Ante todo debemos fijar dos puntos: 1.° La monadología, como interpretación de la substancialidad de la sustancia, determina el ser del auténtico ente. Por tanto, ella es ontología, metafísica. Y, por supuesto, metafísica general, ya que debe alcanzar un concepto del ser que ataña a todo ente auténtico, sea naturaleza física, viviente (plantas, animales), existente en el sentido del hombre, Dios; no obstante, debe, a la vez, hacer posible que el concepto de ser establezca las diferencias de los distintos entes en la unidad de un concepto general. 2.° Ahora bien, precisamente la esencia del conocimiento ontológico y su realización explícita en Leibniz es, con mucho, oscura y tentativa. Por consiguiente, su interpretación monadológica de la sustancia, justamente cuando sigue las tendencias más radicales, está destinada a volverse insensiblemente impenetrable y confundirse con otra. El pensamiento de Leibniz supone sólo una preparación para la distinción entre el saber metafísico y el saber no metafísico, que vendrá a la luz con Kant para después quedar de nuevo sepultada.

Recordemos una vez más el contexto de problemas que ha de guiamos. Buscamos, de la mano de la monadología, aclaración sobre el ser del ente (de la sustancia). Hasta ahora sabemos que el ente, acerca del que se juzga, el subjectum, está determinado por la totalidad de las notas características compatibles entre sí, mediante la co-pertinencia misma, la identidad en tanto que unidad de esta multiplicidad. ¿Se da un nexo entre la interpretación del ente como identidad y la del ente en tanto que mónada? ¿Cuál es? ¿Nos proporciona el descubrimiento de este nexo la comprensión de lo que buscamos: los fundamentos metafísicos de la lógica leibniziana y, de este modo, una comprensión ejemplar de cómo la lógica general está arraigada en la metafísica general?

Ya la expresión que Leibniz elige para designar la substancialidad de la sustancia es característica: ‘mónada’. La palabra griega μονάς quiere decir: lo simple, la unidad, el uno, pero también: lo individual, lo solitario. (90) Leibniz usó esta expresión sólo después de establecer su metafísica de la sustancia y, por supuesto, sólo después de 1696; La tomó de F. M. van Helmont o de Giordano Bruno. Lo que Leibniz quiere significar con ‘mónada’ reúne, por decirlo así, todos los significados griegos fundamentales. La esencia de la sustancia se encuentra en que ella es mónada, es decir, el auténtico ente tiene el carácter de la ‘unidad’ simple del individuo, de lo que es-por-sí. Anticipando, ‘mónada’ quiere decir lo que unifica de modo simple y originario, lo que individúa de antemano.

La dirección según la cual Leibniz trata de comprender la esencia de la sustancia de un modo nuevo, más originario y universal, se pone de manifiesto si recordamos los intentos inmediatamente anteriores de Descartes y Spinoza. Descartes dice en los Principia Philosophiae (I, 51): per substantiam nihil aliud intelligere possumus, quam rem quae ita existit, ut nulla alia re indigeat ad existendum . Lo característico de ella se ve en su no menesterosidad. En Spinoza se dice (Ethica I, def. 3): Per substantiam intelligo id, quod in se est, et per se concipitur: hoc est id, cujus conceptus non indiget conceptu alterius rei, a quo formari debeat . Según esta definición la sustancia se da en sí, pero también aquí lo esencial sigue estando determinado negativamente.

El darse-en-sí, el sustrato irreductible, pertenece al concepto de sustancia desde siempre, como pone de relieve el término hypokeimenon. Lo que añaden Descartes y Spinoza es esencialmente negativo o se refiere al modo de comprensión de la sustancia. Frente a esto, Leibniz quiere precisamente determinar de manera positiva la substancialidad de la sustancia. ¿En qué medida es la caracterización de la sustancia como mónada, como unidad’, esta interpretación positiva? Y ¿qué quiere decir aquí ‘unidad’?

Hemos escuchado que la monadología es una metafísica general; sin embargo, o precisamente por ello, debe estar orientada a todos los entes. Así también el problema candente del ser de la naturaleza, (91) tanto de la físico-inorgánica como de la orgánica, que era un problema candente en la época de Leibniz, es un hilo conductor de la concepción de la monadología, aunque no es el único, ni siquiera el definitivo en última instancia.

Two things must first be emphasized: 1) The monadology as an interpretation of the substantiality of substance defines the being of genuine beings. It is ontology, metaphysics. And it is general metaphysics, for a concept of being is sought that applies to every genuine being, whether physical nature, living beings (plants, animals), beings existing the way humans exist, Cod. At the same time the concept of being must make it possible to establish differences among the various beings in the unity of a general concept. 2) The very nature of ontological knowledge, and its explicit development by Leibniz, is still, by and large, obscure and groping. Thus his monadological interpretation of substance, wherever it follows up the more radical impulses, grows muddy and adulterated by the admixture of other things. Leibniz’s thought is only a preparation for the eventual separation of metaphysical from nonmetaphysical knowledge. The separation emerges with Kant, and then it is again completely buried.

I want to recall again the guiding context of the Problem. On the basis of the monadology, we want to know about the being of beings (of substance). We learned previously, however, that being, the subject about which judgment is made, is defined by the whole of mutually compatible marks, by their coherence, by identity as the unity of this multiplicity. Is there a connection, and what sort of connection, between the interpretation of being as identity and the interpretation of being as monad? Does discovery of this connection give us insight into what we seek: the metaphysical foundations of Leibniz’s logic – and with it a paradigmatic insight into the deep roots logic has in metaphysics?

The expression Leibniz chose to designate the substantiality of substance is already indicative: “monad.” The Greek word μονάς means the simple, unity, the one. But it means also: the individual, the solitary. Leibniz uses this term only later, after he had developed his metaphysics of substance, after 1696. He took the (73) term from Giordano Bruno via Francis Mercury van Helmont. All the Greek meanings are contained, as it were, in what Leibniz intends by the term. The essence of substance resides in its being a monad. Genuine being has the character of the simple “unit” of the individual, of what stands by itself. To anticipate, the monad is that which simply originally unifies and which individuates in advance.

The direction in which Leibniz attempts to conceive the nature of substance anew, and more primordially and universally, becomes clear if we recall the immediately preceding attempts by Descartes and Spinoza. In Principia Philosophiae Descartes says (I, 51): Per substantiam nihil aliud intelligere possumus quam rem quae ita existit, ut nulla alia re indigeat ad existendum (By substance, we can understand nothing else than the thing which so exists that it needs no other thing in order to exist). The characteristic of substance is seen in its needing nothing else. Spinoza has (Ethica I, def. 3): Per substantiam intelligo id, quod in se est, et per se concipitur: hoc est id, cujus conceptus non indiget conceptu alterius rei, a quo formari debeat . According to this Definition, substance is what remains in itself. But here too the essential is defined negatively.

“To reside in itself, to be irreducibly at the basis of,” belonged to the conception of substance since ancient times, as the designation ὑποκείμενον indicates. What Descartes and Spinoza add to this is essentially negative, or rather, relates to the manner in which substance is conceived. Leibniz, on the contrary, desires a positive definition of the substantiality of substance. To what extent does describing substance as monad, as “unit,” achieve such a positive interpretation, and what is meant here by “unit”?

We said monadology is general metaphysics. Precisely because of this, it must be oriented to all beings. Thus the burning problem in Leibniz’s era, the problem of the being of nature, of the physical-inorganic as well as the organic, becomes then a guiding clue for the development of the monadology – Not, to be sure, the only and ultimately decisive clue.

Zunächst müssen Wir uns ein Doppeltes einprägen: 1. Die Monadologie soll als Interpretation der Substanzialität der Substanz das Sein des eigentlich Seienden bestimmen. Sie ist also Ontologie, Metaphysik. Und zwar allgemeine Metaphysik, denn es soll ein Seinsbegriff gewonnen Werden, der jedes eigentlich Seiende betrifft, sei es physische Natur, Lebendes (Pflanze, Tier), Existierendes im Sinne des Menschen, Gott; zugleich freilich muß der Seinsbegriff ermöglichen, die Unterschiede dieser verschiedenen Seienden in der Einheit eines allgemeinen Begriffes festzulegen. 2. nun ist aber gerade das Wesen der ontologischen Erkenntnis und d. h. deren expliziter Vollzug bei Leibniz noch weithin dunkel und tastend. Daher muß seine monadologische Interpretation der Substanz gerade dann, wenn sie radikalere Tendenzen verfolgt, unter der Hand undurchsichtig werden und sich mit anderem vermischen. Zur Scheidung zwischen metaphysischem und nichtmetaphysischem Wissen ist Leibnizens denken erst eine Vorbereitung; ans Licht tritt sie bei Kant; dann wird sie wieder völlig verschüttet.

Sodann erinnere Ich noch einmal an den leitenden Problemzusammenhang: Wir Suchen an Hand der Monadologie Aufschluß über das Sein des Seienden (der Substanz). Wir wissen aber bisher: Das Seiende, Worüber geurteilt wird, das subjectum, ist bestimmt durch das Ganze der in sich verträglichen Merkmale, durch die Zusammengehörigkeit derselben, die Identität als Einheit dieses Mannigfaltigen. Besteht zwischen der Interpretation des Seienden als Identität und derjenigen als Monade ein Zusammenhang und welcher? Gibt uns die Enthüllung dieses Zusammenhanges die Einsicht in das, Was wir suchen: die metaphysischen Fundamente der Leibnizschen Logik – und damit exemplarische Einsicht in die Verwurzelung der Logik überhaupt in der Metaphysik überhaupt?

Schon der Ausdruck, den Leibniz zur Kennzeichnung der Substanzialität der Substanz wählt, ist charakteristisch: »Monade«. Das griechische Wort μονάς besagt: das Einfache, die Einheit, die Eins, aber auch: das Einzelne, das Einsame. (90) Leibniz gebraucht diesen Ausdruck erst später, nachdem seine Metaphysik der Substanz bereits ausgebildet war, und zwar seit 1696; übernommen hat er ihn von F. M. van Helmont bzw. Giordano Bruno. Was Leibniz mit Monade meint, faßt gleichsam alle griechischen Grundbedeutungen in sich zusammen: Das Wesen der Substanz liegt darin, daß sie Monade ist, d. h. das eigentlich Seiende hat den Charakter der einfachen »Einheit« des Einzelnen, Für-sich-Stehenden. Vorgreifend gesagt: die Monade ist das einfach, ursprünglich, im vorhinein vereinzelnd Einigende.

Die Richtung, nach der Leibniz das Wesen der Substanz neu und ursprünglicher und universaler zu fassen sucht, wird deutlich, wenn wir an die unmittelbar vorangegangenen Versuche von Descartes und Spinoza erinnern. Descartes sagt in den »Principia Philosophiae« (I, 51): Per substantiam nihil aliud intelligere possumus quam rem quae ita existit, ut nulla alia re indigeat ad existendum. In der Unbedürftigkeit wird Hier das Charakteristische gesehen. Bei Spinoza heißt es (Ethica I, def. 3): Per substantiam intelligo id, quod in se est, et per se concipitur: hoc est id, cujus conceptus non indiget conceptu alterius rei, a quo formari debeat. Nach dieser Definition ist die Substanz in sich bestehend; aber auch hier bleibt das Wesentliche negativ bestimmt.

Das In-sich-bestehen, unzurückführbar Zugrundeliegen wurde von jeher im Begriff der Substanz gedacht, Wie die Bezeichnung ὑποκείμενον zeigt. Was hinzugesetzt wird von Descartes und Spinoza, ist wesentlich negativ, oder aber es bezieht sich auf die Art der Erfassung der Substanz. Demgegenüber will Leibniz gerade die Substanzialität der Substanz positiv bestimmen. Inwiefern ist die Kennzeichnung der Substanz als Monade, als »Einheit«, eine solche positive Interpretation, und was besagt hier »Einheit«?

Wir hörten: die Monadologie ist eine allgemeine Metaphysik; gleichwohl oder gerade deshalb muß sie an Allem Seienden orientiert sein. So ist denn auch das zu Leibnizens (91) Zeiten brennende Problem des Seins der Natur, der physischanorganischen ebenso wie der organischen, ein Leitfaden für die Konzeption der Monadologie – allerdings Nicht der einzige und nicht der letztlich entscheidende.
