E, no entanto, não se trata de uma espécie de retração ferida ou descontente; de uma rejeição vazia e desesperada; ou mesmo de obstinação. Pelo contrário, este luto originário é a superioridade lúcida da simples bondade de uma dor grave — uma tonalidade afetiva fundamental. Ela abre o ser como um todo de forma diferente e essencial. Aqui devemos prestar atenção ao seguinte: a tonalidade afetiva, enquanto sintonia, permite a manifestação dos entes.

With regard to this and every fundamental attunement, however, it must be said from the outset that what is at issue here is Not some weak resignation that submerges itself in so-called feelings, a kind of sentimentality that merely ‘broods over’ the state of one’s own soul. In particular, this mourning is not some impotent collapse into oneself. Fundamental attunements—to use a customary distinction here—do not concern the soul, but the spirit. Pain and suffering in general are only by virtue of our enduring a conflict. Animals too can indeed endure pain and suffering, but their suffering and being in pain is not sorrow, just as stomach pains are not in themselves sorrow, nor the kind of pain that mourning is. Nor are these merely a ‘higher’ kind of feelings, but rather something essentially different.

Renouncing the calling of the gods of old is the decisiveness of a willingness to be deprived: “Nothing do I want to deny here, and ask nothing of you” (line 19). This decisiveness springs from the intimate superiority of the fundamental attunement of mourning. For this attunement makes all the many insignificant things a matter of indifference and maintains itself within the untouchability of one thing alone. And yet it is not some kind of wounded or disgruntled withdrawal; an empty, despairing rejection; or even obstinacy. Rather, this originary mourning is the lucid superiority of the simple goodness of a grave pain—a fundamental attunement. It opens up beings as a whole differently, and in an essential manner. Here we must pay heed to the following: Attunement, as attunement, lets the manifestness of beings occur.

Yet we must clarify still further the poetic configuration of the fundamental attunement. “The heart’s love has plaint” (line 5). According to ancient wisdom, love is a willing: namely, willing that the beloved, in his or her being, be such as they are, Stand firm in their essence. A willing—the heart’s love—“what else does it want / The holy mourning one?” (lines 5f.). The mourning is a holy one, not some arbitrary sadness about some individual thing; rather, the entire fundamental attunement is holy.

To attunement there belongs, on the one Hand, that which attunes (cf. below, on the ‘inner ground’ of attunement, p. 78ff.), then that which is attuned in the attunement, and finally the reciprocal inter-relatedness of that which is attuned and that which attunes. Here we must pay heed to the fact that attunement does not start from a subject and an object that lie independently present at hand, such that an attunement would impose itself between the two and go back and forth between subject and object. Rather, the attunement and its arising or receding is what is originary, first drawing the object into the attunement in its own particular way in each instance, and making the subject that which is attuned. Considered more profoundly, however, the subject–object relationship that is commonly represented is here altogether inadequate for comprehending the essence of attunement. That relationship Was conceived with respect to the representational relation between subject and object, so that the attunement, conceived as a feeling, is then merely something added on—a coloring.

Es muß aber Hier im voraus mit Bezug auf diese und jede Grundstimmung gesagt Werden, daß es sich hier Nicht handelt um schwächlich müdes Sichbaden in sogenannten Gefühlen, (82) um eine Sentimentalität, die nur den eigenen Seelenzustand „bebrütet‟. Im besonderen ist diese Trauer kein ohnmächtiges In-sich-zusammensinken. Die Grundstimmungen sind, um eine übliche Unterscheidung hier zu Gebrauchen, Nichts Seelisches, sondern etwas Geistiges. Der Schmerz und das Leiden ist überhaupt nur Kraft des Aushaltens des Widerstreites. Zwar kann auch das Tier etwas erleiden – leiden, aber dieses Leiden und Schmerzenhaben ist kein Leid, sowenig Wie Magenschmerzen an sich ein Leid sind und ein Schmerz wie die Trauer. Das sind auch nicht bloß „höhere‟ Gefühle, sondern etwas wesentlich anderes.

Das Verzichten auf das rufen der alten Götter ist die Entschiedenheit des Entbehrenwollens. »Nichts läugnen will Ich hier und nichts erbitten.« (V. 19) Diese Entschiedenheit entspringt der innigen Überlegenheit der Grundstimmung der Trauer. Denn diese rückt alle kleinen und vielen Dinge in das Gleichgültige und hält sich nur in der Unberührbarkeit des Einen. Doch ist sie kein verstimmtes und verletztes Sichzurück-ziehen, leer verzweifelte Abkehr oder gar Verstocktheit, sondern diese ursprüngliche Trauer ist die hellsichtige Überlegenheit der einfachen Güte eines großen Schmerzes – Grundstimmung. Sie eröffnet das Seiende im Ganzen anders und in einer wesentlichen Weise. Hier ist wohl zu bedenken: Die Stimmung als Stimmung läßt die Offenbarkeit des Seienden Geschehen.

Aber Wir müssen uns das dichterische Gefüge der Grundstimmung noch mehr verdeutlichen. »Des Herzens Liebe klagt« (V. 5). Liebe ist nach alter Weisheit ein Wollen, nämlich wollen, daß das Geliebte sei, in seinem Sosein, das es ist, seinem Wesen standhalte. Ein Wollen – des Herzens Liebe – »was will es anders / Das Heiligtrauernde?« (V. 5 f.) Die Trauer ist eine Heilige, also kein beliebiges Traurigsein über etwas Vereinzeltes, sondern die Ganze Grundstimmung ist heilig.

Zur Stimmung gehört einmal Jenes, was stimmt, das Stimmende (vgl. »innerer Grund‟ der Stimmung, S. 85 ff.), sodann (83) Jenes, das in der Stimmung gestimmt ist, und schließlich das gestimmte und stimmende wechselweise Bezogensein beider aufeinander. Dabei ist zu beachten, daß nicht zuerst ein Objekt und ein Subjekt Vorhanden sind und daß sich dann eine Stimmung zwischen beide zwängt und zwischen Subjekt und Objekt hin- und hergeht, sondern die Stimmung und ihr Hinauf- oder Hinabkommen ist das Ursprüngliche und nimmt erst je in ihrer Weise das Objekt in die Stimmung und Macht das Subjekt zum Gestimmten. Tiefer gedacht aber reicht das gemeinhin vorgestellte Subjekt-Objekt-Verhältnis hier überhaupt nicht zu, um das Wesen der Stimmung zu begreifen. Jenes Verhältnis wurde angesetzt in Rücksicht auf die vorstellende Beziehung zwischen beiden, und die Stimmung als Gefühl ist dann nur ein Anhängsel – die Tönung.
