El estar-siendo-en del Dasein nunca dejará de ser un enigma para todo intento de explicarlo en cuanto el ente que a priori no es. Toda explicación remite lo que hay que explicar a los nexos de ser. Y lo que ahí debe ser siempre determinante es la cuestión previa de si antes se ha experimentado auténticamente y se sabe de lo ente cuyo ser se quiere explicar y si está suficientemente caracterizado en su ser. El estar-siendo-en del Dasein no es algo, sin embargo, que se pueda explicar, sino algo que antes de nada sobre todo hay que verlo y aceptarlo en cuanto modo de ser propio, esto es, hay que descifrarlo ontológicamente. ¡Nada de violencia, sino todo lo contrario! Sin duda, es más fácil exigirlo que realizarlo, y más realizarlo en un análisis que resulte efectivamente revelador.

Antes de pasar a dicho análisis, aclaremos el fenómeno con una analogía que no se halla demasiado distante del asunto mismo, puesto que se (209) trata de algo ente a lo que (en términos formales) hemos de atribuir el mismo modo de ser del Dasein —la «vida».

Comparemos el sujeto y su esfera interior con un caracol metido en su concha. Advierto explícitamente que no compartimos las teorías que hablan de la inmanencia de la conciencia y del sujeto, que conciben la conciencia como si fuera la concha de un caracol, pero como se deja indeterminado el sentido de ese interior y de la inmanencia, como nunca se llega a saber qué sentido tiene el «in» ni qué relación de ser tiene ese «in-» del sujeto para con el mundo, resulta —en sentido negativo— equivalente a nuestra analogía.

Alguien podría decir: el caracol se arrastra a veces, sacando el cuerpo de su concha y manteniéndolo así, se estira para alcanzar algo, comida, ciertas cosas que encuentra en el suelo. ¿Sólo de esa manera entra el caracol en relación de ser con el mundo? ¡Para nada! El salir y arrastrarse no es más que una modificación local de su estar-ya-en-el-mundo. Incluso cuando está metido en su concha, su ser, bien entendido, es un estar fuera. No está en su concha como el agua en el vaso, sino que tiene por mundo el interior de su concha, con lo que se topa y que palpa, donde se calienta, etc. Todo lo que no vale de la relación de ser del agua en el vaso, o, en caso de que fuera cierto, también del agua, nos llevaría por eso mismo a decir que el agua tiene el modo de ser del Dasein, que el agua tiene un mundo. Ahora bien, el caracol no es que esté en principio, digamos, únicamente en su concha y todavía no en el mundo, ese mundo del cual se dice que se halla frente a él, y sólo gracias a salir y arrastrarse consiguiera llegar a él. Sale y se arrastra sólo porque según su ser ya está en un mundo. No es que se provea de mundo sólo cuando palpa, sino que palpa, porque su ser no quiere decir más que estar en un mundo.

Lo mismo ocurre con un sujeto al que se le supone capacidad de conocer. Si se parte de que es un ente que ha de tener dicha posibilidad de ser, se entiende entonces que es un ente cuyo modo de ser es estar ya siendo en un mundo; sólo que ese suponerse se lleva a cabo ciegamente, sin entender realmente qué es lo que en el fondo se está diciendo con conocer.

The in-being of Dasein remains a puzzle for every attempt to explain it as an entity which it a priori is Not. For every explanation conducts what is to be explained back to its contextures of being. This must always be guided by the prior question of whether the entity to be explained is experienced beforehand in its being and whether it is adequately specified in its being. The in-being of Dasein is not to be explained but before all else has to be seen as an inherent kind of being and accepted as such; in short, it has to be deciphered ontologically. Hardly an arbitrary act, but just the opposite! Of course, this is easier said than done, especially in a truly expository analysis.

Before proceeding to this analysis, the phenomenon may be clarified by an analogy which itself is not too far removed from the matter at issue, inasmuch as this analogy is concerned with an entity to which we must likewise attribute, in a formal way, the kind of being which belongs to Dasein—‘life.’

We may compare the subject and its inner sphere to a snail in its shell. Let it be expressly noted that we do not presume that the theories which speak of the immanence of consciousness and of the subject conceive of consciousness precisely in this sense of a snail-shell. But as long as the sense of the ‘within’ and immanence is left undefined, so that we never learn what sense this ‘in’ has and what relation of being this ‘in’ of the subject has to the world, it is at any rate in a negative way equivalent to our analogy.

We can say that the snail at times crawls out of its shell and at the same time keeps it on Hand; it stretches itself out to something, to food, to some things which it finds on the ground. Does the snail thereby first enter into a relationship of being with the world? Not at all! Its act of crawling out is but a local modification of its already-being-in-the-world. Even when it is in its shell, its being is a being-outside, rightly understood. It is not in its shell like water in the glass, for it has the inside of its shell as a world which it pushes against and touches, in which it warms itself, and the like. None of this applies to the relationship of being of the water in the glass or, if it did, we would have to say even of water that it has the mode of being of Dasein, it is such that it has a world. The snail is not at the outset only in its shell and not yet in the world, a world described as standing over against it, an opposition which it broaches by first crawling out. It crawls out only insofar as its being is already to be in a world. It does not first add a world to itself by touching. Rather, it touches because its being means nothing other than to be in a world.

This applies similarly to a subject to which knowing is ascribed. If it is posited as an entity which is supposed to have this possibility of being, it is thereby understood as an entity which is in the mode of being in a world. But this positing is performed blindly, without an understanding of what in principle is already implied in knowing. (p. 165-166)

Das In-Sein des Daseins bleibt ein Rätsel für jeden Versuch, es als Seiendes zu erklären, das es a priori Nicht ist. Jede Erklärung führt das zu Erklärende in Seinszusammenhänge zurück. Immer muß dabei die Vorfrage leitend Sein, ob das zu erklärende Seiende in seinem Sein zuvor erfahren und ob es hinreichend in seinem Sein bestimmt ist. Das In-Sein des Daseins ist aber nicht zu erklären, sondern vor Allem erst als eigene Seinsart zu sehen und als solche hinzunehmen, d. h. es ist ontologisch aufzuschlüsseln. Kein Gewaltstreich, gerade das Gegenteil! Allerdings ist das leichter gefordert als vollzogen, und gar vollzogen in wirklich aufdeckender Analyse.

Bevor Wir zu dieser Analyse übergehen, sei das Phänomen in einer Analogie geklärt, die Selbst nicht allzuweit von der Sache selbst abliegt, sofern es sich dabei um ein Seiendes handelt, dem wir (formal gesprochen) gleichfalls die Seinsart von Dasein zusprechen müssen – »Leben«.

Wir vergleichen das Subjekt und seine Innensphäre mit der Schnecke in ihrem Haus. Ich bemerke ausdrücklich, daß wir den Theorien, die von der Immanenz des Bewußtseins und des Subjekts Sprechen, nicht zumuten, daß sie in diesem Sinne eines Schneckengehäuses das Bewußtsein fassen, aber sofern das innen und die Immanenz ihrem Sinne nach unbestimmt bleiben, sofern Man nie erfährt, welchen Sinn dieses »in« hat, und (224) welche Seinsbeziehung dieses »in« des Subjekts zur Welt hat, kommt unsere Analogie im Negativen ihr jedenfalls gleich.

Man könnte sagen: Die Schnecke kriecht zuweilen aus ihrem Gehäuse und behält es dabei zugleich, sie streckt sich nach irgendetwas aus, nach Nahrung, nach Gewissen Dingen, die sie am Boden findet. Kommt die Schnecke dadurch erst in ein Seinsverhältnis zur Welt? Nein! Das Herauskriechen ist nur eine örtliche Modifikation Ihres Schon-seins-in-der-Welt. Auch wenn sie im Gehäuse ist, ist ihr Sein rechtverstandenes Draußensein. Sie ist in ihrem Haus nicht Wie das Wasser im Glas, sondern sie hat das Innen ihres Hauses als Welt, daran sie sich stößt, das sie betastet, darin sie sich wärmt und dergleichen. Alles Was vom Seinsverhältnis des Wassers im Glas, nicht gilt, oder, wenn es zuträfe, auch vom Wasser, nötigte uns aufgrund dessen zu sagen: Wasser hat die Seinsart des Daseins, es ist so, daß es eine Welt hat. Die Schnecke aber ist nicht etwa Zunächst nur im Haus und noch nicht in der Welt, einer sogenannten gegenüberstehenden Welt, um in ein solches Gegenübersein erst durch das Herauskriechen zu kommen. Sie kriecht nur heraus, sofern sie schon ihrem Sein nach in einer Welt ist. Sie legt sich durch Tasten nicht erst eine Welt zu, sondern sie tastet, weil ihr Sein Nichts anderes besagt als in einer Welt sein.

So ist es auch bezüglich eines Subjekts, dem man Erkennen zumutet. Setzt man es als ein Seiendes, das diese Seinsmöglichkeit Haben soll, dann wird es damit als Seiendes verstanden, das in der Weise des Seins in einer Welt ist, nur daß man diese Setzung blind vollzieht, ohne Verständnis dessen, was grundsätzlich. mit Erkennen schon gesagt ist.
