En virtud del poder del temple fundamental , el (Dasein) del hombre es, por su esencia exposición (Ausgesetztheit) en medio del ente manifiesto en totalidad, una exposición que el Dasein tiene que asumir, para que en ella — a su vez — asuma la salvaguarda de lo ente manifiesto en totalidad en tal exposición, y, conforme a tal asunción, él resguarde en sí, de una u otra manera, la posibilidad de una historia; es decir, que la cumpla o la desperdicie. El Dasein está encomendado al ente como tal, tanto al ente que es él mismo como al ente que él no es. La característica del Dasein humano reside en que él no sólo “es”, sino que debe hacerse cargo de una u otra manera, de cualquier ser llevado y conducido ante él. Incluso la indiferencia y el olvido sólo son modos en que el Dasein se encomienda al ser como tal. Este carácter fundamental del Dasein humano — que para él, en tanto que es en cada caso de una u otra manera, le va el ser — lo llamamos la preocupación . Esta denominación no se refiere a sentimientos conocidos en el diario vivir — entre ellos: miedo, angustia, preocupación y similares —, a un concepto metafísico para, desde ahí, establecer una visión del mundo, sino que es la experiencia fundamental de la esencia del Dasein histórico del hombre, la que, previamente, exige una nominación que, si se verifica, sólo puede ser concebida desde este origen.

Si consideramos la esencia del temple fundamental, la unidad de su poder transportante, insertante, inaugurante y fundante, entonces inmediatamente queda claro que, precisamente el temple, y a lo que se llama lo interno del hombre, son lo menos subjetivo de todo, pues el temple fundamental es, por el contrario, una transposición originaria a la amplitud del ente y la profundidad del Ser. El entrar-en-sí del hombre no significa aquí ocuparse y embobarse en sus vivencias privadas, sino que entrada significa salida a la exposición al ente patente. Sólo (128) porque el temple fundamental transporta y transpone originariamente, puede también constreñir y estrechar al Dasein al círculo del ente cotidiano más cercano, puede hacer resbalar al Dasein sobre la superficie del Ser; puesto que el temple fundamental es cada vez éste o aquel, no es una propiedad fija, sino un acontecimiento. Ciertamente el Dasein humano siempre está templado , sea al modo de una disonancia [Mißstimmung] o discordancia , o en la peculiar forma del temple que conocemos como el insípido, vacío y seco estar destemplado (Ungestimmheit), que expresamos al decir cotidianamente: “no tengo ganas”; la forma originaria del aburrimiento que, por su parte, puede también desarrollarse en un temple fundamental. Porque el Dasein, en tanto que es, está templado, por ello el temple sólo podrá ser reorientado (umgestimmt) cada vez por un contratemple (Gegenstimmung) y sólo un temple fundamental es capaz de suscitar a fondo una conversión de temple (Umstimmung), es decir, un cambio del Dasein equivalente a una completa mutación de la exposición al ente y, con ello, a una reacuñación del Ser.

No es un azar ni una mera distracción, ni siquiera una incapacidad de la mirada psicológica, que en el pensamiento moderno — incluso antes — las tonalidades afectivas sean valoradas como lo “subjetivo”, lo menos tangible y cada vez sólo concomitante. Esto ya no se debe a que la experiencia de la esencia del temple permanezca imposibilitada por largo tiempo, que se vea psicológicamente y se represente al hombre como un sujeto que, no se sabe bien por qué, además, se rodea de los así llamados objetos. Como si sujeto y objeto fueran bloques fijos disponibles, entre cuyos diferentes hilos tensados por detrás y externamente, estuvieran, entre otros, las tonalidades afectivas. Lo contrario es lo verdadero. La respectiva originariedad y poder del temple fundamental en cada caso dominante, inaugura previamente el ámbito al interior del cual, el hombre puede diferenciarse del ente no-humano, el ámbito al interior del cual recién pueden ser trazados los límites entre lo que debe llamarse lo subjetivo y lo objetivo, suponiendo que se pueda aún imputar un derecho fundado a esta diferenciación, una vez que es aprehendida la esencia del temple fundamental.

En el temple acontece la inaugurante exposición al ente. En esto reside a la vez, el que el Dasein del hombre ya está, en sí, transpuesto al Dasein de los otros, es decir, que él es como es, solamente en el ser-con  los otros. El Dasein es esencialmente ser-con-otro, para-otro y contra-otro. En conformidad con el mundo inaugurado cada vez en el temple fundamental dominante, en cuya patencia el Dasein se funda, éste encuentra su suelo y los ámbitos de sus decisiones y actitudes. Este ser-con-otro del Dasein, de acuerdo al carácter fundamental del existente, es en sí histórico, y — con ello — está ensamblado y atado a los poderes de la historia.

By virtue of the power of fundamental attunement, the Dasein of the human being is, in accordance with its essence, exposure in the midst of beings that are manifest as a whole, an exposure that Dasein must take on, so as at the same time to take on the preserving of those beings that are manifest as a whole within such exposure. In so doing, Dasein in one way or another conserves within it the possibility of a history—that is, fulfills or squanders this possibility. Dasein is delivered over to beings as such: both to that being that it itself is, and to those beings that it itself is Not. Therein lies the distinction of human Dasein: that it not only ‘is,’ but that all being must be taken up by it in one way or another, sustained and guided by it. Even indifference and forgottenness are merely ways in which Dasein delivers itself over to being as such. This fundamental trait of human Dasein—that it must, insofar as it is, be concerned in one way or another with being—we call care. In giving it this name, we are not raising to the level of a metaphysical concept or making into a worldview one of those feelings familiar in the everyday realm—fear, anxiety, care, and the like. Rather, it is the fundamental experience of the essence of the historical Dasein of the human being that in the first instance demands to be named and that, whenever it is accomplished, can be conceived only from out of this origin.

If we ponder the essence of fundamental attunement and its power to transport us out and transport us into, to open up, and to ground, then it immediately becomes clear that attunement is what is least of all subjective or a so-called interior of the human being; for fundamental attunement is, by contrast, the way in which we are originarily transposed into the expanse of beings and the depths of beyng. The human being’s going into him- or herself does not here mean staring at or monitoring one’s private lived experiences; rather, it means going out into one’s exposure to beings as manifest. Only because fundamental attunement originarily transports and transposes us can it also limit Dasein, restricting it to the sphere of those everyday beings that are closest to us, letting Dasein drift along on the surface of beyng. For fundamental attunement is in each case this or that attunement: not some fixed attribute, but a happening. Human Dasein is indeed always attuned, if only in the manner of a bad or disgruntled mood, or in the peculiar manner of that mood that is familiar to us as the dull, vacuous, and dreary lack of attunement, familiar to us in the everyday realm as that which we express in the statement “I’m not up for anything”—the primordial form of boredom, which for its part can unfold into a fundamental attunement. Because Dasein—insofar as it is—is attuned, for this reason an attunement can in each case be changed into a different one only by way of a counter-attunement. And only a fundamental attunement is capable of bringing about a change of attunement from the ground up—that is, a transformation of Dasein that amounts to a complete recreating of its exposure to beings, and thereby to a recoining of beyng.

The fact that, within modern thinking, and already prior to it, attunements are counted as something ‘subjective’—as merely accompanying us in each case and as what are least graspable—is no accident, nor a mere inattentiveness or even incapacity on the part of psychological inspection. This is the case if only because experiencing the essence of attunement remains impossible so long as one views the issue psychologically and portrays the human being as a subject that is, in addition, surrounded by so-called objects—though why, one really does not know. As though subject and object were fixed blocks lying present at Hand, between which, subsequently and in addition, various threads were stretched, including those of attunements. The opposite is true. It is the originary character and power at any given time of a dominant and prevailing fundamental attunement that first opens up that realm within which the human being can differentiate himself from nonhuman beings, that realm within which the borders can first be drawn between what is to be called subjective and objective—granted that one may still attribute a justified legitimacy to this distinction at all, once the essence of fundamental attunement has been comprehended.

In attunement there occurs the inaugural exposure to beings. This entails at the same time that the Dasein of the human being is in itself already transposed into the Dasein of others: that it is, as it is, only in Being with Others. Dasein is essentially being with one another, being for and against one another. In accordance with the world that is opened up at any given time in a dominant fundamental attunement, and in keeping with the manifestness of that wherein Dasein is grounded, it finds its basis and the realms of its decisions and of the modes of its comportment. This being with one another of Dasein is, in keeping with the fundamental character of Dasein, in itself historical, and thereby bound to the powers of history and configured by them.

Kraft der Macht der Grundstimmung ist das Dasein des Menschen seinem Wesen nach Ausgesetztheit inmitten des offenbaren Seienden im Ganzen, eine Ausgesetztheit, die das Dasein zu übernehmen hat, um darin zugleich die Bewahrung des in solcher Ausgesetztheit offenbaren Seienden im Ganzen zu übernehmen, gemäß welcher Übernahme es so oder so die Möglichkeit einer Geschichte in sich verwahrt, d. h. sie erfüllt oder verschleudert. Das Dasein ist dem Seienden als solchem – sowohl dem Seienden, das es Selbst ist, als auch dem Seienden, das es Nicht selbst ist – überantwortet. Darin liegt die Auszeichnung des menschlichen Daseins, daß es nicht nur „ist‟, sondern daß jegliches Sein von ihm so oder so übernommen, getragen und geführt sein muß. Auch die Gleichgültigkeit und Vergessenheit sind nur Weisen, Wie das Dasein dem Sein als solchem sich überantwortet. Diesen Grundcharakter des menschlichen Daseins – daß es ihm, sofern es ist, je so oder so um das Sein gehen muß – nennen Wir die Sorge. mit dieser Benennung wird nicht eines unter den im Alltag bekannten Gefühlen – Furcht, Angst, Sorge und dergleichen – zu einem metaphysischen Begriff hinaufgesteigert und daraus eine Weltanschauung Gemacht, sondern die Grunderfahrung des Wesens des geschichtlichen Daseins des Menschen ist es zuvor, die eine (142) Nennung fordert und die, wenn sie vollzogen ist, auch nur aus diesem Ursprung begriffen Werden kann.

bedenken wir das Wesen der Grundstimmung, die Einheit ihrer entrückenden, einrückenden, eröffnenden und gründenden Macht, dann wird sofort deutlich, daß gerade die Stimmung das am allerwenigsten Subjektive und sogenannte Innere des Menschen ist, denn die Grundstimmung ist dem entgegen die ursprüngliche Versetzung in die Weite des Seienden und die Tiefe des Seyns. In-sich-gehen des Menschen heißt da nicht, seine privaten Erlebnisse begaffen und betreuen, sondern Eingehen heißt Herausgehen in die Ausgesetztheit in das offenbare Seiende. Nur weil die Grundstimmung ursprünglich entrückt und versetzt, deshalb kann sie auch das Dasein einschränken und einengen in den Umkreis des alltäglichen nächsten Seienden, kann sie das Dasein hintaumeln lassen auf der Oberfläche des Seyns; denn die Grundstimmung ist je diese oder jene, keine feste Eigenschaft, sondern Geschehnis. Zwar ist das menschliche Dasein immer gestimmt, sei es auch nur in der Weise einer Mißstimmung oder Verstimmung, oder sei es in jener eigentümlichen Weise der Stimmung, die wir als das Fade und Leere und Trockene der Ungestimmtheit kennen, im Alltag bekannt als jenes, das wir aussprechen in der Rede: Ich bin zu Nichts aufgelegt – die Urform der Langeweile, die ihrerseits bis zu einer Grundstimmung sich entfalten kann. Weil das Dasein – sofern es ist – gestimmt ist, deshalb kann die Stimmung je nur durch eine Gegenstimmung umgestimmt werden, und eine Umstimmung von Grund aus vermag nur eine Grundstimmung zu erwirken, d. h. ein Wandel des Daseins, der gleichkommt einer gänzlichen Umschaffung der Ausgesetztheit in das Seiende und damit einer Umprägung des Seyns.

Daß im neuzeitlichen denken und vordem schon die Stimmungen als das »Subjektives das am wenigsten Greifbare und je nur Begleitende Gelten, ist kein Zufall, keine bloße Unachtsamkeit oder gar Unfähigkeit des psychologischen Blicks. (143) Dieses schon deshalb nicht, weil die Erfahrung des Wesens der Stimmung gerade so lange unmöglich bleibt, als Man psychologisch blickt und den Menschen als ein Subjekt darstellt, das – man weiß nicht recht weshalb – auch noch von sogenannten Objekten umstellt wird. Als seien Subjekt und Objekt feste, vorhandene Blöcke, zwischen denen hinterher und außerdem verschiedene Fäden gespannt werden, unter anderem auch Stimmungen. Das Gegenteil ist das Wahre. Die jeweilige Ursprünglichkeit und Macht der jeweils herrschenden Grundstimmung eröffnet erst den Bereich, innerhalb dessen der Mensch sich von nichtmenschlichem Seienden unterscheiden kann, den Bereich, innerhalb dessen erst die Grenzen gezogen werden können zwischen dem, Was subjektiv und Objektiv heißen soll, gesetzt, daß man dieser Unterscheidung überhaupt noch ein begründetes Recht beimessen darf, sobald einmal das Wesen der Grundstimmung begriffen ist.

In der Stimmung geschieht die eröffnende Ausgesetztheit in das Seiende. Darin liegt zugleich, daß das Dasein des Menschen in sich schon versetzt ist in das Dasein Anderer, d. h. nur ist, wie es ist, im Mitsein mit den Anderen. Das Dasein ist wesenhaft Miteinandersein, Für- und Gegeneinandersein. Gemäß der jeweils in der herrschenden Grundstimmung eröffneten Welt, der Offenbarkeit dessen, worin das Dasein gründet, findet es seinen Boden und die Bereiche seiner Entscheidungen und Haltungen. Dieses Miteinandersein des Daseins ist gemäß dem Grundcharakter des Daseins in sich geschichtlich und damit an die Mächte der Geschichte gebunden und durch sie gefügt.
