Al optar por mí mismo en cuanto posibilidad mía, opto por mi ser. Mas esa posibilidad por la que opto al adelantarme hasta la muerte es una posibilidad cierta y, al mismo tiempo que cierta, indeterminada. El optar, pues, por sí mismo al adelantarse hasta la posibilidad debe llevar, siendo verdadero, a una relación-de-ser para con los rasgos característicos déla posibilidad; lo que quiere decir que se asume lo indeterminado de la muerte una vez se ha entendido en todo momento la posibilidad en cuanto posibilidad, es decir, cuando al haber optado por mí mismo estoy absolutamente resuelto . Se asume, entonces, la certeza de dicha posibilidad cuando todo posible poder-ser mío diferente queda postergado; dicho de otro modo, cuando la resolución de la opción por uno mismo es tal que sólo de ella brota la posibilidad de cualquier acción concreta y determinada. El que, al adelantarse, el Dasein sea capaz de llegar a tan absoluta resolución quiere decir que, adelantándose hasta su muerte, el Dasein sabe hacerse responsable de sí mismo en un sentido absoluto. «Sabe» optar por la condición de ser de sí mismo, a saber, por sí mismo . En dicha opción no se opta más que por el querer tener conciencia . Es verdad que esa opción no tiene por qué llevarse a cabo únicamente mediante el adelantarse. El querer tener conciencia puede también realizarse de otras maneras, pero si lo que le interesa al Dasein es optar por sí, entendiéndose plena y claramente en su integridad, existe sólo esa única posibilidad del adelantarse hasta la muerte para optar por el Dasein en su propio ser, y no con vistas a los próximos dos días. El adelantarse es optar por el querer tener conciencia. El que actúa, no obstante, como ya lo dijo Goethe, carece siempre de conciencia. Y sólo puedo carecer verdaderamente de conciencia si he optado por querer tenerla.

(398) El que actúa carece de conciencia, es decir, resulta necesariamente «culpable» en el estar-con-otros, no en el sentido de que haya cometido alguna falta, sino que el Dasein es por sí mismo culpable por su co-estar-siendo con los demás actuando, aun cuando —y sobre todo en ese caso— no sepa que daña a otro o que lo destruye en su Dasein . Al optar por querer tener conciencia opto al mismo tiempo por hacerme culpable, deudor. El modo de ser genuino del Dasein que corresponde a su posibilidad extrema y más propia (el estar-por-delante-de-sí-mismo más propio llevado a cabo por él mismo) es el mencionado adelantarse del querer tener conciencia, lo que supone también optar por el ser culpable, o deudor, esencial del propio Dasein en tanto que es. In choosing myself as my possibility I myself choose my being. But this possibility which I choose in running forward toward death is a certain possibility and as such at the same time an indefinite possibility. The self-choosing in forerunning into possibility must as authentic self-choosing come into an appropriate relationship of being to the characters of possibility. This means that the indefiniteness of death is seized when I have understood the possibility as a possibility for every moment, that is, when I am absolutely resolute in having chosen myself [GA20:440-442] (319). The certainty of this possibility is seized when every other possible can-be of mine is set apart from it, that is, when the resoluteness toward itself is such that it is the source of the possibility of this or that action. If Dasein in forerunning can bring itself into such an absolute resoluteness, it means that in this running forward toward its death Dasein can make itself responsible in an absolute sense. It ‘can’ choose the presupposition of being of itself, that is, it can choose itself What is chosen in this choice is nothing other than willing to have conscience. This choice of course does Not have to take place only in this forerunning. Willing to have conscience can also be actuated otherwise, but insofar as the issue in Dasein is to choose itself in understanding the full transparency of Dasein as a whole, there is only this one possibility of forerunning toward death, in order to choose Dasein not for the next two days but to choose it in its very being. Forerunning is the choice of willing to have conscience. But he who acts, as Goethe already said, is always without conscience. I can truly be without conscience only when I have chosen to be willing to have conscience.

The actor is without conscience; that is, in being with one another he who acts necessarily becomes ‘guilty,’ not in the sense that he commits this or that blunder. As an active being-with with others and as such, Dasein is eo ipso guilty, even when—and precisely when—it does not know that it is injuring another or destroying him in his Dasein. With the choice of being willing to have conscience, I have at the same time chosen to have become guilty. The genuine kind of being of Dasein corresponding to its utmost and ownmost possibility (the ownmost being-ahead-of-itself enacted by itself) is what we have characterized as the forerunning of willing to have conscience, which at the same time means choosing the essential guilt of Dasein itself, insofar as it is. Diese Möglichkeit aber, die ich im Vorlaufen zum Tode wähle, ist eine gewisse und als gewisse zugleich eine unbestimmte. Das Sich-selbst-wäblen im Vorlaufen in die Möglichkeit muß als eigentliches demnach in ein angemessenes Seinsverhältnis zu den Charakteren der Möglichkeit kommen, Was besagt, die Unbestimmtheit des Todes ist dann ergriffen, wenn ich die Möglichkeit als Möglichkeit für jeden Augenblick verstanden Habe, d. h. wenn ich im Gewählthaben meiner selbst absolut entschlossen bin. Die Gewißheit dieser Möglichkeit ist dann ergriffen, wenn ihr jedes Mögliche Andere Seinkönnen meiner selbst hintangesetzt wird, d. h. wenn die Entschlossenheit zu sich selbst eine solche ist, aus der erst die Möglichkeit dieses oder jenes bestimmten Handelns entspringt. Wenn sich das. Dasein im Vorlaufen in eine solche absolute Entschlossenheit bringen kann, besagt das: Dasein kann in diesem Vorlaufen zu seinem Tode sich selbst verantwortlich (441) in einem absoluten Sinne machen. Es »kann« die Seins-Voraussetzung seiner selbst, nämlich sich selbst wählen. In dieser Wahl ist Nichts anderes gewählt als das Gewissenhabenwoüen. Diese Wahl muß sich allerdings Nicht einzig in diesem Vorlaufen vollziehen. Das Gewissenhabenwollen kann sich auch sonst aktuieren, aber sofern es im Dasein darauf ankommt, sich im Verstehen der vollen Durchsichtigkeit des Daseins als eines Ganzen zu wählen, besteht nur diese einzige Möglichkeit des Vorlaufens zum Tode, um das Dasein nicht für die nächsten zwei Tage, sondern in seinem Sein selbst zu wählen. Das Vorlaufen ist die Wahl des Gewissenhabenwollens. Der Handelnde aber ist, Wie Goethe schon sagte, immer gewissenlos. Gewissenlos kann ich eigentlich nur sein, wenn ich das Gewissenhabenwollen gewählt habe.

Der Handelnde ist gewissenlos, d. h. er wird im Miteinandersein notwendig »schuldigt nicht in dem Sinne, daß er diesen oder jenen Fehltritt begeht, sondern als handelndes Mitsein mit Anderen und als solches ist das Dasein eo ipso schuldig, auch wenn es — und gerade dann — wenn es nicht weiß, daß es einen Anderen schädigt oder in seinem Dasein zerstört. Mit der Wahl des Gewissenhabenwollens habe ich zugleich das Schuldiggewordensein gewählt. Die genuine entsprechende Seimart des Daseins zu seiner äußersten und eigensten Möglichkeit (das Eigenste von ihm selbst her vollzogene Sich-selbst-vorweg-sein) ist das gekennzeichnete Vorlaufen des Gewissenhaben wo! lens, was zugleich besagt, das Wählen des wesenhaften Schuldigseins des Daseins selbst, sofern es ist.
