichanmessen an das Übersinnliche. Das reine, nichtsinnliche Vor-stellen, das sich in einem vermittelnden Beziehen des Vorgestellten entfaltet, heißt θεωρία. Das Erkennen ist im Wesen theoretisch.

Dieser Auffassung des Erkennens als des »theoretischen« liegt eine bestimmte Auslegung des Seins zugrunde, und diese Erkenntnisauffassung hat nur Sinn und recht auf dem Boden der Metaphysik. Von einem »ewigen unveränderliehen (177) Wesen der Wissenschaft« predigen, ist daher entweder eine bloße Redensart, die selbst nicht Ernst nimmt, was sie sagt, oder es bleibt im Anderen Falle eine Verkennung der Grundtatsachen des Ursprungs des abendländischen Wissenshegriffes. Das »Theoretische« ist nicht nur unterschieden und verschieden vom »Praktischen«, sondern es ist in sich auf eine bestimmte Grunderfahrung des Seins gegründet. Dasselbe gilt auch von dem »Praktischen«, das jeweils gegen das »Theoretische« abgesetzt wird. Beides und ihre Scheidung sind nur aus dem jeweiligen Wesen des Seins, d.h. metaphysisch zu begreifen. Weder wandelt sich je das Praktische auf Grund des Theoretischen noch das Theoretische auf Grund der Änderung des Praktischen, sondern immer beide zugleich aus der metaphysischen Grundstellung heraus.
