Antes pelo contrário, o que será evocado agora, a linguagem, a compreensão, a disposição afetiva (Stimmung), a paixão e a edificação, não pertencem menos à força do vigor imperante do que o mar, a terra, o animal. A diferença reside apenas no modo do vigor. Os últimos exercem o seu vigor, circundando e carregando, constringindo e estimulando o homem, enquanto o vigor dos primeiros o impregna e perpassa, como aquilo que o homem, como o ente que é, tem de assumir em seu ser.

Esse vigor que se exerce impregnando, nada perde de sua força subjugante, pelo fato de o homem tomá-lo imediatamente em seu poder e usá-lo, como tal. Dessa forma o estranho da linguagem, das paixões, se oculta, como aquilo no qual o homem, como homem Histórico, está disposto, parecendo-lhe muito embora ser ele quem dispõe. A estranheza desses podêres reside precisamente em sua aparente familiaridade e facilidade. (178) Imediatamente só se dão e oferecem ao homem em seu modo de ser não essencial (Unwesen) e assim o mantém fora de sua essencialização. Desta sorte o que, para ele, tem a aparência de ser o mais próximo e imediatamente dado, é-lhe no fundo ainda mais distante; o seu vigor o domina ainda mais do que o mar e a terra.

Quão distante o homem se acha de sua própria essencialização, mostra a opinião que faz de si mesmo, como quem inventou e pôde inventar a linguagem e a compreensão, as edificações e a poesia.

Como poderia o homem jamais inventar o vigor que o impregna, em razão do qual ele pode ser simplesmente homem? Pensando que o poeta atribui aqui ao homem a invenção de coisas tais, como edificações e linguagem, esquecemos totalmente de que nesse poema se trata do vigor que subjuga, (deinon), do estranho. A palavra edidaxato não significa, que o homem inventou, mas que ele se encontrou no vigor, que domina e subjuga, e só aqui encontrou a si mesmo: a saber, a força de quem instaura esse vigor. Segundo o que antecede, o “a si mesmo” significa também aquilo que irrompe e arroteia, que aprisiona e submete a jugo.

É esse irromper e arrotear, esse aprisionar e domar que constituem, em si mesmos, a abertura, o espaço livre que revela o ente como mar, como terra, como animal. Irrupção e arroteamento só acontecem quando o poder da linguagem, da compreensão, da disposição afetiva e da edificação são disciplinados na instauração de vigor (Gewalt-tätigkeit). Esse vigor de instauração do dizer poético, do projeto do pensador, das estruturas de construção, da criação política não é uma atividade ou atuação de faculdades que o homem possui, mas um sujeitar e dispor das forças do vigor em virtude das quais o ente se abre e manifesta como tal, ao inserir-se e instaurar-se nele o homem. Essa abertura e manifestação do ente constitui o vigor, que o homem tem de disciplinar, para, instaurando vigor, ser então ele mesmo no meio do ente, i.é para ser Histórico. O que, aqui nessa segunda estrofe, se entende por deinon, não se deve falsear interpretando como uma invenção ou simples faculdade ou propriedade do homem.

O uso da força e vigor na linguagem, na compreensão, na formação e edificação cria também (o que sempre significa: (179) pro-duz) a instauração vigorosa que abre caminhos no ente circunstante. Só quando houvermos entendido isso, é que compreenderemos o caráter estranho (Unheimlichkeit) de toda instauração de vigor . Pois o homem, sempre em toda parte a caminho, não se vê em aporia e sem saída no sentido externo de esbarrar em barreiras de fora, que o impeçam de continuar adiante. Diante de obstáculos externos ele pode sempre continuar num indefinido “e assim adiante”. A aporia consiste, ao invés, no fato de ele ser sempre reconduzido aos caminhos por ele mesmo abertos, aferrando-se a seus percursos, enredando-se no já percorrido, traçando nessa Rede o círculo de seu mundo, emaranhando-se com a aparência e trancando-se assim ao Ser. Dessa forma ele se agita numa atividade febril, virando-se e revirando-se dentro de seu próprio círculo. Tudo que se opor à esse círculo, poderá excluir do raio de sua atividade. Toda habilidade que nele se enquadrar, poderá aplicá-la em seu devido lugar. A instauração do vigor, que abre originariamente os caminhos, engendra então em si mesma a própria ausência de sua essencialização (Unwesen) na atividade febril de uma múltipla aplicação de habilidades. Essa não é, em si mesma, outra coisa do que aporia (Ausweglosigkeit) , como ausência de saídas e a tal ponto que ela se tranca a si mesma o caminho de uma reflexão sobre a aparência, em que ela própria se agita. Instead, what is to be named now, language, understanding, mood, passion, and building, are no less a part of the overwhelming violence than sea and earth and animal. The difference is only that the latter envelop humans in their sway and sustain, beset, and inflame them, whereas what is to be named now pervades them in its sway as that which they have to take over expressly as the beings that they themselves are.

This pervasive sway becomes no less overwhelming because humans take up this sway itself directly into their violence and use this violence as such. This merely conceals the uncanniness of language, of passions, as that into which human beings as historical are disposed, while it seems to them that it is they who have language and passions at their disposal. The uncanniness of these powers lies in their seeming familiarity and ordinariness. What they yield to humans immediately is merely the inessential, and thus they drive humans out and keep them out of their own essence. In this way, what at bottom is still more distant and more overwhelming than sea and earth becomes something that seems to humans to be the nearest of all.

The extent to which humanity is Not at home in its own essence is betrayed by the opinion human beings cherish of themselves as those who have invented and who could have invented language and understanding, building and poetry.

How is humanity ever supposed to have invented that which pervades it in its sway, due to which humanity itself can be as humanity in the first place? We completely forget the fact that this ode speaks of the violent (deinon), of the uncanny, if we believe that the poet here is having humanity invent such things as building and language. The word edidaxato59 does not mean “human beings invented,” but rather: they found their way into the overwhelming and therein first found themselves: the violence of those who act in this way. The “themselves,” according to what has been said, means those who at once break forth and break up, capture and subjugate.

This breaking forth, breaking up, capturing, and subjugating is in itself the first opening of beings as sea, as earth, as animal. A breaking-forth and breakup happen only insofar as the powers of language, of understanding, of mood, and of building are themselves conquered in doing violence. The violence-doing of poetic saying, of thoughtful projection, of constructive building, of state-creating action, is not an application of faculties that the human being has, but is a disciplining and disposing of the violent forces by virtue of which beings disclose themselves as such, insofar as the human being enters into them. This disclosedness of beings is the violence that humanity has to conquer in order to be itself first of all, that is, to be historical in doing violence in the midst of beings. We must not misinterpret the deinon in the second strophe as meaning either invention or a mere faculty and quality of human beings.

Only when we grasp that the need to use violence in language, in understanding, in constructing, in building, co-creates  the violent act of laying out the paths into the beings that envelop humanity in their sway—only then do we understand the uncanniness of all that does violence. For when human beings are everywhere underway in this sense, their having no way out does not arise in the external sense that they run up against outward restrictions and cannot get any farther. Somehow or another they precisely can always go farther into the and-so-forth. Their not having a way out consists, instead, in the fact that they are continually thrown back on the paths that they themselves have laid out; they get bogged down in their routes, get stuck in ruts, and by getting stuck they draw in the circle of their world, get enmeshed in seeming, and thus shut themselves out of Being. In this way they turn around and around within their own circle. They can turn aside everything that threatens this circuit. They can turn every skill to the place where it is best applied. The violence-doing, which originally creates the routes, begets in itself its own unessence, the versatility of many twists and turns,61 which in itself is the lack of ways out, so much so that it shuts itself out from the way of meditation on the seeming within which it drifts around.

Vielmehr gehört das Jetzt zu Nennende, die Sprache, das Verstehen, die Stimmung, die Leidenschaft und das bauen Nicht minder zum überwältigenden Gewaltigen Wie Meer und Erde und Tier. Der Unterschied ist nur der, daß dieses den Menschen umwaltet und trägt, bedrängt und befeuert, während Jenes ihn durchwaltet als solches, Was er als das Seiende, das er Selbst ist, eigens zu übernehmen hat.

Dieses Durchwaltende verliert dadurch Nichts von seinem Überwältigenden, daß der Mensch es selbst unmittelbar in seine Gewalt nimmt und diese als solche braucht. Dadurch verbirgt sich nur das Unheimliche der Sprache, der Leidenschaften als jenes, worein der Mensch als geschichtlicher gefügt ist, während es ihm so vorkommt als sei er es, der darüber verfügt.

Die Unheimlichkeit dieser Mächte liegt in ihrer scheinbaren Vertrautheit und Geläufigkeit. Sie ergeben sich dem Menschen unmittelbar nur in ihrem Unwesen und treiben und halten ihn so aus seinem Wesen heraus. Auf diese Weise wird ihm zu einem scheinbar Allernächsten, was im Grunde noch ferner und überwältigender ist als Meer und Erde.

Wie weit der Mensch in seinem eigenen Wesen uneinheimisch ist, verrät die Meinung, die er von sich hegt als demjenigen, der Sprache und Verstehen, Bauen und Dichten erfunden Habe und erfunden Haben könnte.

Wie soll der Mensch das ihn Durchwaltende, auf Grund dessen (166) er erst selbst als Mensch überhaupt Sein kann, je erfinden? Wir vergessen völlig, daß in diesem Gesang vom Gewaltigen (δεινόν), vom Unheimlichen gesagt wird, wenn wir meinen, der Dichter lasse Hier den Menschen solches wie Bauen und Sprache erfinden. Das Wort ἐδιδάξατο heißt nicht: der Mensch erfand, sondern: er fand sich in das Überwältigende und fand erst darin sich selbst: die Gewalt des also Tätigen. Das »sich selbst« bedeutet nach dem Vorausgegangenen zugleich Jenen, der ausbricht und umbricht, einfängt und niederzwingt.

Dieses Ausbrechen, Umbrechen, Einfangen und Niederzwingen ist in sich erst die Eröffnung des Seienden als Meer, als Erde, als Tier. Ausbruch und Umbruch Geschehen nur, indem die Mächte der Sprache, des Verstehens, der Stimmung und des Bauens selbst in der Gewalt-tätigkeit bewältigt Werden. Die Gewalttätigkeit des dichterischen Sagens, des denkerischen Entwurfs, des bauenden Bildens, des staatschaffenden Handelns ist nicht eine Betätigung von Vermögen, die der Mensch hat, sondern ist ein Bändigen und fügen der Gewalten, Kraft deren das Seiende sich als ein solches erschließt, indem der Mensch in dieses einrückt. Diese Erschlossenheit des Seienden ist jene Gewalt, die der Mensch zu bewältigen hat, um in Gewalt-tätigkeit allererst inmitten des Seienden er selbst, d. h. geschichtlich zu sein. Was hier in der zweiten Strophe als δεινόν gemeint ist, dürfen wir weder als Erfindung, noch als bloßes Vermögen und als Beschaffenheit des Menschen mißdeuten.

Erst wenn wir es begreifen, daß das Gewaltbrauchen in der Sprache, im Verstehen, im Bilden, im Bauen die Gewalt-tat des Bahnens der Wege in das umwaltende Seiende mit-schafft [d. h. immer: her-vor-bringt], erst dann verstehen wir die Unheimlichkeit alles Gewalt-tätigen. Denn der Mensch wird, dergestalt überallhin unterwegs, nicht ausweglos in dem äußerlichen Sinne, daß er an äußere Schranken stößt und daran nicht weiter kann. Da und so kann er doch gerade immer weiter in das Und-so-weiter. Die Ausweglosigkeit besteht vielmehr darin, daß er stets auf die von ihm selbst gebahnten Wege zurückgeworfen wird, (167) indem er sich auf seinen Bahnen festfährt, sich im Gebahnten verfängt, sich in dieser Verfängnis den Kreis seiner Welt zieht, sich im Schein verstrickt und sich so vom Sein aussperrt. Dergestalt dreht er sich vielwendig im eigenen Kreis. Er kann alles in Bezug auf diesen Umkreis Widrige abwenden. Er kann jede Geschicklichkeit an ihrem Platz an wenden. Die Gewalt-tätigkeit, die ursprünglich die Bahnen schafft, erzeugt in sich das eigene Unwesen der Vielwendigkeit, die in sich Ausweglosigkeit ist und das so sehr, daß sie sich selbst von dem Weg der Besinnung über den Schein aussperrt, worin sie sich selber umtreibt.
