Puesto que hay ser sólo cuando ya el ente está en el ahí, en la ontología fundamental se encuentra latente la tendencia a una transformación metafísica originaria que es posible sólo cuando el ser es comprendido en su problemática total. La necesidad intrínseca de que la ontología vuelva a allí de donde partió se puede aclarar mediante el fenómeno originario de la existencia humana: que el ente ‘ser humano’ comprende el ser; en el comprender el ser se encuentra a la vez la realización de la distinción entre el ser y el ente; hay ser sólo cuando el Dasein comprende el ser. Con otras palabras: la posibilidad de que haya ser en el comprender tiene como presupuesto la existencia fáctica del Dasein, y ésta, por su parte, la subsistencia fáctica de la naturaleza. Precisamente en el horizonte del problema del ser planteado radicalmente se muestra que todo esto sólo es visible y puede ser entendido como ser cuando existe ya una totalidad posible de entes.

De aquí se sigue la necesidad de una peculiar problemática que tiene como tema al ente en su totalidad. Este nuevo planteamiento de la cuestión se encuentra en la esencia de la ontología misma y se produce a partir de su conversión, su μεταβολή. Designo esta problemática como metontología. Y aquí, en el círculo del preguntar metontológico-existencial, está también el círculo de la metafísica de la existencia (sólo aquí pueden situarse las cuestiones de la ética).

También las ciencias positivas tienen como tema suyo los entes, pero la metontología no es una óntica sumaria en el sentido de una ciencia general que reuniese empíricamente los resultados (200) de las ciencias particulares en una, digamos, imagen del mundo, para obtener de ella una concepción del (184) mundo y de la vida. En cierto modo, algo así está vivo en el Dasein precientífico, aunque esto tiene, sin embargo, otra estructura; la posibilidad y la estructura de la concepción natural del mundo es un problema por sí mismo. Que se intente una y otra vez un resumen del conocimiento óntico y que esto se presente como ‘metafísica inductiva’ indica un problema que continuamente se impone en la historia.

La metontología sólo es posible sobre el fundamento y en la perspectiva de la problemática ontológica radical y únicamente con ella; precisamente la radicalización de la ontología fundamental provoca la mencionada conversión de la ontología a partir de sí misma. Lo que aquí separamos aparentemente en diversas ‘disciplinas’ a las que les damos un rótulo es una sola cosa —del mismo modo que la diferencia ontológica es una, ¡el fenómeno originario de la existencia humana! —  Pensar el ser como ser del ente y captar de modo universal y radical el problema del ser quiere decir, a la vez, que el ente se convierte en tema a la luz de la ontología en su totalidad.

Since being is there only insofar as beings are already there (im Da), fundamental ontology has in it the latent tendency toward a primordial, metaphysical transformation which becomes possible only when being is understood in its whole problematic. The intrinsic necessity for ontology to back to its point of origin can be clarified by reference to the primal phenomenon of human existence: the being “Man” understands being; understanding-of-being effects a distinction between being and beings; being is there only when Dasein understands being. In other words, the possibility that being is there in the understanding presupposes the factical existence of Dasein, and this in turn presupposes the factual extantness of nature. Right within the horizon of the (157) Problem of being, when posed radically, it appears that all this is visible and can become understood as being, only if a possible totality of beings is already there.

As a result, we need a special problematic which has for its proper theme beings as a whole (das Seiende im Ganzen). This new investigation resides in the essence of ontology itself and is the result of its overturning (Umschlag), its μεταβολή. I designate this set of questions metontology. And here also, in the domain of metontological-existentiell questioning, is the domain of the metaphysics of existence (here the question of an ethics may properly be raised for the first time).

Positive sciences also have beings for their subject matter, but metontology is Not a summary ontic in the sense of a general science that empirically assembles the results of the individual sciences into a so-called “world picture,” so as to deduce from it a world-view and guide for life. Something of the sort is, in a certain way, current in prescientific Dasein, although the latter has a different structure; the possibility and structure of the natural world-view is a problem in its own right. The fact that attempts are repeatedly made to summarize ontic information and call it “inductive metaphysics” points to a problem that of necessity arises repeatedly throughout history.

Metontology is possible only on the basis and in the perspective of the radical ontological problematic and is possible conjointly with it. Precisely the radicalization of fundamental ontology brings about the above-mentioned overturning of ontology out of its very self. What we seemingly separate here, by means of “disciplines,” and provide with labels is actually one — just as the ontological difference is one, or the, primal phenomenon of human existence! To think being as the being of beings and to conceive the being problem radically and universally means, at the same time, to make beings thematic in their totality in the light of ontology. Da es Sein nur gibt, indem auch schon gerade Seiendes im Da ist, liegt in der Fundamentalontologie latent die Tendenz, zu einer ursprünglichen metaphysischen Verwandlung, die erst möglich wird, wenn Sein in seiner vollen Problematik verstanden ist. Die innere Notwendigkeit, daß Ontologie dahin zurückschlägt, von wo sie ausgegangen war, kann man am Urphänomen der menschlichen Existenz deutlich machen: daß das Seiende »Mensch « Sein versteht; in dem Verstehen von Sein liegt zugleich der Vollzug des Unterschiedes von Sein und Seiendem; es gibt Sein nur, wenn Dasein Sein versteht. mit Anderen Worten: die Möglichkeit, daß es Sein im Verstehen gibt, hat zur Voraussetzung die faktische Existenz des Daseins, und diese wiederum das faktische Vorhandensein der Natur. Gerade im Horizont des radikal gestellten Seinsproblems zeigt sich, daß all das nur sichtbar ist und als Sein verstanden Werden kann, wenn eine Mögliche Totalität von Seiendem schon da ist.

Hieraus ergibt sich die Notwendigkeit einer eigentümlichen Problematik, die nun das Seiende im Ganzen zum Thema hat. Diese Neue Fragestellung liegt im Wesen der Ontologie Selbst und ergibt sich aus ihrem Umschlag, ihrer μεταβολή. Diese Problematik bezeichne Ich als Metontologie. Und Hier im Bezirk des metontologisch-existenziellen Fragens ist auch der Bezirk der Metaphysik der Existenz (hier erst läßt sich die Frage der Ethik stellen).

Das Seiende Haben auch die positiven Wissenschaften zum Thema, aber die Metontologie ist Nicht eine summarische Ontik im Sinne einer Allgemeinwissenschaft, die die Ergebnisse der einzelnen Wissenschaften zu einem sogenannten (200) Weltbild empirisch zusammenstellt, um dann daraus eine Welt- und Lebensanschauung abzuleiten. Dergleichen ist in gewisser Weise im vorwissenschaftlichen Dasein lebendig, obzwar dies doch noch eine Andere Struktur hat; die Möglichkeit und Struktur der natürlichen Welt-Anschauung ist ein eigenes Problem. Daß man eine Summierung der ontischen Erkenntnisse immer wieder versucht und das als »induktive Metaphysik« ausgibt, deutet auf ein Problem, das sich in der Geschichte notwendig immer wieder vordrängt.

Metontologie ist nur auf dem Grunde und in der Perspektive der radikalen ontologischen Problematik und einig mit dieser möglich; gerade die Radikalisierung der Fundamentalontologie treibt den genannten Umschlag der Ontologie aus dieser selbst hervor. Was Wir hier durch »Disziplinen« scheinbar trennen und mit Titeln versehen, ist eines — so Wie eben die ontologische Differenz ein oder das Urphänomen der menschlichen Existenz ist! Das Sein als Sein des Seienden denken und das Seinsproblem radikal und universal fassen besagt zugleich, das Seiende im Lichte der Ontologie in seiner Totalität zum Thema zu machen. (p. 199-200)
