A relação entre investigação positiva e metafísica não é coisa de uma atividade organizada nem de um encontro casual, mas é sim destino. O que significa sempre: ela é codeterminada pela prontidão interna para a comunidade recíproca. Toco neste ponto porque este estado de coisas é decisivo para a nossa universidade hoje. Há sinais característicos da falta de uma tal prontidão tanto para a investigação positiva quanto para a metafísica. No lado da filosofia, este sinal se mostra através daquele ar de suma sapiência, com o qual nos sentimos superiores por causa de um saber filosófico marcado por conceitos e fórmulas conceituais apenas ouvidos e retirados dos livros e com o qual tentamos também nos assenhorar de fora, de maneira pedante, de determinadas ciências. Porque o saber filosófico é mais universal, ele é supostamente superior. Mas este ar de suma sapiência característico da pretensão de tudo saber melhor não é nenhuma compreensão plenificada, alcançada através da luta pelas coisas mesmas. A este ar de (246) pretenso saber característico da pseudofilosofia corresponde no âmbito da investigação científica a obstinação no apelo aos assim chamados fatos, a incompreensão de que um fato por si não nos oferece nada – todo e qualquer fato conduzido ao campo de investigação é já transpassado por uma interpretação. Este ar de suprema sapiência da filosofia e esta teimosia das ciências provocam o aparecimento daquela pertinácia incurável dos discursos que passam um ao largo do outro, o surgimento daquela aparência de liberdade que entrega finalmente seu campo a qualquer um outro e que não é no fundo senão a incerteza inerente a tudo o que é precário e insuficiente. Este estado é característico da ciência atual e é seu perigo mais intrínseco. Um perigo tanto mais fatídico, uma vez que não é propriamente conhecido e entendido. Ao contrário, vê-se aí o começo de um estado ideal, segundo o qual a ciência se transforma em uma técnica que transcorre em si mesma e a filosofia em parte integrante da assim chamada formação universal. Está claro que não estamos assim preparados para uma comunidade real entre a metafísica real e a ciência real. É verdade que, durante algum tempo, pareceu que a ciência enquanto tal perdera seu solo e então vacilava. Foi a partir daí que se instaurou mesmo a palavra-chave: crise da fundamentação das ciências. No entanto, esta crise não consegue irromper seriamente e conquistar antes de tudo a duração necessária porque não nos deixamos absolutamente abalar de maneira tão ampla a ponto de receber a correspondente amplitude da visão para o descomunal e ao mesmo tempo elementar das novas tarefas. A ciência não se insere aí porque já está por demais entregue à utilidade prático-técnica. O que restou e resta mesmo é: a filosofia produz conceitos fundamentais e a ciência distribui fatos. Estes são os fundamentos (Grunde) existenciais essenciais para a relação entre ciência e filosofia. Estas são as razões (Grunde) que tornam difícil nos orientarmos, quando somos transpostos para o interior da necessidade de criarmos para nós a segurança indispensável quanto à relação entre ciência e filosofia.

The relation between metaphysics and positive research is Not a matter of an organized operation or prearranged coordination. Rather, it is a matter of fate, and this means that it is always determined in turn by an inner readiness for communal cooperation. I touch upon it here because this state of affairs is decisive for our universities today. There are characteristic signs on both sides that such readiness is lacking. On the part of philosophy this is represented by that peculiar hyper-sophistication which allows us to imagine ourselves to be in a superior position merely on the basis of a second-Hand philosophical knowledge of concepts and conceptual formulae that we have merely heard about or read in books, and which causes us to lecture the special sciences in a supercilious manner. Philosophical knowledge is supposed to be superior because of its more universal character. Yet this hyper-sophistication, this vacuous cleverness, is not a mature understanding that has been wrested from the matter itself. Corresponding to this hyper-sophisticated pseudo-philosophy, what we find in the field of research is a stubborn appeal to the so-called facts and an inability to understand that a fact yields nothing by itself, that every fact we can produce has always already undergone a process of interpretation. Between them, the hyper-sophistication of philosophy and the intransigence of the sciences create the hopeless situation in which both parties obstinately persist in talking past one another and foster the spurious freedom in which each eventually leaves the other to its own devices: Yet this freedom at bottom represents no more than the insecurity which belongs to everything that is inadequate and unsatisfactory. Such a state of affairs is symptomatic of contemporary science and represents its innermost danger. (191) And it is a danger all the more fatal because it is not properly recognized or understood. On the contrary, this situation is thought to herald an ideal state of affairs in which science becomes a self-enclosed technique and philosophy becomes another element within so-called general educational culture. It is obvious that we cannot possibly in this way prepare ourselves for any actual community between metaphysics and science as something actual. Admittedly, it seemed for a while that science itself Was becoming increasingly unstable and this gave rise to the slogan ‘the crisis of foundations in the sciences’. However, this crisis cannot break through in the serious and above all enduring manner that is required, because we are not sufficiently willing to let ourselves be shaken, so as to acquire the necessary range of vision for both the immensity and the elementary nature of the new tasks ahead. Science will not allow itself to enter such crisis because it is already much too preoccupied with the realm of practical and technical serviceability. This is how things have been up to now, and so matters Stand: one side provides the fundamental concepts while the other delivers the facts. These are the essential existentiell reasons behind the contemporary relation between science and philosophy. These are the reasons it is so difficult to find our way when confronted by the necessity of securing the relation between philosophy and science in the requisite manner.

Das Verhältnis von positiver Forschung und Metaphysik ist Nicht Sache eines organisierten Betriebs und der Verabredung, sondern Schicksal, d. h. immer: mitbestimmt durch die innere Bereitschaft zur wechselseitigen Gemeinschaft. Ith berühre das, weil dieser Zustand für unsere heutigen Universitäten entscheidend ist. es gibt für beide Teile charakteristische Zeichen des Fehlens solcher Bereitschaft. Das ist auf seiten der Philosophie jene eigentümliche Uberklugheit, mit der Wir aufgrund eines nur gehörten und angelesenen philosophischen Wissens um Begriffe und Begriffsformeln uns überlegen dünken und versuchen, von außen her bestimmte Wissenschaften zu schulmeistern. Weil das philosophische Wissen allgemeiner ist, deshalb ist es vermeintlich überlegen. Aber diese Oberklugheit des leeren Besserwissens ist kein gewachsenes (281) und aus den Sachen erkämpftes Verstehen. Dieser Überklugheit der Scheinphilosophie entspricht auf seiten der Forschung die Verstocktheit der Berufung auf sogenannte Tatsachen, das Unverständnis dafür, daß eine Tatsache für sich Nichts hergibt – jede Tatsache, die ins Feld geführt wird, ist immer schon durch eine Auslegung hindurchgegangen. Jene Überklugheit der Philosophie und diese Verstocktheit der Wissenschaften erzeugen jene heillose Hartnäckigkeit des Aneinandervorbeiredens, jenen Schein von Freiheit, die schließlich jedem Anderen Sein Feld überläßt, die aber im Grunde nur die Unsicherheit alles Mißlichen und Unzureichenden ist. Dieser Zustand ist für die heutige Wissenschaft kennzeichnend und ist ihre innerste Gefahr, die um so verhängnisvoller ist, als sie nicht eigentlich erkannt und verstanden ist. Im Gegenteil, Man sieht darin den Anfang für einen Idealzustand, wonach die Wissenschaft eine in sich ablaufende Technik wird und die Philosophie ein Bestandstück der sogenannten allgemeinen Bildung. Daß wir uns so nicht vorbereiten für eine wirkliche Gemeinschaft zwischen der wirklichen Metaphysik und der wirklichen Wissenschaft, ist klar. Zwar schien es eine Zeitlang, als komme die Wissenschaft als solche ins Wanken. Es hat sich daher auch schon das Schlagwort eingestellt: Grundlagenkrisis der Wissenschaften. Aber sie kann deshalb nicht im Ernst durchbrechen und vor Allem die nötige Dauer gewinnen, weil wir uns gar nicht so weit erschüttern lassen, um die entsprechende Blickweite zu bekommen für das Ungeheure und zugleich Elementare der neuen Aufgaben. Die Wissenschaft läßt sich darauf nicht ein, weil sie viel zu sehr schon an die praktisch-technische Dienstbarkeit ausgeliefert ist. Es ist dabei geblieben und bleibt dabei: der eine stellt Grundbegriffe her, der Andere liefert Tatsachen. Das sind die wesentlichen existenziellen Gründe für das heutige Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Philosophie. Das sind die Gründe, die es schwer machen, uns zurechtzufinden, wenn wir in die Notwendigkeit versetzt (282) ein/i, uns die nötige Sicherheit über das Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Philosophie zu verschaffen.
