La pregunta fundamental de la filosofía, la pregunta por el ser, es en sí misma la pregunta, entendida correctamente, por el hombre; entendida correctamente, es una pregunta por el hombre, una pregunta que vive latente en la historia de la filosofía y, aunque siempre (21) se hará notar en ella, quiere ser sacada a la luz de un modo nuevo en cada momento. Con todo, lo que importa es plantear la pregunta por el hombre con la intención puesta en el problema del ser; pues entonces se está muy lejos de una ruidosa exhibición complacida de la propia vida anímica y la de los otros.

La pregunta filosófica fundamental por el hombre se encuentra antes de toda psicología, antropología y caracterología, pero también antes de toda ética y sociología. Que, allí donde haya estado más o menos viva esta pregunta, haya aparecido como consecuencia suya, lo que acabamos de citar y que incluso haya sido tomado esto por lo esencial, sólo pone de relieve una cosa: que esta pregunta, y con ella el problema fundamental de la filosofía, no es, y nunca será, fácilmente accesible. Por ello está siempre amenazada por la sofística. ¿Qué cosa más fácil que, de un modo cómodo e interesante, interesar al hombre por el hombre, enumerarle sus complejos, sus capacidades, sus puntos de vista, sus prejuicios y deficiencias y decirle que esto es la filosofía? Es decisivo que, en la pregunta fundamentalmente filosófica por el hombre, entendida correctamente, el hombre, en este sentido sofístico, queda desprovisto totalmente de importancia. La filosofía nunca se ‘ocupa’ del hombre en este sentido solícito en el que él nunca puede recibir suficiente importancia.

Uno de los errores fundamentales del momento presente consiste en creer que se obtiene una ‘profunda’ comprensión del hombre hurgando en sus bajos fondos. El Dasein humano alcanza profundidad sólo cuando en su existencia consigue primero elevarse sobre sí mismo: tender a sus límites. Sólo desde la altura de esta tensión hacia lo alto contempla su auténtica profundidad.

The basic question of philosophy, the question of being, is in itself, correctly understood, the question of Man. It is, correctly understood, a question about man which lives hidden in the history of philosophy and in this history will move onward, but which will have to be brought to light afresh in every moment. Yet the important thing is to raise the question of man in view of the Problem of being. Then the question is far removed from any noisy (17) self-importance concerning the life of one's own soul or that of others.

This fundamental philosophical question about man remains prior to every psychology, anthropology, and characterology, but also prior to all ethics and sociology. The fact that the aforementioned appear wherever this question is more or less explicitly alive, and are even taken for essential in its stead, only demonstrates one thing: that this question, and with it the basic problem of philosophy, is Not and never does become easily accessible. For this reason also it is constantly threatened by sophistry. What is easier than, in a comfortable and interesting way, to interest a human being in human beings, to enumerate for him his complexes, potentials, standpoints, one-sidedness, and failings, and to say this is philosophy? It is crucial that the human being, in this sophistical sense, become completely irrelevant in the rightly understood fundamental philosophical question about man. Philosophy never “busies” itself with man in this hustling sense in which man can never take himself to be important enough.

One of the basic errors of our times is to believe a “deep” understanding of the human being is to be obtained by groping around in trivial shallows. Human Dasein gains depth only if it succeeds for itself, in its own existence, in first throwing itself beyond itself — to its limits. Only from the height of this high projection does it glimpse its true depths. (p. 16-17)

Die Grundfrage der Philosophie, die Frage nach dem Sein, ist in sich Selbst die rechtverstandene Frage nach dem Menschen; es ist, rechtverstanden, eine Frage nach dem Menschen, die latent in der Geschichte der Philosophie lebt und in ihr sich (21) weiter bewegen wird, die aber in jedem Augenblick neu ins Licht gestellt sein will. Doch es kommt darauf an, die Frage nach dem Menschen in der Absicht auf das Problem des Seins zu stellen; dann ist sie weit entfernt von einer geräuschvollen Wichtigtuerei mit dem eigenen Seelenleben und dem der Anderen.

Diese fundamentalphilosophische Frage nach dem Menschen liegt vor aller Psychologie, Anthropologie und Charakterologie, aber auch vor aller Ethik und Soziologie. Daß überall, wo diese Frage mehr oder minder ausdrücklich lebendig wird, das Genannte in ihrem Gefolge auf taucht, ja sogar statt ihrer für das Wesentliche genommen wird, zeigt nur das eine: daß diese Frage — und damit das Grundproblem der Philosophie — Nicht und nie offen zutage liegt. Dafür ist sie auch ständig durch die Sophistik bedroht. Was ist leichter, als den Menschen in einer bequemen und interessanten Weise für den Menschen zu interessieren, ihm seine Komplexe, Vermögen, Standpunkte, Einseitigkeiten und Halbheiten vorzurechnen, und zu sagen, das sei die Philosophie? Es ist das Entscheidende, daß in der rechtverstandenen fundamentalphilosophischen Frage nach dem Menschen der Mensch in diesem sophistischen Sinne völlig belanglos wird. Philosophie »beschäftigt« sich nie mit dem Menschen in diesem geschäftigen Sinne, in dem er sich nie wichtig genug nehmen kann.

Einer der Grundirrtümer der Gegenwart hegt darin, zu meinen, ein »tiefes« erfassen des Menschen sei dadurch zu gewinnen, daß man in den seichten Untiefen herumwühlt. Tiefe bekommt das menschliche Dasein nur, wenn es ihm selbst in seiner Existenz gelingt, sich zuvor hoch über sich selbst — an seine Grenze zu werfen. Aus der Höhe dieses Hochwurfes erblickt es allein seine Wahre Tiefe. (p. 20-21)
