¿Qué es eso de ser-percibido? ¿Es que hay algo así, se puede decir algo acerca del ser-percibido de la silla? De lo que se trata es de que, independientemente de cualesquiera teorías, veamos esa estructura como algo diferente de las estructuras que convienen a la cosa y a lo ente en cuanto ente. Con esta caracterización, aunque sea provisional, distinguiéndolo respecto de la cosicidad, hemos obtenido una primera indicación acerca de hacia dónde hay que dirigir la mirada. Ciertamente, no hacia la silla misma, como es en el caso de la percepción, sino hacia la silla en el cómo de su ser-intendida. ¿Qué es lo que aquí se muestra? Lo percibido en cuanto tal tiene el carácter de corporalidad, es decir, lo ente que se presenta en cuanto percibido, tiene el carácter de lo corporalmente-aquí . No sólo se da (lo ente) en cuanto ello mismo, sino ello mismo en su corporalidad. Hay que hacer una distinción en los modos de estar-dado entre el darse corporalmente y el darse ello mismo. Aclarémonos la diferencia por contraste con el cómo se presenta lo meramente representado. Se entiende aquí por representar el simple imaginarse  algo.

Puedo imaginarme ahora el puente de Weidenhauser: me planto delante del puente. En este figurarme el puente se me da él mismo, es decir, el propio puente y no una imagen de él ni fantasía alguna, sino él mismo, y, sin embargo, no se me da corporalmente. Se me daría corporalmente si saliera y me pusiera delante del propio puente. En definitiva: lo que se da ello mismo no tiene por qué estar dado corporalmente; mas sí al revés: todo lo que se da corporalmente se da ello mismo. La corporalidad es un modo eminente del darse ello mismo de lo ente. Este darse ello mismo se verá aún más claramente si se contrasta con otro de los modos posibles del representar, lo que en la fenomenología se denomina mentar vacío .

El mentar vacío es el representar algo en el modo del pensar en algo, del recordar que puede surgir en una conversación acerca del puente. Miento el puente mismo, pero sin verlo siquiera en su aspecto: lo miento, me refiero a él en el sentido de un mentar vacío. Una gran parte de nuestro habla corriente (63)  se mueve en este tipo de discurso. Mentamos las cosas mismas, no imágenes ni representaciones, y, sin embargo, no damos una idea clara de ellas, no las hacemos intuitivas . También en ese mentar vacío se mienta lo mentado de modo simple, sólo que vacío, es decir, sin ningún tipo de compleción  intuitiva. La compleción intuitiva se encuentra, por su parte, en el simple imaginarse algo, el cual da ciertamente lo ente mismo, sólo que no lo da corporalmente.

Esa diferencia entre el mentar vacío y el representar intuitivo no sólo vale para la percepción sensorial, sino también para las modificaciones de todos los actos. Tomemos la proposición: 1 + 2 es igual a 2 + 1. Es algo que se puede repetir sin pensar, y, aun así, entender y saber que no se dice con ello ningún disparate. También se puede, sin embargo, hacerlo pensando cada paso de manera que se vaya inteligiendo , viendo lo que se está pensando. En un caso es algo que se dice en cierta manera a ciegas; en el otro, habiéndolo visto. En este último caso, cuando se imagina lo mentado, se trata de un figurarse  más originario, en el que 2 + 1..., es decir, todas las determinaciones se me hacen presentes en su significado originario. Sólo en raras ocasiones nos movemos dentro de este pensar intuitivo, en el que se van demostrando las determinaciones de las cosas; generalmente más bien nos conformamos con un pensar disminuido y ciego.

Otro tipo más del representar en sentido amplio es la percepción de una imagen. Si analizamos la percepción de una imagen, vemos claramente cómo lo percibido de una imagen en la conciencia tiene una estructura totalmente distinta que lo percibido en la percepción directa o que lo representado en el simple imaginarse algo. Miro, por ejemplo, una tarjeta postal del puente de Weidenhauser. Tenemos ahí un nuevo tipo de representación. Lo que corporalmente se da es la tarjeta postal. Esta tarjeta postal es ella misma una cosa, un objeto, de la misma manera que el puente, un árbol o cualquier otra cosa. Pero esta cosa no es una cosa simple como el propio puente, sino que es, diríamos, una cosa-imagen. Percibiéndola, a través de ella, veo lo reproducido en ella, es decir, el puente. En la percepción de una imagen lo que aprehendo expresamente no es la cosa-imagen, sino que (64) cuando miro una tarjeta postal lo que veo —en la actitud natural— es lo reproducido en ella, el puente, que es lo reproducido en la tarjeta postal. En este caso no se trata ni de un mentar vacío ni de un mero figurarse ni de una percepción originaria, sino de un captar algo en esa peculiar plataforma que es la reproducción de la imagen de algo. El propio puente es ahora lo representado, en el sentido de que está representado por medio de una reproducción hecha con algo. Este aprehender una imagen, este aprehender algo en cuanto reproducido por medio de una cosa-imagen tiene una estructura totalmente distinta que la percepción directa. Conviene tener esto perfectamente claro, porque se suele pretender, antes y también ahora de nuevo, que la aprehensión de una imagen es el modo de aprehender con cuya ayuda se cree poder dilucidar definitivamente lo que sea la percepción de objetos. En la conciencia de una imagen está la cosa-imagen y lo reproducido. La cosa-imagen puede ser una cosa concreta —la pizarra que hay sobre la pared—, pero no es precisamente una mera cosa en cuanto cosa de la naturaleza o, si no, una cosa del mundo-en-torno, sino una cosa que muestra algo, lo reproducido mismo. En la percepción directa, por el contrario, en el aprehender directo de un objeto, no se encuentra para nada la conciencia de ninguna imagen. Contradice lo que se descubre en la aprehensión simple de un objeto el interpretarlo en el sentido de que cuando, pongamos, veo esa casa de ahí enfrente lo que hago es percibir una imagen en la conciencia, como si se me diera una cosa-imagen y esa cosa-imagen la tomara yo por reproducción de la casa que está ahí fuera. Es decir, como si hubiera en mi interior una imagen subjetiva y ahí fuera estuviera, transcendente, lo reproducido. En la percepción simple y directa no se encuentra nada de eso, sino que lo que veo es la propia casa. Dejando de lado el hecho de que esa transposición de la conciencia de una imagen, constituida de modo totalmente distinto, a la simple captación de un objeto no logra aclarar nada y da lugar a teorías insostenibles, hay que tener presente el verdadero motivo por el cual la rechazamos: no corresponde al simple hallazgo  fenomenológico. Hay también otra dificultad, en la cual, sin embargo, no podemos adentrarnos, y que es la siguiente: si el conocimiento como tal consiste en la aprehensión de la imagen de un objeto en cuanto imagen inmanente de una cosa transcendente que se halla fuera, ¿cómo se puede aprehender, entonces, el propio objeto transcendente? Si toda aprehensión de un objeto es conciencia de una imagen, entonces para aprehender la imagen inmanente necesito a su vez una cosa-imagen que me reproduzca (65) dicha imagen inmanente, etc., etc. Éste sería un segundo factor que habla en contra de tal teoría. La cuestión principal, no obstante, es que si ya en el curso de la aprehensión directa no hay nada de imágenes ni de reproducción, tanto menos se halla en el acto mismo de aprehender un objeto nada que se parezca a la conciencia de una imagen. Y no se rechaza esta subestructura (Substruktion) de la conciencia de una imagen en la aprehensión de un objeto porque dé lugar a un regreso infinito y con ello no se aclare nada, ni porque con dicha subestructura no se llegue a teoría sostenible alguna, sino porque contradice ya de entrada todos los hallazgos fenomenológicos. Por ser teoría sin fenomenología, por eso debe considerarse la percepción como algo totalmente distinto de la conciencia de una imagen. En cualquier caso, la conciencia de una imagen es posible en absoluto sólo en cuanto percepción, sólo en el caso de que se esté aprehendiendo una cosa-imagen y en ella en primer lugar lo reproducido.

What is perceivedness? Is there really anything like this? Can anything be said about the perceivedness of the chair? Independent of any theories, we must regard these structures in their distinction from the structures that pertain to the thing and to the entity as an entity. This provisional specification and differentiation from thingness already give us an initial indication as to where we should look: manifestly Not at the chair itself as it is intended in perceiving, but rather at it in the how of its being-intended. What shows itself there? The perceived as such has the feature of bodily presence (Leibhaftigkeit). In other words, the entity which presents itself as perceived has the feature of being bodily-there. Not only is it given as itself, but as itself in its bodily presence. There is a distinction in mode of givenness to be made between the bodily-given and the self-given. Let us clarify this distinction for ourselves by setting it off from the way in which something merely represented is there. Representing is here understood in the sense of simple envisaging, simply bringing something to mind.

I can now envisage the Weidenhauser bridge; I place myself before it, as it were. Thus the bridge is itself given. I intend the bridge itself and not an image of it, no fantasy, but it itself. And yet it is not bodily given to me. It would be bodily given if I go down the hill and place myself before the bridge itself. This means that what is itself given need not be bodily given, while conversely anything which is bodily given is itself given. Bodily presence is a superlative mode of the self-givenness of an entity. This self-givenness becomes clearer still by setting it off from another possible mode of representing, which in phenomenology is understood as empty intending.

Empty intending is the mode of representing something in the manner of thinking of something, of recalling it, which for example can take place in a conversation about the bridge. I intend the bridge itself without thereby seeing it simply in its outward appearance, but I intend it in an empty intending (which in this conversation is left intuitively unfulfilled). A large part of our ordinary talk goes on in this way. We mean the matters themselves and not images or representations of them, yet we do not have them intuitively given. In empty intending as well, the intended is itself directly and simply intended, but merely emptily, which means without any intuitive fulfillment. Intuitive fulfillment is found once again in simple envisaging; this indeed gives the entity itself but does not give it bodily.

This distinction between empty intending and intuitive representing applies not only to sense perception but to the modifications of all acts. Take the sentence: 1 + 2 is 2 + 1. One can repeat it thoughtlessly but still understand it and know that one is not talking nonsense. But it can also be carried out with insight, so that every step is performed by envisaging what is intended. In the first instance it is uttered to some extent blindly, but in the second it is seen. In the latter case, the intended is envisaged in an originary envisaging, in that I make present to myself 2 + 1 . . . , i.e., all determinations in their original meanings. This mode of intuitive thinking demonstrates the determinations in the matters themselves. But it is only on rare occasions that we operate in this mode of intuitive thinking. For the most part we operate in foreshortened and blind thinking.

Another type of representing in the broadest sense is the perception of a picture. If we analyze a perception of a picture, we see clearly how what is perceived in the consciousness of a picture has a totally different structure from what is perceived in simple perception or what is represented in simple envisaging. I can look at a picture postcard of the Weidenhauser bridge. Here we have a new type of representing. What is now bodily given is the postcard itself. This card itself is a thing, an object, just as much as the bridge or a tree or the like. But it is not a simple thing like the bridge. As we have said, it is a picture-thing. In perceiving it, I see through it what is pictured, the bridge. In perceiving a picture, I do not thematically apprehend the picture-thing. Rather, when I see a picture postcard, I see—in the natural attitude—what is pictured on it, the bridge, (which is now seen as) what is pictured on the card. In this case, the bridge is not emptily presumed or merely envisaged or originarily perceived, but apprehended in this characteristic layered structure of the portrayal of something. The bridge itself is now the represented in the sense of being represented by way of being depicted through something. This apprehension of a picture, the apprehension of something as something pictured through a picture-thing, has a structure totally different from that of a direct perception. This must be brought home quite forcefully because of the efforts once made, and once again being made today, to take the apprehension of a picture as the paradigm by means of which, it is believed, any perception of any object can be illuminated. In the consciousness of a picture, there is the picture-thing and the pictured. The picture-thing can be a concrete thing—the blackboard on the wall—but the picture-thing is not merely a thing like a natural thing or another environmental thing. For it shows something, what is pictured itself. In simple perception, by contrast, in the simple apprehension of an object, nothing like a consciousness of a picture can be found. It goes against all the plain and simple findings about the simple apprehension of an object to interpret them as if I first perceive a picture in my consciousness when I see that house there, as if a picture-thing were first given and thereupon apprehended as picturing that house out there. There would thus be a subjective picture within and that which is pictured outside, transcendent. Nothing of the sort is to be found. Rather, in the simple sense of perception I see the house itself. Even aside from the fact that this transposition of the consciousness of a picture, which is constituted in a totally different way, onto the simple apprehension of an object explains nothing and leads to untenable theories, we must keep in mind the real reason for rejecting this transposition: it does not correspond to the simple phenomenological findings. There is also the following difficulty, which we shall only mention without exploring. If knowledge in general is an apprehension of an object-picture as an immanent picture of a transcendent thing outside, how then is the transcendent object itself to be apprehended? If every apprehension of an object is a consciousness of a picture, then for the immanent picture I once again need a picture-thing which depicts the immanent picture for me etc. etc. This is a secondary factor which argues against this theory. But the main thing is this: not only is there nothing of the pictorial and picturing in the course of simple apprehension; there is in particular nothing like a consciousness of a picture in the very act of apprehending an object. It is not because we fall into an infinite regress, and so explain nothing, that the infrastructure of the consciousness of a picture for the apprehension of an object is to be rejected. It is not because we arrive at no genuine and tenable theory with this infrastructure. It is rather because this is already contrary to every phenomenological finding. It is a theory without phenomenology. Hence perceiving must be considered totally distinct from the consciousness of a picture. Consciousness of a picture is possible at all first only as perceiving, but only in such a way that the picture-thing is actually apprehended beginning with what is pictured on it.

Es kommt darauf an, daß Wir diese Strukturen unabhängig von irgendwelchen Theorien im Unterschied zu den Strukturen sehen, die dem Ding und dem Seienden als Seiendem zukommen. Aus dieser vorläufigen Bestimmung und Abgrenzung gegen die Dinglichkeit Haben wir schon eine erste Anweisung, in welcher Richtung der Blick zu nehmen ist. Offenbar geht er Nicht auf den Stuhl Selbst, so Wie er im Wahrnehmen vermeint ist, sondern auf ihn im Wie seines Intendiertseins. Was zeigt sich da? Das Wahrgenommene als solches hat den Charakter der Leibhaftigkeit, d. h. das Seiende, das sich als Wahrgenommenes präsentiert, hat den Charakter des Leibhaft-da. Nicht nur ist es als es selbst gegeben, sondern es (54) selbst in seiner Leibhaftigkeit, Es ist ein Unterschied in der Gegebenheitsart zu machen zwischen dem Leibhaft-gegeben und dem Selbst-gegeben. Wir machen uns diesen Unterschied klar in Abhebung gegenüber dem Wie, in dem das bloß Vorgestellte da ist. vorstellen ist Hier gefaßt im Sinne schlichter Vergegenwärtigung.

Ich kann mir Jetzt die Weidenhauser Brücke vergegenwärtigen; ich versetze mich vor die Brücke. In dieser Vergegenwärtigung der Brücke ist sie selbst gegeben, ich meine die Brücke selbst und kein Bild von ihr, keine Phantasie, sondern sie selbst, und doch ist sie mir nicht leibhaftig gegeben. Leibhaftig gegeben wäre sie, wenn ich hinuntergehe und mich vor die Brücke selbst Stelle. Das heißt aber: Was selbst gegeben ist, braucht nicht leibhaftig gegeben zu Sein, wohl aber umgekehrt ist jedes leibhaftig Gegebensein selbst gegeben. Leibhaftigkeit ist ein ausgezeichneter Modus der Selbstgegebenheit eines Seienden. Diese Selbstgegebenheit wird noch deutlicher in der Abgrenzung gegen eine Andere Mögliche Art des Vorstellens, die man in der Phänomenologie als Leermeinen faßt.

Leermeinen ist die Art des Vorstellens von etwas in der Weise des Denkens an etwas, des Erinnerns, welches in einem Gespräch über die Brücke auftreten kann. Ich meine die Brücke selbst, ohne daß ich sie dabei in ihrem Aussehen schlicht sehe, aber ich meine sie im Sinne des Leermeinens. In dieser Art und Rede bewegt sich ein großer Teil unserer natürlichen Rede. Wir meinen die Sachen selbst, nicht Bilder oder Vorstellungen von ihnen, dennoch haben wir sie nicht anschaulich gegeben. Auch im Leermeinen ist das Gemeine direkt, schlicht selbst gemeint, aber nur leer, das besagt eben, ohne jede anschauliche Erfüllung. Anschauliche Erfüllung wird wiederum in der schlichten Vergegenwärtigung vorgefunden. Leermeinen dagegen gibt zwar das Seiende selbst, aber sie gibt es nicht leibhaftig.

Dieser Unterschied des Leermeinens und des anschaulich Vorstellens gilt nicht nur von sinnlicher Wahrnehmung, sondem (55) von den Modifikationen aller Akte. Nehmen wir den Satz: 1 + 2 ist 2 + 1. Man kann ihn gedankenlos hersagen, aber doch Verstehen und Wissen, daß man keinen Unsinn sagt. Man kann ihn aber auch einsichtig vollziehen, so daß jeder Schritt unter Vergegenwärtigung des Gemeinten vollzogen wird. Einmal wird er gewissermaßen blind ausgesprochen, das andere Mal gesehen. Wenn das letztere der Fall ist, das Gemeinte vergegenwärtigt ist, dann ist es in originärer Vergegenwärtigung, indem ich 2+1. .alle Bestimmungen in ihren ursprünglichen Bedeutungen mir präsent mache. In dieser Weise des anschaulichen Denkens, d. h. des an den Sachen ausweisenden, bewegen wir uns nur selten, meist dagegen in verkürztem und blinden denken.

Eine weitere Art des Vorstellens im weitesten Sinne ist die Bildwahrnehmung. Wenn wir eine Bildwahrnehmung analysieren, sehen wir deutlich, wie das Wahrgenommene eines Bildbewußtseins eine ganz andere Struktur hat als das Wahrgenommene schlichter Wahrnehmung oder das Vorgestellte schlichter Vergegenwärtigung. Ich kann mir eine Ansichtskarte von der Weidenhauser Brücke Ansehen. Dabei liegt eine Neue Art des Vorstellens vor. Leibhaft gegeben ist jetzt die Ansichtskarte selbst. Diese Ansichtskarte selbst ist Ding, Objekt, genauso wie die Brücke oder ein Baum oder dergleichen. Aber dieses Ding ist kein einfaches Ding wie die Brücke selbst, sondern ist, wie gesagt, ein Bildding. Es wahrnehmend, sehe ich durch es hindurch das Abgebildete, nämlich die Brücke. In der Bildwahrnehmung erfasse ich nicht thematisch das Bildding, sondern wenn ich eine Ansichtskarte sehe, sehe ich – natürlich eingestellt – das darin Abgebildete, die Brücke, das Abgebildete der Ansichtskarte. In diesem Fall ist sie weder leer vermeint, noch bloß vergegenwärtigt, noch originär wahrgenommen, sondern in diesem eigentümlichen Stufenbau der Verbildlichung von etwas aufgefaßt. Die Brücke selbst ist jetzt das Vorgestellte im Sinne des Vorgestelltseins auf dem Wege einer Darstellung durch etwas. Diese Bilderfassung5 die Erfassung (56) von etwas als einem Abgebildeten durch ein Bildding hindurch, hat eine ganz andere Struktur als eine schlichte Wahrnehmung. Man muß sich das ganz klar vergegenwärtigen, weil versucht wird, früher und auch heute wieder, Bilderfassung als diejenige Erfassungsart zu nehmen, mit deren Hilfe man glaubt, überhaupt eine Objektwahrnehmung aufklären zu können. Im Bildbewußtsein ist das Bildding und das Abgebildete. Das Bildding kann ein konkretes Ding sein – die Tafel an der Wand – , aber das Bildding ist eben nicht bloß Ding als Naturding oder sonstiges Umweltding, sondern es zeigt etwas, das Abgebildete selbst; in der schlichten Wahrnehmung dagegen, im schlichten erfassen eines Objektes, läßt sich Nichts von irgendeinem Bildbewußtsein vorfinden. Es läuft jedem schlichten Befund des einfachen Objekterfassens zuwider, wenn man diesen Befund so interpretiert, als würde ich Zunächst, wenn ich dieses Haus da sehe, ein Bild in meinem Bewußtsein wahrnehmen, so daß ein Bildding gegeben und dieses Bildding hernach als abbildendes aufgefaßt würde, nämlich als Abbild des Hauses da draußen, d. h. innen ein subjektives Bild und draußen, transzendent, das Abgebildete. Davon ist nichts vorfindlich, sondern im schlichten Sinn der Wahrnehmung sehe ich das Haus selbst. Ganz abgesehen davon, daß diese Übertragung des ganz anders konstituierten Bildbewußtseins auf schlichtes Objekterfassen nichts erklärt und zu unhaltbaren Theorien führt, muß man sich das eigentliche Motiv gegenwärtig halten, aus dem heraus sie abgelehnt Werden muß: sie entspricht nicht dem schlichten phänomenologischen Befund. Es besteht auch folgende Schwierigkeit, auf die aber weiter nicht einzugehen ist: Wenn Erkenntnis überhaupt Erfassen eines Objektbüdes als immanentes Bild von einem transzendenten Ding draußen ist, wie soll dann das transzendente Objekt selbst erfaßt werden? Wenn jedes Objekterfassen Bildbewußtsein ist, dann brauche ich für das immanente Bild wieder ein Bildding, das mir das immanente darstellt usw. Dies ist ein sekundäres Moment, das gegen (57) diese Theorie spricht. Die Hauptsache ist aber: Es Hegt sowohl in der Richtung des schlichten Erfassens nichts von Bildlichkeit und Verbildlichung, erst recht liegt nicht im Akte des Objekterfassens selbst so etwas wie ein Bildbewußtsein. Nicht deshalb, weil man in einen unendlichen Regreß kommt, d. h. nichts erklärt, ist die Substruktion eines Bildbewußtseins für das Objekterfassen zurückzuweisen, nicht weil man mit dieser Substruktion zu keiner echten haltbaren Theorie kommt, sondern weil sie selbst schon jedem phänomenologischen Befund zuwiderläuft, Theorie ohne Phänomenologie ist, deswegen muß Wahrnehmen total vom Bildbewußtsein verschieden gedacht werden. Bildbewußtsein ist überhaupt nur allererst als Wahrnehmen möglich, doch nur so, daß überhaupt das Bildding erfaßt ist und erst an ihm das Abgebildete.
