La cotidianidad del Dasein está caracterizada por el quedar absorbido en el uno. En la publicidad del estar-con-otros la muerte es un acontecer cotidiano fijo. Un acontecer que se interpreta así: «alguna vez tiene uno que morir» . Ese «morirse uno» encierra cierta ambigüedad: pues ese uno es justamente el que nunca se muere ni puede nunca morirse. Al decir el Dasein: «morirse uno» está a la vez diciendo «nadie se muere», es decir, yo mismo en este caso no. La muerte es algo que acontece en el estar-con-otros para lo cual el uno tiene ya dispuesta la correspondiente interpretación. En el «morirse uno» se halla la muerte ya de antemano reducida a una posibilidad de ser que en cierto sentido no es posibilidad de nadie. Pero de ese modo de un golpe nos quitamos de en medio ya de antemano lo que la muerte sea. El «morirse uno» es la interpretación mediante la cual el Dasein remarca lo que es su posibilidad más propia con el sello del estar interpretado público, corriente en la cotidianidad, y así, además, la aleja de sí.

En ese quitársela de en medio, alejándola, se encuentra otra ambigüedad más: «uno tiene que morir, pero lo cierto es que entretanto no llega la muerte». Se discurre así, como si la muerte antes de nada tuviera que venir (394) de algún sitio, cuando lo cierto es que el propio Dasein ya es en todos los casos esa su posibilidad. Ese alejar el verdadero ser de la muerte resulta, por supuesto, tranquilizador, es decir, la interpretación pública del Dasein llega hasta el punto de, por ejemplo, intentar convencer al que se está muriendo de que, ya verá, pronto va a estar otra vez de pie, esto es, va a regresar a la cotidianidad del Dasein. Esa interpretación mediana que el mundo hace del propio Dasein pretende incluso que con ese consolar al otro se está llegando a un auténtico estar-con él, cuando en realidad por medio de tales consuelos sólo se le empuja al Dasein a que vuelva a quedar de nuevo absorbido en el mundo, con lo que precisamente la situación específica de su ser en ese momento le quedará encubierta.

Ese estar interpretado público regula también de antemano el modo de ser público para con la muerte, en el sentido de que tiene ya decidido lo que hay que considerar acerca del pensar en la muerte. El pensar en la muerte se considera públicamente miedo cobarde, triste huida del mundo. La publicidad no tolera que haya, frente al miedo a la muerte, lo que se dice valor, sino que promueve el olvido, y al tiempo lo interpreta como si fuera una ventaja del Dasein, la de la seguridad en sí mismo, frente a aquel supuesto ensombrecimiento de la vida. Son ésos los rasgos que caracterizan el modo de ser del uno, y debería quedar claro que aquí, una vez más, vuelve a aparecer la cotidianidad en su manera de ser, a saber, la del abandonarse.

Al hacer ambigua la muerte, el uno no sólo se la quita de en medio en lo que la muerte es; alejándola, al mismo tiempo se tranquiliza y se aliena, al ocuparse de que en la muerte no se piense. Queriendo no pensar en la muerte, la cotidianidad del Dasein es una constante huida de la muerte. Mas justamente ahí se pone de manifiesto en el fenómeno que la muerte no viene de ningún sitio, sino que se halla bien afincada en el propio Dasein. No queriendo pensar en la muerte viene a atestiguar el Dasein que la muerte misma está en su ser. Dicho al revés, no por pensar en la muerte va a estar ésta en el Dasein. Aquello de lo que huye el Dasein en su huida cotidiana abandonándose, aun cuando no piense en la muerte, no es sino el propio Dasein, por cuanto la muerte es para él constituyente.

Ahora bien, el modo de ser del abandonarse es también un encubrir, es decir, descansa en un reinterpretar, en un no querer ver lo que la muerte sea. No obstante, eso implica un ver previo y constante, es decir, lo que ahí se oculta es el ser propio. Ese ocuparse, sin que se note, de no pensar en la muerte encubre uno de sus rasgos básicos, a saber, su certeza. La ambigüedad del «alguna vez tiene uno que morir» reinterpreta esa certeza transformándola en incertidumbre. La certeza despunta en ese interpretado público (395) que dice: «Todos tendremos que creer en ella alguna vez», enunciado acerca de la muerte que, como quien dice, no va dirigido a nadie y en el que, sin embargo, justamente se ve que el sentido de la muerte es que se trata de una posibilidad mía de ser. Esa certeza de que soy yo mismo el que va a morir es la certeza básica del propio Dasein; y un enunciado auténtico acerca del Dasein, mientras que el cogito sum no lo es más que en apariencia. En caso de que tales fórmulas aforísticas signifiquen algo en absoluto, el enunciado pertinente al ser del Dasein sería: sum moribundus, y no moribundus por estar gravemente enfermo o herido, sino que, sólo por ser, soy ya moribundus —el moribundus es lo que antes que nada da su sentido al sum.

La incertidumbre con la que el Dasein se encubre su originaria certeza de ser viene además a consolidarse gracias a que uno, como quien dice, calcula y determina que en ningún caso ahora —según la opinión general, que es como se suelen ver las cosas— hay por qué esperar la muerte. En cierto sentido se calcula la posible llegada de la muerte, pasando, sin embargo, por alto que esa indeterminación, el hecho de que la muerte pueda venirnos en cualquier momento, es inherente en esencia a la certeza de que va a venirnos. Esa indeterminación del cuándo vendrá supone en términos positivos la posibilidad de que venga en cualquier momento; no mitiga en absoluto la certeza de que va a venir, sino que es justo lo que antes que nada le confiere el acicate y el carácter de posibilidad permanente y extrema que es el Dasein. Estos dos rasgos, el que la muerte sea algo absolutamente cierto y el que esa certeza sea al mismo tiempo indeterminada, constituyen el modo de ser de esa posibilidad que es la muerte. La muerte es la posibilidad extrema y, aunque indeterminada, sin embargo, cierta que el Dasein tiene por delante de sí, y a la vez la posibilidad de la que el Dasein huye en la vida cotidiana, con lo que dicha posibilidad se vuelve ambigua. Eso quiere decir que la cotidianidad no tiene la relación-de-ser más verdadera y originaria para con la muerte, al no tener en cuenta, o al encubrirlo, uno de los caracteres de ser de la muerte, el de que la muerte es en cada caso siempre la mía.

The everydayness of Dasein is defined by absorption in the Everyone. In the public arena of being-with-one-another, death is an established everyday encounter. This encounter is interpreted as ‘one also dies some day.’ This ‘Everyone dies’ harbors an ambiguity in itself, for this Everyone is just what never dies and never can die. Dasein says ‘Everyone dies’ because this means ‘No one dies,’ namely, Not I myself. Death is something in being-with-one-another for which the Everyone already has a suitable interpretation ready. In ‘Everyone dies’ death is from the start leveled to a possibility of being which in a sense is no one’s possibility. Death, in terms of what it truly is, is thus from the start driven away. ‘Everyone dies’ is the interpretation in which Dasein re-labels its ownmost possibility for the public way of having things interpreted for everyday circulation, thereby driving its own-most possibility away from itself.

There is a further ambiguity in thus driving it away. ‘Everyone dies, but for the time being death won’t come.’ One speaks as if death first had to come from somewhere, while Dasein itself is in each instance already this its possibility. Driving away the authentic being of death at the same time has the character of tranquilization. The public self-interpretation of Dasein goes so far that in being-with-one-another one even cheers the dying person up by telling him that he will soon be up and around again, that is to say, back in the everydayness of Dasein. The average worldly self-interpretation of Dasein hopes thereby to console the other, to come into a genuine being-with-one-another with him, where however such consolations only serve to push Dasein back again into becoming absorbed in the world, so that the specific situation of its being now really remains concealed to it.

The same public way of having things interpreted now also from the start regulates the public kind of being toward death, in the way that it has also already decided about what is to be held in thinking about death. Thinking about death is publicly regarded as cowardly dread and a gloomy flight from the world. The public does not permit the courage for dread in the face of death to come up, but hastens to forget it while at the same time interpreting this action as a form of self-security and superiority of Dasein opposed to this ostensible gloominess of life. These are the characters which mark the way of being of the Everyone, and it should be clear that what appears here is once again the way of everydayness in its being, that is, in the mode of being of falling.

In making death ambiguous, the Everyone not only drives it away in regard to what it is. Driving it away is at the same time tranquilizing and has the character of estrangement, since not thinking about death now becomes a concern. In not wanting to think about death, the everydayness of Dasein is in constant flight in the face of death. But here is where it becomes phenomenally evident that death does not come from somewhere but has gained a hold in Dasein itself. In not wanting to think about it, Dasein bears witness to its being in death itself. Conversely, death is not first in Dasein because it by chance thinks about it. That before which Dasein flees in its falling flight in everydayness, even without expressly thinking about death, is nothing other than Dasein itself, specifically insofar as death is constitutive of it.

But the mode of being of falling is also a covering up. It operates by way of a reinterpretation, not letting itself see what death is. But this still implies a constant seeing beforehand, so that what it conceals in it is its own being. The inconspicuous concern of not thinking about death covers up a basic character in it, namely its certainty. This certainty is reinterpreted into uncertainty by means of the ambiguity of ‘Everyone dies someday.’ One takes the edge off this certainty in this public way of having death interpreted which says, ‘Each of us will someday have to believe in this’—a statement about death which is really addressed to no one, where after all the sense of death is just that it is my own possibility of being. This certainty, that “I myself am in that I will die,” is the basic certainty of Dasein itself. It is a genuine statement of Dasein, while cogito sum is only the semblance of such a statement. If such pointed formulations mean anything at all, then the appropriate statement pertaining to Dasein in its being would have to be sum moribundus [“I am in dying”], moribundus not as someone gravely ill or wounded, but insofar as I am, I am moribundus. The MORIBUNDUS first gives the SUM its sense.

The uncertainty with which Dasein covers up its original certainty of being is at the same time supported by the calculation and determination that now—according to a general estimate, which is the way one tends to see things—death in any case cannot be anticipated. One in a sense reckons that death can come and thereby overlooks that this indefiniteness, whereby death can come at any moment, belongs essentially to its certainty. This indefiniteness as to when death comes positively refers to the possibility that it can come at any moment. It in no way weakens the certainty of its coming, but rather gives it its sting and the character of an utmost and constant possibility which Dasein is. These two characters, that death is absolutely certain, and that this certainty is at the same time indefinite, constitute the manner of being of this possibility of death. Death is the utmost, though indefinite, yet certain possibility in which Dasein itself stands before itself, but at the same time the possibility before which Dasein flees in everydayness, so that it makes this possibility ambiguous. This means that everydayness does not have the most authentic and most original relationship to death, inasmuch as a character of the being of death is disregarded or covered up by it, namely, that death is in each instance my death.

Die Alltäglichkeit des Daseins bestimmt sich durch das Aufgehen im Man. In der Öffentlichkeit des Miteinanderseins ist der Tod ein festes alltägliches Begegnis. Dieses Begegnis ist ausgelegt als »man stirbt eben auch einmal·. Dieses »Man stirbt« birgt eine Zweideutigkeit in sich; denn dieses Man ist gerade das, Was nie stirbt und nie Sterben kann. Das Dasein sagt: »Man stirbt«, weil darin gesagt ist: »Niemand stirbt«, d.h. je Nicht gerade Ich Selbst. Der Tod ist etwas im Miteinandersein, für das das Man schon eine entsprechende Auslegung (436) bereit hat. Im »Man stirbt« ist der Tod von vornherein auf eine Seinsmöglichkeit nivelliert, die in gewissem Sinne niemandes Möglichkeit ist. Damit aber ist der Tod in dem, was er ist, von vornherein abgedrängt. Das »Man stirbt« ist die Auslegung, in der sich das Dasein seine eigenste Möglichkeit zu einer alltäglich passierenden öffentlichen Ausgelegtheit umstempelt, und die es dazu noch von sich abdrängt.

In dieser Abdrängung liegt eine weitere Zweideutigkeit: »Man stirbt, aber vorläufig kommt der Tod ja noch nicht.« Man redet so, als müßte der Tod allererst irgendwoher kommen, während doch das Dasein selbst je schon diese seine Möglichkeit ist. Dieses abdrängen des eigentlichen Seins des Todes hat nun zugleich den Charakter der Beruhigung, d. h. die öffentliche Selbstauslegung des Daseins geht so weit, daß man z. B. im Miteinandersein sogar dem Sterbenden noch einredet, er werde bald wieder auf kommen, d. h. in die Alltäglichkeit des Daseins zurückkehren. Die durchschnittliche weltliche Selbstauslegung des Daseins meint sogar, dabei den Anderen noch zu trösten, in ein echtes Miteinandersein, mit ihm zu kommen, wo doch durch solche Tröstungen das Dasein nur wieder in das Aufgehen in die Welt zurückgestoßen wird, so zwar, daß ihm nun gerade die spezifische Situation seines Seins verdeckt bleibt.

Dieselbe öffentliche Ausgelegtheit regelt nun auch von vornherein die öffentliche Seinsart zum Tode in der Weise, daß sie auch schon darüber entschieden hat, was vom denken an den Tod zu halten ist. Das Denken an den Tod gilt öffentlich als feige Angst, als finstere Weltflucht. Die Öffentlichkeit läßt so etwas Wie Mut zur Angst vor dem Tode nicht aufkommen, sondern betreibt ein vergessen desselben, was zugleidi als Selbstsicherheit und Überlegenheit des Daseins selbst gegenüber dieser angeblichen Verfinsterung des Lebens ausgelegt wird. Es sind dies Charaktere, die die Seinsart des Man kennzeichnen, und es dürfte deutlich Sein, daß Hier sich wiederum die Weise der Alltäglichkeit in ihrem Sein zeigt, nämlich in der Seinsart des Verfallene.

(437) Das Man drängt im Zweideutigmadien des Todes diesen nicht nur ab als das, was er ist, dieses Abdrängen ist zugleich Beruhigen und hat den Charakter der Entfremdung, sofern das Nichtdenken an den Tod besorgt wird. Die Alltäglichkeit des Daseins ist in diesem Nichtdenken-Wollen an den Tod auf der ständigen Flucht vor ihm. Aber gerade hierin wird phänomenal sichtbar, daß der Tod nicht irgendwoher kommt, sondern im Dasein selbst sich festgesetzt hat. Im Nicht-an-ihn-denken-wollen bezeugt das Dasein dem Tod selbst sein Sein. Umgekehrt ist der Tod nicht erst dadurch im Dasein, daß es etwa an ihn denkt. Wovor das Dasein in seiner verfallenden Flucht in der Alltäglichkeit auch ohne ausdrückliches Denken an den Tod flieht, ist Nichts anderes als das Dasein selbst, und zwar sofern für es der Tod konstitutiv ist.

Die Seinsart des Verfallens aber ist auch ein verdecken, d. h. sie bewegt sich in einem Uminterpretieren, einem Nicht-sehenlassen dessen, was der Tod ist. Darin aber liegt doch ein zuvor und ständiges sehen, d. h. was es an ihm verbirgt, ist das eigene Sein. Das unauffällige Besorgen des Nichtdenkens an den Tod verdeckt einen Grundcharakter an ihm, nämlich seine Gewißheit. Mit der Zweideutigkeit des »Man stirbt ja einmal· ist diese Gewißheit zur Ungewißheit uminterpretiert. Man bricht dieser Gewißheit die Spitze ab in dieser öffentlichen Ausgelegtheit, die sagt: »Es wird ja jeder einmal daran glauben müssen! – eine Aussage über den Tod, die gleichsam an niemanden adressiert ist, wo doch gerade der Sinn des Todes ist, daß er die Seinsmoglichkeit meiner selbst ist. Diese Gewißheit, daß ich es selbst bin in meinem Sterbenwerden, ist die Grundgewißheit des Daseins selbst und ist eine echte Daseinsaussage, während das cogito sum nur der Schein einer solchen ist. Wenn solche zugespitzten Formeln überhaupt etwas besagen, müßte die angemessene und das Dasein in seinem Sein betreffende Aussage lauten: sum moribundus, und zwar nicht moribundus als Schwerkranker oder Verwundeter, sondern sofern ich bin, (438) bin ich moribundus – das moribundus gibt dem sum allererst seinen Sinn.

Die Ungewißheit, mit der sich das Dasein die ursprüngliche Seinsgewißheit seiner selbst verdeckt, wird nun dadurch zugleich verfestigt, daß man gleichsam berechnet und bestimmt, daß Jetzt – nach allgemeinem Ermessen, nämlich so, wie man die Dinge zu sehen pflegt – der Tod in keinem Falle zu Erwarten ist. Man berechnet in gewissem Sinne das Kommenkönnen des Todes und übersieht dabei, daß diese Unbestimmtheit, daß der Tod nämlich jeden Augenblick kommen kann, wesensmäßig zu seiner Gewißheit gehört. Diese Unbestimmtheit, wann der Tod kommt, besagt positiv die Möglichkeit, daß er jeden Augenblick kommen kann; sie schwächt die Gewißheit, daß er kommt, in keiner Weise ab, sondern gibt ihr gerade allererst den Stachel und den Charakter einer äußersten und ständigen Möglichkeit, die das Dasein ist. Diese beiden Charaktere, daß der Tod absolut gewiß ist, und daß diese Gewißheit zugleich unbestimmt ist, machen die Seins art dieser Möglichkeit des Todes aus. Der Tod ist die äußerste, obzwar unbestimmte, aber gewisse Möglichkeit, in der das Dasein in der Alltäglichkeit flieht, so zwar, daß es diese Möglichkeit zweideutig Macht Das bedeutet: Die Alltäglichkeit hat nicht das eigentlichste und ursprünglichste Seinsverhältnis zum Tode, sofern dabei gerade ein Seinscharakter des Todes außer acht gelassen, bzw. verdeckt ist, daß er nämlich je mein Tod ist.
