En el anterior análisis de la constitución básica del Dasein en cuanto estar-siendo-en-el-mundo el tema era el mundo en cuanto en-qué del Dasein, tomado éste en su sentido concreto de estar-siendo-en. Pero en ese análisis del mundo tampoco resaltábamos todos los fenómenos que allí aparecían. Al explicar el mundo-en-torno del trabajador se nos mostraba el fenómeno del mundo público. Tanto en el trabajo a que se atendía como en el Material que se empleaba y en las herramientas que se usaban hay otros, para quienes se hace el trabajo, quienes a su vez han fabricado las herramientas, que co-están, que con-son aquí, que coexisten . En el mundo del ocuparse comparecen otros, y ese comparecer es un co-estar, un con-ser aquí, un coexistir, no un estar ahí. No hemos vuelto a tener en cuenta a (297) esos otros por lo que hace a su modo de ser ni mucho menos a su manera de comparecer.

Por otro lado, se habló también del mundo-en-torno público, contraponiéndolo al en cada caso propio, y de la fluctuante frontera entre el estar-siendo-en-el-mundo público y el estar-siendo-en-el-mundo propio. El mundo-en-torno, decíamos, no sólo es el mío sino también el de los demás, el de los otros . Una vez más se nos mostraba el fenómeno de los otros, sin que tampoco entonces lo resaltáramos con mayor acuidad  –  los otros, de quienes decíamos que comparecen ante nosotros. No es que hayamos pasado por alto el fenómeno de «los demás», de «los otros» que coexisten en el mundo-en-torno, ni siquiera en los contextos ya tratados, sino que deliberadamente hemos restringido el análisis del mundo-en-torno sólo a las cosas que comparecen en ese mundo-en-torno. Esto supone una reducción violenta del análisis del mundo, exigida, no obstante, por el propio asunto, como más adelante se verá.

Es verdad que hasta ahora no hemos tenido en cuenta a los demás y su ser, pero tampoco  –  y eso es algo que se debe tener bien presente  –  hemos partido en nuestro análisis del presupuesto de que en principio esté yo solo en el mundo o de que en principio se dé el «yo» sin el mundo. Una vez rechazados tales planteamientos y puesto de manifiesto el estar-siendo-en-el-mundo, hablar del aislamiento del yo o de que «esté yo solo en el mundo» es algo que carece de sentido. La última formulación de lo que primero se halla en el fenómeno del Dasein  –  «estoy siendo en un mundo»  –  sería ya mucho más adecuada que «en principio existe un mero sujeto sin mundo». Pero incluso esa formulación: «en principio se da un yo con su estar-siendo-en-el-mundo», resulta errónea. Puesto que, al tratar del estar-siendo-en-el-mundo nos referimos siempre al estar absorbido en el mundo del ocuparse cotidiano inmediato, en el cual los demás, los otros, también coexisten. Así pues, nada de un «sujeto» y un «yo» a los se contrapusieran un «objeto» o un «no-yo». Esa indeterminación en la que dejábamos el «quién» que el Dasein es, así como el no haber resaltado a los otros que comparecen junto con el mundo, fue algo metodológicamente deliberado, exigido por la subsistencia fenoménica básica del existir cotidiano.

Así las cosas, ¿qué significa para el ser del Dasein esa indeterminación del «quién» y esa falta de resalte de los otros en el mundo-en-torno? Sencillamente que el Dasein, en cuanto estar-siendo-en-el-mundo, es al mismo tiempo (298) estar-con-otros  –  mejor dicho: «co-estar-siendo» . El enunciado fenomenológico: «El Dasein, en cuanto estar-siendo-en-el-mundo, es co-estar-siendo con otros», tiene un sentido ontológico-existencial y no pretende dar expresión al hecho de que efectivamente yo no soy un ser único y de que existen otros entes de mi especie. Si con tal definición pretendiera decir eso, que efectivamente yo no soy un ser único, estaría hablando de mi Dasein como si éste fuera una cosa que está ahí en el mundo-en-torno; y el ser no sería una caracterización que conviniera al Dasein por sí mismo, en razón de su manera de ser, sino que el co-estar-siendo sería algo que el Dasein ocasionalmente tendría, precisamente por causa de la existencia de los demás. El Dasein sería co-estar-siendo sólo porque los demás efectivamente existen.

El co-estar-siendo supone un carácter de ser co-originario con el estar-siendo-en-el-mundo del Dasein en cuanto tal, y ésa es la condición formal de posibilidad del co-estar-alumbrado  del Dasein de los demás para el Dasein siempre propio. Este carácter del co-estar-siendo caracteriza al Dasein incluso cuando de hecho al otro Dasein no se le aborda para hablarle sino que se lo percibe como algo que está ahí. Hasta el estar solo del Dasein es co-estar-siendo en el mundo. El estar solo no es sino una forma deficiente del co-estar-siendo  –  falta el otro  –  ; con ello, sin embargo, se apunta justamente el carácter positivo del co-estar-siendo. Falta el otro, eso quiere decir que la constitución de ser del Dasein en cuanto co-estar-siendo no llega fácticamente a completarse. El que falte el otro es algo que sólo puede darse si mi propio ser es co-estar-siendo; es una modificación del ser de mi propio Dasein y en cuanto tal una manera positiva de mi ser: sólo porque es co-estar-siendo puede el Dasein estar solo. Por otro lado, no se acaba con la soledad de nadie por poner a su lado otro ejemplar del género humano, ni siquiera otros diez. Por muchos que haya a su lado puede el Dasein seguir estando solo, puesto que el estar-con-otros no se basa en el hecho de que estén ahí juntos ejemplares iguales de cosas-sujeto . Así (299) como de primeras el Dasein no es sólo un sujeto sin mundo ni un «interior» al que se le añadiera el mundo, así tampoco pasa el Dasein a ser co-estar-siendo por el hecho de que otro haga efectivamente acto de presencia. In the preceding analysis of the basic constitution of Dasein as being-in-the-world, we have thematized the world as the wherein of Dasein in its specific sense of in-being. But also in this analysis of the world we have Not brought into relief all the phenomena which showed themselves there. In explicating the environing world of the craftsman, the phenomenon of the public world appeared. In the work under concern as well as in the material being employed and the Hand tool being used, there are others, for whom the work is, by whom the tool in its turn is produced, there with (the craftsman). In the world of concern, others are encountered; and the encountering is a being-there-with, not a being-on-hand. We did not consider these others any further with respect to their mode of being. And so far, we have not considered the manner of their encounter at all.

In addition, we have spoken of the public environment in contrast to one’s own, and of the fluid boundary between the public and one’s own being-in-the-world. The environing world, we said, is not only mine, but also that of others. Once again, the phenomenon of the others comes to light, without our having brought it into relief more sharply—the others, of whom we say that they encounter us. When it comes to this phenomenon of ‘the others’ who are there with me in the environing world, we have actually not overlooked it in the phenomenal contexts already treated, but have intentionally focused the analysis of the world only on the environmental things encountered. This is a violent constriction of the analysis of the world, which however is mandated by the theme itself, a point which will become apparent later.

We have indeed not considered the others and their being before, but neither have we, let it be noted, assumed a starting point for our analysis such that we said: first I am alone in the world, or first only the ‘I’ is given without the world. With the rejection of this approach and the uncovering of being-in-the-world, there can be no question of an isolation of the I, and therefore no talk of ‘I am alone in a world.’ Already the Last formulation of the primary phenomenal finding in Dasein, ‘I am in a world,’ would be essentially more appropriate than this: ‘first a bare subject exists without a world.’ But even this formulation of the starting point, ‘first an I is given with my being-in-the-world,’ is false. Therefore, when we dealt with being-in-the-world, we always spoke of concern as a proximally everyday concerned absorption in the world, in which the other is there with me. But there Was no talk of a ‘subject’ and ‘I’ which stands over against an ‘object’ or ‘not-I.’ This indeterminacy in which we left the ‘who’ that the Dasein is, along with the lack of prominence given to the others who are also encountered in the world, was methodologically deliberate, because this was mandated by the basic phenomenal composition of everyday Dasein.

What is now meant by this indeterminacy of the ‘who’ and the non-prominent status of the others in the environing world for the being of Dasein? Nothing but this: As being-in-the-world, Dasein is at the same time being with one another—more rigorously, ‘being-with.’ The phenomenological statement, ‘Dasein as being-in-the-world is a being-with with others,’ has an existential-ontological sense and does not intend to establish that in fact do not turn out to be alone and that still other entities of my kind are on hand. If this were the Intention of the stipulation, then I would be speaking of my Dasein as if it were an environmental thing on hand. And being would not be a determination which would belong to Dasein of itself by way of its kind of being. Being-with would rather be something which Dasein would have at the time just because others happen to be on hand. Dasein would be being-with only because others do in fact turn up.

Being-with signifies a character of being of Dasein as such which is co-original with being-in-the-world. And it is the formal condition of possibility of the co-disclosure of the Dasein of others for the Dasein which is in each instance one’s own. This character of being-with defines the Dasein even when another Dasein is in fact not being addressed and cannot be perceived as on hand. Even Dasein’s being-alone is a being-with in the world. Being-alone is only a deficiency of being-with—the other is absent—which points directly to the positive character of being-with. The other is absent: this means that the constitution of the being of Dasein as being-with does not come to its factual fulfillment. The other can be absent only insofar as my Dasein is itself being-with. The absence of the other is a modification of the being of my very Dasein and as such is a positive mode of my being; only as being-with can Dasein be alone. On the other hand, Dasein’s being-alone is not eliminated by having a second specimen of the species Man Stand next to him, or perhaps ten others. Even when ten or more are on hand, Dasein can be alone, inasmuch as being-with-one-another is not based upon having similar specimens of subject-things on hand together. Just as Dasein is far from being first only a worldless subject and an ‘interior’ to which the world is added, so is it far from becoming being-with because an other turns up in fact. In der bisherigen Analyse der Grundverfassung des Daseins als (/termos/i/in-der-Welt-sein) war die Welt als das worin des Daseins in seinem bestimmten Sinne des In-Seins thematisch. Aber auch bei dieser Analyse der Welt Haben Wir Nicht alle Phänomene zur Abhebung gebracht, die sich zeigten. Bei der Explikation der Umwelt des Handwerkers zeigte sich das Phänomen der öffentlichen Welt. Im besorgten Werk sowohl Wie im verwandten Material und im gebrauchten Handwerkszeug sind Andere, für die das Werk ist, von denen das Werkzeug seinerseits hergestellt ist, mit da. In der Welt des Besorgens begegnen Andere; das Begegnen ist ein Mit-Da-sein, nicht ein Vorhandensein. Diese Anderen haben wir hinsichtlich ihrer Seinsart nicht weiter in Betracht gezogen und schon gar nicht die Weise Ihres Begegnens.

Ferner wurde von der öffentlichen Umwelt gegenüber der je eigenen, gesprochen, von der fließenden Grenze zwischen dem öffentlichen und dem eigenen In-der-Welt-Sein. Die Umwelt (327), sagten wir, ist nicht nur meine, sondern auch die der Anderen. Wiederum zeigt sich das Phänomen der Anderen, ohne daß wir es damals schärfer zur Abhebung gebracht hätten  –  die Anderen, von denen wir sagen, daß sie uns begegnen. Wir haben dieses Phänomen »die Anderen«» die in der Umwelt mit da sind, nicht nur nicht in den behandelten phänomenalen Zusammenhängen übersehen, sondern haben die Analyse der Welt absichtlich nur auf die begegnenden Umweltdinge abgestellt. Das ist eine gewaltsame Einengung der Analyse der Welt, die aber von dem Thema Selbst her gefordert ist, wie sich nachher zeigt.

Die Anderen und ihr Sein haben wir zwar bisher nicht in Betracht gezogen, aber ebensowenig  –  das ist zu beachten  –  haben wir einen Ausgang unserer Analyse derart angesetzt, daß wir sagten: Zunächst bin ida allein in der Welt, oder zunächst ist nur das »Ich« gegeben ohne die Welt. Mit der Ablehnung dieses Ansatzes und der Aufdeckung des In-der-Welt-seins kann von einer Isolation des Ich, also »ich bin allein in einer Welt«, keine Rede sein. Schon die letzte Formulierung des primären phänomenalen Befundes am Dasein  –  »ich bin in einer Welt«  –  wäre wesentlich angemessener als diese: zunächst existiert ein bloßes Subjekt ohne Welt«. Aber auch diese Formulierung des Ansatzes.: »zunächst ist ein Ich mit meinem In-der-Welt-sein gegeben^ ist eine verfehlte. Deshalb wurde, wenn vom In-der-Welt-sein gehandelt wurde, immer vom Besorgen als nächst alltäglichem besorgenden Aufgehen in der Welt gesprochen, in welcher der Andere mit da ist. Keine Rede aber war von einem »Subjekt« und »Ich«, das einem »Objekt« oder »Nicht-Ich« gegenübersteht. Diese Unbestimmtheit, in der wir das »Wer« ließen, das das Dasein ist, und zugleich die Unabgehobenheit der Anderen, die mit in der Welt begegnen, war methodisch beabsichtigt, weil vom phänomenalen Grundbestand des alltäglichen Daseins her dies gefordert war.

Was besagt nun diese Unbestimmtheit des »Wer« und die Unabgehobenheit der Anderen in der Umwelt für das Sein (328) des Daseins? Nichts anderes denn: Dasein ist als In-der-Welt-sein zugleich Miteinandersein  –  genauer: »Mitsein«. Die phänomenologische Aussage: »Das Dasein als In-der-Welt-sein ist Mitsein mit Anderen« hat existenzialontologischen Sinn und will nicht feststellen, daß ich tatsächlich nicht Allem vorkomme und daß noch andere Seiende meiner Art Vorhanden seien. Wenn das gemeint wäre mit der Bestimmung, daß ich tatsächlich nicht allein vorkomme, dann spräche ich von meinem Dasein als einem umweltlichen vorhandenen Ding, und das Sein wäre nicht eine Bestimmung, die dem Dasein von ihm selbst her aus seiner Seins art zukäme, sondern das Mitsein wäre etwas, was das Dasein gerade jeweilig aufgrund des Vorhandenseins Anderer hätte. Das Dasein wäre Mitsein nur, weil Andere tatsächlich vorkommen.

Das Mitsein bedeutet einen mit dem In-der-Welt-sein gleichursprünglichen Seinscharakter des Daseins als solchen, und das ist die formale Bedingung der Möglichkeit der Miterschlossenheit des Daseins Anderer für das je eigene Dasein. Dieser Charakter des Mitseins bestimmt das Dasein auch dann, wenn ein anderes Dasein faktisch nicht angesprochen und als vorhanden wahrnehmbar ist. Audi das Alleinsein des Daseins ist Mitsein in der Welt. Das Alleinsein besagt nur eine Defizienz des Mitseins  –  der Andere fehlt  –  damit ist aber gerade der positive Charakter des Mitseins angezeigt. Der Andere fehlt, das besagt: Die Seinsverfassung des Daseins als Mitsein kommt nicht zu ihrer faktischen Erfüllung. Das Fehlen des Anderen, das es nur geben kann, sofern mein Sein selbst Mitsein ist, ist eine Seinsmodifikation meines Daseins selbst und als solche eine positive Weise meines Seins; nur als Mitsein kann Dasein allein sein. Andererseits wird das Alleinsein des Daseins nicht dadurch behoben, daß ein zweites Exemplar der Gattung Mensch daneben steht oder vielleicht zehn andere; auch wenn diese oder noch mehr vorhanden sind, kann das Dasein allein sein, sofern das Miteinandersein nicht in einem Zusammenvorhandensein gleicher Exemplare von (329) Subjektdingen gründet. So wenig das Dasein zunächst nur ein weltloses Subjekt und ein »Inneres« ist, zu dem die Welt hinzukommt, so wenig wird das Dasein erst dadurch zum Mitsein, daß ein Anderer sich faktisch einstellt.
