É a questão do que é a filosofia. Esta questão e a questão sobre a verdade dependem da questão fundamental: o que é o homem?

A resposta para esta questão fundamental, costumamos ir buscar, hoje em dia, nas ciências como biologia, psicologia, antropologia, sociologia, tipologia etc. Estas ciências, todas elas juntas, nos dão muitas informações sobre o homem e nenhuma resposta, porque todas elas já não perguntam nem questionam o homem, por já se fundarem numa resposta bem-determinada, a saber: o homem é algo que se dá e existe entre muitas outras coisas, e que consta de corpo, alma, espírito, pessoa... É o que se divulga e sempre se apresenta. E tudo isto é correto, mas não é verdadeiro em sentido mais profundo.

Em todas estas disciplinas já está prelineado e previamente consignado um determinado modo de questionamento. E este modo de questionar é que, de antemão, já proporciona a resposta, isto é, já demarca um círculo bem-preciso de respostas. E mesmo depois de se terem elaborado e concluído, as respostas não vão além do que, antecipadamente, já tinham decidido sobre o homem.

O tipo de questionamento que aqui está, no fundo, deve ser sempre: o que é o homem? Na própria formulação da pergunta, a decisão já foi tomada: o homem é uma coisa dotada disto e daquilo, constituído desta e daquela maneira. Poder-se-ia até pensar que a questão não poderia ser diferente.

Todavia, a diferença é possível. Nós não perguntamos: o que é o homem?, mas quem é o homem? Também neste modo de perguntar, uma decisão já foi tomada; a saber, que o homem não é uma coisa, mas um si-mesmo; o homem é um sendo que está, em seu ser, entregue e confiado (224) a si mesmo para ser. É que o si-mesmo não se enquadra no âmbito das coisas dadas que se têm simplesmente à mão, mas o si-mesmo está sempre entregue e confiado a uma contínua escolha e decisão, que se há de suportar sempre e de assumir em qualquer condição.

O decisivo não é que o si-mesmo sabe de si mesmo, o decisivo é que este saber, no sentido da consciência de si, decorre e é apenas uma consequência do fato de, em sendo, estar sempre em jogo seu próprio ser.

Esta característica fundamental, de que é sendo que se decide o próprio ser, pertence-lhe e integra seu próprio ser. Nós designamos este modo de ser como cuidado. Este cuidado, no entanto, não tem nada a ver com qualquer impertinência e rabugice, mas designa o caráter e o traço fundamental do si-mesmo, de, em sendo, ter em jogo seu próprio ser. O como e a maneira de o si-mesmo ser depende e está entregue à escolha e ao envio do homem em cada homem.

Somente à medida que o ser é cuidado é que se torna possível um modo de ser no sentido de resolução, trabalho, heroísmo etc. Entretanto, por ter tais poderes, o homem também tem, por outro lado, as possibilidades de ingenuidade, atividade, covardia, escravidão, negociata etc. Não são suplementos e acréscimos. Somente onde houver atividade, haverá trabalho. Somente na base deste ser (de cuidado) o homem é um ser histórico. O cuidado é a condição de possibilidade para o homem poder ser um ser político. The question is what philosophy is. This question and the question of truth depend on the fundamental question: what is Man?

Today we are used to getting the answer to this fundamental question from sciences such as biology, psychology, anthropology, sociology, typology, and so on. These sciences, all together, provide diverse information about man and yet no answer, because none of them asks about man anymore, because they are already grounded on a quite definite answer, namely: man is something that is given among other things, something that consists of body, soul, spirit, personality . . . This is disseminated and expounded. All of this is correct, and yet, in the deepest sense, untrue.

A definite mode of questioning is already pre-delineated in these disciplines. Through this mode of questioning, the answer is already given in advance, that is, a definite range of possible answers is already demarcated. And no matter how far these disciplines may be developed, they will never get beyond what they have already decided about man in advance.

The way of questioning that lies at the foundation of these sciences can only be: what is man? The decision has already been taken in the question: man is something constituted in such and such a way. One might believe that the question cannot be posed in any other way.

Yet this is possible. We do Not ask, “What is man?” but “Who is man?” In this way of posing the question, a decision has also been taken, namely, that man is a self, not a present-at-Hand being but a being that is delivered over to itself in its Being. The self is not to be fit into the realm of present-at-hand things, but is delivered over to the constant choice and decision that it has to bear.

What is decisive is not that the self knows about itself, but that this knowing, in the sense of self-conscious knowing, is only a consequence of the fact that its own Being is an issue for this being.

This fundamental characteristic, that its own Being is an issue for it, itself belongs to the Being of this being. We designate this Being as care. This care has nothing to do with some sort of irritable surliness, but designates the fundamental characteristic of the self, that its Being is an issue for it. How—this is left to the choice and mission of man.

Only insofar as Being is care does a way of Being become possible such as resoluteness, labor, heroism, and so on. But because man has these possibilities, he also has, on the other side, the possibilities of innocuousness, busy-ness, cowardice, slavery, money-grubbing, and so on. These are not, as it were, regrettable additions. Only where there is busy-ness is there labor. Only on the basis of this Being (as care) is man a historical entity. Care is the condition of possibility for man’s ability to be a political entity. (GA36-37FP)

Es ist die Frage, Was die Philosophie sei. Diese Frage und die Frage nach der Wahrheit hängen von der Grundfrage ab: was ist der Mensch?

Die Antwort auf diese Grundfrage pflegen Wir uns heute zu holen aus den Wissenschaften Wie Biologie, Psychologie, Anthropologie, Soziologie, Typologie usw. Diese Wissenschaften alle zusammen geben vielfältige Kunde über den Menschen und doch keine Antwort, weil sie alle nach dem Menschen nicht mehr fragen, weil sie schon auf einer ganz bestimmten Antwort gründen, nämlich: Der Mensch ist etwas, was es unter Anderen Dingen auch gibt, was aus Leib, Seele, Geist, Person... besteht. Dieses wird ausgebreitet und dargelegt. Es ist dies alles richtig und doch im tiefsten Sinne unwahr.

Eine bestimmte Weise des Fragens ist in diesen Disziplinen bereits vorgezeichnet. Durch diese Weise des Fragens ist die Antwort im voraus schon gegeben, d. h. ein bestimmter Umkreis möglicher antworten bereits abgesteckt. Und wenn sie noch so weit ausgebaut Werden, sie werden über das, was sie im voraus schon über den Menschen entschieden Haben, Nicht hinauskommen.

Die Art des Fragens, die Hier zu Grunde liegt, muß Sein: Was ist der Mensch? Die Entscheidung ist in der Frage schon gefallen: Der Mensch ist etwas so und so Beschaffenes. Man könnte meinen, die Frage könne gar nicht anders gestellt werden.

Dies aber ist doch möglich. Wir fragen nicht: Was ist der (218) Mensch?, sondern: Wer ist der Mensch? Auch in dieser Fragestellung ist schon eine Entscheidung gefallen, nämlich daß der Mensch ein Selbst ist, nicht ein Vorhandenes, sondern ein Seiendes, das sich in seinem Sein überantwortet ist. Das Selbst ist nicht in den Bereich vorhandener Dinge einzuordnen, sondern es ist der ständigen Wahl und Entscheidung, die es zu tragen hat, überantwortet.

Das Entscheidende ist nicht, daß das Selbst um sich weiß, sondern dieses Wissen, im Sinne des selbstbewußten, ist nur Folge davon, daß es diesem Seienden um sein eigenes Sein geht.

Diese Grundcharakteristik, daß es ihm um sein eigenes Sein geht, gehört selbst zu seinem Sein. Wir bezeichnen dieses Sein als Sorge. Diese Sorge hat Nichts zu Tun mit irgendeiner Griesgrä-migkeit, sondern sie bezeichnet den Grundcharakter des Selbst, daß es ihm um sein Sein geht. Wie, das ist der Wahl und Sendung des Menschen überlassen.

Nur sofern das Sein Sorge ist, wird eine Seinsweise möglich im Sinne der Entschlossenheit, Arbeit, Heldentum usw. Weil der Mensch aber diese Möglichkeiten hat, hat er auf der anderen Seite auch die Möglichkeiten der Harmlosigkeit, Betriebsamkeit, Feigheit, Sklaverei, Geschäftemacherei usw. Das sind nicht etwa bedauerliche Zugaben. Nur wo Betriebsamkeit ist, gibt es Arbeit. Nur aufgrund dieses Seins (als Sorge) ist der Mensch ein geschichtliches Wesen. Die Sorge ist die Bedingung der Möglichkeit, daß der Mensch ein politisches Wesen sein kann.
