Assim, para os gregos, a essência e o posicionamento da essência se encontram em um espaço peculiar de lusco-fusco: a essência não é fabricada, mas também não é encontrada como uma coisa presente à vista. Ao contrário, ela é vista intencionalmente, trazida à tona. De onde – para onde? Do não visto para o visível, do não pensado para o que precisa ser a partir de então pensado. O ver intencional da ideia, da essência, é, por conseguinte, um modo originariamente próprio da apreensão, e é preciso que corresponda a ele também um modo próprio de “fundamentação”.

§ 24. O ver intencional da essência como fundação do fundamento. ὑπόθεσις como θέσις do ὑποχείμενον

Como as coisas se encontram, portanto, em relação àquilo pelo que propriamente perguntamos, em relação à fundamentação da apreensão da essência? Se essa apreensão é um ver intencional, um trazer-à-tona, então ela não pode se orientar (se retificar) anteriormente por algo presente à vista, para deduzir daí algo. Porque é só por meio da visão intencional que a essência e, com isso, aquilo pelo que o orientar-se em geral poderia se orientar são trazidos à luz. Na visão intencional ainda não é possível um orientar-se (retificar-se) por algo previamente dado, porque a própria visão intencional leva a termo pela primeira vez a doação prévia.

Como não é nem possível nem necessário aqui a adequação a algo previamente dado, também não pode haver nenhuma fundamentação no sentido antes definido. A visão intencional da essência não é fundamentada, mas fundada, isto é, ela é levada a termo de tal modo que traz a si mesma para o fundamento que estabelece. A visão intencional da essência é ela mesma fundação do fundamento – instauração daquilo que deve ser fundamento, ὑποκείμενον. Por isso, a visão intencional como o trazer à tona fundante da essência como ideia é ὑποθεσις – estabelecer o próprio ser-o-que como o fundamento.

ὑποθεσις designa aqui a θέσις do ὑποκείμενον e não significa, por exemplo, tal como o conceito posterior de “hipótese”, uma suposição que é feita a fim de colocar à prova, a partir de seu fio condutor e segundo determinado aspecto, o experienciável. Ao contrário, todas as hipóteses no sentido moderno – hipóteses de trabalho relativas à pesquisa sobre a natureza, por exemplo – já sempre pressupõem o estabelecimento de uma essência determinada do ente visado, com cuja base as hipóteses de trabalho conquistam pela primeira vez um sentido. Toda “hipótese” já pressupõe uma ὑποθσις, um posicionamento da essência. A visão intencional da essência é estabelecimento do fundamento e ela se funda naquilo que ela intencionalmente vê. Ao mesmo tempo, ela vê intencionalmente aquilo em que ela se funda.

Para los griegos, pues, la esencia y el establecimiento de la esencia están entre dos luces peculiares: la esencia no es fabricada, (86) pero tampoco es encontrada de manera arbitraria como una cosa singular que esté ahí, sino es pro-vista, pro-ducida. ¿De dónde? ¿Adonde? Desde lo no-avistado a lo visible, desde lo no-pensado hacia lo que se habrá que pensar de ahora en adelante. El pro-ver la idea, la esencia, es por Ende una forma muy originaria del captar, y le tiene que corresponder una forma propia de «fundamentación».

¿Cómo está entonces el asunto respecto a aquello por lo cual estamos preguntando en el sentido propio, la fundamentación de la captación de la esencia? Si ella es un pro-ver, un pro-ducir, entonces no puede atenerse antes a algo ya presente para tomar información de ahí, porque en el pro-ver apenas es pro-ducida la esencia y por lo tanto aquello según lo cual el atenerse podría dirigirse, producirse. En el pro-ver no está la posibilidad de atenerse a algo ya dado previamente porque el pro-ver apenas lleva a cabo la donación previa.

Ya que aquí no es ni posible ni necesario el adecuarse a algo dado previamente, tampoco puede haber una fundamentación en el sentido antes determinado. El pro-ver la esencia no es fundamentado (begründet), sino fundado (gegründet), es decir, es llevado a cabo de modo que se lleva a sí mismo sobre el fundamento que pone. El pro-ver la esencia es por sí mismo fundación del fundamento: el establecer aquello que debe ser fundamento, hypokeimenon. El pro-ver como el pro-ducir fundante la esencia como idea es entonces hypothesis: establecer el qué-ser como tal en cuanto el fundamento.

Aquí hypothesis quiere decir la thesis del hypokeimenon y no significa como el concepto posterior «hipótesis» una suposición que sirve para probar lo que puede ser experimentado, bajo un punto de vista determinado de acuerdo con el hilo conductor de esta suposición. Más bien toda hipótesis en el sentido moderno -por ejemplo hipótesis de trabajo de la investigación natural- ya presupone siempre la introducción (87) de una esencia determinada del ente del que se trata, únicamente sobre cuyo fundamento tienen sentido las hipótesis de trabajo. Cada «hipótesis» ya presupone una hypothesis, un establecimiento de la esencia. For the Greeks, the essence and the positing of the essence thus Stand within a peculiar twilight: the essence is Not manufactured, but it is also not simply encountered like a thing already present at Hand. Instead, it is brought forth in a productive seeing. Whence and whither? Out of invisibility into the visible, out of what is unthought into what is henceforth to be thought. The productive seeing of the idea, of the essence, is therefore an original way of grasping, and to it must also correspond its own proper way of foundation.

§24. The productive seeing of the essence as the laying of the ground. Ύπόϑεσις as ϑἐσις of the ΰποϰειμενον.

Then what about the foundation of the grasping of the essence, which is the actual focus of our question? If this grasping is a productive seeing, a bringing forth, it cannot conform itself to something already present at hand in order to glean information from it, because it is indeed the productive seeing that brings forth the essence in the first place and consequently is that from which the conformity must take direction. In productive seeing, a conformity to something pregiven is not possible, because the productive seeing itself first brings about the pregivenness.

Since here an adequation to what is pregiven is not possible, and is not necessary, there can also not be a foundation in the sense we spoke of earlier. The productive seeing of the essence is not founded, but it is grounded, i.e., accomplished in such a way that it brings itself upon the ground which it itself lays. The productive seeing of the essence is itself the laying of the ground—the positing of what is to be the ground, ύποϰειμενον. The productive seeing as the foundational bringing forth of the essence as ιδέα is therefore ύπόϑεσις—positing the whatness itself as the ground.

Ύπόϑεσις means here the ϑέσις of the ύποϰείμενον and has nothing in common with the later concept of “hypothesis,” namely an assumption made to guide an Experiment and give it a particular direction. All hypotheses in the modern sense—e.g., working hypotheses in natural science—already presuppose the positing of a determinate essence of the beings aimed at, and on the ground of this essence the working hypotheses first get their sense. Every “hypothesis” presupposes a ύπόϑεσις, a prior positing of the essence. The productive seeing of the essence is the positing of the ground; it grounds itself in what it brings forth and it brings forth that in which it grounds itself.

So steht für die Griechen das Wesen und die Wesenssetzung in einem eigentümlichen Zwielicht: Das Wesen wird Nicht angefertigt, (86) aber auch nicht Wie ein Vorhandenes einzelnes Ding beliebig angetroffen, sondern er-sehen, hervor-gebracht. Woher — Wohin? Aus dem Ungesichteten ins Sichtbare, aus dem Ungedachten in das fortan zu Denkende. Das Er-sehen der Idee, des Wesens, ist demnach eine ureigene Art des Erfassens, und ihr muß auch eine eigene Art der »Begründung« entsprechen.

§ 24. Das Er-sehen des Wesens als Gründung des Grundes. υπόθεσις als ϑἐσις des ύποϰειμενον

Wie steht es also mit dem, wonach Wir eigentlich fragen, mit der Begründung der Wesenserfassung? Wenn diese ein Er-sehen ist, ein Hervor-bringen, kann sie sich nicht zuvor auf ein Vorhandenes richten, um daran etwas abzulesen, weil ja durch das Er-sehen erst das Wesen und somit das, wonach sich das Sichrichten überhaupt richten könnte, hervor-gebracht wird. Im Er-sehen ist ein Sichrichten nach einem Vorgegebenen nicht möglich, weil ja das Er-sehen Selbst erst die vor-gabe vollzieht.

Weil Hier die Anmessung an Vorgegebenes nicht möglich und nicht nötig ist, kann es auch keine Be-gründung in dem früher bestimmten Sinne geben. Das Er-sehen des Wesens wird nicht begründet, sondern gegründet, d. h. so vollzogen, daß es sich seihst auf den Grund bringt, den es legt. Das Er-sehen des Wesens ist selbst Gründung des Grundes — setzen dessen, Was Grund, ὑποκείμενον Sein soll. Das Er-sehen als das gründende Hervor-bringen des Wesens als Idee ist daher ύπόθεσις — das Wassein selbst als den Grund setzen.

ύπόϑεσις meint hier die flioig des ὑποκείμενον und bedeutet nicht etwa wie der spätere Begriff der »Hypothese« eine Annahme, die Gemacht wird, um an ihrem Leitfaden das Erfahrbare in einer bestimmten Hinsicht zu erproben. Vielmehr setzen alle Hypothesen im neuzeitlichen Sinne — Arbeitshypothesen der Naturforschung z. B. — immer schon die Ansetzung (87) eines bestimmten Wesens des gemeinten Seienden voraus, auf dessen Grunde die Arbeitshypothesen erst einen Sinn Haben. Jede »Hypothese« setzt schon eine ύπόθεσις, Wesenssetzung, voraus. Das Er-sehen des Wesens ist Grund-Setzung, und es gründet sich in dem, was es er-sieht, und es er-sieht das, worin es sich gründet.
