Finitude não é nenhuma propriedade que se encontra apenas atrelada a nós. Ela é o modo fundamental de nosso ser. Se quisermos vir a ser o que somos, não podemos abandonar essa finitude ou nos iludirmos quanto a ela. Muito ao contrário, precisamos protegê-la. Esta guarda é o processo mais interior de nosso ser-finito; ou seja, nossa mais intrínseca finitização. Finitude só é no interior da verdadeira finitização. Nesta finitização, contudo, consuma-se por fim uma singularização do homem em seu ser-aí (Dasein). Singularização não diz, aqui, que o homem se calcifica em seu eu diminuto e ressequido, neste eu que se espraia junto a isto ou aquilo, que ele toma como sendo o mundo. Essa singularização descreve muito mais aquele ficar só, no qual todo e qualquer homem se vê pela primeira vez nas proximidades do que há de essencial em todas as coisas, nas proximidades do mundo. O que é esta solidão, na qual o homem sempre e a cada vez vem a ser como um único? (p. 7)

Finitude is Not some property that is merely attached to us, but is our fundamental way of being. If we wish to become what we are, we cannot abandon this finitude or deceive ourselves about it, but must safeguard it. Such preservation is the innermost process of our being finite, i.e., it is our innermost becoming finite. Finitude only is in truly becoming finite. In becoming finite, however, there ultimately occurs an individuation of Man with respect to his Dasein. Individuation — this does not mean that man clings to his frail little ego that puffs itself up against something or other which it takes to be the world. This individuation is rather that solitariness in which each human being first of all enters into a nearness to what is essential in all things, a nearness to world. What is this solitude, where each human being will be as though unique? (p. 6)

Endlichkeit ist keine Eigenschaft, die uns nur anhängt, sondern die Grundart unseres Seins. Wenn Wir Werden Wollen, Was wir sind, können wir diese Endlichkeit Nicht verlassen oder uns darüber täuschen, sondern wir müssen sie behüten. Dieses Bewahren ist der innerste Prozeß unseres Endlichseins, d. h. unsere innerste Verendlichung. Endlichkeit ist nur in der wahren Verendlichung. In dieser aber vollzieht sich letztlich eine Vereinzelung des Menschen auf Sein Dasein. Vereinzelung — das meint nicht dieses, daß der Mensch sich auf sein schmächtiges und kleines Ich versteift, das sich aufspreizt an diesem oder jenem, was es für die Welt hält. Diese Vereinzelung ist vielmehr jene Vereinsamung, in der jeder Mensch allererst in die Nähe zum Wesentlichen aller Dinge gelangt, zur Welt. Was ist diese Einsamkeit, wo der Mensch je Wie ein Einziger sein wird? (p. 8)
