A ἀλήθεια é θεά, a deusa. Mas, de fato, somente para os gregos e, mesmo entre eles, apenas para uns poucos de seus pensadores. A verdade – uma deusa para os gregos no sentido grego – certamente.

Mas o que é essência da verdade para nós? – Nós não o sabemos, porque não compreendemos a essência da verdade, nem compreendemos a nós mesmos, e não sabemos quem nós mesmos somos. Talvez essa dupla ignorância sobre a verdade e sobre nós mesmos seja uma única e mesma. Mas já é bom saber deste não-saber, e precisamente por causa do ser, ao qual pertence o temor do pensar. Pensar não é saber, mas talvez seja mais essencial do que saber, porque está mais próximo do ser, está naquela proximidade que é encoberta de longe. Não sabemos a essência da verdade. Por isso nos é necessário perguntar sobre isso e, nessa questão, ser tocados de modo que experimentemos qual a condição mínima que necessita ser realizada, se nos dispomos a dignificar a essência da verdade como uma questão. A condição é que realizemos a tarefa do pensar.

A meditação tentada foi acompanhada por uma evidência. A saber: podemos pensar a essência da verdade somente se trilhamos no mais extremo limite do ente como um todo. Lá reconhecemos que se aproxima um instante da história, cuja singularidade não se determina, de forma alguma, apenas a partir da situação corrente do mundo e de nossa própria história nele. O que “está em questão” não é simplesmente o ser ou o não-ser de nosso povo histórico, nem o ser ou não-ser de uma “cultura” “europeia”, pois nessas instâncias o que está em questão são, já e sempre, somente entes. Previamente a tudo isso, uma decisão primordial necessita ser realizada com respeito ao ser e ao não-ser mesmos, ao ser e ao não-ser em sua essência, na verdade de sua essência. Como os entes devem poder ser salvos e resguardados no livre de sua essência, se a essência do ser permanece não-decidida, não-interrogada e simplesmente esquecida?

Sem a verdade do ser, os entes jamais são estáveis; sem a verdade do ser, sem o ser e a essência da verdade, a verdadeira decisão acerca do ser e não-ser de um ente permanece sem a abertura de liberdade, a partir do que toda a história começa.

A questão retorna: o que é a essência da verdade para nós? A preleção deveria dar somente uma indicação para o reino, a partir do qual a palavra de Parmênides fala.

A indicação dentro de sua referência intencionava acenar para onde o pensador primordial está a caminho, ou seja, a casa da deusa ἀλήθεια. A partir dessa casa também a genuína viagem de sua experiência recebe, então, a indicação do caminho. A casa da deusa é o lugar da primeira chegada na jornada do pensar, e é, então, o ponto de partida para o curso do pensar que carrega todas as relações com os entes. A essência dessa casa é inteiramente determinada pela deusa. Seu morar lá faz, antes de tudo, a casa ser a casa que é. Entretanto, no morar se plenifica a “essência” da deusa. Ela é o vislumbrar que se doa e mora, a partir do iluminado, no seu interior, para o desprovido de luz. A ἀλήθεια é o descobrimento que encobre em si toda a emergência, todo o aparecimento e desaparecimento. A ἀλήθεια é a essência do verdadeiro: a verdade. Esta vige em todo vigente e é a essência (Wesen) de toda “essência”: a essencialidade (Wesenheit).

Experimentar isso é o destino do pensador primordial. Seu pensar conhece na essencialidade a essência da verdade (não apenas a essência do verdadeiro) como a verdade da essência.

Como a essência da emergência (φύσις·), a ἀλήθεια é o próprio começo. A viagem para a casa da deusa é o pensar que aponta para o começo. O pensador pensa o começo na medida em que pensa a ἀλήθεια. Uma tal recordação (Andenken) é, em toda parte, o único pensamento (Gedanke) do pensador (Denkens). Este pensamento, como o dito do pensador, entra para a palavra e para a saga do Ocidente.

Essa saga diz a essência da história, a qual, porque permanece o destino do ser e o ser apenas inesperadamente se ilumina, acontece sempre no inesperado da primordialidade do começo. A história afinada, a partir da essência primordial da iluminação do ser, envia os entes sempre de novo e sempre somente para o destino do declínio em encobrimentos de longa duração. De acordo com esse destino vigora aqui o declínio, a tarde do que emergiu primordialmente.

A terra incluída por essa história no seu espaço de tempo e nisso encoberta é o Ocidente [Abend-land, literalmente, “terra da tarde”], de acordo com o sentido primordial (ou seja, em termos da história do ser) desta palavra.

A saga ocidental diz o começo, isto é, a essência ainda encoberta da verdade do ser. A palavra da saga ocidental preserva a pertença da humanidade ocidental à região de casa da deusa ἀλήθεια.

But what is the essence of truth for us? We do Not know, because we neither comprehend the essence of truth nor do we comprehend ourselves, and we do not know who we ourselves are. Perhaps this double ignorance about the truth and about ourselves is itself one and the same. But it is already good to know this ignorance, and precisely for the sake of Being, to which the reverence of thinking belongs. Thinking is not knowing, but perhaps it is more essential than knowing, because it is closer to Being in that closeness which is concealed from afar. We do not know the essence of truth. Therefore it is necessary for us to ask about it and to be pressed toward this question so as to experience the minimal condition that must be fulfilled if we set out to dignify the essence of truth with a question. This condition is that we take up thinking.

Our attempted reflection has been accompanied by one insight. It is this we may think the essence of truth only if we tread upon the most extreme edges of beings as a whole. We thereby acknowledge that a moment of history is approaching, whose uniqueness is by no means determined simply, or at all, on the basis of the current situation of the world and of our own history in it. What is at stake is not simply the being and non-being of our historical people, nor the being and not-being of a “European culture,” for in these instances what is at stake is only beings. In advance of all that, a primordial decision must be made concerning Being and not-being themselves. Being and not-being in their essence, in the truth of their essence. How are beings supposed to be saved and secured in the free of their essence, if the essence of Being is undecided, unquestioned, and even forgotten?

Without the truth of Being, beings are never steadfast; without the truth of Being and without the Being and essence of truth the very decision about the Being and non-being of a being remains without the openness of freedom, from which all history begins

The question returns: what is the essence of truth for us? Our lectures were only supposed to refer to the region out of which the word of Parmenides speaks.

The directive within this reference pointed to the destination toward which the primordial thinker is under way, namely the home of the goddess Ἀλήθεια. This home also directs the course of the thinker’s genuine experience The home of the goddess is the first place of arrival on the journey of thinking and it is also the point of departure for the course of thinking that bears out all relations to beings. The essence of this home is wholly determined by the goddess Her dwelling there first makes the home the home it is. And in dwelling the “essence” of the goddess is fulfilled She is the self-presenting and hence indwelling look of the light into the darkness. ’Ἀλήθεια is the disclosedness that in itself shelters all emergence and all appearance and disappearance. ’Ἀλήθεια is the essence of the true: the truth. The truth dwells in everything that comes to presence; it is the essence of all essence, essentiality .

To experience this is the destiny of the primordial thinker His thinking knows in essentiality the essence of truth (not just the essence of the true) as the truth of the essence

As the essence of emergence (φύσις). ἀλήθεια is the beginning itself The journey to the home of the goddess is a thinking out toward the beginning The thinker thinks the beginning insofar as he thinks ἀλ-θεια. Such recollection is thinking’s single thought. This thought, as the dictum of the thinker, enters into the word and language of the Occident

This language expresses the essence of history, and history, because it is the sending of Being and because Being only comes to light unexpectedly, is appropriated always in the unexpectedness of the primordiality of the beginning The history attuned to the primordial essence of the clearing of Being destines beings ever again to the destiny of decline in long-enduring concealments. According to this destiny, decline now holds sway, the evening of what emerged primordially.

The land drawn into its space-time from this history and sheltered therein is the Occident [Abend-land, literally, “evening-land”] according to the primordial (i.e., in terms of the history of Being) meaning of this word.

The language of the Occident expresses the beginning, i e., the still concealed essence of the truth of Being. The word of the language of the Occident preserves the appurtenance of Occidental humanity to the home region of the goddess ἀλήθεια.

Was aber ist das Wesen der Wahrheit für uns? — Wir Wissen es Nicht, weil wir weder über das Wesen der Wahrheit noch über uns verständigt sind und nicht wissen, Wer wir selbst sind. Vielleicht ist diese zwiefache Unwissenheit über die Wahrheit und über uns selbst eine einzige und dieselbe. Doch ist es schon gut, dieses Nichtwissen zu wissen, und zwar des Seins wegen, dem die Ehrfurcht des Denkens gehört. denken ist kein Wissen, aber vielleicht wesentlicher als das Wissen, weil näher dem Sein in jener Nähe, die verhüllt ist von Feme. Wir wissen es nicht, das Wesen der Wahrheit. Deshalb ist es nötig, daß wir darnach fragen und auf diese Frage in einer Weise gestoßen Werden, daß wir dabei erfahren, welches die geringste Bedingung ist, die erfüllt Sein muß, wenn wir uns anschicken, das Wesen der Wahrheit einer Frage zu würdigen. Die Bedingung ist, daß wir Denkende werden.

Die versuchte Besinnung geht auf eine Einsicht zusammen. Nach ihr dürfen wir das Wesen der Wahrheit nur denken, wenn wir an die äußersten Ränder des Seienden im Ganzen treten. Da Erkennen wir, daß ein Augenblick der Geschichte nahe ist, dessen Einzigkeit sich keineswegs nur und erst aus dem Zustand der seienden Welt und unserer eigenen Geschichte in ihr bestimmt. Es »geht« nicht nur »um« das Sein und Nichtsein unseres geschichtlichen Volkes, es »geht« nicht nur »um« das Sein oder Nichtsein einer »europäischen« »Kultur«, denn dabei geht es immer schon und nur um Seiendes. All diesem zuvor und Anfänglich steht zur Entscheidung: das Sein und Nichtsein selbst, das Sein und das Nichtsein in ihrem Wesen, in der Wahrheit Ihres Wesens. Wie soll Seiendes gerettet und in das Freie seines Wesens geborgen werden, wenn das Wesen des Seins imentschieden, ungefragt und gar vergessen ist?

Ohne die Wahrheit des Seins ist nie eine Beständigkeit des Seienden, ohne die Wahrheit des Seins und ohne das Sein und Wesen der Wahrheit bleibt selbst die Entscheidung über das Sein und Nichtsein eines Seienden ohne das Offene der Freiheit, aus der alle Geschichte anfängt.

Die Frage kehrt wieder: Was ist das Wesen der Wahrheit für uns? Die Vorlesung sollte erst nur einen Hinweis auf den Bereich geben, aus dem das Wort des Parmenides spricht.

Die Weisung des Hinweises ging auf das, Wohin der anfängliche Denker unterwegs ist. Das ist das Haus der Göttin ἀλήθεια. Von diesem Haus her empfängt dann auch die eigentliche Fahrt seines Erfahrens erst die Wegweisung. Das Haus der Göttin ist der Ort der ersten Ankunft der denkenden Wanderung. Dasselbe Haus ist der Ausgang für die Ausfahrt des Denkens, das alle Bezüge zum Seienden austrägt. Das Wesen dieses Hauses wird durch die Göttin durchstimmt. Ihr wohnen erst Macht das Haus zu dem Haus, das es ist. Im Wohnen jedoch erfüllt sich das »Wesen« der Göttin. Sie ist das sich dargebende und also einwohnende Hereinblicken des lichten in das Lichtlose. Die ἀλήθεια ist die allen Aufgang und jedes Erscheinen und Entschwinden in sich bergende Entbergung. Die ‘ἀλήθεια ist das Wesen des Wahren: die Wahrheit. Diese west in Allem Wesenden und ist das Wesen alles »Wesens«: die Wesenheit.

Sie zu erfahren ist die Bestimmung des Denkers, der anfänglich denkt. Sein Denken weiß in der Wesenheit das Wesen der Wahrheit (nicht nur das des Wahren) als die Wahrheit des Wesens.

Als das Wesen des Aufgangs (φύσις) ist die ἀλήθεια der Anfang selbst. Die Fahrt zum Hause der Göttin ist das Hindenken zum Anfang. Der Denker denkt den Anfang, insofern er an die ἀλήθεια denkt. Solches Andenken ist überall der einzige Gedanke des Denkens. Dieser Gedanke geht als der Spruch des Denkers ein in das Wort der abendländischen Sage.

Diese Sage sagt das Wesen der Geschichte, die, weil sie das Geschieht des Seins bleibt und das Sein nur unversehens sich lichtet, stets im Unversehlichen der Anfänge des Anfangs ereignet wird. Die aus dem anfänglichen Wesen der Lichtung des Seins gestimmte Geschichte schickt das Seiende immer wieder und immer nur in das Geschick des Unterganges in langhin währende Verbergungen. Diesem Geschick gemäß Walten Hier die Untergänge, die Abende der anfänglichen Aufgänge.

Das Land, das von dieser Geschichte in ihren Zeit-Raum einbezogen und darin geborgen wird, ist das Abend-land nach einem anfänglichen (d. h. nach dem seinsgeschichtlichen) Sinn dieses Wortes.

Die abendländische Sage sagt den Anfang, d. h. das noch verborgene Wesen der Wahrheit des Seins. Das Wort der abendländischen Sage verwahrt die Zugehörigkeit des abendländischen Menschentums zum Hausbezirk der Göttin ἀλήθεια.
