“Diré de momento, para dar algo así como un primer vistazo de este asunto, que la noción de fuerza o poder, que los alemanas denominan Krafft y los franceses force, y a cuya explicación destiné la ciencia particular de la dinámica, proporciona mucha luz para comprender la verdadera noción de sustancia”.

Aquí Leibniz sólo afirma de entrada que el concepto de fuerza es constitutivo para la interpretación de la substancialidad de la sustancia, pero en este punto no arroja luz sobre la intrínseca relación entre el carácter de fuerza y la unidad de la sustancia, sino que se limita a una tarea previa: aclarar lo que se entiende por fuerza. Y, por supuesto, esto lo hace delimitándolo frente a los conceptos metafísicos fundamentales escolásticos de potentia nuda (pasiva), potentia activa y actio, que, por su parte, se remontan a las nociones aristotélicas de δύναμις, ἐνέργεια y ἐντελέχεια.

La teoría de la potentia pasiva y activa es un elemento doctrinal de gran importancia en la escolástica aristotélica en el que, en este momento, yo no puedo entrar con detalle. Esta distinción es la subdivisión de una distinción más general, que en cierto modo hemos ya conocido, en una dirección, bajo el nombre de essentia o realitas: la posibilidad en el sentido de aquello que constituye la esencia de una cosa, la hace posible en su entidad esencial, independientemente de que este posible se realice en algún momento. A esta posibilidad la escolástica la denomina también potentia objectiva (o metafísica); objectiva (100) en el antiguo sentido (que todavía se da en la realitas objectiva de Descartes): ob-jectum, lo contrapuesto —para el mero pensar e imaginar la posibilidad pura, la esencia de una cosa —  De esta potentia objectiva (possibilitas, essentia) hay que distinguir la potentia subjectiva; subjectum no en el sentido moderno, sino en el antiguo sentido: lo subyacente, lo subsistente por sí; por consiguiente, también la potentia physica. Ella es la facultad, la ontológica capacitas rei ad aliquam perfectionem seu ad aliquem actum.

(80) Here Leibniz at first only asserts that the concept of force is constitutive for the interpretation of the substantiality of substance. But he does Not bring to light the inherent connection between the characteristics of force and the unity of substance. He restricts himself to a preliminary task, – that of making clear what he understands by force. He does this by distinguishing it from the Scholastic metaphysical concepts o£ potentia nuda (passiva), potentia activa, and ’’actio,” which in tum go back to Aristotle’s discussion of δύναμις, ἐνέργεια, and ἐντελέχεια.

The theory of potentia passiva (passive power) and potentia activa (active power) is a large and important part of the doctrine of Aristotelian Scholasticism. We cannot go into it deeply here. This distinction is the subdivision of a more general distinction we have to some extent considered in another direction under the term essentia or realitas, namely, possibility in the sense of that which constitutes the essence of a thing, enabling the thing in its essential constitution aside from whether or not this possibility is ever actualized. The Scholastics called this possibility also potentia objectiva or metaphysica; “objective” in the old sense (as realitas objectiva is still for Descartes): ob-jectum, what stands opposite to oneself – for the mere thinking to oneself and construing for oneself pure possibilities, the essence of a thing. Besides this potentia objectiva (possibilitas, essentia) there is a potentia subjectiva; subjectum not in the modern sense but in the ancient sense of the term: what lies at the basis, is present by itself; and so it is also called potentia physica, physical power. It is the power, the ontological capacitas rei ad aliquam perfectionem seu ad aliquem actum (capacity of the thing for some completion or for some act).

Die Theorie von der potentia passiva und activa ist in der aristotelischen Scholastik ein großes und wichtiges Lehrstück, Worauf hier nicht ausführlich eingegangen Werden kann. Diese Unterscheidung ist die Unterteilung schon einer allgemeineren, die Wir in gewisser Weise in einer Richtung kennengelernt Haben unter dem Titel der essentia oder realitas: die Möglichkeit im Sinne dessen, was das Wesen einer Sache ausmacht, sie in ihrem Wesensbestand ermöglicht, abgesehen davon, ob dieses Mögliche je verwirklicht wird. Diese Möglichkeit nennt die Scholastik auch potentia objectiva (oder metaphysica); (100) objectiva im alten Sinne (wie auch noch bei Descartes’ realitas objectiva): ob-jectum, was entgegensteht – für das bloße Sichdenken und Ein-Bilden der reinen Möglichkeit, des Wesens einer Sache. Von dieser potentia objectiva (possibilitas, essentia) ist zu scheiden die potentia subjectiva; subjectum nicht im modernen, sondern im alten Sinne: das Zugrundehegende, für sich Vorhandene; daher auch potentia physica. Sie ist das Vermögen, die ontologische capacitas rei ad aliquam perfectionem seu ad aliquem actum.
