Ao perguntar o que a ideia suprema é em seu conteúdo e o que significa o bem, temos de nos desfazer de toda e qualquer representação sentimental, mas também de concepções tais como a que se tornou corriqueira através da moral cristã e, depois, na ética secularizada. ἀγαθός, bom, não tem, em sua origem, nenhuma significação moral.

O bem, para um grego, não é oposto ao mal ou, menos ainda, ao “pecaminoso”. Só há pecado onde houver fé cristã. Mas também o bem não é para ser compreendido no sentido atenuado, tal como: “é um bom homem” (mas um mau músico) num sentido inocente que as tias usam.

ἀγαθός é, quando dizemos, após uma discussão: está bem, a coisa vai ser feita (após uma decisão). O bom é o que impõe, se mantém, suporta, o que presta. Um par de bons esquis, pranchas que suportam peso. É o que requer e exige a suprema decisão, e a maior seriedade e nitidez da presença.

É sem esperança alguma pretender compreender a essência do bem a partir e pelo conceito cristão, mesmo que seja para dar um passo no sentido de compreender o conteúdo designado.

O significado da ideia do bem tem todo um outro sentido. Queremos examinar e percorrer o próprio Platão e perguntar o que é que ele, por sua vez, admite sobre o bem como a ideia suprema. Na próxima preleção vamos entrar no trecho final do livro VI (A República), a fim de esclarecer o sentido em que a essência da verdade e a ideia suprema, e com isso a essência do bem, convergem e coincidem.

If we ask for the content of what the highest idea is and what the good means, we must free ourselves from every sentimental notion, but also from conceptions that have become run-of-the-mill through Christian morality and then in secularized ethics. ἀγαθός, good, originally has no moral meaning.

The good, for the Greeks, is Not the opposite of the evil, much less of the “sinful.” There is sin only where there is Christian faith. But neither is the good to be understood in the feeble sense of “he’s a good person” (but a bad musician)—in an innocuous, ladylike sense.

ἀγαθός is when we say, as after a confrontation or discussion: good, the matter is settled (after a decision). The good is what succeeds, stands fast, holds up, what is fit for something. A pair of good skis, boards that hold something up. What demands the highest decision and the highest seriousness and intensity of Dasein.

It is hopeless to want to comprehend the essence of the good on the basis of the Christian concept—this concept will not take us one step closer to understanding what the good actually means.

The idea of the good has a completely different sense. We now want to look at Plato himself and ask how he, for his part, expresses himself regarding the good as the highest idea. In our next session we want to get into the closing section of book VI, in order then to make it clear in what sense the essence of truth coincides with the highest idea, and thus with the essence of the good.

Wenn Wir inhaltlich fragen, Was die höchste Idee ist und was das Gute bedeutet, so müssen wir uns freimachen von jeder sentimentalen Vorstellung, aber auch von Auffassungen, Wie sie durch die christliche Moral und danach in der säkularisierten Sittlichkeit Gang und gäbe geworden ist. αγαθός, gut, hat ursprünglich keine moralische Bedeutung.

Das Gute ist für den Griechen kein Gegensatz zum Bösen oder gar noch zum »Sündhaften«. Sünde ist nur da, wo es christlichen Glauben gibt. Das Gute ist aber auch Nicht in dem abgeschwächten Sinne zu Verstehen wie: »Er ist ein guter Mensch« (aber schlechter Musikant), in harmloser, tantenhafter Bedeutung.

αγαθός ist, wenn wir sagen, etwa nach einer Auseinandersetzung: Gut, die Sache wird Gemacht (nach einer Entscheidung). Das Gute ist das, was sich durchsetzt, standhält, aushält, was etwas taugt. Ein Paar gute Skier, Bretter, die etwas aushalten. Das, was die höchste Entscheidung und den höchsten Ernst und die Schärfe des Daseins verlangt.

Es ist hoffnungslos, das Wesen des Guten von dem christlichen Begriff aus begreifen zu Wollen; auch nur einen Schritt zu Tun, das zu begreifen, was damit inhaltlich gesagt ist.

Die Bedeutung der Idee des Guten hat einen ganz Anderen Sinn. Wir wollen uns Jetzt bei Platon Selbst umsehen und fragen, wie er sich nun seinerseits über das Gute als die höchste Idee ausläßt. (193) In der nächsten Stunde wollen wir auf den Schluß abschnitt des VI. Buches eingehen, um dann deutlich zu machen, in welchem Sinn das Wesen der Wahrheit mit der höchsten Idee und damit dem Wesen des Guten zusammenkommt.
