Nós somos determinados, isto é, afinados por uma tonalidade afectiva em cada momento. Por muito que os puros encargo e missão tenham a sua determinação no trabalho e só nele, e tal como o trabalho se estende do ter sido para o futuro, assim uma tonalidade afectiva fundamental (Grundstimmung) domina a totalidade do encargo, da missão e do trabalho. O caracter de terminado (Bestimmtheit) está, em cada caso, carregado de um estado afectivo (Gestimmtheit) e de uma tonalidade afectiva.

Costuma-se compreender as tonalidades afectivas como um certo acréscimo às verdadeiras faculdades da alma, pensar e querer. Elas são como que a coloração e o timbre das vivências, certos estados complementares do lado dos afectos. Nesta concepção ignora-se a essência interna da tonalidade afectiva como também o seu poder. Surge o equívoco de que os designados caracteres fortes, os homens de acção, os homens de cabeça fria, seriam livres de tonalidades afectivas; que a tonalidade afectiva seria algo de feminino, ela seria (203) somente coisa das pessoas emotivas, que constantemente vão de uma tonalidade afectiva a outra e delas estão sempre dependentes.

Também aqui deparamos com o facto de que a essência das características fundamentais do homem são desvalorizadas como a in-essência. Não é apenas o homem inconstante que está dependente da tonalidade afectiva, mas também e precisamente o grande homem. É certo que este está intrinsecamente estruturado pelas grandiosas tonalidades afectivas fundamentais e é por elas conduzido, pelo contrário, o homem insignificante é dirigido por tonalidades afectivas menores a que chamamos caprichos. A diferença entre grandiosas e menores tonalidades afectivas reside em que as tonalidades afectivas grandiosas quanto maiores são, mais actuam de modo encoberto. Elas tornam-se tanto mais poderosas quanto se tornam patentes na criação própria de uma acção, de uma obra. Uma grande obra só é possível a partir de uma tonalidade afectiva fundamental e, em última análise, da tonalidade afectiva fundamental de um povo. Também a grande arte só é possível quando ela nasce a partir de uma tonalidade afectiva fundamental. Enquanto a grande tonalidade afectiva está encerrada no homem ou silenciosa na grande obra, a pequena tonalidade afectiva expõe-se continuamente, seja em lamentações ou em insípida alegria.

As tonalidades afectivas não são um simples rescaldo na nossa vida anímica, mas são acontecimentos fundamentais do poder do tempo, nos quais o nosso Dasein está originariamente. As tonalidades afectivas fundamentais são aquelas devido às quais nós, a partir da nossa essência, nos abrimos ou também nos fechamos ao ente, do modo mais profundo, mais vasto e mais originário possível. O nosso ser determinado é determinado, de cada vez, no caracter de determinado das duas determinações indicadas.

Este triplo sentido unitário daquilo a que nós chamamos determinação deixa-nos antes de mais experimentar encargo e missão, trabalho e tonalidade afectiva na sua unidade sóbria conforme ao acontecer e, com isso, também o tempo como poder originário, que harmoniza o nosso ser e em si o determina como acontecer. Deste modo, o tempo, experimentado como a nossa determinação, não é senão a estrutura do poder (Machtgefuge), a grande e única articulação (Fuge) do nosso ser como um ser histórico. Ele torna-se a unicidade histórica do nosso si mesmo. Assim, o tempo é o manancial do povo histórico e do indivíduo no seio do povo. A unidade desta tripla determinação é o caracter fundamental do acontecer.

We are determined, that is, at all times attuned-through by a mood (von einer Stimmung durchstimmt). Just as purely as mandate and mission have their determination (Bestimmtheit) in labor and only in it, just as labor, on its side, reaches over from beenness into the future, so a fundamental mood (Grundstimmung) dominates the whole of mandate, mission, and labor. Determinateness (Bestimmtheit) is respectively in an attunement (Gestimmtheit) and a mood (Stimmung) that carries it.

One usually conceives moods as (a) certain addition to the proper mental faculties, thinking and willing. They are, as it were, coloring and shading of the experiences (Erlebnisse), certain accompanying states toward the cast of mind. In this conception, one misjudges the (108) inner essence of the mood as well as its power. The misunderstanding arises that the so-called strong-willed human beings; the doers, the cold-thinking humans, are exempt from moods; that the mood is something feminine, (that) it is only the business of so-called moody fellows, who continuously go from one mood into another and are always dependent on that.

Here too, we come across the fact that the essence of essentially human distinctions is assessed according to the ««essence. It is Not only the unstable human being who is dependent on moods, but also and precisely the great one; this one is certainly internally fitted and led by great moods; the small human, in contrast, by small moods, which we call humors. The difference between great and small moods lies in the fact that great fundamental moods, the more powerful they are, the more concealed they work. They are all the more powerful, if they make themselves manifest in the own creation of a deed, of a work. A great work is only possible from the fundamental mood, ultimately from the fundamental mood of a Volk. Great art too is only possible, if it arises from a fundamental mood. While the great mood is locked in the human being or silent in the great work, the small mood continually displays itself, be it in wretchedness or dull boisterousness.

Moods are no mere infusion in our mental life, but are fundamental events of the power of time in which our Dasein is original. Moods are that by virtue of which we open or also lock ourselves to beings in the deepest and broadest and most original manner from out of our essence. Our being-determined is at all times attuned in the determinateness of the two named determinations.

This threefold-unified sense of that which we name determination lets us experience mandate and mission, labor and mood, first in their unity, which is in the manner of a happening, (and) with this, time too as original power, which fits (fügt) together and in itself determines our being as happening. Time is, thus, experienced as our determination, nothing other than the power-jointure (Machtgefuge), the great and sole joint (Fuge) of our being as an historical one. It becomes the historical singularity of our self. Thus, time is the fountain of the historical Volk and of the individuals in the Volk. The unity of this threefold determination is the fundamental-character of the happening.

So rein Auftrag und Sendung in der Arbeit ihre Bestimmtheit Haben und allein in ihr, so Wie die Arbeit ihrerseits aus der Gewesenheit in die Zukunft übergreift, so beherrscht eine Grundstimmung das Ganze von Auftrag, Sendung und Arbeit. Bestimmtheit ist jeweils in einer sie tragenden Bestimmtheit und Stimmung.

Stimmungen pflegt Man als gewisse Zugabe zu den eigentlichen Seelenvermögen, denken und Wollen, aufzufassen. Sie sind gleichsam Färbung und Tönung der Erlebnisse, gewisse Begleitzustände nach der Gemütsseite hin. In dieser Auffassung verkennt man das innere Wesen der Stimmung wie auch ihre Macht. Es entsteht das Mißverständnis, die sogenannten Willensstärken Menschen, die Tatmenschen, die kalt denkenden Menschen, seien frei von Stimmungen; die Stimmung sei etwas Weibisches, sie sei lediglich die Sache von sogenannten Stimmungsmenschen, die fortgesetzt von einer Stimmung in die Andere kommen und davon immer abhängig sind.

Auch Hier stoßen wir auf den Tatbestand, daß das Wesen von wesentlich menschlichen Auszeichnungen nach dem Unwesen Bibgeschätzt wird. Nicht nur der haltlose Mensch ist von Stimmungen abhängig, sondern auch und gerade der große; dieser wird freilich von großen Stimmungen innerlich gefügt und geführt (150), der kleine Mensch dagegen von kleinen Stimmungen, die wir Launen nennen. Der Unterschied zwischen großen und kleinen Stimmungen liegt darin, daß große Grundstimmungen, je mächtiger sie sind, um so verborgener wirken. Sie sind um so mächtiger, wenn sie sich offenbaren in der eigenen Schöpfung einer Tat, eines Werkes. Ein großes Werk ist nur aus der Grundstimmung, letztlich aus der Grundstimmung eines Volkes möglich. Auch große Kunst ist nur möglich, wenn sie aus einer Grundstimmung erwächst. während die große Stimmung verschlossen im Menschen oder schweigend im großen Werk ist, trägt die kleine Stimmung sich fortgesetzt zur Schau, sei es in Jämmerlichkeit oder fader Ausgelassenheit.

Stimmungen sind kein bloßer Aufguß in unserem Seelenleben, sondern sind Grundgeschehnisse der Macht der Zeit, in denen unser Dasein ursprünglich ist. Die Stimmungen sind das jemge, Kraft dessen wir aus unserem Wesen heraus uns am tiefsten und weitesten und ursprünglichsten dem Seienden Öffnen oder auch verschließen. Unser Bestimmtsein ist in der Bestimmtheit der zwei genannten Bestimmungen jederzeit gestimmt.

Dieser dreifach-einige Sinn dessen, Was wir Bestimmung nennen, läßt uns allererst Auftrag und Sendung, Arbeit und Stimmung in ihrer geschehensmäßigen Einheit erfahren, damit auch die Zeit als ursprüngliche Macht, die unser Sein fügt und in sich als Geschehen bestimmt. Die Zeit ist so, als unsere Bestimmung erfahren, Nichts anderes als das Machtgefüge, die große und einzige Fuge unseres Seins als eines geschichtlichen. Sie wird zur geschichtlichen Einzigkeit unseres Selbst. So ist Zeit der Quelltrunk des geschichtlichen Volkes und des einzelnen im Volk. Die Einheit dieser dreifachen Bestimmung ist der Grundcharakter des Geschehens.
