A menção e correção desses dois equívocos não pretendem fazer com que os senhores entrem de repente numa clara relação com a filosofia. Todavia os senhores devem ficar logo desconfiados e suspeitando, quando juízos os mais correntes e até inclusive supostas experiências, os assaltarem de surpresa. Isso ocorre muitas vezes de um modo muito inocente e que rapidamente se impõe. Até se crê ter feito pessoalmente a experiência e se ouve facilmente confirmada, de que da filosofia “não se obtém resultado algum”; “com ela não se pode fazer nada”. Ambas as maneiras de falar, que de modo particular correm nos círculos dos professores e pesquisadores das ciências, exprimem verificações de indiscutível exatidão. Quem tentasse provar-lhes que por fim se “obtém mesmo alguma coisa”, esse não faria outra coisa senão aumentar e consolidar a incompreensão reinante. Essa se cifra no pre-conceito, segundo o qual se poderia avaliar a filosofia de acordo com os critérios vulgares, com que se decide da utilidade de bicicletas ou da eficácia de banhos medicinais.

Está pois certo e na melhor ordem dizer-se que “com filosofia nada se pode fazer”. O errado seria pensar, que, com Isso, terminou o juízo sobre a filosofia. Pois sobrevem-lhe ainda (42) um pequeno acréscimo na forma de uma contra-pergunta: se NÓS nada poderemos fazer com filosofia, acaso a filosofia também não poderá fazer alguma coisa CONOSCO, com tanto que nos abandonemos a ela? Isso basta para elucidar-nos o que a filosofia não é. [GA40CL:42-43]

La mention et la rectification des deux méprises indiquées plus haut ne peuvent nullement prétendre élucider d’un coup votre entrée en rapports evec la philosophie. Ce qu’il faut, c’est que vous ayez l’esprit alerté et étonné au moment précis où les jugements les plus courants, voire de soi-disant expériences, s’imposent à vous inopinément. Cela arrive souvent d’une manière tout à fait anodine et d’autant plus efficace. On croit faire soi-même l’expérience que dans la philosophie « on n’aboutit à rien », qu’ « on ne peut rien en faire »; et il est facile d’en entendre confirmation. Ces deux lieux communs, qui ont surtout cours dans les milieux de l’enseignement et de la recherche scientifiques, sont l’expression de constatations qui ont incontestablement leur justesse (Richtigkeit). En essayant de prouver que finalement « on aboutit tout de même à quelque chose », on ne fait qu’accroître et fortifier la méprise régnante, qui consiste dans l’opinion préconçue que la philosophie peut être estimée selon les critères courants auxquels on se réfère pour juger si une bicyclette est utilisable, ou si les bains d’une station thermale sont efficaces.

C’est tout à fait juste et parfaitement dans l’ordre : « on ne peut rien faire avec la philosophie ». L’erreur est seulement de tenir ainsi l’affaire pour jugée. Une petite considération supplémentaire s’impose encore en effet, sous forme d’une riposte demandant si, étant entendu que nous, nous ne pouvons rien en faire, ce n’est pas finalement la philosophie (25) qui fait quelque chose de nous, à supposer que nous nous engagions en elle. When we mention and correct both of these misinterpretations, we cannot intend that you should now come at one stroke into a clear relation with philosophy. But you should be mindful and on your guard, precisely when you are attacked unawares by the most standard judgments and even by purported experiences. This often happens in a way that seems entirely innocuous and is quickly convincing. One believes that one has had the experience oneself, and readily hears it confirmed: “nothing comes” of philosophy; “you can’t do anything with it.” These two turns of phrase, which are especially current among teachers and researchers in the sciences, express observations that have their indisputable correctness. When one attempts to prove that, to the contrary, something does after all “come” of philosophy, one merely intensifies and secures the prevailing misinterpretation, which consists in the prejudice that one can evaluate philosophy according to everyday standards that one would otherwise employ to judge the utility of bicycles or the effectiveness of mineral baths.

It is entirely correct and completely in order to say, “You can’t do anything with philosophy.” The only mistake is to believe that with this, the judgment concerning philosophy is at an end. For a little epilogue arises in the form of a counter-question: even if we can’t do anything with it, may Not philosophy in the end do something with us , provided that we engage ourselves with it? Let that suffice for us as an explication of what philosophy is not. [GA40FP:13-14]

Die Erwähnung und Berichtigung der beiden genannten Mißdeutungen kann Nicht Bewirken Wollen, daß Sie nun mit (14) einem Schlag in ein klares Verhältnis zur Philosophie kommen. Aber Sie sollen bedenklich und stutzig Werden, gerade wenn die geläufigsten Urteile und sogar vermeintliche Erfahrungen Sie unversehens überfallen. Dies geschieht oft in einer ganz harmlosen und sich rasch durchsetzenden Weise. Man glaubt, Selbst die Erfahrung zu machen und hört sie leicht bestätigt: bei der Philosophie »kommt Nichts heraus«; »man kann damit nichts anfangen«. Diese beiden Redensarten, die besonders in den Kreisen der Lehrer und Forscher der Wissenschaften tunlaufen, sind der Ausdruck von Feststellungen, die ihre unbestreitbare Richtigkeit Haben. Wer ihnen gegenüber den Versuch Macht, zu beweisen, daß schließlich doch »etwas herauskomme«, der steigert und festigt nur die herrschende Mißdeutung, die in der Vormeinung besteht, man könne die Philosophie nach den Alltagsmaßstäben abschätzen, nach denen man sonst die Brauchbarkeit von Fahrrädern oder die Wirksamkeit von Heilbädern beurteilt.

Es ist völlig richtig und in der besten Ordnung: »Man kann mit der Philosophie nichts anfangen«. Verkehrt ist nur, zu meinen, damit sei das Urteil über die Philosophie beendet. Es kommt nämlich noch ein kleiner Nachtrag in der Gestalt einer Gegenfrage, ob, wenn schon Wir mit ihr nichts anfangen können, die Philosophie am Ende nicht mit uns etwas anfängt, gesetzt, daß wir uns auf sie einlassen. Das genüge für uns zur Verdeutlichung dessen, Was die Philosophie nicht ist. [GA40:13-14]
