Descartes había intentado ver el ser de la naturaleza física, de la res corpórea, en la extensio. El carácter de extenso es el primer atributo, cualquier propiedad de la cosa física debe reducirse a él. Ahora bien, todas las determinaciones como determinaciones de los sucesos de la naturaleza se refieren a la modificación, al movimiento. Todo movimiento es motus localis, cambio de lugar y sólo así el movimiento es considerado científicamente. Y de este modo se hace accesible a la concepción científica supuestamente más estricta, la matemático-geométrica. Sobre todo fueron los cartesianos los que extendieron esta teoría a la naturaleza orgánica, a las plantas y animales; los últimos fueron vistos también como un entramado de meros cambios de lugar, o sea, puro mecanismo: los animales son como máquinas. Ya el hecho de poner de relieve este círculo del ente, la vida orgánica, pudo poner un límite a la ontología cartesiana de la naturaleza. Pero incluso dentro de la naturaleza físico-inorgánica ella se revela insuficiente. Descartes intentó expresamente excluir de la física el concepto de fuerza: ac de vi qua (motus localis) excitatur... non inquiramos (op. eit., I, 65). Con mayor precisión: Descartes no concibió ningún concepto de fuerza determinado físicamente, sino que con el término de vis pensaba en las ‘cualidades ocultas’ de la filosofía escolástica de la naturaleza.

En cambio, Leibniz prentendió que la pieza fundamental de la física matemática tenía que ser una dinámica. Pero de esta forma no se alcanzaba su auténtica intención filosófica. Esta, la ontológico-metafísica, va siempre unida, sin embargo, a la finalidad físico-óntica, sin una clara distinción de los ámbitos, de los modos de planteamiento de la cuestión y de la fundamen-tación. Si se quiere valorar el alcance de la tendencia a una dinámica en la física en relación a su importancia metafísica y su motivación, (92) entonces hay que darse cuenta de otra cosa, a saber: aquello que sólo la estructura monadológica pide también a la naturaleza física.

Descartes had attempted to see the being of physical nature, the res corporea, in extensio. Extendedness is the primary attribute, and all properties of the physical thing are supposed to be reducible to it. Now all features of natural happenings are, as such, related to change, to motion. All motion is motio localis, change of (74) place, and only as such is movement supposed to be considered scientifically. In this way motion becomes accessible to the supposedly most rigorous conception, that of mathematical-geometrical theory. The Cartesians applied this theory particularly to organic nature, to plants and animals. The latter were also regarded as a network of mere alterations of place; they were studied purely mechanically – animals as machines. The mere reference to this domain of beings could place limits on the Cartesian ontology of nature. But it is inadequate even within inorganic nature. Descartes had tried explicitly to exclude the concept of force from physics: ac de vi qua (motus localis) excitatur ... non inquiramus (Principia Philosophiae I, 65) (we shall best understand motion if we inquire only about locomotion, without taking into account the force that produces it). More precisely, Descartes did Not yet have a concept of physically determinate force, but under the term vis, force, he thought of the “occult qualities” of the Scholastic philosophy of nature.

Leibniz, on the contrary, intends dynamics to be the basic site for mathematical physics. But this observation does not touch on his authentic philosophical Intention. His metaphysical-ontological purpose always accompanies the physical-ontic intent without a clear division of domains, without difference in kind of Problem and proof. If one wishes to minimize the implications of the move toward dynamics in physics, regarding its metaphysical significance and intention, then something else must be considered, namely, that which requires also the monadological structure of physical nature.

Ausgedehntheit ist das primäre Attribut, alle Eigenschaften des physischen Dinges sollen sich darauf zurückführen lassen. nun beziehen sich alle Bestimmungen als solche des Naturgeschehens auf Veränderung, auf Bewegung. Schon der Hinweis auf diesen Bezirk des Seienden, das organische Leben, könnte der Descartesschen Ontologie der Natur eine Grenze setzen. Aber sogar innerhalb der physisch-anorganischen Natur ist sie unzureichend. Descartes hat ausdrücklich den Begriff der Kraft aus der Physik auszuschalten versucht: ac de vi qua (motus localis) excitatur. . . non inquiramus. (A.a.O. I, 65) Genauer: Descartes hat noch keinen physikalisch bestimmten Kraftbegriff, sondern dachte bei dem Titel der vis an die verborgenen Qualitäten« der scholastischen Naturphilosophie.

Leibniz dagegen zielt auf eine Dynamik als Grundstück der mathematischen Physik Selbst. Aber so wäre die eigentlich philosophische Absicht Nicht getroffen. Diese, die metaphysisch-ontologische, geht allerdings immer zusammen mit der physikahsch-ontischen Absicht, ohne klare Scheidung der Bezirke, der Art der Fragestellung und Begründung. Will Man die Tragweite der Tendenz auf eine Dynamik in der Physik hinsichtlich ihrer metaphysischen Bedeutung und Motivierung (92) abschätzen, dann ist ein anderes zu beachten, nämlich das, Was erst die monadologische Struktur auch der physikalischen Natur fordert.
