Sólo se asume la verdadera posibilidad de ser de la muerte cuando la relación-de-ser para con dicha posibilidad es la de entenderla en cuanto certeza de mi ser, en particular, certeza que tiene el carácter de lo indeterminado y certeza del ser que es mía. Surge así la pregunta de si en el propio (396) Dasein hay alguna posibilidad de ser en la que el Dasein pueda lograr una relación-de-ser para con la muerte que resulte verdadera.

Señalaba antes que la relación-de-ser para con un posibilidad ha de ser de tal modo que deje estar la posibilidad en cuanto posibilidad, y no, pongamos, que lleve la posibilidad a su realización, causándome acaso la muerte mediante el suicidio. Mediante el suicidio, por ejemplo, lo que hago es renunciar a la posibilidad en cuanto posibilidad, que se convierte en justo lo contrario, esto es, en realidad. Lo posibilidad es lo que es cuando perdura, es decir, cuando sigue estando por delante la posibilidad. La relación-de-ser para con ella ha de ser tal que en ese ser para con la posibilidad de lo que se trate no sea de querer poseerla, en el sentido en que el ocuparse con el mundo apresenta y pone a su disposición aquello con que se ocupa. Por el contrario, el ser debe adelantarse  hacia la posibilidad, la cual debe seguir siendo lo que es, y no atraerla en cuanto presente , sino dejarla estar en cuanto posibilidad y ser de ese modo para con ella. En tal adelantarse hasta la posibilidad llego, como quien dice, a la cercanía más próxima a la propia posibilidad. Mas en ese acercarme, en ese intimar con ella, la posibilidad no se hace, digamos, mundo, sino que sigue siendo en todo momento más y más, y de modo más verdadero, sólo posibilidad. Esa posibilidad hasta la cual puedo adelantarme es en esencia y en un sentido extremo la mía. La posibilidad de irse de este mundo muriéndome, en cuanto estar-siendo-en-el-mundo, está caracterizada por el hecho de que en ella el mundo no está ahí más que en cuanto el en-qué (das Worin) que dejo. Al morir, el mundo no es sino lo que ya no tiene más que decir a mi ser propio, lo que el Dasein, en cuanto estar-siendo-en-el-mundo, precisamente deja atrás. En esa manera del estar-siendo-en-el-mundo que es el morir, el mundo es aquello de lo que el Dasein ya no depende; no es más que el puro en-qué del todavía-ser-por un momento.

Eso implica que la posibilidad extrema de la muerte es la manera de ser del Dasein como éste se ve pura y simplemente devuelto a sí mismo, y de modo tan absoluto que hasta el co-estar-siendo concreto deviene irrelevante. Por supuesto que al morir el Dasein sigue siendo en esencia estar-siendo-en-el-mundo y co-estar-siendo con los demás, pero el ser se traspone ahora directa y verdaderamente antes de nada en el «yo soy». En alguna manera sólo al morir puedo decir en términos absolutos «yo soy».

(397) La posibilidad extrema de la muerte en cuanto ser del Dasein en que es totalmente por sí mismo es algo que debe asumirse en el propio Dasein. Pero eso quiere decir que mientras el Dasein esté en la cotidianidad debe, saliendo de dicha cotidianidad, recogerse en la posibilidad más extrema del «yo soy». El adelantarse hasta la muerte en todo momento del Dasein significa salir del uno y recogerse el Dasein, en el sentido de optar por sí mismo. (p. 395-397)

The authentic possibility of the being of death is grasped only when the relationship to this possibility is such that it is thereby understood as a certainty of my being, specifically a certainty having the character of something indefinite and a certainty of being which is my certainty. The question therefore arises, whether there is a possibility of being in Dasein itself in which Dasein can now acquire a relationship of being toward death in the authentic sense.

I have already indicated that the relationship of being to a possibility must be such that it lets the possibility Stand as a possibility, and Not such that the possibility becomes reality, perhaps by causing my own death in suicide. By suicide I surrender the possibility precisely as possibility; it is radically reversed, for it becomes a reality. The possibility is however just what it is only when it is left standing, that is, when it is left standing before us as impending. A relationship of being to it must be such that I am precisely the possibility itself. This (318) [GA20:439-440] implies that in this being toward the possibility it cannot be a matter of wanting to possess the possibility in the way that worldly concern appresents and makes available what is of concern, but rather the reverse. The being must run forward toward the possibility, which has to remain what it is. It must not draw it near as a present but must let it stand as a possibility and be toward it in this way. In thus forerunning into the possibility, I come as it were into the nearest nearness to it. But as I approach it in this way, the possibility does not become a world, say, but becomes more and more a possibility and more authentically only a possibility. This possibility into which I can run is of its essence and in an extreme sense my possibility. The possibility of going out of the world by dying is, as being-in-the-world, defined by the world as still only being on Hand as the wherein which I am leaving. In dying, the world is only that which has nothing more to say for my own being, which Dasein gives up precisely as being-in-the-world. In dying, in this way of being-in-the-world, the world is that upon which Dasein is no longer dependent, the world remains only the pure wherein of still-being.

This implies that the utmost possibility of death is the way of being of Dasein in which it is purely and simply thrown back upon itself, so absolutely that even being-with in its concretion of “to be with others” becomes irrelevant. Of course, even in dying, Dasein is of its essence being-in-the-world and being-with with others, but the being is now transposed authentically directly to the ‘I am.’ Only in dying can I to some extent say absolutely, ‘I am.’

The utmost possibility of death as the being of Dasein, in which it is wholly by and of itself, has to be seized in Dasein itself. But insofar as Dasein is in everydayness, that means that it must be called back from this everydayness to the utmost possibility of the ‘I am.’ Dasein’s running forward toward death at every moment means Dasein’s drawing back from the Everyone by way of a self-choosing. Die eigentliche Seinsmöglichkeit Tod ist nur dann ergriffen, wenn das Seinsverhältnis zu dieser Möglichkeit so ist, daß sie dabei als eine Gewißheit meines Seins verstanden wird, und zwar eine Gewißheit vom Charakter des Unbestimmten und eine Gewißheit des Seins, die meine ist. Es entsteht so die Frage, ob es eine Seinsmöglichkeit im Dasein Selbst gibt, in der (439) nun das Dasein ein Seinsverhältnis zum Tode im eigentlichen Sinne bekommen kann.

Ich deutete schon an, das Seinsverhältnis zu einer Möglichkeit muß so Sein, daß es die Möglichkeit als Möglichkeit steben läßt, Nicht etwa so, daß die Möglichkeit zur Wirklichkeit wird, dadurch vielleicht, daß ich mich zum Sterben im Selbstmord bringe. Durch den Selbstmord z. B. gebe ich die Möglichkeit als Möglidikeit gerade auf, sie wird von Grund aus verkehrt, nämlich zu. einer Wirklichkeit. Die Möglichkeit ist jedoch gerade nur als das, Was sie ist, wenn sie bestehen bleibt, d. h. die Möglichkeit bevorstehend bleibt. Ein Seinsverhältnis zu ihr muß so sein, daß ich darin gerade die Möglichkeit selbst bin. Darin liegt, daß in diesem Sein zur Möglichkeit es sich nicht um ein Besitzenwollen der Möglichkeit in dem Sinne Handeln kann, Wie weltliches Besorgen das Besorgte appräsentiert und verfügbar Macht, sondern umgekehrt, das Sein muß zur Möglichkeit, die bleiben soll, was sie ist, Vorlaufen, nicht sie als Gegenwart heranziehen, sondern sie als Möglichkeit stehen lassen und so zu ihr sein. In solchem Vorlaufen in die Möglichkeit komme ich gleichsam in die nächste Nähe zu ihr selbst. Aber in diesem Näberkommen wird sie nicht etwa zur Welt, sondern immer mehr und mehr und eigentlicher nur Möglichkeit. Diese Möglichkeit, in die ich vorlaufen kann, ist wesensmäßig nnd in einem extremen Sinne die meine. Die Möglichkeit des sterbenden aus der Welt Gehens ist als In-der-Welt-sein dadurch bestimmt, daß dabei die Welt nur noch Vorhanden ist als das worin, das Ich verlasse. Im Sterben ist die Welt nur noch das, was für mein eigenes Sein Nichts mehr zu sagen hat, das, was das Dasein als In-der-Welt-sein gerade aufgibt. Die Welt ist im Sterben in dieser Weise des In-der-Welt-seins das, Worauf das Dasein nicht mehr angewiesen ist; Welt ist nur noch das pure Worin des Gerade-noch-seins.

Darin liegt: Die äußerste Möglidikeit des Todes ist die Seinsweise des Daseins, in der es schlechthin auf es selbst zurückgeworfen wird, so absolut, daß auch das Mitsein in seiner (440) Konkretion irrelevant wird. Zwar bleibt das Dasein auch im Sterben wesensmäßig In-der-Welt-sein und Mitsein mit Anderen, aber das Sein verlegt sich Jetzt gerade eigentlich erst in das »Ich bin«. Erst im Sterben kann ich gewissermaßen absolut sagen »ichbin«.

Die äußerste Möglichkeit des Todes als das Sein des Daseins, in der es ganz von ihm selbst her ist, soll im Dasein selbst ergriffen Werden. Das besagt aber, sofern das Dasein in der Alltäglichkeit ist, daß es sich aus dieser Alltäglichkeit in die äußerste Möglichkeit des »Ich bin« zurückholen muß. Das Vorlaufen zum Tode in jedem Augenblick des Daseins bedeutet das Sich-zurückholen des Daseins aus dem Man im Sinne des Sich-selbst-wahlens. (p. 439-440)
