El término ‘facultad’ tiene un doble significado: por una parte, quiere decir la facultad de realizar; le corresponde la realización misma, el actus en el sentido de la actio. Y a este fenómeno, es decir, a la facultad de ejecutar, parece que ha de asignársele en primer lugar y sobre todo la expresión ‘facultad’; y naturalmente se encuentra en este fenómeno de la facultad el motivo primario para la construcción del concepto de posibilidad en general. La facultad, en otro sentido, es la facultad de padecer, es decir, el dejar-hacerse-algo: la facultad en el sentido de inclinación a...; la disposición. Le corresponde el actus en el sentido de forma, la efectividad. ‘Facultad’, como el término de lo que se deja que se le efectúe algo, parece que es un significado derivado.

En este punto se pone en claro que al doble concepto de potentia, facultad, le corresponde un doble concepto de actus. Tomás dice en el mismo lugar: Actus autem est duplex: scilicet primus, qui est forma; et secundus, qui est operatio. Pero el concepto de acto es doble: el ‘primero’ quiere decir el carácter de ser efectuado, (101) o mejor: la efectividad de algo, ‘forma’; el ‘segundo’ el acto como causar —de algo ya efectivo-; aquí, por tanto, la numeración obedece al asunto.

Al actus qua forma le corresponde la potentia pasiva; al actus qua actio, la potentia activa. Pero el tipo de correspondencia es distinto en ambos pares de conceptos. Sobre esto, dice Tomás (Summa theologica I, q. XXY a. 1, ad 1): Potentia activa non dividitur contra actum, sed fundatur in eo; nam unumquodque agit secundum quod est in actu. Potentia vero passiva dividitur contra actum; nam unumquodque patitur, secundum quod est in potentia. La facultad de ejecutar no se distingue del actus qua efectividad, o sea, no es algo independiente, sino algo que sólo puede ejecutar algo si ella mismo es efectiva; algo no puede ser lo que es si no es efectivo. Por el contrario, la facultad de convertirse en algo, el dejarse que le ocurra algo, se distingue de la efectividad; pues aquí lo que se hace efectivo depende propiamente de la constitución de aquello que permite que le ocurra algo. La disposición a... se distingue de lo que algo puede ser y llegar a ser en virtud de esta disposición. La disposición en sí no tiene necesidad de ser efectuada.

Éstas son distinciones importantes en la perspectiva ontológica general que durante mucho tiempo no han sido aceptadas ni interpretadas suficientemente. Hay que ver más allá de la forma escolar de una lista de distinciones.

Leibniz delimita su concepto de vis activa, de fuerza, en relación a esta distinción de la potentia activa y pasiva, o más precisamente, en relación a la potentia activa. vis activa y potentia activa parecen significar, de acuerdo con la palabra, lo mismo. Pero (op. eit; Gerh. IV 469):

Differt enim vis activa a potentia nuda vulgo scholis cognita, quod potentia activa Scholasticorum, seu facultas, nihil aliud est quam propinqua agendi possibilitas, quae tamen aliena excitatione et velut stimulo indiget, ut in actum transferatur.

“Pues se distingue (102) la vis activa de la mera facultad de producir, conocida por los escolásticos porque la facultad de producir o la capacidad de llevar a cabo no es más que la posibilidad inmediata de hacer, de efectuar que naturalmente necesita de un estímulo externo, algo así como un aguijón, para pasar al acto.” Por consiguiente, la potentia activa de la escolástica es un mero ser capaz de actuar y de tal modo justamente que este ser capaz de... esté cerca de efectuar pero que todavía no efectúa. Ella es una capacidad subsistente en lo subsistente, que todavía no ha entrado en juego.

Sed vis activa actum quendam sive έντελέχειαν continet, atque inter facultatem agendi actionemque ipsam media est, est conatum involvit. (Ibid.; cf. también, infra, nisus, inclinación.) “Pero la vis activa contiene un determinado efectuar ya efectivo, es decir, una entelequia, es algo intermedio entre la mera capacidad de efectuar que está en reposo y el efectuar mismo e incluye dentro de sí un conatus, un intento.”

En consecuencia, la vis activa es un cierto efectuar, pero, sin embargo, no es el efectuar en su auténtico operar; una capacidad, mas tampoco una capacidad en reposo. Lo que aquí Leibniz quiere indicar lo denomimanos tender a..., mejor todavía, para expresar el momento específico del efectuar ya en cierto modo efectivo: el impulsar, el impulso. No se quiere decir, por tanto, una disposición ni tampoco un proceso, sino el apoyarse a sí mismo; el interesarse-por-sí-mismo (como en el giro ‘le importa... el instarse a sí mismo.

Lo característico en el impulso es que él, por sí mismo, lleva a efectuar y esto no de forma ocasional, sino de modo esencial. Este llevarse a sí a... no necesita de un acicate que proceda de otro sitio. El impulso es el estímulo que, precisamente por su naturaleza, es estimulado por sí mismo. Pero en el fenómeno del impulso no se encuentra sólo que él, por decirlo así, lleve consigo por sí mismo la causa, en el sentido del desencadenante (103), sino que el impulso, en cuanto tal, está siempre ya desencadenado, pero de un modo tal que está todavía cargado, tenso. A esto corresponde el hecho de que el impulso pueda ser obstaculizado en su tender, pero no por ello es idéntico con la mera capacidad en reposo de efectuar. Sin embargo, la eliminación del obstáculo puede liberar el tender antes que cualquier otra cosa. El impulso no necesita, pues, de una causa extema que venga a él, sino que, al contrario, sólo de la eliminación de algún obstáculo subsistente, o, para utilizar una feliz expresión de Max Scheler: la desinhibición. Leibniz dice (ibíd.): Atque ita per se ipsam in operationem fertur; nec auxiliis indiget, sed sola sublatione impedimenti . La imagen de un arco tendido hace intuible lo que se quiere decir.

Después de esta explicación de la vis activa como impulso —traducirlo por ‘fuerza’ puede llevar a confusión porque precisamente por con facilidad suscita la representación de una propiedad en reposo-, Leibniz alcanza la determinación fundamental (470): Et hanc agendi virtutem omni substantitae inesse ajo, semperque aliquam ex ea actionem nasci. “Digo, por tanto, que esta fiieiza inhiere en toda sustancia (constituye su subs-tancialidad) y siempre da a luz un cierto efectuar”, ella es precisamente impulso, o sea, productiva; producere quiere decir: llevar afuera, generar desde sí y conservar en sí lo dado de este modo. Pero esta determinación como impulso vale también para la sustancia corpórea; en el choque recíproco de los cuerpos el impulso sólo es delimitado y restringido de varios modos. Esto lo pasaron por alto aquéllos —los cartesianos- essentiam eius (substantiae corporeae) in sola extensio... collocaverunt  (ibid.).

Todo ente tiene este carácter de impulso, está determinado en su ser como impulsante. Este es el carácter metafísico fundamental de la mónada, con esto todavía no queda determinada la estructura de este impulso.

The term “power” has a twofold meaning. It designates first the power to accomplish, the achieving itself, actus in the sense of actio. (81) The designation “power” seems to be attributed in the first place to this phenomenon, to the ability to accomplish. The primary occasion for developing the concept of possibility evidently stems from this phenomenon of power. Power in the second sense is the capacity to undergo, to allow something to be made out of itself. Power in this sense is an inclination towards, an aptitude. Its correlative term is actus in the sense of forma, actuality. “Power” as designating that which allows itself to be actualized as something seems to be a derivative meaning of the term.

The twofold concept of potentia, power, clearly corresponds to the twofold concept of actus. Thomas says in the same passage: Actus autem est duplex: scilicet primus, qui est forma; et secundus, qui est operatio [Act, however, is twofold: first act, of course, is form; and second act is activity]. The concept of act is twofold. “First” act denotes enactedness, or better, the actuality of something, forma. “Second” act denotes act as acting – by something already actual. The numerical order thereby reflects the order of the matter itself.

Potentia passiva corresponds to actus qua forma, and potentia activa corresponds to actus qua actio. But the sort of correspondence in both pairs of concepts differs. On this Thomas says in the Summa theologica I, q. xxv, a. 1, ad 1:

Potentia activa non dividitur contra actum, sed fundatur in eo; nam unumquodque agit secundum quod est in actu. Potentia vero passiva dividitur contra actum; nam unumquodque patitur, secundum quod est in potentia.

Active power is Not contrary to act, but is founded upon it, for everything acts inasmuch as it is actual; but passive power is contrary to act, for a thing is passive inasmuch as it is potential.

The power to accomplish is not distinguished here from actus qua activity. That is, power to accomplish is not something independent, but a thing can only actively accomplish when it is itself in actuality. Something can not be what it is if it is not actual. Power, on the contrary, as power to become something, to allow something to happen with itself, is distinct from actuality, for in this case something which becomes actual is particularly dependent on the disposition of that which allows something to happen to itself. The aptitude is distinct from that which is and can come to be on the basis of the aptitude. The aptitude itself requires no actualization.

These are important distinctions for general ontology, and they have long been inadequately interpreted and assimilated. It is important (82) to see beyond the Scholastic form of a mere list of distinctions.

Leibniz delineates his concept of active force (uis active) against this distinction between active and passive power. More exactly, he delineates it against active power. Vis activa and active power (potentia activa) seem literally to say the same. But:

Differt enim vis activa a potentia nuda vulgo scholis cognita, quod potentia activa Scholasticorum, seu facultas, nihil aliud est quam propinqua agendi possibilitas, quae tamen aliena excitatione et velut stimulo indiget, ut in actum transferatur. (C. IV, 469)

Active force differs from the mere power familiar to the Schools, far the active power or faculty of the Scholastics is nothing but an approximate possibility of acting, which needs an external excitation or stimulus, as it were, to be transferred into action. (L. 433)

The potentia activa of the Scholastics is merely a disposition to act, a disposition which is about to act but does not yet act. It is an existing capability in something existing, a capability which has not yet come into play.

Sed vis activa actum quendum sive entelecheia continet, atque inter facultatem agendi actionemque ipsam media est, et conatum involvit. (Ibid.; see also below for nisus, inclination.)

But active force contains a certain act or ivrekexeut and is thus midway between the faculty of acting and the act itself and involves a conatus. (L. 433)

The vis activa is then a certain activity and, nevertheless, not activity in its real accomplishment. It is a capability, but not a capability at rest. We call what Leibniz means here “to tend towards ...” or, better yet, in order to bring out the specific, already somewhat actual moment of activity: to press or drive towards, drive. Neither a disposition nor a process is meant, rather a “taking it on,” namely, a “taking it upon oneself.” What he means is a setting-itself-upon, as in the idiom “he is set on it,” a taking-it-on-oneself.

Of itself, drive characteristically leads into activity, not just occasionally but essentially. This leading into requires no prior external stimulus. Drive is the impulse that in its very essence is self-propulsive. The phenomenon of drive not only brings along with it, as it were, the cause, in the sense of release, but drive is as such already released. It is triggered, however, in such a way that it is still always charged, still tensed. Drive correspondingly can be hindered in its thrust, but it is not in that case the same as a (83) merely static capability for acting. Removing the hindrance can nevertheless allow the thrust to become free. Drive, accordingly, needs no additional cause from outside, but, on the contrary, needs only the removal of some existing impediment, or, to use Max Scheler’s felicitous expression, it needs “de-hindrance.” In the same article Leibniz says (ibid.): Atque ita per se ipsam in operationem fertur; nec auxiliis indiget, sed sola sublatione impedimenti (it is thus carried into action by itself and needs no help but only the removal of an impediment). A bent bow illustrates his meaning.

After this clarification of vis activa as drive – the translation “force” is misleading because it easily leads to the notion of a static property – Leibniz arrives at the essential Definition: Et hanc agendi virtutem omni substantiae inesse ajo, semperque aliquam ex ea actionem nasci; “I say that this power of acting inheres in every substance (constitutes its substantiality) and that some action always arises from it” It is drive and is productive. Producere means: “to lead forth,” to come out of itself and maintain the outcome in itself. This definition as drive applies also to corporeal substances. When bodies impact on one another, the drive only becomes variously limited and restricted. The Cartesians overlooked this qui essentiam ejus (substantiae corporeae) in sola extensione ... collocaverunt (ibid.) .

Every being has this character of drive and is defined, in its being, as having drive. This is the monad’s basic metaphysical feature, though the structure of drive has not yet been explicitly determined.

Dem actus qua forma entspricht die potentia passiva, dem actus qua actio die potentia activa. Aber die Art der Entsprechung ist bei beiden Begriffspaaren verschieden. Darüber sagt Thomas (Summa theologica I, q. XXV, a. 1, ad 1): Potentia activa non dividitur contra actum, sed fundatur in eo; nam unumquodque agit secundum qoud est in actu. Potentia vero passiva dividitur contra actum; nam unumquodque patitur, secundum quod est in potentia. Das Vermögen zu vollbringen wird Nicht gegen den actus qua Wirklichkeit unterschieden, d. h. es ist nicht etwas Unabhängiges, sondern etwas vermag nur zu vollbringen, wenn es selbst in Wirklichkeit ist; etwas kann nicht sein, was es ist, wenn es nicht wirklich ist. Dagegen wird das Vermögen, zu etwas erst zu Werden, das Geschehenlassen-mit-sich, gegen die Wirklichkeit unterschieden, denn hier hängt das, was wirklich wird, eigens ab von der Verfassung dessen, das etwas mit sich Geschehen läßt. Die Anlage für. . . wird unterschieden gegen das, was etwas aufgrund dieser Anlage Sein und Werden kann. Die Anlage selbst bedarf nicht der Verwirklichung.

Dies sind in allgemeiner ontologischer Hinsicht wichtige Unterscheidungen, die längst nicht zureichend interpretiert und auf genommen sind. Es gilt, durch die schulmäßige Form der bloß aufgereihten Unterscheidung hindurchzusehen.

Gegen diesen Unterschied der potentia activa und passiva, genauer: gegen die potentia activa grenzt nun Leibniz seinen Begriff der vis activa, der Kraft ab. Vis activa und potentia activa scheinen dem Wortlaut nach dasselbe zu bedeuten. Aber (a.a.O.; Gerh. IV, 469): Differt enim vis activa a potentia nuda vulgo scholis cognita, quod potentia activa Scholasti-corum, seu facultas, nihil aliud est quam propinqua agendi possibilitas, quae tarnen aliena excitatione et velut stimulo indiget, ut in actum transferatur. »Denn es unterscheidet sich (102) die vis activa von dem bloßen Vermögen zu wirken, das Man gemeinhin in der Scholastik kennt, weil das Vermögen zu wirken oder die Vollzugsfähigkeit Nichts anderes ist als die nahe Möglichkeit des Tuns, des Vollbringens, die freilich noch einer fremden Anregung, gleichsam eines Stachels bedarf, um in ein Vollziehen überzugehen.« Die potentia activa der Scholastik ist also ein bloßes Imstandsein zum Wirken, so zwar, daß dieses Imstandsein zu . . . gerade nahe daran ist, zu wirken, aber eben noch nicht wirkt. Sie ist eine in einem Vorhandenen vorhandene Fähigkeit, die noch nicht ins Spiel getreten ist.

Also ist die vis activa ein gewisses Wirken und doch wiederum nicht die Wirkung im eigentlichen Vollzug, eine Fähigkeit, aber auch nicht eine ruhende Fähigkeit. Was Leibniz hier meint, nennen Wir Tendieren nach . . ., besser noch, um das spezifische, schon irgend wirkliche Wirkensmoment zum Ausdruck zu bringen: das Drängen, den Drang. Gemeint ist also weder eine Anlage noch ein Ablauf, sondern das Sich-angelegen-sein-lassen, sich selbst nämlich; gemeint ist das Sich-auf-sich-selbst-anlegen (wie in der Wendung »er legt es darauf an«), das Sich-selbst-anliegen.

Das Charakteristische am Drang ist, daß er von sich aus ins Wirken sich überleitet, und zwar nicht gelegentlich, sondern wesenhaft. Dieses Sichüberleiten zu . . . bedarf nicht erst eines von anderswoher kommenden Antriebes. Der Drang ist der Trieb, der eben seinem Wesen nach von ihm selbst an-getrieben wird. Im Phänomen des Dranges liegt aber nicht nur, daß er von sich her gleichsam die Ursache, im Sinne der Auslösung, (103) mitbringt, sondern der Drang ist als solcher immer schon ausgelöst, aber so, daß er dabei immer noch geladen, gespannt ist. Dem entspricht, daß der Drang in seinem Drängen zwar gehemmt sein kann, aber auch so ist er nicht etwa identisch mit der bloßen ruhenden Wirkfähigkeit. Gleichwohl kann die Beseitigung der Hemmung allererst das Drängen frei werden lassen. Der Drang bedarf sonach nicht einer noch dazukommenden fremden Ursache, sondern umgekehrt nur des Verschwindens einer irgend vorhandenen Hemmung, oder um einen glücklichen Ausdruck von Max Scheler zu Gebrauchen: der Enthemmung. Leibniz sagt (ebd.): Atque ita per se ipsam in operationem fertur; nec auxiliis indiget, sed sola sublatione impedimenti. Der Blick auf einen gespannten Bogen Macht das Gemeinte anschaulich.

Nach dieser Klärung der vis activa als Drang – die Übersetzung »Kraft« ist irreführend, weil gerade leicht die Vorstellung einer ruhenden Eigenschaft naheliegt – kommt Leibniz zur wesentlichen Bestimmung (470): Et hanc agendi virtutem omni substantiae inesse ajo, semperque aliquam ex ea actionem nasci. »Diese Kraft also, Sage Ich, wohnt jeder Substanz inne (macht ihre Substanzialität aus), und immer gebiert sie ein gewisses Wirken«, sie ist eben Drang, d. h. produktiv; pro-ducere heißt: hervor-führen, aus sich er-geben und als so gegebenes in sich behalten. Diese Bestimmung als Drang gilt aber auch für die körperliche Substanz; im Aneinanderstoßen von Körpern wird lediglich der Drang mannigfach begrenzt und beschränkt. Das übersehen jene, die Cartesianer, qui essentiam ejus (substantiae corporeae) in sola extensione . . . collocaverunt (ebd.).

Jedes Seiende hat diesen Drangcharakter, ist in seinem Sein als drängend bestimmt. Das ist der metaphysische Grundzug der Monade, Womit freilich die Struktur dieses Dranges selbst noch nicht ausdrücklich bestimmt ist.
