Não há nada mais habitual do que a representação do homem como um indivíduo, que aparece entre outros, entre os seus semelhantes e entre as coisas. As fronteiras do homem decorrem na superfície da sua pele, ela é como que a demarcação do que é exterior e interior. Interiores são o coração, o cérebro, o diafragma, como o lugar do anímico, das vivências. Estas vivências acontecem. O homem tem vivências como tem pernas e estômago. Ele é acometido pelas vivências, anda à volta, e está sujeito às mais diferentes influências e efeitos, sobre os quais, por seu lado, actua. Ora, pode-se exprimir esta representação com mais espiritualidade, na medida em que se eleva o eu a personalidade ou se rebaixa a um “sujeito depravado”.

E determinante o modo de experiência aparentemente natural, em virtude da qual nos encontramos com seres vivos dotados de razão. Este modo de experiência tem uma certa legitimidade, mas é questionável se ela pode ser critério quando se trata de alcançar a essência específica do homem. A nossa reflexão já mostrou que este modo de experiência não é suficiente. (p. 228)

There is nothing more familiar than the idea of the human being as an individual who is found among others, among his equals, and among things. With this, the bounds of the human being run along the surface of his skin; it is, as it were, the boundary of that which is without and that which is within. Heart, brain, diaphragm are within as the seat of that which is mental, of the experiences (Erlebnisse). These experiences (Erlebnisse) take place. The human being has experiences (Erlebnisse), just as he has legs and a stomach. He is subject to experiences (Erlebnisse), runs around, and is, at the same time, subject to the most different influences and effects, to which he reacts for his part. One can now illustrate this idea in a more intellectual manner by raising the I into personality or lowering it to a “degenerated subject.”

The seemingly natural mode of experience is decisive, by virtue of which living beings endowed with reason encounter us. This mode of experience has a certain legitimacy, but it is questionable whether it can be decisive, if the kind of essence of the human being has to be found.
