Le (Rickert) resulta imposible llegar a entender el carácter de conocimiento propio de la representación, porque tiene como presupuesto un concepto mítico del representar tomado de la filosofía científico-natural, que es lo (55) que le lleva a la formulación de que en el representar lo que se representan son las representaciones. En el caso de la representación constituida por la percepción simple y directa de la silla no se representa ninguna representación, sino que veo la silla. Es intrínseco al propio sentido del representar: cuando miro algo no pretendo ver la representación de ese algo, sino la silla. El mero imaginarse  algo, que también se suele considerar representación de algo que no está presente —por ejemplo, si yo ahora me represento mi mesa de trabajo—, incluso en el caso ese del mero pensar en algo no se representa una representación, un contenido de conciencia, sino la cosa misma. Lo mismo sucede con la representación del recuerdo, por ejemplo, de un viaje en velero: no me acuerdo de representaciones, sino del barco y del viaje mismos. Por mor de una teoría se hace caso omiso de los hechos más elementales intrínsecos a la propia estructura: conocer no puede ser representar, puesto que sólo si conocer no es representar se mantiene en pie la teoría de que el objeto del conocimiento es y debe ser un valor, ya que tiene que haber una filosofía de los valores.

He (Rickert) is prevented from seeing the primary cognitive character of representation because he presupposes a mythical concept of representing from the philosophy of natural science and so comes to the formulation that in representing the representations get represented. But in the case of a representation on the level of simple perception a representation is Not represented; I simply see the chair. This is implied in the very sense of representing. When I look, I am not intent upon seeing a representation of something, but the chair. Take for example mere envisaging or bringing to mind, which is also characterized as a representation of something which is not on Hand,* as when I now envisage my writing table. Even in such a case of merely thinking of something, what is represented is not a representation, not a content of consciousness, but the matter itself. The same applies to the recollective representation of, for example, a sailboat trip. I do not remember representations but the boat and the trip itself. The most primitive matters of fact which are in the structures themselves are overlooked simply for the sake of a theory. Knowing cannot be representing, for only then is the theory justified that the object of knowledge is and must be a value, because there must be a philosophy of value.

Eine Einsicht in den primären Erkenntnis charakter der Vorstellung ist ihm dadurch verbaut, daß er einen mythischen Begriff des Vorstellens aus der naturwissenschaftlichen Philosophie voraussetzt und zu der Formulierung kommt, daß beim vorstellen die Vorstellungen vorgestellt Werden. Im Falle einer Vorstellung als schlichter Wahrnehmung ist Nicht eine Vorstellung vorgestellt, sondern Ich sehe den Stuhl. Das Hegt im Sinne des Vorstellens Selbst; ich meine, wenn ich hinsehe, nicht eine Vorstellung von etwas, Was nicht Vorhanden ist, zu sehen, sondern den Stuhl. Bloße Vergegenwärtigung, die Man auch als Vorstellung von etwas bezeichnet – beispielsweise, wenn ich mir Jetzt meinen Schreibtisch vorstelle –, auch in solchem Falle bloßen Denkens an etwas wird nicht Vorstellung vorgestellt, nicht ein Bewußtseinsinhalt, sondern die Sadie selbst. Ebenso steht es mit der Erinnerungsvorstellung, z. B. einer Segelfahrt; ich erinnere mich nicht an Vorstellungen, sondern an das Boot und die Fahrt selbst. Primitivste Tatbestände, die in den Strukturen selbst hegen, werden lediglich einer Theorie zuliebe übersehen: Erkennen darf nicht Vorstellen Sein, denn nur (46) dann, wenn Erkennen nicht Vorstellen ist, besteht die Theorie zu recht, daß der Gegenstand der Erkenntnis ein Wert sei und sein muß, weil es eine Wertphilosophie geben muß.
