Se o ser-aí mostra uma constituição ontológica totalmente diversa do ente presente à vista e se existir em nosso uso terminológico significa algo diverso de existere e existentia (εἶναι), então também se torna questionável se à constituição ontológica do ser-aí pode pertencer algo assim como coisidade, essentia, οὐσία. Coisidade, realitas ou quiditas é aquilo que responde à pergunta: Quid est res, o que é a coisa? Uma consideração rudimentar já revela: o ente que nós mesmos somos, o ser-aí, não pode ser de modo algum inquirido enquanto tal com a pergunta “o que é isso?” Nós só conquistamos um acesso a esse ente quando perguntamos: “Quem é ele?” O ser-aí não é constituído pela quididade, mas – se é que podemos cunhar essa expressão – pelo caráter-quem. A resposta não traz consigo uma coisa, mas um eu, um tu, um nós. Nós perguntamos, contudo, por outro lado: O que é esse quem e esse caráter-quem do ser-aí – o que significa o “quem” em sua diferença ante o quid anteriormente citado no sentido mais restrito da coisidade do ente presente à vista? Sem dúvida alguma perguntamos assim. Com isso, porém, apenas se anuncia o fato de esse quid, com o (178) qual também levantamos a pergunta acerca da essência do quem, não poder significar evidentemente o mesmo que o quid no sentido da quididade. Em outras palavras, o conceito fundamental da essentia, da quididade, torna-se efetivamente problemático em face do ente que nós designamos ser-aí. A fundamentação insuficiente da tese como uma tese ontológico-universal se torna visível. Se ela deve ter em geral um significado ontológico, então ela carece de uma restrição e modificação. Precisa ser mostrado positivamente em que sentido todo e qualquer ente precisa ser questionado sobre o seu quid, mas em que sentido um ente precisa ser inquirido por meio da pergunta quem. É somente a partir daqui que o problema da distinctio entre essentia e existentia se torna complicado. Não se trata apenas da questão da relação entre quididade e presença à vista, mas ao mesmo tempo da relação entre o caráter-quem e existência, e existência compreendida em nosso sentido como modo de ser do ente que nós mesmos somos. Concebida de maneira genérica, a tese de que a todo ente pertencem essentia e existentia mostra simplesmente o problema geral da articulação de todo ente em um ente que ele é e no modo como de seu ser.

Já mostramos anteriormente a conexão entre a articulação fundamental do ser e a diferença ontológica. O problema da articulação do ser em essentia e existentia, formulado escolasticamente, é apenas uma questão mais especial que diz respeito à diferença ontológica em geral, isto é, à diferença entre ente e ser. Agora se mostra que a diferença ontológica é mais complicada, por mais formal que essa diferença possa soar e se mostrar. Mais complicada, porque sob o título “ser” não se encontram agora apenas essentia e existentia, mas ao mesmo tempo o caráter-quem e a existência em nosso sentido. A articulação do ser varia de acordo com o respectivo modo de ser de um ente. Esse modo de ser não pode ser restrito à presença à vista e à realidade efetiva no sentido da tradição. A questão acerca da multiplicidade possível e, com isso, ao mesmo tempo a questão acerca da unidade do conceito de ser em geral se tornam prementes. Simultaneamente, a fórmula vazia para a diferença ontológica fica cada vez mais rica em termos de conteúdo de problema.

(179) De início, contudo, anuncia-se para nós o problema de que, além do ente presente à vista (presença à vista), há um ente no sentido do ser-aí que existe. Mas esse ente que nós mesmos somos já não se achava desde sempre conhecido na filosofia e até mesmo no conhecimento pré-filosófico? Pode-se fazer tanto barulho em torno do acento expresso no fato de que, além do ente presente à vista, também há o ente que nós mesmos somos? Todo ser-aí já sempre possui de qualquer modo, na medida em que é, um saber sobre si mesmo: todo ser-aí sabe que se distingue de um outro ente. Mós mesmos dissemos de qualquer forma que, na ontologia antiga, uma ontologia orientada primariamente pelo ente presente à vista, ψυχὴ, νοῦς, λόγος, ζῷή, βιος, alma, razão, vida no sentido mais amplo possível, eram termos conhecidos. Com certeza; mas precisamos levar em conta o fato de o conhecimento ôntico fático de um ente ainda não garantir a interpretação apropriada de seu ser. Em verdade, o ser-aí tem conhecimento do fato de que ele não é o outro ente que ele experimenta. Ao menos isso pode se mostrar como conhecido para o ser-aí. Isso não é conhecido de todo e qualquer ser-aí, porém, na medida em que, por exemplo, o pensamento mítico e mágico identifica a coisa consigo mesmo. Mas mesmo que seja conhecido para o ser-aí o fato de que ele mesmo não é um outro ente, ainda não reside aí o conhecimento explícito de que seu modo de ser seria um modo de ser diverso do modo de ser do ente que ele mesmo não é. Ao contrário, o ser-aí pode muito mais interpretar a si mesmo e ao seu modo de ser, tal como vimos a partir do exemplo da Antiguidade, ontologicamente com vistas ao ente presente à vista e ao modo de ser da presença à vista. A questão específica sobre a constituição ontológica do ser-aí é mantida de lado e confundida por múltiplos preconceitos que estão fundamentados na existência do próprio ser-aí. É isso entre outras coisas que a discussão da terceira tese deve tornar claro para nós. Essa discussão tem por meta sobretudo nos aproximar efetivamente do problema de uma multiplicidade de modos de ser, para além da unicidade daquilo que se mostra apenas como presença à vista.

If the Dasein exhibits an ontological constitution completely different from that of the extant at-Hand, and if to exist, in our terminological usage, means something other than existere and existentia (einai), then it also becomes a question whether anything like Sachheit, thingness, whatness, reality, essentia, ousia, can belong to the ontological constitution of the Dasein. Sachheit, thingness, whatness, reality, realitas, or quidditas, is that which answers the question Quid est res, what is the thing? Even a rough consideration shows that the being that we ourselves are, the Dasein, cannot at all be interrogated as such by the question What is this? We gain access to this being only if we ask: Who is it? The Dasein is Not constituted by whatness but—if we may coin the expression—by whoness. The answer does not give a thing but an I, you, we. But on the other hand we still ask: What is this who and this whoness of the Dasein—what is the who in distinction from the aforementioned what in the narrower sense of the reality of the extant at-hand? No doubt we do ask such a question. But this only shows that this what, with which we also ask about the nature of the who, obviously cannot coincide with the what in the sense of whatness. In other words, the basic concept of essentia, whatness, first becomes really problematic in the face of the being we call the Dasein. The inadequate founding of the thesis as a universally ontological one becomes evident. If it is to have an ontological significance at all, then it is in need of a restriction and modification. It must be shown positively in which sense each being can be interrogated regarding its what but also in which sense a being must be queried by the who-question. Only from here on does the Problem of the distinctio between essentia and existentia become complicated. It is not only the question of the relationship of whatness and extantness but at the same time the question of the relationship of whoness and existence (Existenz) —existence understood in our sense as the mode of being of the being that we ourselves are. Formulated more generally, the thesis that essentia and existentia belong to each being merely points to the general problem of the articulation of each being into a being that it is and the how of its being.

We have already pointed earlier to the connection between the basic articulation of being and the ontological difference. The problem of the articulation of being into essentia and existentia, formulated in Scholastic terms, is only a more special question touching on the ontological difference generally, the difference between a being and being. It now appears that the ontological difference is becoming more complicated, however formal this difference sounds and looks. More complicated because under the heading “being” we now have not only essentia and existentia but also whoness and existence in our sense. The articulation of being varies each time with the way of being of a being. This way of being cannot be restricted to at-hand extantness and actuality in the traditional sense. The question of the possible multiplicity of being and therewith at the same time that of the unity of the concept of being in general becomes urgent. Simultaneously, the empty formula for the ontological difference grows ever richer in the problems it contains.

First, however, one problem makes its claim on our attention: besides the extant (at-hand extantness) there are beings in the sense of the Dasein, who exists. But this being which we ourselves are—Was this not always already known, in philosophy and even in pre-philosophical knowledge? Can one make such a fuss about stressing expressly the fact that besides the extant at-hand there is also this being that we ourselves are? After all, every Dasein, insofar as it is, always already knows about itself and knows that it differs from other beings. We ourselves said that for all its being oriented primarily to the extant at-hand, ancient ontology nevertheless is familiar with psuche, nous, logos, zoe, bios, soul, reason, life in the broadest sense. Of course. But it should be borne in mind that the ontical, factual familiarity of a being does not after all guarantee a suitable interpretation of its being. The Dasein is indeed already aware that it is not just another being which it experiences. At least the Dasein can be aware of it. Not every Dasein has this awareness; for example, mythical and magical thinking identifies things with itself. But even when the Dasein does take cognizance that it itself is not another being, this does not include the explicit knowledge that its mode of being is different from that of the being which it itself is not. Rather, as we see in the example of antiquity, the Dasein can ontologically interpret itself and its mode of being with regard to the extant at-hand and its way of being. The specific question about the ontological constitution of the Dasein gets blocked and confused by many preconceptions which are grounded in the Dasein’s own existence. That this is so will be made clear to us, among other things, by the discussion of the third thesis. It will aim above all at making generally plainer to us the problem of the multiplicity of ways of being extending beyond the uniqueness of mere at-hand extantness.

Wenn das Dasein eine völlig Andere Seinsverfassung zeigt als das Vorhandene und wenn Existieren in unserem terminologischen Gebrauch etwas anderes besagt als existere und existentia (εἶναι), dann wird auch fraglich, ob zur ontologischen Verfassung des Daseins so etwas Wie Sachheit, essentia, οὐσία gehören kann. Sachheit, realitas oder quidditas, ist dasjenige, was auf die Frage antwortet: quid est res, was ist die Sache? Schon die rohe Betrachtung zeigt: Das Seiende, das Wir Selbst sind, das Dasein, kann als solches mit der Frage, was ist das?, überhaupt Nicht befragt Werden. zu diesem Seienden gewinnen wir nur Zugang, wenn wir fragen: Wer ist es? Das Dasein ist nicht durch die Washeit, sondern – wenn wir den Ausdruck Bilden dürfen – durch die Werheit konstituiert. Die Antwort gibt nicht eine Sache, sondern ein Ich, Du, Wir. Aber wir fragen doch andererseits: Was ist dieses Wer und diese Werheit des Daseins, – was ist das Wer im Unterschied von dem vorgenannten Was im engeren Sinne der Sachheit des Vorhandenen? Zweifellos fragen wir so. Aber darin bekundet sich nur, daß dieses Was, mit dem wir auch nach dem Wesen des Wer fragen, Offenbar sich nicht mit dem Was im Sinne der Washeit decken kann. Mit Anderen Worten, der Grundbegriff der essentia, (170) der Washeit, wird angesichts des Seienden, das wir Dasein nennen, erst recht problematisch. Die unzureichende Fundierung der These als einer universal-ontologischen wird sichtbar. Soll sie überhaupt eine ontologische Bedeutung Haben, dann bedarf sie einer Einschränkung und Modifikation. Es muß positiv gezeigt werden, in welchem Sinne jegliches Seiende nach seinem Was befragt werden kann, in welchem Sinne aber Seiendes durch die Wer-Frage angefragt werden muß. Erst von Hier aus wird das Problem der distinctio zwischen essentia und existentia kompliziert. Es ist nicht nur die Frage des Verhältnisses von Washeit und Vorhandenheit, sondern zugleich die Frage des Verhältnisses von Werheit und Existenz, Existenz in unserem Sinne verstanden als Seinsart des Seienden, das wir selbst sind. Allgemeiner gefaßt, die These: Zu jedem Seienden gehören essentia und existentia, zeigt lediglich das allgemeine Problem der Artikulation jedes Seienden in ein Seiendes, das es ist, und in das Wie seines Seins an.

Wir haben früher schon den Zusammenhang zwischen der Grundartikulation des Seins und der ontologischen Differenz angezeigt. Das Problem der Artikulation des Seins in essentia und existentia, scholastisch formuliert, ist nur eine speziellere Frage, die die ontologische Differenz überhaupt betrifft, d. h. den Unterschied zwischen Seiendem und Sein. Jetzt zeigt sich, daß die ontologische Differenz verwickelter wird, so formal dieser Unterschied sich anhört und ausnimmt. Verwickelter deshalb, weil unter dem Titel »Sein« jetzt nicht nur essentia und existentia stehen, sondern zugleich Werheit und Existenz in unserem Sinne. Die Artikulation des Seins variiert mit der jeweiligen Weise des Seins eines Seienden. Diese kann nicht auf Vorhandensein und Wirklichkeit im Sinne der Tradition eingeschränkt werden. Die Frage nach der möglichen Mannigfaltigkeit des Seins und damit zugleich die nach der Einheit des Begriffes von Sein überhaupt wird brennend. Zugleich wird die Leere Formel für die ontologische Differenz immer reicher an Problemgehalt.

(171) Zunächst aber meldet sich für uns das eine Problem, daß außer dem Vorhandenen (Vorhandenheit) Seiendes ist im Sinne des Daseins, das existiert. Aber war nicht in der Philosophie und sogar schon im vorphilosophischen Erkennen dieses Seiende, das wir selbst sind, immer schon bekannt? Kann Man so viel Aufhebens machen von der ausdrücklichen Betonung, daß es außer dem Vorhandenen auch Seiendes gibt, das wir selbst sind? Alles Dasein weiß doch immer schon, sofern es ist, um sich selbst und weiß, daß es sich von anderem Seienden unterscheidet. Wir sagten doch selbst, daß in der antiken Ontologie, die zwar primär am Vorhandenen orientiert ist, doch ψυχή, νοὔς, λόγος, ζῷή, βίος, Seele, Vernunft, Leben im weitesten Sinne, bekannt sind. Allerdings; aber es ist zu bedenken, daß die ontische faktische Kenntnis eines Seienden nicht schon die angemessene Interpretation seines Seins verbürgt. Zwar ist dem Dasein bekannt, daß es anderes Seiendes, das es erfährt, nicht ist. Mindestens kann es dem Dasein bekannt sein. Es ist nicht jedem Dasein bekannt, sofern z. B. das mythische und magische denken die Dinge mit sich selbst identifiziert. Aber selbst wenn dem Dasein bekannt ist, daß es selbst anderes Seiendes nicht ist, so liegt darin noch nicht die explizite Erkenntnis, daß seine Seinsart eine andere ist als die des Seienden, das es selbst nicht ist. Das Dasein kann vielmehr, wie wir am Beispiel der Antike sehen, ontologisch sich selbst und seine Seinsart im Hinblick auf das Vorhandene und dessen Weise zu sein interpretieren. Die spezifische Frage nach der ontologischen Verfassung des Daseins wird durch mannigfache Vorurteile, die in der Existenz des Daseins selbst begründet sind, hintangehalten und verwirrt. Daß dem so ist, soll uns unter anderem die Erörterung der dritten These deutlich machen. Sie zielt vor Allem darauf, uns überhaupt das Problem einer Mannigfaltigkeit von Weisen des Seins, über die Einzigkeit des nur Vorhandenseins hinaus, näher zu bringen.
