Podemos siempre, y con facilidad, traer ante nosotros y representarnos el ente de una determinada esfera. Podemos, como (38) se suele decir, pensar algo acerca de él. Pero ¿qué ocurre con el objeto de la filosofía? ¿Se puede representar algo así como el ser? ¿No nos mareamos al intentarlo? De hecho, estamos, de entrada, desconcertados y es como si pretendiésemos agarrar el vacío. Ente  — esto es algo, una mesa, una silla, un árbol, el cielo, un cuerpo, unas palabras, una acción — . Un ente sí, ¿pero el ser? Lo mismo ocurre con la nada. Y nada menos que Hegel dijo: ser y nada son lo mismo. ¿Es la filosofía como ciencia del ser la ciencia de la nada? Debemos, al comienzo de nuestra consideración, confesar sin ningún recato ni disimulo que con «ser», de entrada, no podemos pensar nada. Por otra parte, afirmamos asimismo que pensamos el ser continuamente. Incontables veces decimos todos los días, tanto en alto como en silencio para nosotros mismos: esto o aquello es tal o cual, aquello no es así, eso fue o será. En cada uno de los usos de un verbo hemos ya pensado el ser y lo hemos comprendido. Entendemos inmediatamente que hoy es sábado, que el sol ha salido. Comprendemos (verstehen) el «es» que usamos al hablar pero no lo comprendemos conceptualmente (begreifen). El sentido de este «es» nos permanece oculto. El comprender el «es» y, con ello, el ser en general es tan comprensible de suyo que pudo extenderse en la filosofía un dogma hasta hoy incontestado: el ser es el concepto más simple y el más comprensible de suyo; ni es capaz de determinación ni necesita de ella. Nos apoyamos en el sano sentido común del hombre. Pero siempre que se convierta al sano sentido común en la última instancia de la filosofía, debemos desconfiar de la filosofía. Hegel dice en Sobre la esencia de la crítica filosófica en general: «La filosofía es de acuerdo con su naturaleza algo esotérico, por sí misma ni está hecha para el pueblo ni es susceptible de ser adobada para él. Es filosofía únicamente porque se contrapone al entendimiento y, todavía más, al sentido común del hombre, que no es sino la visión limitada temporal y localmente de una generación de seres humanos; en relación con ésta, el mundo de la filosofía es en sí y por sí mismo un mundo trastocado (verkehrte Welt)». Las pretensiones y las pautas del sentido común humano carecen de toda validez y no representan ninguna instancia respecto de lo que es y de lo que no es la filosofía. (p. 38-39)

We can always easily bring forward and picture to ourselves some being belonging to any given domain. As we are accustomed to say, we are able to think something about it. What is the situation here with philosophy's object? Can something like being be imagined? If we try to do this, doesn't our head start to swim? Indeed, at first we are baffled and find ourselves clutching at thin air. A being — that's something, a table, a chair, a tree, the sky, a body, some words, an action. A being, yes, indeed — but being? It looks like nothing — and no less a thinker than Hegel said that being and nothing are the same. Is philosophy as science of being the science of nothing? At the outset of our considerations, without raising any false hopes without mincing matters, we must confess that under the heading of being we can at first think to ourselves nothing. On the other hand, it is just as certain that we are constantly thinking being. We think being just as often daily, on innumerable occasions, whether aloud or silently, we say (14) “This is such and such,” “That other is not so,” “That was,” “It will be.” In each use of a verb we have already thought, and have always in some way understood, being. We understand immediately “Today is Saturday; the sun is up.” We understand the “is” we use in speaking, although we do not comprehend it conceptually. The meaning of this “is” remains closed to us. This understanding of the “is" and of being in general is so much a matter of course that it was possible for the dogma to spread in philosophy uncontested to the present day that being is the simplest and most self-evident concept, that it is neither susceptible of nor in need of definition. Appeal is made to common sense. But wherever common sense is taken to be philosophy’s highest court of appeal, philosophy must become suspicious. In “Über das Wesen der philosophischen Kritik überhaupt” / “On the Essence of Philosophical Criticism”/, Hegel says: “Philosophy by its very nature is esoteric; for itself it is neither made for the masses nor is it susceptible of being cooked up for them. It is philosophy only because it goes exactly contrary to the understanding and thus even more so to ‘sound common sense,’ the so-called healthy human understanding, which actually means the local and temporary vision of some limited generation of human beings. To that generation the world of philosophy is in and for itself topsy-turvy, an inverted world.”]. The demands and standards of common sense have no right to claim any validity or to represent any authority in regard to what philosophy is and what it is Not. (p. 13-14)

Seiendes Vermögen Wir uns jederzeit und leicht aus irgendeinem Gebiet vorzugeben und vorzustellen. Wir vermögen, Wie wir zu sagen pflegen, uns dabei etwas zu denken. Wie steht es nun mit dem Gegenstand der Philosophie? Kann Man sich so etwas vorstellen wie Sein? Faßt einen beim Versuch dazu Nicht der Schwindel? In der Tat, wir sind Zunächst ratlos und greifen ins Leere. Seiendes  —  das ist etwas, Tisch, Stuhl, Baum, Himmel, Körper, Worte, Handlung. Seiendes wohl - aber Sein? Dergleichen nimmt sich aus wie das Nichts, - und kein Geringerer als Hegel hat gesagt: Sein und Nichts sind dasselbe. Philosophie als Wissenschaft vom Sein die Wissenschaft vom Nichts? Wir müssen uns beim Ausgang unserer Betrachtung ohne jede Vorspiegelung und Beschönigung eingestehen: Unter Sein kann Ich mir zunächst nichts denken. Andererseits steht ebensosehr fest: Wir denken das Sein ständig. Sooft wir ungezählte Male jeden Tag sagen, ob in wirklicher Verlautbarung oder stillschweigend: das und das ist so und so, jenes ist nicht so, das war, wird sein. In jedem Gebrauch eines Verbum Haben wir schon Sein gedacht und immer irgendwie verstanden. Wir Verstehen unmittelbar: heute ist Samstag, die Sonne ist aufgegangen. Wir verstehen das »ist«, das wir redend Gebrauchen, und begreifen es nicht. Der Sinn dieses »ist« bleibt uns verschlossen. Dieses Verstehen des »ist« und damit des Seins überhaupt versteht sich so sehr von Selbst, daß sich ein bis heute unbestrittenes Dogma in der Philosophie breit machen konnte: Sein ist der einfachste und selbstverständlichste Begriff; er ist einer Bestimmung weder (19) fähig noch bedürftig. Man beruft sich auf den gesunden Menschenverstand. Aber allemal, wenn der gesunde Menschenverstand zur letzten Instanz der Philosophie Gemacht wird, muß diese mißtrauisch Werden. Hegel sagt in »über das Wesen der philosophischen Kritik überhaupt«: »Die Philosophie ist ihrer Natur nach etwas Esoterisches, für sich weder für den Pöbel gemacht noch einer Zubereitung für den Pöbel fähig; sie ist nur dadurch Philosophie, daß sie dem Verstände und damit noch mehr dem gesunden Menschenverstände, worunter man die lokale und temporäre Beschränktheit eines Geschlechts der Menschen versteht, gerade entgegengesetzt ist; im Verhältnis zu diesem ist an und für sich die Welt der Philosophie eine verkehrte Welt.« Die Ansprüche und Maßstäbe des gesunden Menschenverstandes dürfen keine Geltung beanspruchen und keine Instanz darstellen bezüglich dessen, Was Philosophie ist und was sie nicht ist.
