Ou será que a filosofia é de fato apenas uma ocupação talvez mais elevada, por que mais universal do espírito, um luxo e uma mudança, a que nós nos permitimos no interior do curso com frequência monotônico e cansativo das ciências?A filosofia é aquela ocasião por vezes útil de liberar o olhar cativo para uma região restrita e maximamente circunscrita de uma ciência para uma certa perspectiva ampla do todo universal? Pois o que significaria se disséssemos que o filosofar se lançaria de maneira questionadora para o interior da totalidade? Será que isso significa apenas que criamos para nós uma perspectiva, a fim de sermos colocados mais favoravelmente como espectadores, mais favoravelmente do que nas regiões particulares e com frequência corretas e por demais estreitas da ciência? Ou será que a afirmação de que o que está em questão na filosofia é a totalidade tem em vista ainda algo completamente diferente? Isso significa que o que está em questão para nós, para nós mesmos, é um ir às raízes? E, em verdade, não de tal modo que também aplicamos discussões e proposições filosóficas, depois de as termos supostamente compreendido, de maneira moral sobre nós e, assim, criamos para a filosofia um efeito ulterior edificante sobre nós? Por fim, só conceberemos o filosofar, se o questionamento, de acordo com o seu conteúdo de questão, segundo a dimensão de questão, for de tal modo que ele se remeta em si mesmo, não ulteriormente, para as raízes. Filosofia não é nenhum conhecimento teórico, ligado com uma aplicação prática, ela não é teórica e prática ao mesmo tempo, mas não é nem uma coisa nem a outra, ela é mais originária do que as duas, que, por sua vez, só caracterizam as ciências. Or is philosophy only a higher (because more universal) occupation of the spirit, a luxury and diversion from the often monotonous and arduous procedure of the sciences? Is philosophy an opportunity, of which we occasionally avail ourselves, to widen our view out from the narrow field of the particular sciences for a picture of the whole? For what did we mean when we said that philosophy inquires into the whole? Does this mean that we just create a vantage point for ourselves, so that we can be better placed as observers, better than in the all too-narrow regions of the particular sciences? Or does philosophy’s concern with the whole mean something else? Does it signify that it goes to our own roots'.’ And indeed, Not by occasionally applying to our own case, in a moral way, philosophical discussions and propositions which we have supposedly understood, thus gaining edification from philosophy, ultimately we only understand philosophy if the questioning goes to the root of what is questioned. Philosophy is not theoretical knowledge together with practical application, nor is it theoretical and practical at the same time. It is more primordial than either, for both of these pertain primarily to the particular sciences. [EHFIP:13-14]

Oder ist die Philosophie in der Tat nur eine vielleicht höhere, weil allgemeinere Beschäftigung des Geistes, ein Luxus und eine Abwechslung, die Wir uns gestatten innerhalb des oft eintönigen und mühseligen Ganges der Wissenschaften? Ist die Philosophie jene zuweilen brauchbare Gelegenheit, um den in einen engen und engsten Bezirk einer Wissenschaft gefesselten Blick zu befreien für eine gewisse Weite Aussicht auf das allgemeine Ganze? Denn Was heißt es, wenn wir sagten, das philosophieren Frage ins Ganze? Besagt es nur, daß wir uns eine Aussicht verschaffen, um als Zuschauer günstiger gestellt zu Sein, günstiger als in den besonderen und oft recht und allzu engen Bezirken der Wissenschaft? Oder meint dieses, daß es in der Philosophie auf das Ganze geht, noch etwas ganz anderes? Heißt es, daß es uns, uns Selbst, an die Wurzeln geht? Und zwar Nicht so, daß wir philosophische Erörterungen und Sätze, nachdem wir sie vermeintlich begriffen Haben, gelegentlich auch noch moralisch auf uns anwenden und so der Philosophie eine nachträgliche erbauliche Wirkung auf uns verschaffen? Am Ende begreifen wir das Philosophieren erst, wenn das Fragen seinem Fragegehalt, der Fragedimension nach so ist, daß es in sich selbst, nicht hinterher, an die Wurzel geht. Philosophie ist keine theoretische Erkenntnis, verbunden mit einer praktischen Anwendung, nicht theoretisch und praktisch zugleich, sondern weder das eine noch das Andere, sie ist ursprünglicher denn beides, welches beides wiederum nur die Wissenschaften kennzeichnet.
