(...) Na tentativa de esclarecer o ser, os gregos seguem na mesma direção que Kant, quando eles remontam ao λόγος. Ο λόγος possui o elemento peculiar de tornar manifesto, de descobrir ou descerrar algo; uma distinção que não foi feita nem pelos gregos nem tampouco pela filosofia moderna. Como comportamento fundamental da ψυχὴ, ο λόγος é um ἀληθεύειν, o tornar manifesto, que é (112) peculiar à ψυχὴ no sentido mais amplo possível ou ao νοῦς, termos que são mal compreendidos, se os traduzimos sem pensar como alma e espírito e os orientamos pelos conceitos correspondentes. A ψυχὴ fala consigo mesma sobre o ser, diz Platão, ela debate inteiramente consigo mesma o ser, o ser-outro, a mesmidade, movimento, quietude e coisas do gênero, ou seja, ela já compreende junto a si mesma coisas tais como ser, realidade efetiva, existência etc. Ο λόγος ψυχῆς é o horizonte, no qual todo procedimento que procure esclarecer algo do gênero do ser e da realidade efetiva tem de entrar. Toda filosofia, como quer que ela conceba o “sujeito” e o coloque no centro da investigação filosófica, recorre em meio ao esclarecimento dos fenômenos fundamentais ontológicos à alma, ao espírito, à consciência, ao sujeito, ao eu. A ontologia antiga tanto quanto a ontologia medieval não são, tal como a ignorância habitual acredita, uma ontologia puramente objetiva com o alijamento da consciência, mas o seu elemento peculiar é o fato de a consciência e o eu serem tomados como sendo no mesmo sentido que o elemento objetivo. Isso manifesta-se no fato de a filosofia antiga ter orientado sua ontologia pelo λόγος. Ao mesmo tempo, poder-se-ia dizer com uma certa razão que a ontologia antiga seria uma lógica do ser. Isso é correto, na medida em que o λόγος é o fenômeno que deve esclarecer o que significa ser. A “lógica” do ser, contudo, não significa que os problemas ontológicos seriam reconduzidos aos problemas lógicos no sentido da lógica escolástica. O recurso ao eu, à alma, à consciência, ao espírito e ao ser-aí é necessário por razões materiais determinadas.

(...) In their effort to elucidate being, the Greeks proceed in the same direction as Kant when they go back to the logos. The logos has the peculiarity of making manifest, either of uncovering or of disclosing something, between which two the Greeks distinguished as little as did modern philosophy. As basic comportment of the psyche, the logos is an aletheuein, a making-manifest, which is peculiar to the psyche in the broadest sense or to the nous—terms that are badly understood if they are thoughtlessly translated as soul and mind and oriented to the corresponding concepts. The psyche, says Plato, discourses with itself about being; it discusses being, otherness, sameness, motion, rest, and the like thoroughly with itself; that is, it already of its own self understands being, actuality, and the like. The logos psyches is the horizon to which every procedure that attempts to elucidate being and actuality and the like betakes itself. All philosophy, in whatever way it may view the “subject” and place it in the center of philosophical investigation, returns to the soul, mind, consciousness, subject, ego in clarifying the basic ontological phenomena. Neither ancient nor medieval ontology is, as the customary ignorance of them takes them to be, a purely objective ontology excluding consciousness; rather, what is peculiar to them is precisely that consciousness and the ego are taken to be in the same way as the objective is taken to be. Evidence for this is provided by the fact that ancient philosophy orients its ontology to the logos and it could be said with a certain propriety that ancient ontology is a logic of being. This is correct to the extent that the logos is the phenomenon that is supposed to clarify what being means. However, the “logic” of being does Not mean that ontological problems were reduced to logical problems in the sense of academic logic. Reversion to the ego, to the soul, to consciousness, to mind, and to the Dasein is necessary for specific and inherently pertinent reasons.

(...) Die Griechen gehen beim Versuch, das Sein aufzuklären, in dieselbe Richtung Wie Kant, wenn sie auf den λόγος zurückgehen. Der λόγος hat das Eigentümliche, offenbarzumachen, etwas zu Entdecken bzw. zu Erschließen, Was die Griechen sowenig wie die neuzeitliche Philosophie schieden. Der λόγος ist als Grundverhaltung der ψυχή ein ἀληθεύειν, das Offenbarmachen, das der ψυχή im weitesten Sinne oder dem νοὔς eigentümlich ist, welche Termini Man schlecht versteht, wenn man sie gedankenlos mit Seele und Geist übersetzt und an entsprechenden Begriffen orientiert. Die ψυχή spricht bei sich Selbst, sagt Plato, über das Sein, sie spricht bei sich selbst das Sein, das Anderssein, die Selbigkeit, Bewegung, Ruhe und dergleichen durch, d. h. sie versteht bei sich selbst schon dergleichen wie Sein, Wirklichkeit, Existenz usw. Der λόγος ψυχής ist der Horizont, in den jedes Verfahren, dergleichen wie Sein und Wirklichkeit aufzuklären, sich hineinbegibt. Alle Philosophie, wie immer sie das »Sub-jekt« auffaßt und ins Zentrum der philosophischen Untersuchung (104) stellt, rekurriert bei der Aufklärung der ontologischen Grundphänomene auf Seele, Geist, Bewußtsein, Subjekt, Ich. Die antike sowohl wie die mittelalterliche Ontologie sind Nicht, wie die gewöhnliche Unkenntnis meint, eine rein objektive Ontologie mit Ausschaltung des Bewußtseins, sondern das Eigentümliche ist gerade, daß das Bewußtsein und Ich im selben Sinne seiend wie das Objektive als seiend genommen wird. Das bekundet sich darin, daß die antike Philosophie ihre Ontologie auf den λόγος orientiert und man mit einem Gewissen recht sagen konnte, die antike Ontologie sei eine Logik des Seins. Das ist insofern richtig, als der λόγος das Phänomen ist, das aufklären soll, was Sein bedeutet. Die »Logik« des Seins besagt aber nicht, daß die ontologischen Probleme auf die logischen im Sinne der Schullogik zurückgeführt würden. Der Rückgang auf das Ich, auf die Seele, auf das Bewußtsein, auf den Geist und auf das Dasein ist aus bestimmten sachlichen gründen notwendig.
